A swift water rescue crew evacuated several staff and students from Pomona State School when rapidly rising floodwaters isolated the campus on Friday, May 13. Picture: J Suares.

Downpour prompts swift rescue BY ALEX PURCELL STUDENTS and staff at Pomona State School had to be evacuated by a swift water rescue team when rapidly rising floodwaters isolated the campus. Station Street was cut off by floodwaters at Subway Avenue on Friday, May 13, after a heavy downpour delivered more rain on top of 100mm that had fallen in the days prior.

A Department of Education spokesperson said six students and seven school staff members were transported across the flooded causeway to Pomona Memorial Hall. “The remaining students and staff were safely evacuated to Pomona Memorial Hall, as per the school’s Emergency Response Plan. “Parents were informed and collected their children.

"No students or staff were harmed during the severe weather event.” “The school building and facilities did not sustain any water damage.” QFES Area Commander for Gympie and Noosa and Pomona resident, Inspector Kent Mayne, said the floodwaters came up so fast it was a matter of safety. “We don’t want anyone to go near floodwaters or fastmoving water,” he said.

“The first crew to arrive responding to the call stated that the water came up very quickly and was moving very fast.” “We had one swift water crew and one motorised craft crew attend and assist with the evacuation.” Pomona State School Principal Alyson Covey said they were thankful for QFES’s quick response. “I would like to sincerely thank our parent community

who responded so quickly and collected their children from school. Pomona SS staff and leadership team are also very thankful for the support and quick response received from the Pomona Police and QFES,” she said. Inspector Mayne is reminding locals to be careful. “We’ve had a really long wet period, the ground is saturated and more rain is forecast. We

encourage everyone to take precautions and listen to the latest information and warnings from the Bureau of Meteorology.” “QFES and SES are always ready to assist but need everyone to take precautions to stay safe. “Do not go near floodwaters, you are at risk if you do. If you need SES call 132500 and if it is a life-threatening emergency call 000.”

Eco-friendly villages of tiny homes may be one solution to the housing crisis.

WHAT are the answers to Noosa's ever-present housing crisis? What can be done about the rising and rising cost of food? What is possible in the face of relentless climate events on every horizon? Permaculture Noosa vice president Sandra Guy said the speakers at their monthly meeting at the Cooroy Memorial Hall on 7 June will have the answers, inspiration and optimism. “The key is not all about compost, but extends to dignified living, the availability of tiny homes ideally situated and integrated into ecovillages, just part of the work that our two speakers will describe. “The principles of Permaculture are demonstrated in growing food sustainably and building shelters that are harmonious with nature, but you will find a great deal more than this to hear Ahtee Chia and JimmyZ Hirst.” Ahtee Chia is an ecowarrior and architect, a teacher of advanced Tai

Sandra said as a Daoist and Buddhist, Chia is a minimalist and has planted his own food forest while ever maintaining his core, Tai Chi. “Over the past 45 years, he has designed climateresponsive and energyefficient buildings from houses, schools, factories, housing estates, multistorey buildings, resorts and more. “Chia’s association with Permaculture has extended his interest in sustainable social and ecological aspects of human settlements globally.” JimmyZ Hirst is the director of Polkadot.org. au, an innovator from a different direction who has reached the same position as his colleague that of advocacy for land, housing sustainability and affordability.

Hirst can refer to examples around the world from the famous Findhorn in Scotland to the much closer Eco Village in Currumbin, Gold Coast. “In putting these practices together we may find there are in fact fixes to the housing debacle and skyrocketing food prices. Community digs deep for Blake BY ALEX PURCELL THE Cooroy Community is digging deep for one of its own. Cooroy boy Blake Gamble suffered burns to 19 percent of his body in a horrific accident at his Black Mountain home on Monday, May 2. Family friend, Renee Cervenak, said that the sixyear-old accidentally pulled a cupboard holding a kettle full of boiling hot water, down on top of himself. He sustained serious burns to his face and body. “His mum, Tabatha, was quick to put him into a cool shower and phone emergency services,” Renee said. But due to the flooding in February and subsequent landslides in Black Mountain, emergency services were unable to reach them. “Tabatha was forced to carry Blake across rubble and mud to reach the ambulance on the other side,” Renee said. Blake was rushed to Royal Children's Hospital in

Brisbane for treatment and has since been released. However, Renee said he has to return to the Brisbane-based burns unit twice weekly for essential treatment. “Tabatha has had to put everything on hold to be there for her son," she said. "The cost of travel, accommodation and other bills are quickly piling up. “To make matters worse, since the incident, the weather has caused additional troubles with flooding to the area and Tabatha is now unable to bring Blake home, adding to the costs associated with Blake’s recovery.” To try and help, Renee has started GoFundMe to assist Tabatha and Blake while he heals. “Blake is a little boy full of life, energy and a smile that could light up the world," Renee said. "Blake has grown up in Cooroy and his mum is a huge support to the school and Cooroy community. “Tabatha has put all she has towards helping little Blake to get the help he

Last chance for free pet registration LESS than one week remains to register your dog for free with Noosa Council. May is “Dog Amnesty Month” and until the end of the month, dog registration is free. Noosa Shire dog owners can register their pets for free online at noosa.qld. gov.au or at the Council’s Customer Service Centre in Tewantin. The registration is renewed annually. It is a State Government requirement that all dogs

over the age of three months must be registered with their local council. There are 10,522 dogs registered in Noosa. Council said that registering pets helped them to identify lost dogs

and reunite them quickly with their owners. It also gives Council important information to ensure services such as waste bags, litter bins and off-leash areas are provided where needed.

Council assesses heritage significance of old well EVER since the Cooroy Rag, with the help of three local stalwarts, uncovered the old Cooroy Butter Factory's well in the heart of Cooroy, Noosa Council has been assessing its heritage significance. Council Communications Manager Ken Furdek said that the work by the Heritage Unit to assess a site could be timeconsuming. “Assessing the heritage significance of sites that are nominated by the community as being of potential interest, is a core element of work by Council's Heritage Unit. “It can be time-consuming to undertake the required research and assessment, as it often involves gaining input or advice from expert external consultants as well as research at other sites such as State Archives or the Lands Department.” Since lifting the lid on the tank in Apex Park to confirm that it contains not waste, but clean water that once supplied the old Butter Factory, the well has

been the talk of the town, with many discussions about what should be done with it. Many would like to see the well water put to good

use, such as creating a tourist attraction or establishing a water station where people can fill their water bottles with the “liquid gold”.

STEP INTO AUTUMN Dr David Kirkman and his wife Jan, with staff from Eden Private Hospital at the surprise unveiling of the Kirkman Wing.

New wing honours decades of service BY ALEX PURCELL COOROY’S longest-serving doctor has been surprised by having a hospital wing named after him. Dr David Kirkman retired earlier this year after serving the Cooroy community for 43 years. Dr Kirkman said he was invited to Eden Private Hospital for morning tea, only to discover a wing has been named in his honour. “It was a total surprise," he said. "I was asked to come in for a morning tea and when I walked up the corridor there were 30 to 40 people there, including my wife Jan.” “There was a velvet cloth above the door to what used to be the maternity wing, and I was asked to

pull the tassels. There was this sign saying: Kirkman Wing.” During an impromptu thank you speech, Dr Kirkman said that he was honoured to be aware of having a facility named after him while still alive rather than posthumously, as is often the case. The wing was where Dr Kirkman spent a lot of his time since 1979, delivering babies and providing afterhours care. “Our three kids were born in that wing, and all the doctors used to be rostered to help out with after-hours care.” Eden Private Hospital CEO Ashley Baker said this area of the hospital had been dedicated to Dr Kirkman for all of his years

of service. “This area of the hospital that we have named the ‘Kirkman Wing,’ has a number of rooms that are the link between the Cooroy Medical Centre and Eden Private Hospital, the two areas where David spent most of his time. “We will miss Dr Kirkman, and wish him all the very best in his retirement. "We would like to acknowledge him for all the amazing contributions that he has provided to this hospital and the community.” Since retiring, Dr Kirkman has been helping out at Katie Rose Cottage. “I’ll keep doing that for a few months and then see what else I’d like to do.”

Did someone say free pizza? STAGE one redevelopment of the old Daddows’ parking lot in Cooroy into a part-time pop-up pizza shop is nearly complete. Mobile Pizza Owner Rocky bought the block on Maple Street over a year ago with plans to transform it into a beautifully landscaped pizza and ice cream parlour. Rocky said that after months of hard work - and rain - they had nearly finished. “We have been serving our delicious wood-fired pizzas on Fridays and Sundays.” “The 108-year-old train carriage that we hope to use as an ice cream shop, has been painted and moved into place. "We’re just putting the finishing touches on it, and waiting for approval of the application that we have lodged with Council.” Rocky said that he was very happy with how the block was looking.

From train carriage to ice cream shop. The journey continues for this 108-year-old train carriage now parked at Cooroy.

“We’ve completed Stage One of the landscaping with lots of pots and plants. "It’s looking nice. We’ve tried to keep the flavour of the town.” Rocky is inviting everyone to join them on Thursday June 2, from 5.31pm to 7.30pm, for a couple of

pizza slices. “Anyone is welcome to come down and have a free slice of premium woodfired pizza and check out what we’ve done with the old Daddows parking lot.” For more information on the Pop-up Pizza Shop, visit daddows.com

Wet weather wreaks havoc on Botanic Gardens maintenance A NOOSA Botanic Gardens visitor says she is “terribly disappointed” by the condition of the gardens, but Council says the wet weather has been “challenging”. Jeannine Sewell said she visited the gardens regularly and was "terribly disappointed by their “deplorable state”. “As Noosa prioritises tourism and claims to market its assets, the deplorable state of these gardens is accordingly both incongruous and unacceptable.” Jeannine said that weeds, leaf litter and fallen branches suggested a lack of care. “The area immediately below the amphitheatre is weed-infested, while paths are littered with palm

fronds and leaf litter. The water flow in the creek is impeded by fallen branches and fronds and the general appearance suggests a lack of interest and care.” “Council’s failure to properly develop and maintain this asset is both disappointing and unacceptable.” But Noosa Council said Botanic Gardens staff worked extremely hard to maintain the gardens. “The recent flooding and wet weather have certainly been challenging for all our parks staff, and council officers are continuing to maintain the area in liaison with our wonderful garden volunteers in order to provide a pleasant experience.” Noosa Council continues to develop and maintain

the gardens with help from Friends of the Botanic Gardens. Friends of the Botanic Gardens, as volunteers, assist with maintenance such as planting, pruning, weeding, mulching and general tidying, propagating plants for planting out in the gardens and for sale to the general public to raise funds to improve the gardens. They also provide seasonal guided walks of the gardens.” The Friends are always looking for new volunteers to assist them on Thursday mornings and to help run events and workshops. Noosa Mayor Clare Stewart and a who's who of the Sunshine Coast art communities have been invited to celebrate the launch of the exhibition which will continue until June 28. Noosa Art and Craft

IN BRIEF Polo dates for 2022 are out

LOVERS of the fine sport of Polo may be keen to know what's on the agenda at Noosa Country Polo this year. The three dates to remember are: Dowling Cup Day (June 12), Noosa Polo Cup Day (August 28) and Food & Wine Long Lunch with Chukkas (October 30).

MAY is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and to raise funds and awareness, tickets have gone on sale for the biggest event on the Noosa calendar. The annual Mingle with the Mayor Ball is to be held on September 3 at Peppers Noosa Resort & Villas. Hosted by Womenkind Australia Inc and Patron, Noosa Mayor Clare Stewart, the aim of the gala evening is to raise funds for transitional housing solutions for locals who are experiencing domestic family violence. Womenkind Australia Inc Founder Josanne Falla said that housing is a huge issue, especially in Noosa. “We already have a housing crisis and in 12 months’ time, the National Rental Scheme will end and we will have thousands back looking for housing on the Sunshine Coast,” Josanne said. “We need space now for these vulnerable members of our community and we need to make this a much bigger conversation and bring the whole community together.” “The event will not only raise funds for transitional housing for

victims of domestic and family violence but it will bring together a community of different organisations and start a very important conversation and get everyone joining in.” Cr Stewart said supporting Noosa’s domestic violence response was a Council priority. “The Shine Houses are one of Noosa’s longest-running and most successful domestic violence support initiatives.” “For more than a decade these houses have provided those who are fleeing violent family and domestic situations with transitional accommodation and access to support services in order to help them establish their independence, deal with trauma and get back on their feet.” “Back then, Council provided land for their construction and just recently we provided a further land parcel, and secured funding from the State, to assist with the construction of another house, which I’m pleased to say is now up and running.” But Cr Stewart said that the community also has a part to play and the ‘Mingle with the Mayor’ Ball is an opportunity to dig deep and be a part of the conversation. “Noosa is at its best when

it gets behind its own," Cr Steward said. "The community support and business support for the ‘Mingle with the Mayor’ Ball last year was overwhelming, to say the least.” “Last year’s Ball raised over a quarter-of-a-million dollars to dramatically increase access to specialist DFV counselling services in Cooroy and Noosa.” “I can’t wait to see what we achieve at this year’s event.” Josanne said this year’s Ball, themed The Enchanted Garden, is going to be a night of wow factors. “The theme means to deliver our dreams, to bring out the magic in the world and the room.” “We have an amazing special guest lined up and tentatively booked but yet to be confirmed.” “There will be fun, an amazing three-course meal by Matt Golinski, and endless cocktails together with the opportunity to bid on fabulous auction items and take part in other creative fundraising activities.” For more information on the Mingle with the Mayor Ball, visit: https://events.humanitix.com/ mingle-with-the-mayor-2022

The first event, the Dowling Cup, coincides with the Queen's Birthday long weekend in Victoria, New South Wales, Tasmania and South Australia and promises to be a country style polo experience featuring traditional car boot space hospitality, bars and food trucks, couple with live entertainment and traditional polo favourites including the divot stomp. Noosa Polo Cup Day is known as one of the premier sporting events for the Noosa region and will feature VIP marquees, fashions on the field, and high end entertainment. The invitiation only bespoke dining experience that is the Food & Wine Long Lunch with Chukkas will this year feature a menu inspired by Argentinian food, paired with premium wines and boutique craft beers. Player interviews and a live match will be played too. To find out more visit: noosacountrypolo.com

Pete said it all began when he started relocating hives. “I had a land clearing business and would often come across hives in hollow trees and logs. “We started to relocate them and to date, I estimate I have rescued and relocated well over 100 native beehives. “Considering that each hive usually houses between 3,000 and 7,000 bees, and sometimes more, that is a lot of potential pollinators.” While Pete retired from land clearing some time ago, his work relocating bees is still going strong. These days, other land clearers call him to rescue hives when they come across them. “We have to get them quickly before parasites get in and destroy the hive. “The bees are relocated to a variety of locations – often to farms, as they are popular with farmers, especially those growing macadamia, blueberry, mango, avocados, lychees and strawberries. Macadamia farmers are especially keen because native bees are small enough to get right down into the flowers, unlike the bigger honey bee, and this can lead to improved harvests and bigger fruits.” Pete also places hives on residential properties around Cooroy, Pomona and surrounding areas. “A lot of people think these bees prefer native vegetation, but they actually thrive even more and produce more honey in

areas near urban gardens because of the flowering plants all year round. Native bees play an important role in pollinating both native and exotic plants, including a lot of vegetables and herbs.” Pete has a number of hives at Cooroy home, many still in their original logs and stumps, one of which he rescued when Cudgerie Estate was being cleared some 20 years ago. He also propagates native bees, builds bee boxes and educates people on the “important role these bees play in our ecosystem with the rapid decline in pollinators becoming a real problem around the world” through his stall at local events. “Quality bee boxes are designed to allow the bees to thrive. There are a lot of cheap boxes out there which I refer to as bee coffins. “Many factors are considered in making these ideal conditions, for example, my boxes have thick walls, made from long-

lasting cypress pine, so they are well insulated, just like being inside a log. The ideal temperature for the bees is between 18 – 37 degrees, hence the reason native bees only occur naturally in the warmer, wetter areas of Australia. “If the temperature is not right, the bees remain dormant.” Pete supplies polystyrene covers to prevent the boxes from getting too hot as well as the bottom section “choca-block” with the comb, bees and brood all set up correctly. “A typical native beehive will only produce approximately 1kg of honey a year. This honey is generally called sugarbag honey and has a unique and delectable taste, which explains why it can cost up to $400 a kilo.” Look out for Pete at events like the Gympie Show or the open day with the woodworks at Cooroy. And if anyone is interested in the propagation of native bees, contact Pete on 0422 878 992.

Cooroy woman's five year insurance nightmare WHEN Cyclone Debbie hit in 2017, it was the start of a five-year nightmare for Cooroy resident, Peggie Cordner. Peggie owned a six apartment motel with a restaurant in the heart of Airlie Beach - freshly renovated, fully tenanted and ready for sale. On 28 March 2017, Cyclone Debbie circled for 13 hours with 265k/ph winds, dumping tons of rain. Consequently, the roofs and windows buckled and failed. Peggie said that they had insurance but the process soon "became a nightmare", one that took five years to complete. "We had a very comprehensive insurance cover with one of Australia's biggest insurers. "Very quickly our claim became very complicated due to the offhanded way that we were being treated

by the insurance company and the local council claiming they had lost some of the records for our property. "Because we'd bought the building in 2002, we first had to prove we'd spent money maintaining and improving the property, by producing records and receipts. "Luckily, I keep everything to do with all of our properties. “For some three plus years the insurance company continued to accuse us of not maintaining the property or not getting proper approvals even though we produced the relevant documents. "We managed to reopen the restaurant after a couple of weeks but the motel business was closed for the best part of four years. “We received our two year loss of income cover in bits and pieces over the five

years, and bits and pieces of building cover over that period as well. “We wanted the building to be repaired and back on the market as soon as possible so we had to borrow money where we could to do those repairs.” Even then, Peggie said that they were accused by the insurance company representatives of not performing the repairs up to standard. "Under the guidance of Scott Fawke from Ausure Coast and Country, we eventually had to go to the Ombudsman to get the insurance company to adhere to their contract. This is a long and complicated process.” Scott said that the claim was referred to him six months into the process. "We travelled up to Airlie to see it from the ground, then went about putting

The Airlie Beach property at the centre of the insurance dispute.

pressure on the insurance company and organising part payments to commence repairs.” "After a fairly drawn-out battle, we managed to have the claim resolved with a payout of close to $1.5m for damage and business interruption, which is a bit better than the initial offer of $70,000.” "The final payment came through a few weeks ago." After 1835 days. Peggie said she and her assessors were all staggered at the treatment that they were given by the insurance company and are thankful to Scott for his knowledge and tenacity. "Once we had Scott on board, then we started to get a bit of traction on the claim. Scott knows his contracts inside out and

back to front." Scott said that consumers need to be educated about the difference between direct insurers and insurance brokers. "What we do is service that is quality based. We work for the client, not for the insurers. We have over 200 insurers on our books and some of them are insurers that only work with brokers." Peggie said that now they have received the final payment, they've been able to pay off a lot of debt. "People think you get a big windfall from a claim but you don't. It just pays off what you have already spent. There is no compensation for your thousands of hours of time or the stress you have to endure. “If we hadn't had the backing of our other

companies during those five years, that company would have gone broke and been bankrupted.” Peggie was able to sell the building in April last year. "We would highly recommend Scott and his team for any insurance especially to protect valuable business assets and properties. He knows what is in the 'fine print' and we wouldn't have been able to get this far without his support and knowledge.” Ausure Coast and Country opened its Cooroy Office 12 months ago to provide a community-based service to Cooroy. Persistence pays off for Pomona performer BY GRAEME WILSON

TEENAGE Pomona performer Ashlyn Hehir is keeping the door open on the Wardrobe option as she sets her sights on the bright lights of Broadway. Among the many roles she’s played in her blossoming musical theatre career, 16-year-old Ashy played Madame De La Grande Bouche aka “The Wardrobe” in Little Seed Theatre Company’s stage production of Beauty and The Beast, and has also starred as Wednesday Addams in The Addams Family and will play Serena Katz in the upcoming performance of Fame at The J on September 23 and 24. Another step on the road to a musical career is her selection as a Featured Vocalist in the upcoming Creative Generation: State Schools Onstage production, showcasing the talents of more than 1500 students from across Queensland. CGEN 2022 will be staged at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre from July 14-16 and the Noosa District State High School will also be represented by

Malika Wedlock in the Mass Dance Chorus and Olivia De Wit in the Media Crew and Drama Ensemble. With only 25 students selected for the Featured Vocalist roles, Ashy is delighted to have been chosen to perform on behalf of her school in the event to be televised on Channel 10. “Getting selected as a Featured Vocalist is such an extraordinary opportunity, getting to work with professionals and the experience and exposure is just amazing,” she said. “I’m very proud of what I’ve achieved since I first started in 2017, I’ve definitely grown as a person as well as a performer.” Ashy’s love of music began from an early age and she played saxophone for several years before deciding her own voice was the instrument she most wanted to master. “I just adore live performances. As nerve racking as they may be, the feeling of having a whole audience supporting you and actually hearing them cheer you on in person is a feeling like no other.” Further down the long and winding musical road, Ashy dreams of being involved in

Australian tours of musicals, and if she excels there then New York’s Broadway and London’s West End are on the horizon. Proud mum and muchloved Pomona kindy teacher Tash Hehir is delighted to see her talented daughter chasing her dream. “Little Seed have been her biggest supporters and motivators, the growth that’s occurred has been huge,” Tash said. “She's found her passion and that's fantastic. It’s so good to see Ashy shine and doing what she loves to do.” As a way of giving back to Little Seed, Ashy helps to mentor its younger students, a role she also loves.

“It is super rewarding, that feeling of helping others grow more confident performing, and hopefully inspiring some to follow their musical theatre dreams too." Always looking to refine her skills as a performer, on leaving school Ashy hopes to be accepted into Griffith University’s Conservatorium of Music Musical Theatre course. "If it doesn't work out the first time, I'll just keep trying until I get accepted!" And that right there is what it takes to be Tash Hehir and her musical theatre loving daughter Ashlyn who is set to grace the local stage as Serena Katz in Fame at The J in September. a star.

Oyster basket trial shows early signs of success A TRIAL exercise for the Noosa River Oyster Gardening Project is showing early signs of success. The Noosa Integrated Catchment Association (NICA) is undertaking field trials to determine if the oyster baskets can contain the oyster shells, remain robust and attract wild oysters and other marine species. NICA’s project manager, Alex Western said the trial is going well with juvenile oysters, mussels and other marine species rapidly colonising clean oyster shells deployed in baskets in the Noosa River. “This is great news. Heavy rain and muddy water can impact on marine life, but rain also encourages oysters to spawn. The

oyster shells are attachment points for oyster spat (baby oysters). They also provide homes for a variety of marine life.” As part of the trial, NICA deployed 10 oyster baskets into the main channel of the Noosa River estuary, each containing 5kg of washed, recycled oyster shells. The baskets are suspended into the water column by ropes and wild species can enter them through the large mesh. NICA invited researchers from the Australian Rivers Institute at Griffith University to inspect the baskets and work with NICA to assess the success of the trial. The success of the trial will lead to a broader Oyster Gardening Project whereby

local Noosa residents will adopt and care for baskets of oyster shells over a six to 12 month period. “Many households, community organisations and schools have let NICA know that they are really keen to be part of the Oyster Gardening Project. It is a wonderful project for local people to get involved in, share skills and knowledge and help kick start the re-colonisation of Noosa’s lost oyster reefs.” For further information or to join the program contact NICA at admin@noosariver. com.au. This project is supported by Noosa Shire Council, the Thomas Foundation, the Australian Government and The Nature Conservancy.

Cooroy Shoes' team Maree and Wilhelmina are celebrating six years since Maree decided to buy the shoe shop.

Six years on and going strong SIX years ago, Maree Millar made the decision to buy a little shoe shop in Cooroy. Maree said that little did she know that its reputation was far greater than the size of the store. Today, Cooroy Shoes specialises in shoes for all age groups, offering the latest designs and the best brands. “At Cooroy Shoes, we only have the best quality shoes. We always have the latest styles on offer and try to keep one step ahead. "Buying for the next season is always a challenge because we have to order one year ahead. We don’t always get it right but our aim is to try. “With trends changing so fast, from high fashion stilettos to casual laceups, it is difficult for a lot of people to adjust. But we have seen the change in the styles offered to us by shoe suppliers, both national and international. “Manufacturers are also very aware of the need to protect our feet. The result is that shoe design has come a long way, to be kinder to our feet and more comfortable. Fortunately, the fashion transition to

lower heels has helped. We find we are selling to all age groups from 20 to 100 years old. The choice is only limited by the customer’s own personality. “A lot of shoes are designed in Australia for our market but produced in countries such as Turkey, Portugal, Spain, Vietnam and Israel. Previously up to 70 percent of shoes were manufactured in China, but as the world has become more competitive that is no longer the case. “Our store brands include Naot, Revere, Arcopedico, Rilassare, Cassini, Django and Juilette, Cabello and many more. Maree said that Cooroy Shoes also offers a lot more than just shoes. “We not only have the greatest shoes but also beautiful handbags including a large range Kompanero, which is very sought after, as well as affordable fashion jewellery and scarves to compliment any outfit. We have a large range of Rikaro quirky wall clocks." Maree said that what sets their store apart is individual customer attention, as well as the Loyalty Club which is free to join.

“I have been involved with shoes for over 20 years and have never been helped so much by customer input. We listen to what people are asking for and try to find what they want. We give every customer individual attention. “Customers come from far and wide to our store and we often have busloads of women on tour, often just out for the day, and they tell us Cooroy Shoes is a muststop on their list. “We have loved listening to all our customers over the years and plan to continue listening and learning for many years to come.” Maree said that they are invested in Cooroy and its community, and look forward to celebrating many more birthdays. “It has been an amazing journey in Cooroy and we have enjoyed every minute of the experience. Please let us know if there are any changes you would like to see in the styles we offer.” Drop in and wish Maree and Wilhelmina happy birthday and check out their beautiful range of shoes, handbags, jewellery, scarves and quirky wall clocks.

Music is back at Butter Factory THE Butter Factory Arts Centre is keen to put the pandemic in the rear vision mirror and drive forward with confidence. Before COVID-19 silenced the music, the centre hosted successful Sunday sessions with David Bentley and it’s now ready to host concerts again from the end of this month. The first is on Saturday, May 28 from 3-6pm and will bring an upbeat blend of gypsy jazz and world dance fusion to Cooroy. The exciting acts chosen to launch the new music wave are gypsy jazz standouts Shenzo Gregorio Quartet and energetic world dance fusion quintet Nizami. Having first picked up a violin at age four, Shenzo Gregorio continues to bring a worldly inventiveness to the art of improvising on the violin. Not steeped in any one particular tradition, this freedom has allowed him to be influenced by many countries. With a solid upbringing in classical music, for the past 23 years Shenzo has gone on to perform within the musical traditions of flamenco, gypsy jazz, bluegrass, Indian, rock,

Along with Shenzo, the quartet includes some of Brisbane’s best exponents of the gypsy jazz idiom – John Reeves on piano accordion, Cameron de la Vega on guitar and Peter Walters on double bass. Nizami is also guaranteed to get the Saturday afternoon crowd moving to upbeat rhythms. The quintet’s happy and energetic offering takes in genres ranging from Latin to gypsy, disco to techno, funk to house with a bit of jazz and swing thrown in. Nizami

consists of marimba players Zaia Kendall, Nikki Berry and Michelle Dorendahl, with Gary Ward on bass and Duncan MacQueen on drums. Marimbas are happy and warm-sounding instruments and the driving, upbeat rhythms cannot help but get you up and moving. When do you stop fighting for community consultation? HARDWARE

OPINION PIECE BY COUNCILLOR AMELIA LORENTSON

CELEBRATING

COUNCILS are elected by a community to make decisions on behalf of that community and to provide it with services… However, the public legitimacy for the decisions that a council makes, depends in large part on the extent to which it engages with its community when making decisions. At last month’s Ordinary Meeting, I tried twice, both times unsuccessfully (4:3) to move an amendment to the Oyster Project that requested that: Council consult with stakeholders and the broader community to gauge overall community support for the Renewal of the Noosa River Alliance & Funding Agreement between Noosa Council and The Nature Conservancy; and Council provide a further report on the outcomes of the consultation prior to entering into any further agreement. I supported Council’s report

which stated that ‘the project had notable risks’. I argued that these risks were, in my opinion, significant, and that community support on this project was notably split. Councillors had received a submission, supported by 8 community associations, to end the Alliance Agreement in September 2022, as intended, because: key milestones have not been achieved; the Project does not represent value for the community; and no detailed disclosure of expenditure has been provided to the community. Councillors had also received emails from 3 community associations and residents supporting the continuation of the Alliance. In a nutshell, I was told that Council had already undertaken extensive community consultation and that the ‘community consultation horse’ had already bolted, given the late stage of the agreement. I disagreed. It is my opinion that any

Dear Editor,

decision we make as a council must have the support of the greater community. It is ratepayers’ money, and it should be spent in the public interest on issues that are important to them. When a community is divided, and there is an opportunity to enable participatory democracy, then in my opinion we have the responsibility to do so. Leadership is about finding balance. Finding the middle ground. Or said another way, common ground. That is how we build and strengthen communities. And more importantly, that is how we build confidence in the community that Council is listening and making decisions in their best interests. This is the opinion of Cr Amelia Lorentson, and does not represent the views or majority decision of Council.

Thank you for featuring how very “ticked” off we, the Bendigo Bank Pomona branch customers, are at the closure of this branch and the withdrawal of the ATM, as featured in your 4 May edition. It was particularly disappointing that we were given no prior indication that this was to occur. Yes we were advised by text of temporary branch closures due to staffing, but at no time, until after the fact, did I see any email or text to advise of a permanent closure. There was also no indication the ATM would be closed, until a sign appeared on the dead ATM. This whole event has been very poorly managed by the bank and takes no account of the real needs of the community that this branch was serving. Cheryl Kadinsky Cooran

Referring to your item on dogs and the new playground in the latest Cooroy Rag (4 May 2022). Great paper by the way and I am not a dog owner. I have been to this amazing park on several recent occasions with my family and grandchildren visiting from the UK. The first occasion was the day after it opened. I noted an unleashed dog wandering about near the flying fox. I was immediately taken aback that dogs were even allowed in the park. At the time, I assumed dogs weren’t allowed. I hadn’t realised at the time they are allowed, which surprised me very much. I don’t agree at all. It’s not a place for dogs with so many children about. There are many very responsible dog owners but sadly not all. This is a potential health hazard and who knows what’s in that sand or under all that ground mulch, in the bushes or even in the water. If dogs are to be allowed, they should be on a leash at all times, or in a designated fenced dog area of the park. The Noosa Council wording of the rules is clear but in my view open to rule breaking. It’s an amazing, great park for Cooroy local children and all our welcome visitors, so let’s keep it clean and safe ……please. No dogs in this park. There are plenty of other places for them. THRILLS AND FUN FOR ALL

ROCKETSHIP LANDS IN COOROY

The new nature-based playground in Cooroy provides fun for kids of all ages and abilities, just like thrillseeker Daisy Doherty.

The centrepiece of the Hinterland Playground in Cooroy has arrived. The rocketship, which is almost seven metres tall and weighs around two tonnes was craned into position following its short journey from Studio Steel in Cooroy.

The energetic seven-year-old, who is partly mobile and uses a wheelchair to get around, is a big fan, with the bucket swing and the flying-fox with a harness being two of her highlights. The quiet spaces such as the tunnels and the hidey holes are also a favourite among kids who can experience sensory overload.

Project Manager Paul Brennan said the stainless steel rocketship has been constructed using an old cooling tower that used to be part of the original mill works. “The stainless steel cooling tower along with old fire pits, large steel rings and recycled bridge timbers have been recycled and repurposed as play equipment for this unique playground,” Paul said.

On the day the playground officially opened, Daisy and her family were at the gates ready to play. Dipping her toes in the water-play area with ramp access is also a hit every time Daisy visits, according to Mum, Libby Doherty.

“It’s been an important aspect to the creation of this space to maintain a connection to the history of the site and the rocketship is a great example of this.”

“It really is a beautiful, well-planned and calming playground,” says Libby. “The green grass area is great for picnics, and relaxation and the waterplay area is so fun! The soft surfaces also make a difference for Daisy to be able to enjoy moving around on the ground. The purpose-built accessible toilets and plenty of parking are also appreciated. We live in Noosa and I’m happy to drive out to use the playground anytime.”

Construction will be completed in coming weeks and this unique nature-based, all-abilities playground is scheduled to open to the public in March 2022. The project is proudly funded by the Queensland Government’s Local Government Grants and Subsidies program in association with Noosa Council.

THE Kin Kin Community will be excited to show off their cricketing skills when they take on Noosa Council in the annual Pink Stumps Day on Sunday, June 5. The fun fundraiser is to raise money towards helping the McGrath Foundation to place Breast Care Nurses in communities across Australia. Kin Kin Pink Stumps Day fundraising coordinator Wanda Jardine said spectators should dress up in their finest pink outfits and join the large crowd cheering on their team. “This is serious business and the Kin Kin Community is super excited to show off their superb cricket skills when they take on Noosa Mayor Clare Stewart, Councillors and Council

Staff. Players will be each wearing a pink tutu and are already honing their batting and bowling skills in preparation for the big day.” There will also be lots of great raffle prizes to be won, thanks to the generosity of the local business community. “Last year we raised over $4000. Help us reach the big $5k this year,” Wanda said. McGrath Breast Care Nurses support individuals (and their families) experiencing breast cancer,

by providing physical, psychological, and emotional support. “Sadly, many of us know of someone whose mother, daughter, sister, or partner has been diagnosed with breast cancer," Wanda said. “From the time of diagnosis and throughout treatment, this service is available for free. So come along and enjoy the magic of Pink Stumps Day and help us raise the muchneeded funds to continue these services." Batting opens at 1pm at the Kin Kin Sportsground (after the markets). Gardening Project, which will attempt to grow oyster spat in baskets suspended in the Noosa River to supplement the newly established reefs. Restoring oyster ecosystems is a critical project on the road to reviving the health of the Noosa River system. In addition, students will undertake hypothesis testing of the impacts on oyster growth in controlled lab environments as well as learn about species identification and other assessment techniques of the Noosa River. The students say they are enjoying working on real-life projects that give life to their curriculum while giving back to community. Providing students with

hands-on opportunities to learn essential curriculum has been a goal of EEHub and TNC over the past couple of years. For example, through the Noosa EEHub Bushfire Recovery curriculum, students study the Peregian Beach bushfire site, learn about traditional and current fire management practices, and restore sites via weeding and planting. Noosa EEHub plans to continue developing curriculum programs that support the restoration of the Noosa River in collaboration with local river management groups. This education program is funded by The Thomas Foundation, Noosa Shire Council and TNC.

Happy birthday to the Kindness Club THE Kindness Club is celebrating eight years of kind deeds! Since beginning in April 2014, the club has shared more than 100 kind deeds and projects with the community. The projects have included: hampers for local emergency services; handing out over 100 free coffee vouchers in town (thanks to the generosity of Nick at Jamaica Blue); the collection of over 600

books for children in Kiribati; positive quote posters for local businesses; handmade gifts for nursing home residents; and writing and printing a book, 'Bear and Mouse - A Kindness Story.' More than 150 children (aged 5–12 years) have been involved in the projects over the years. The club's motto: 'Little hearts can make a big difference" - perfectly encapsulates the warm hearts and contributions of

each and every Kindness Club member. Club coordinator Wendy Scott said the ongoing support the Club had received from the community was incredibly appreciated. "Thank you for your participation, contributions, and for every gift and kind word! "A huge thank you to our special friend Phil for his many donations and for his belief in the club and our

mission for the entire eight years! "To all our members, including all those who have grown up and moved on to high school and beyond, you will always be a much-loved part of The KindnessClub. Individual Eye Care Solutions.

Cool news for local high school POLITICIANS don’t always show up with cool news, but local members Robert Skelton and Jason Hunt were somewhat of a breath of fresh air on a visit to Noosa District State High School. NDSHS was one of four Queensland state schools selected to showcase the completion of the Palaszczuk Government's $477 million Cooler, Cleaner Schools initiative. It ensured that every classroom, library and staff room in every Sunshine Coast state school was air conditioned in time for Term 2. Principal Stacy Wilmore said it was an honour to be among the selected schools, with the initiative providing much-needed cooling relief

for classrooms across both campuses. During their recent school visit, Member for Nicklin Rob Skelton and Member for Caloundra Jason Hunt announced the achievement had been delivered more than two months ahead of schedule. Ms Wilmore said the new air conditioning was very well-received by the school community, particularly given the local climate. "Controlled temperatures ensure all students stay healthy, comfortable and focused in any weather and they also ensure both students and teachers are motivated to work to the best of their abilities," she said. "It feels comfortable to study and learn in an

environment without being impacted by external factors like the temperature. "The air conditioning project has significantly improved the quality of our learning environments across both of our campuses for students and has received overwhelmingly positive feedback from our entire school community. "This program has already helped our students and staff feel more comfortable in teaching and learning environments." Mr Hunt said the use of air ventilation and air conditioning systems that introduced fresh air from outside could also help minimise transmission of COVID-19 in schools.

Girls ready to take to the floor AFTER two long years of COVID lockdowns and floods getting in the way of training and competitions, the girls program at Cooroy Gymnastics Club is firing up for the first event of the 2022 calendar. The club reported strong numbers this year within its competitive program, including its largest ever number of Level 3 and over women's artistic gymnasts. Under the watchful eye

of their coaches, the Cooroy Gymnastics Club's girls squad have been perfecting their routines in the lead up to the Sunshine Coast Classic hosted by the Sunshine Coast Gymnastics Academy at Woombye on May 28 and 29. The team will back up their performance at Woombye the following weekend (June 4 and 5) at the Maroochy Beach

Invitational. These two Sunshine Coast events will be hotly contested, with clubs coming from Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and the Wide Bay Burnett regions to compete in the hope of qualifying for the Queensland Junior State Championships to be held in Brisbane in September later this year. Good luck girls!

COOROY Tennis has stepped up its technological game to make use of Tennis Australia’s “Book-A-Court” program. Book-A-Court allows players access to court hire through an online booking and payment system on the Clubspark website. The four hardcourts in Cooroy may now be booked for casual play by community members, in addition to club members, through the simple online system. Once a booking is made, a pin code is provided, allowing access to the

courts through an electronic gate. Previously, casual players needed to contact the club secretary, receive a code, unlock a secured cabinet, then use, and later return, a court key, as well as manually record the booking. Club president Ian Garvey said he expected the new system to boost bookings thanks to its simplicity of use and the increased flexibility it offered members and guests when it came to making the decision to organise a game and then being able to simply go

online, find a time to play that suited everyone and pay too. One important aspect of the system is the integration of court lighting with the booking sytem. Soon, evening bookings will incorporate an automated lighting link, which will enable extended court use for players. The new system was funded through grants from the State Government and Noosa Shire Council, together with club contributions. To book, visit: play.tennis. com.au/cooroytennisclub

Extra storage a big boost for Pony Club WITH a bit of help from a Gambling Community Benefit Fund grant and the expertise of the The Shed Company Cooroy, the Cooroy Horse and Pony Club has gained a new storage shed on its grounds at Johnson Park. Club secretary Leeona Baxter said it was nice to be able to use a local Cooroy company for the project, especially as they had always been great supporters of the club.

"They were fantastic to deal with from start to finish and I would not hesitate to recommend their services to anyone," Leeona said. "I would also like to acknowledge the efforts of past committee members Simon Crock and Siona Howard." "It takes a lot of behindthe-scenes work to make a project like this happen and both members played an integral role." The new shed provides

the club with a secure place to store its trailer and equipment and now allows direct access into the arena. It also provides an additional undercover area for spectators. Leeona said the club had a strong core of active members who went out of their way to help strengthen its foundations. "Members came together for a working bee after the recent floods to clean up the grounds and transfer

COOROY Golf Club manager Wayne Patston has offered a big thank you to Club president Terri Cairns, pictured left, for coming up with the idea of a flood appeal raffle to help cover the cost of repairs to the course, and for helping to source prizes. "To our amazement we collected over 45 gifts and we raised $4000 in cash - this was supported by our members and the community," Wayne said. He said State MP Rob Skelton was among the guests when the raffle prizes were drawn - and he also wanted to thank Wooly and Cam Darby for their help on the day.

the equipment into the new shed," Leeona said. "That's what I love about our club, the sense of community and working together. We currently have about 50 members who all pitch in to get the job done." While the club has secured its major sponsors for the year, it is still in need of sponsors for 10 trophy sets at $100 each set. The trophies will be presented after competition days.

Hamilton clan bowling them over at Cooroy AFTER 52 years playing lawn bowls in Cooroy, Gordon Hamilton could certainly teach the next generation a thing or two! Every Wednesday night, Gordon can be found on the greens with his son Craig and his grandchildren Kaleb and Bronte, all pictured right, in the Business Bowls Competition. For the Hamiltons it's a great way to spend time out each week as a family and they're encouraging

others to come along and try out the fun. If you are interested in learning to play lawn bowls, social bowls are played every Tuesday and Saturday afternoon at the Cooroy Community Bowls

Club located at the Saw & Mill Restaurant, 5 Opal Street, Cooroy. No need to book, simply turn up at noon to join in. For more information, call the Club's president, Maureen - 0419 588 661.

Your Voice! Your Budget!

The proposed 2022-23 Council Budget is now out for community feedback. The recent Liveability Survey, completed by over 1600 people, has helped shape the draft 2022-23 budget. We have also endeavoured to meet community expectations, deliver a significant capital works program and fund over 100 different services to the community. The ongoing impacts of COVID-19 and the 2022 February floods have placed added pressure on shaping this draft budget. Like you, increases in fuel, insurance and goods and services have also added pressure on Council’s costs. Council is asking for your views on a range of budget initiatives and projects.
