COOROY came alive to celebrate Christmas at the annual Christmas in Cooroy event.

It is believed close to 10,000 people attended the community celebration, organised by the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce (CCC), on 9 December.

CCC president Sirah Robb said it was the biggest crowd they've ever seen at Christmas in Cooroy.

"I've spoken to many who said they've never seen so many people."

Sirah said all the food traders, shop owners, stalls, attractions and performers were well-received and supported.

"We had more food retailers and a lot more shops doing late-night trading this year and all I've spoken with so far have said they were flat out all night.

"New attractions such as the climbing wall and boxing showcase were really popular.

"The special constable awards for well-behaved kids was a huge hit as well – the police did a great job.”

Sirah said there were lots of contestants in all the competitions vying for substantial prizes and prize money put up by local businesses.

"The Jingle Joggers Jaunt around Cooroy competition did really well and I see it becoming even more popular next year now everyone has a taste of what it is. It was like the Amazing Race but Christmas-themed and around Cooroy.

"Mayor Clare Stewart was there to start the race and present prizes to the winners.

"Kids in the bike decorating competition put in lots of effort to win prizes, and it was great to see the Santas running up the street. This year's winner won the title for the second year in a row."

Santa arrived in local car enthusiast Alan Kenzler's classic Holden FE and was in hot demand.

"Families were lining up all night for a photo with Santa and loved their free show bag with so many goodies from local businesses," Sirah said.

Art Centre's (BFAC) Christmas Party and markets were also hugely popular.

BFAC gallery coordinator Kevin Wilson said the markets, food stalls and live music were all packed.

"Thousands of people poured through and around the butter factory to enjoy the art in the gallery and market stalls.

"While the Santas raced up the main street, five potters went head-to-head in the studio in a race to make a teapot in the annual pottery throw down.”

Sirah said it was a magical

night to remember.

"I was honoured to lead such a dedicated team of volunteers who worked over six months prepping to bring it all together. It's such a big job to put on an event of this scale. They all deserve to be incredibly proud of the event they delivered to our community.

"To see everyone come together having fun and enjoying the night was so rewarding for us all."

alive to celebrate Christmas

From the desk of your roaming editor

‘TIS the season to be jolly and if all the smiles at Christmas in Cooroy is anything to go by, the festive season is off to a great start.

It was a fantastic night, with thousands of people lining Cooroy’s streets to watch Santa arrive, kids on their dressed-up bikes, the annual Santa race and the lighting of the Christmas tree.

My family and I loved seeing people we knew, buying gifts, eating delicious food, watching all the fun entertainment and getting into the spirit of Christmas. It was truly alive that night.

Similarly, Pomona spread the Christmas cheer at the annual Pomona Night of Lights.

Hundreds packed Stan Topper Park to sing carols, listen to live music and watch the impressive laser show.

What amazing communities we live in. It’s hard to believe another year has passed already.

And what a year it has been!

From myself and the team at the Cooroy Rag, we’d like to thank our readers, advertisers, volunteers and and committee for another year of support.

Your community paper keeps going from strength to strength and that’s all thanks to each and every person who gets behind it. It’s your paper.

Have a safe and merry Christmas. Until next year,

Alex

THE speed limit on Louis Bazzo Drive has been reduced to 80 km/h.

Transport and Main Roads Regional Director Scott Whitaker said the 90 km/h speed limit on Louis Bazzo Drive, between Pomona and Boreen Point, has been reduced to improve road user safety.

"This follows a formal speed limit review which includes a road safety-based risk assessment process, and recommended reducing the speed limit.

"The review process considers a range of factors such as road function, roadside environment, standard of road construction, prevail-

ing traffic speeds and crash history,” Mr Whitaker said. Work to implement the new speed limit, including sign replacement, took place last week.

“I urge all motorists to observe the new speed limit signage and to always drive to conditions," Mr Whitaker said.

FROCKED up and looking fabulous in fluro, more than 170 people let their body talk at the Majestic Theatre last month to raise money for a young local girl with childhood cancer.

The Let’s Get Physical for Lillian fundraiser, organised by Erin Yarwood of E Fitness Pomona, raised $8,400 for the three-yearold and her family.

Erin said what started out as just a small idea a couple of months ago turned into the super colourful, fun night they had on 26

November.

“There was a photo booth, some amazing balloon making, a performance from the Kin Kin Drama Group, an ‘80s aerobics class, live art and a flash mob dance thrown into the mix, just to name a few. Everyone donated their time and energy to help.

“Plus some amazing food served up by Black Ant Gourmet while a ripper mix of ‘80s tunes played all night.

“So many amazing local prizes were donated for

“Together we all raised a whopping $8,400 to hand over to Lillian and her family to help them out during these tough times. This was all thanks to ticket sales of the evening, raffle ticket sales, Ann’s art auction, money from the photo booth, a large cut of the bar takings from the Majestic, and all profit made from Black Ant catering – plus numerous cash donations to the cause. What a community,” Erin said.

Lillian’s grandmother Maureen said on Facebook they are amazed.

“A great surprise and wonderful support from the community. Thank you to Erin and the whole community. We are so overwhelmed by this.”

COOROY'S popular playground is now open longer.

The Hinterland Adventure Playground will stay

open an extra hour until 7 pm during December and January.

ture Services Director Larry Sengstock said the longer hours – from 6 am to 7 pm every day – will provide more play time for local and visiting families over the holiday period.

"Over the summer period, we want as many families and visitors to continue to enjoy this wonderful playground.

"The playground is certainly helping to foster a love for the outdoors among young children, and we want to encourage that as much as possible," he said.

Mal Scott with a local lad receiving one of the 30 police caps and five junior police uniforms handed out by Cooroy Police.

ANOTHER busy couple of weeks for local police with many Cooroy locals being woken late at night to the sound of the police helicopter (Polair) in the vicinity of Pine Street, Cooroy, after a police pursuit that originated in Brisbane and ended in Cooroy with the successful deployment of stingers (road spikes) on the Bruce Hwy and the arrest of a 39-yearold Kallangur man on 16 serious charges.

The alleged offences include domestic violence offences, dangerous driving, evading and seriously assaulting police. Polair continues to be a game changer as the eye in the sky. It enables police ground units to maintain a safe distance behind suspect vehicles and the apprehension of offenders, using high-tech infrared cameras to direct ground units to the alleged offenders as they attempt to flee the scene.

Cooroy continues to be a very safe place to live; however, we are not immune to becoming victims

of crime so everyone needs to be responsible for their own safety by locking their houses and vehicles and properly securing keys and valuables even when at home at night. This advice is critically important, as last week a Cooroy residence was unlawfully entered late at night and the family car was stolen along with credit cards and a wallet.

The number one method used by offenders to steal cars in this smart-carand-key era is to target a residential street and literally check the doors and windows of every home, and the first open or unlocked door they come to will be the victim of their next crime. It's tempting in summer to leave doors and windows open and unlocked but unfortunately, it's just not safe to do so anymore.

On a positive note, within 24 hours, police arrested and charged a 29-yearold Caboolture man with burglary and unlawful use of motor vehicle offences and recovered the stolen vehicle.

Unfortunately, the victim of this crime is still out of pock-

et a considerable amount of money, which is less than ideal just before Christmas. The Cooroy Blue Light disco has finished for the year with another successful disco with 150+ children at the event in November. A huge thank you to the Cooroy Rag for donating $1,000 to the disco to assist with the costs associated with running the disco. Some of these funds were used to award Special Junior Constable Awards and junior police uniforms to Cooroy kids for good behaviour and being good Cooroy citizens. The Mobile Police Beat, police motorbike and mobile lock-up were a huge hit with the kids as well.

Estimates of 10,000 attending the Christmas in Cooroy street event is an amazing result for the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce – so well done to the organising committee led by Sirah Robb. The strength of the Cooroy community never ceases to impress all who live or visit this amazing town.

Merry Christmas to all from the Cooroy Police.

POMONA Fire and Rescue Station has a new firefighter.

Local Pomona plumber Jimmy Wilkins has completed the intense two-week Queensland Fire and Emergency Services’ training course ARTEP to become an auxiliary firefighter.

Jimmy said it is a lifelong dream come true.

“I’ve always wanted to be a firefighter. I tried out for a full-time position years ago but after moving to Pomona

18 months ago, the opportunity arose to join the local station and I jumped on it.”

Jimmy said all firefighters have to be at a station for a certain amount of time before they can complete the ARTEP course.

“ARTEP is the Auxiliary Firefighter Recruit Course where we learn the ins and outs of firefighting.

“It allows me to get on the truck and get involved and be a body. I have to do a

heap more courses to be road traffic collision (RTC) qualified.”

As an auxiliary firefighter, Jimmy still works full time and is on call 24/7 to respond to emergencies.

“Pomona is an auxiliary station so everyone works full time and has to drop and run if they get paged.

“We have to be at the station and turned out within seven minutes of a call so when the pager goes off everyone is in a rush.

“We have two different uniforms depending on the emergency that we have to get changed into – the structural fire uniform and the RTC and wildfire uniform.”

At the time of printing, Jimmy had received two callouts.

“I graduated two weeks ago and have had two callouts so far, which have been exciting. Thankfully, no one was injured in either one.”

Jimmy said he loves doing his bit for the community he lives in and being a part of the team at Pomona Fire and Rescue Station.

“The crew at Pomona station are amazing. There are all different levels of experience from 40-year veterans to a year. There is such a mass of knowledge at the station.”

SEASONS IGA Garnet Street will officially open on Wednesday 21 December at 8 am.

The former Wimmers Factory Shop and Save supermarket on Garnet Street has been closed since 30 November to undergo a complete transformation.

Seasons IGA CEO Dustin Pereira said they have added a gourmet deli and cheese wall and added 10,000 new product lines.

“New lighting, new shelves, new layout, with

some theatre to top it off and create an amazing shopping experience.

“It will be a destination for gourmet and specialty products. We have a larger range of products including gourmet, deli, hot foods, specialty cheeses and a larger mix of direct local products.”

As well as new products, Seasons IGA Garnet Street is looking for new staff.

Operations manager Robert George said they have a number of avail-

able roles in grocery, deli, produce, customer service, dairy and freezer.

“Anyone who would like to join our team can send their resume to robertg@ seasonsiga.com.au.”

The store reopening will include festivities such as Santa to greet families and giveaways.

“Seasons IGA Garnet Street will be open from 6 am to 8 pm every day of the year, including Christmas day and all the other public holidays,” Dustin said.

PUBLICLY accessible Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) have been fitted at Cooroy and Pomona ambulance stations.

The AEDs are the result of a policy developed between the Cooroy and District Local Ambulance Committee (LAC) and Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) following the 2022 floods.

LAC President Linley Macleod said after the floods the LAC looked at options to enhance community resilience and identified an opportunity to provide community access to AEDs.

“A new policy was developed between the LAC and the QAS where LACs can donate an AED for affixing on the outside of the ambulance station, with the QAS committing to the ongoing servicing and maintenance of the AEDs.

“After community feed-

back, the LAC decided the first two stations to receive the AEDs would be Cooroy and Pomona in consideration of their location within the townships and the challenges around accessibility concerns when it’s flooding.

“The LAC recognises the importance of early AED availability in a cardiac arrest and strongly encourages the community to consider where public access defibrillators can be supported,” Ms Macleod said.

QAS Clinical Director Tony Hucker said the QAS welcomes the contribution to have the AEDs at the two stations.

“This is a fantastic initiative by the LAC. It just demonstrates what commitment they have to cardiac arrest survival. In order for us to save more lives from cardiac arrest we need to have

more AEDs in the community and more people trained in CPR.

“There is no doubt if you get access to someone who is trained in CPR and there is an AED close by, your survival is very, very good compared to the other option where no one is around or no one is trained to do CPR or there’s not an AED.

“This is a great start. I think having it outside an ambulance station like this is really good. The community can see it. We need to think about a 500 m radius around the ambulance station where the local community members will know it's there if it is needed and we just need to replicate this.”

The new publicly accessible AED at Pomona Ambulance Station is the latest to join an existing network of AEDs around town.

Pomona library kiosk now open

A SELF-SERVICE book-vending library kiosk is now open in Pomona.

The library ‘BookShelf’ kiosk, containing more than 200 items for borrowing, is available at the Pomona & District Community House on Memorial Avenue.

Borrowers can browse and make a selection via a touchscreen that guides them through the borrowing and returns process, between 9 am and 4 pm Monday to Friday. All they need is a Noosa library card.

Community House Coordinators Heather Manders and Susan Schiotz have welcomed the addition of the BookShelf kiosk.

"It's an exciting new chapter to have the library BookShelf complement our

suite of community services," said Ms Schiotz.

Libraries and Galleries Manager Tracey King said council's aim was to extend library services beyond the Noosaville and Cooroy library branches.

"The kiosks are part of our new outreach/community-based library service to provide easier and improved access to library items.

"The Mobile Library is a much loved and utilised service visiting Pomona once a week and I'm pleased that we can offer additional access to library items with the new BookShelf,” she said.

Ms King said it was wonderful for Noosa Library Service to work closely with the Pomona & District Community House commit-

tee to provide the new service. The BookShelf kiosk at Pomona is the second in the Noosa Shire.

"Our first BookShelf kiosk opened at Peregian Beach Community House back in August and is proving to be popular.

"We know there is an avid reading community in Pomona who are looking forward to being able to access library services through the new BookShelf," Ms King said.

Artwork from local First Nations’ artist and author/ illustrator Gregg Dreise is featured as part of the kiosk design.

Pomona reno provides space for new businesses

AN extensive refurbishment of Pomona’s old railway hotel has provided space for eight new businesses.

Vibe Stores Pomona on Factory Street is now open, with two tenancies already trading.

A further four businesses will be open by the end of this year and all eight by the end of January 2023.

Owner Adam Schmidt said they bought the old building late last year and did a “ridiculous amount of work” to turn it into Pomona’s wellness and lifestyle business hub.

“The building is the remnants of the old Railway Hotel. It used to be two storeys but the top level burned down in 1965. The building there now was re-erected from what was left over from the fire.

“When we bought it, it

was in very bad condition. It had been underwater many times.

“Our priority was to save the building and the shed out the back by first raising them out of the water course.”

Adam said they raised the front building by a metre and the back shed by 1.2 m, then extensively renovated both.

“Every trade used was local from the two different builders, the painter, sparky, plumbers, and concreters. We really tried to share it around in this little community we live in.

“We’re thrilled with what we’ve done and so happy with the outcome. It looks beautiful.

“They are quaint with a modern name – they needed a quirk to stand out.”

Whether inspiration for the name came from the

movie The Castle or not, one thing Adam is sure about is that the aim of the project was to provide affordable tenancies to local businesses.

“We’ve run many successful businesses and I really want to encourage and support those tenants who have never gone out on their own before.

“All of the tenants heard about Vibe; we didn’t advertise. We went ahead with locals who we felt good about.

“All eight tenants are local businesses. They are a hairdresser, photographer, real estate agency, beautician, osteopath, psychologist, pilates and yoga, and barbershop.

“We’re really excited about it. We want to revitalise Factory Street and now we have eight great local businesses on this street.”

Cooroy pharmacy shortlisted for award

LIVELIFE Pharmacy Cooroy is celebrating another milestone.

The Maple Street pharmacy has been shortlisted as one of six finalists in the Pharmacy Guild of Australia’s 2023 Pharmacy of the Year awards.

Proprietor Jacquie Meyer said their commitment to a strong set of values is an important foundation for the success of LiveLife Pharmacy Cooroy.

“LiveLife Pharmacy Cooroy has four values that it operates by. These are: laugh and enjoy the day, inspire others, fully engage, and enrich their day," Ms Meyer said.

"This applies to not only staff engagement but also for our customers.

"Our staff also undergo an in-house-developed customer service training program called 'making a difference’, which ensures all of the staff are confident in our service standards.

"We also have our staff trained

in Pharmacy Guild courses to ensure up-to-date knowledge across all areas of the pharmacy."

The Australia-wide 2023 Pharmacy of the Year awards process aims to find the country’s foremost community pharmacy which is recognised and celebrated for its achievements, its innovation and its commitment to patients and communities.

Ms Meyer said LiveLife Pharmacy Cooroy ticks all these boxes.

“The pharmacy provides a range of extra services and has embraced and developed technology.

“Its extensive delivery service is now managed by an in-house app developed to track, plot and record delivery services without the need for a third-party provider.

“Further highlighting its commitment to strong and pragmatic collaboration, the pharmacy

this year has been working on the development of its inaugural Health Expo for the region, at which it plans to bring all healthcare providers together in the one place for community accessibility.”

Ms Meyer summed up the pharmacy as one providing a large range of advice and services to all areas of health and well-being for the community.

"We are the central point not only for natural health advice, general pharmacy enquiries, medication management, vaccinations and Community Pharmacy Agreement services but also for hospitalisation services and discharge planning back into the community.

"Our pharmacists are providing the entire spectrum of healthcare in Cooroy and it all centres on our community pharmacy.

Ms Meyer said the pharmacy's health promotion activities, education seminars and information presentations highlighted the vast array of patients that it accessed.

"And we continue to access them and grow the numbers of people we provide services to," Ms Meyer said.

"Our pharmacy has seen significant growth in sales, customers and prescriptions as a result of our refit and our pharmacist service model, highlighting the value our local community has on our pharmacists and the advice that we provide every day.”

Couple showcase the power of pilates

THERE is a new fitness obsession in town changing mindsets and bodies of all ages and abilities through high-energy and uplifting workouts.

Studio Pilates Noosa owners Laz and Timea Pocze said the hype is well-deserved, as they also fell in love with pilates about 15 years ago.

"Back home in Hungary, I was going to a gym where Timea was a pilates instructor and she was studying law at the time," Laz said.

"I saw a gorgeous woman and I wanted to know more about pilates. She invited me to a class and after that, I fell in love with pilates and my wife too."

Studio Pilates sets itself apart with innovative video technology that allows the instructors to focus on perfecting techniques.

The science of sequencing plus ever-changing workouts keep the body guessing to give the desired results.

"I am studying physiotherapy as well, so our team also focuses on technical corrections from a clinical aspect," Laz said.

"I truly believe pilates is the best workout if you're

looking for a lean, toned body. It's also very good for your posture and core strength, as well as being easy on your joints, so we are able to work with so many conditions.

"The workout programs are planned by an experienced physiotherapist, so it has a great focus on safety while making sure you get a dynamic workout in."

Since taking over Studio Pilates Noosa in January 2022, the couple has im-

WELL, it’s beginning to look and feel a lot like Christmas right across the shire. Last Friday night’s Christmas in Cooroy was simply magical: full of laughter, Christmas cheer and an abundance of community spirit. Huge congratulations to the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce and so many local businesses and volunteers who made the event possible. It just gets bigger and better.

Speaking of holidays, the Go Noosa Free Holiday Buses are back for the holiday period from 10 December 2022 to 22 January 2023.

The free service 065 Loop Bus is greener than ever with the addition of an electric bus. To check out free travel on five existing Translink buses that service Sunshine Beach, Sunrise Beach, Noosa Parklands, Tewantin, Noosa Civic, Cooroy, Cooran and Pomona please visit www.translink.com.au.

Noosa Council continues to lead the way in disaster preparedness and mitigation. We have partnered with US tech company Pano Al to trial

360-degree, ultra-high-definition cameras and advanced Al technology to detect bushfires early, verify their location and provide real-time intelligence. We are the first council in Queensland to partner with the company to trial the technology. The aim is to demonstrate the capabilities of new technology to improve the way we react and respond to fires.

Pano Stations have been installed at Mt Tinbeerwah lookout in Tewantin National Park and on Black Mountain to continuously scan the landscape to patrol and identify potential bushfire activity.

Rapid confirmation of a fire may help our fire emergency personnel to identify and extinguish a blaze before it becomes a threat.

The Cooroy Belli Creek Road Bridge replacement in Cooroy is now complete and open. It’s a two-lane, $1.3 million bridge. Now wider, safer and stronger and constructed with a 100year life design, it is the third bridge to be improved in the hinterland in the past 18

months. During construction, the bridge closure impacted the daily travel patterns of residents, and so we thank residents for their patience and understanding during the construction.

Finally, as we near Christmas, bin collection days remain unchanged over the Christmas and New Year period so please put your bins as usual. If you fill up your wheelie bin early over the break and need an extra rubbish, recycling or garden waste pickup, you can book an extra one-off bin collection online for around $15. Go to www.noosa.qld.gov.au/ online-waste-forms

As this is my last column before Christmas, I would like to take this opportunity, on behalf of Noosa Council and all councillors, to thank you for your ongoing support throughout the year. We wish you and your loved ones a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and every blessing for 2023. We look forward to working with and for you next year.

Working for Noosa Communities

2022 has been quite a milestone year for the LiveLife Pharmacy at Cooroy with the celebration of their 90th anniversary in November, and the recent announcement that they have been shortlisted as one of six finalists in the 2023 Pharmacy of the Year awards.

The Pharmacy Guild of Australia award aims to identify and celebrate community pharmacies that demonstrate ongoing innovation and commitment to their patients and communities.

Congratulations to Jacqui and the team at LiveLife, who have been recognised for their many years of service to the Cooroy community, and how well they have adapted and responded over the last few years to the impact of Covid and the challenges this posed for their patients and customers.

To date, the LiveLife pharmacy group has also given out over $500,000 through their Community Support Program to not-for-profit

community and support groups and charities.

This program has supported several local and regional groups who deliver services to families, young children, native and domestic animals, community events, and environmental projects.

If your group is not already registered for this program, contact LiveLife and get your application in now.

The Cooroy Pomona Lions Club is working cooperatively with the Cooroy Pomona RSL Sub Branch and the Noosa Council to continue the restoration of the Pomona Rotunda War Memorial.

The Lions Club will be applying for funding from the federal government’s Saluting Their Service Commemorative Grants Program to install a flagpole, commemorative stone, and memorial seat at the site.

In 2018, the first stage of restoration of this soldiers’ memorial was a truly cooperative project with volunteers from a range of community groups and local

businesses working together to repair the roof and upgrade the electrical wiring, breathing new life into this community space.

This community project is designed to bring renewed emphasis to the wartime service and sacrifice of local men and women and to reinvigorate an important regional memorial as an appropriate space for future commemorative activities.

Please take care on the roads and all the best for a safe and happy Christmas and New Year.

Christmas everyone! After the closing of Parliament for the year, it has been wonderful to be able to attend so many festive events, including the wonderful carol singing at the Pomona Night of Lights. Thank you to Heather, Susan and the Pomona Community House team for organising. It has also been appreciated to catch up with the Cooroy Pomona Lions Club, celebrate the revocation of the Pomona Men’s Shed site, and attend the Noosa Landcare Skilling Queenslanders graduation.

It was with great happiness that I managed to get to Co-

AT a recent general meeting, I moved a motion in regard to the Integrated Water Quality Monitoring Program: that Council investigates the feasibility of developing a citizen science water quality monitoring program designed to measure and manage the environmental health of the Burgess Creek catchment, and Cooroy and Six Mile Creek catchment, as well as the impact of Unitywater wastewater discharge and outflow and SEQ treatment plant discharge and explore funding opportunities for the monitoring program such as through the Unitywater Community Partnerships

I also am aware that Col takes the time to look out for those who live alone and ensures contact is maintained. Thanks, Col, you are an inspiration, an example of goodness and should be highly esteemed by the Cooroy community. I personally admire your commitment to street cleaning and the well-being of others – Gayle Loveridge.

BOUQUETS to Pomona Post Of-

Programs. My reasons are we have communities that are distrustful of companies and governments doing their own monitoring of water and soil pollution. My motion seeks to address or restore this trust by training and empowering community volunteers, e.g. Surfriders and Burgess Creek Bushcare Group and other local community groups and residents in the Burgess Creek and Six Mile Creek catchment, to collect water and soil quality samples following correct protocols monthly and during holiday periods, after heavy rainfalls, and when the water quality is poor.

you all.

We need to give communities the tools they need to measure and monitor water and soil quality that is accepted into a database and used to guide management. This will provide another layer of information on contaminants that threaten public health that could be overlooked by regulators.

It will also send a message that if you don’t operate in a way that respects this community and environment, then we are going to find out about it and hold you accountable. It was supported by the whole of Council and ratified at Thursday’s Ordinary Meeting. Amelia

THE Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre (CBAC) is asking for works for its resale exhibition New Homes for Old Art from 20 January to 19 February 2023.

Artwork can be by a well-known artist or work that is distinctively from an art period – for example, art nouveau, art deco or modernism.

It can be a 2D piece or a decorative work.

Already works submitted include a Sidney Nolan print, Norman Lindsay prints, art deco lamps and mirrors and even a Kiss pinball machine.

A commission on sales from New Homes for Old Art will be used to support the CBAC’s Mirror Mirror exhibition and celebratory events at CBAC around the 2023 International Women’s Day.

Mirror Mirror seeks to explore oneself through their reflection in a mirror.

Each artist will be challenged to create two artworks: one a portrait on an actual mirror, and the second a work which could be a painting or sculpture that contains their reflection.

To submit works for sale in New Homes for Old Art contact by email to coordinator@butterfactoryartscentre.com.au

Mirror Mirror exhibition will be held at the CBAC from 24 February to 26 March 2023.

HAY, all my equine friends. We are going to have a chat about the warmer weather now arriving, which is going to bring on those pesky flies that often start to irritate our eyes.

You will notice your horse will start getting swollen eyes or discharge from one or both eyes.

What you can do to make it more comfortable and help prevent the problem is to use a fly mask.

There are plenty of varieties available at any feed barn or saddlery. You can also use a fly repellent but

be sure not to make contact with the eye itself.

Keep in mind that after rain or showers the repellent will wash off. Every second day would be good to keep up with treatment.

Flies are also known to transmit a disease called ‘BPV’ which can cause sarcoids.

These corneal ulcers can also develop if the horse rubs or scratches its eyes on either legs or other services. This is serious so veterinary assistance is definitely required to treat this problem. The flies

congregate around the eye trying to drink the fluid at the corner of the eye. Flies carry bacteria on their feet and when looking for moisture they deposit bacteria, larvae, and parasites on the face and around the eyes.

This summer look after your ponies and make them comfortable. It’s an easy fix that can make your equine friend much happier over the hotter months.

Wishing everyone a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

See you all next year. Ride safe.

Annual writing award won by local student

THE Laraine Mahoney Memorial Writing Award for 2022 has been won by Cooroy State School Year 6 student Jordan Garvey.

The annual award honours the memory of Laraine Mahoney, a former teacher and member of the Cooroy Noosa Genealogy Group.

Each year, the award, a gift certificate and a trophy are

presented to a graduating student who has demonstrated outstanding writing skills throughout the year. It is jointly funded by the genealogy group and Cooroy book clubs Laraine belonged to.

Students are asked to write on a theme in English class and the assessment helps to determine the prize winner.

This year, students were asked to write a letter to the future, which might be read by another student in 30 years’ time so that the reader could get a sense of history from a student’s perspective in 2022.

Jordan’s essay addressed the future reader, telling of his home life and school in Cooroy in the year 2022. It mentioned a range of subjects from sports to politics and the pandemic.

He also tackled economics and environmental problems. His upbeat musings about NASA landing robot rovers on Mars left the impression of an optimistic, thoughtful young scholar with high hopes for the future.

Jordan is a high-achieving student and was a school captain during his final year at primary school.

Car club’s car show a huge success

RSL Sub Branch welcomes younger veterans

THE Cooroy Pomona RSL Sub Branch has hosted a special session for veterans of more recent conflicts and peacekeeping operations.

that the RSL can provide them.

Winner of the people’s choice award, Ashleigh with the 1956 VW Beetle.

THE annual Cooroy Car Show hosted by the Combined Coastal Car Club Inc was enthusiastically supported again this year. Owners took advantage of perfect weather to fill Johnson Park with a display of 200 superbly presented vehicles. Young enthusiasts showed very clear preferences for their favourite makes and models, eagerly demonstrating their knowledge to anyone who would listen.

The competition was tight for trophies in close to 40 categories. Congratulations to the following top category winners: Top Car of Show – Mark 1967 VC Valiant Sedan, Entrants’ Choice – Steve 2002 Holden Statesman, People’s Choice – Ashleigh 1956 VW Beetle, Best Represented Club –

Combined Coastal Car Club Inc members were thrilled to continue the tradition of donating to local organisations from proceeds raised at the Cooroy Car Show. Tewantin/Cooroy SES and Black Mountain Rural Fire Brigade received donations to acknowledge their contribution to the show and their significant support to our community.

P&Cs at Cooroy State Primary School, Pomona State Primary School and Noosa District State High School received donations to help support children whose education is impacted by hardship during challenging times for local families.

Thank you to major sponsors Kuluin Mufflers, Concrete Pump Repair Australia, Shannon’s Insurance Wide Bay, Sutton’s Cleaning Service Qld, Daley’s Turf, and the amazing local businesses who support the show each year.

The Combined Coastal Car Club Inc marks 30 years in 2023. Members look forward to welcoming everyone at the Cooroy Car Show on Sunday 15 October 2023 as it celebrates this milestone.

More than 25 attended the afternoon event at the Cooroy RSL Club on Saturday 3 December, where the group was treated to a special afternoon tea and complimentary drinks.

Fellow veteran and local resident, retired Major General John Cantwell, said it was a very successful event.

“Membership Officer Greg Holmes from the RSL Sub Branch proposed this get-together for younger members. His idea was in response to the increasing age of many RSL members, to encourage veterans of conflicts since the Vietnam War to make greater use of the support and fellowship offered by the RSL.

“The function was a great success, with many of the younger veterans meeting each other for the first time.”

John said Cooroy Pomona RSL Sub Branch president Tricia Geelan, herself a younger veteran, spoke about the activities of the sub branch and how members can enjoy the RSL facilities with like-minded people. She also reminded the attendees of the emotional and practical support

“Our local RSL Sub Branch is very well known for its efforts to look after older veterans and service widows.

“But quite a few of the relatively younger members tend not to spend a lot of time at the RSL because they have other support networks, especially via social media. That’s fine, but nothing beats time spent face-to-face with someone who shares their experiences and challenges.

“This event was a great op-

portunity for them to connect directly with each other in a welcoming environment. I hope that a future event will

allow younger and older sub branch members to get to know each other better as well,” said John.

Memory support unit at Carramar opens

A NEW 32-bed memory support unit has officially opened at NoosaCare’s Carramar residence in Tewantin.

NoosaCare President Ann Harrap said the facility will provide more services and options for those living with dementia on the Sunshine Coast.

“With more and more people in our community impacted by dementia and cognitive decline, we are delighted to be able to provide a service that offers both a clinical and lifestyle approach to care in a safe and visually appealing space,” Ms Harrap said. The new unit – a spe-

Dr talks about medical cannabis

A THERAPEUTIC Goods Administration (TGA) Approved cannabinoid clinician and prescriber wants to educate and inform people about medicinal cannabis.

Dr Geoff Cutter established MMHS Medicinal Cannabis TeleClinic in early 2020 and will open a satellite clinic in Pomona in early 2023 to offer face-to-face consulting.

Dr Geoff said he can offer information about medical cannabis and that everyone should always discuss any

health issues with their GP and also see details on the TGA website.

“I am offering information only. Discuss it with your GP and if you want to know more then you can contact me.”

Dr Geoff said cannabis is a species of plant with many varieties.

“We believe it has been on this earth for at least 1.5 billion years.

“It is believed that hemp was the first cultivated plant

by mankind around 5,000 years ago. It was primarily used for its high fibre content in producing cloth and rope, and its seed and derived oil as a nutritious, high-protein foodstuff, as it is today.

“Two other varieties evolved to become predominant, Indica and Sativa, with different characteristics. Both contain a huge variety of chemicals with over 420 identified so far. The three main groups are

cifically designed secure environment in landscaped surroundings – increases NoosaCare’s secure dementia offering to 64 beds and is complemented by NoosaCare’s outreach activities such as the dementia café.

Extra services include solar outdoor audio and visual nature boards with information and sensory cues, outdoor safe-to-touch fireplace with seating, wearables and sensors that can assist with independence, interactive audio-visual systems to provide stimulation and sensory engagement and “silent sounds” wireless headphone systems.

Cannabidiol (CBD), Tetrahydro Cannabinol (THC) and Terpenes.

“Hemp contains less than 0.3 per cent tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) by law.”

Dr Geoff said in humans, the chemicals work synergistically, such that the sum is greater than the parts, something called the Entourage Effect.

“They exert their effects through the Endocannabinoid System (ECS). Every vertebrate has an ECS and cannabis-like substances are quite normally produced in their body.

“Providing dementia care is expensive and underfunded by the government so we rely heavily on volunteers and the generosity of donors to ensure we can deliver something extraordinary.

“NoosaCare is grateful to all those who helped to make this project a reality, particularly our major donors, RSL Tewantin, LiveLife Pharmacy Group and the families of John Hay and Stan Chandler.

“The financial gifts from those organisations and families have meant we can provide additional amenities and resident services over and above what we can

“In us, there are two called Anandamide and 2AG which regulate all the systems in our body to keep everything balanced and in harmony. We think that when this balance is disrupted in various ways, some medical conditions may be caused; there is no proof however.

“The ECS comprises chemical receptors to which our natural cannabinoids can bind to give effect.

CB1 receptors are found predominantly in the brain and central nervous system (CNS) and are mostly impacted by THC,whereas

fund ourselves,” she said. Designed by Peter Middap and constructed by Kane Builders, the project received endorsement from Dementia Australia and was recognised by the Institute of Hospitality in Healthcare as a state-of-the-art “Project of the Year” in 2021.

Mrs Harrap officially opened the new facility on December 5 with State Member of Parliament Sandy Bolton, Noosa’s Deputy Mayor Frank Wilkie and the project’s major donors.

Dr Geoff said cannabis for medicinal use only, was legalised in Australia in early 2016 and is classified as an unregistered drug because it hasn’t been through the required drug trials system yet.

Warm scones, warm hearts

THE Kindness Club joined Martin Duncan and his wonderful volunteers for a special project at Sconetime at the Cooroy Memorial Hall.

The children have been very touched by Martin’s kindness and strong sense of community.

They love how his wonderful events provide not only delicious scones, but most importantly, connection within the senior community.

The children made and

packaged 140 hanging clay hearts for all the lovely Sconetime guests as a gesture of kindness and community. Each and every heart was handmade with love.

The children have also prepared hampers for our wonderful local emergency services as a ‘thank you’ for working through the Christmas season to keep us all safe.

A big thank you to Yvonne

at Bidfood and to their suppliers: Steric, Nestle, Nu Pure and Priestley’s for providing all the drinks and treats.

The Kindness Club wish you all a wonderful Christmas full of love, happiness and kindness. See you in 2023 for more kind deeds and projects.

Students wow with art

Wishing

THE importance of art and community was highlighted at the opening of Noosa District State High School’s ‘ALT. kNOWledge’ exhibition at Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre last month.

The exhibition displayed dozens of art pieces by Noosa District SHS students, including realism, abstract and contemporary pieces.

Noosa District SHS art department said the exhibition provided a perfect platform for students to show weeks of hard work and their personal connections and realisations.

“For some students, it was

their first time having their art framed and displayed in a gallery.”

Year 8 student Sage Morris said she was beyond thrilled to have her work displayed.

“After completing multiple artworks, it is uplifting to see them on display,” Ms Morris said.

The exhibition opening was also a chance for the local community to meet Noosa District SHS’s new Head of Campus, Oliver Colmer.

Mr Colmer said art is a fantastic vessel for young people to express feelings.

“I was delighted to open

the Junior Arts show at the Butter Factory Arts Centre.

I was impressed by the fantastic artworks, which showed considerable dedication, skill, thoughtfulness, and creativity.

“This student excellence is founded on the hard work and support by their teachers and parents.

“I would also like to celebrate the Butter Factory Arts Centre for hosting and for the considerable time taken in hanging and displaying the art pieces.

“Moreover, I would like to acknowledge Mr Ranclaud for making this special event happen,” Mr Colmer said.

WITH their first and very successful year under their belt, Sandy Roulston and Kate Mayne are proud to announce the opening of their new office in the Vibe Store Complex at 9A Factory Street, Pomona.

Sandy and Kate said they are delighted with the results

of the beautiful and renovated office that offers excellent marketing exposure for their clientele.

This year, the dynamic duo have achieved a 100 per cent auction success rate and have been recognised for delivering prices over and above their clients’

expectations.

“The exceptional service isn’t going unnoticed – with rave reviews from past sellers and buyers alike, it’s no wonder our referral rate is so high.

“Selling is in our DNA with Kate yielding from a real estate family, and Sandy

an avid property investor.

Combined we offer 38 years of real estate experience in selling residential property, off-the-plan, vacant land and rural properties, right through to farms,” they said. What’s their point of difference?

Monthly market wrap up

AS we come to the close of another year it’s a great time to look back on the year that was and look forward to the possibilities of the year ahead.

Recently realestate. com.au highlighted their 12.5 million visitors per month over summer 21/22 demonstrated a 68 per cent increase in enquiries from the previous summer period and this is expected to increase again this year.

Positioned on a generous 700 m2 corner block, with a fully fenced rear yard and sparkling pool, this modern home presents easy living, minutes from shops, cafes,

It is clear buyers don’t take summer off as this is the peak season for searches throughout the year. Compound these results with other portals like Domain, our highly engaged Wythes audience, social and print campaigns, and there is no better time to be on the market than through summer.

Anecdotally, we have 20,000 active buyers on our database, with strong numbers also visiting our Cooroy and Doonan offices daily to enquire about new

properties. The end of year is a deadline for many to take action, while others are setting new-year property goals. If you’re thinking about selling, now is the perfect time to take action and have a chat with us to achieve the best outcome. Our office has experienced 45 per cent growth in average sale price since the beginning of the year. We have also seen average days on market increase by 68 per cent from 53 in January to 89 now – highlighting the

importance of a strategic sales campaign with an experienced agent. In a year filled with uncertainty stemming from inflation, interest rates, instability overseas, an election, sensationalised media headlines around property forecasts, and a world starting to live with Covid, we are proud of our entire team for being the stability and informed positivity our clients needed. Their dedication to delivering exceptional service and results to our sales and

property management clients this year represents everything we stand for.

We would like to wish our clients, family, friends and team a wonderful festive season and all the very best for a healthy and prosperous new year. Our team are here for all your property needs over the Christmas period.

Please contact your preferred agent directly, text our emergency property management number, or visit wythes.com.au for all other enquiries.

THE opportunity exists to acquire this iconic Mary Valley business, well-established in the village of Imbil.

IMBIL Colonial Butchery, an iconic business in the Mary Valley, is now offered for sale (business only).

The butchery is one of Imbil’s, and indeed the Mary Valley’s, longest established businesses, operating continuously for over 100 years, over 17 years by the current owner. It services not only Imbil and surrounds but all Mary Valley villages including Amamoor, Kandanga and Kenilworth and their rural surrounds.

The air-conditioned shop is well-equipped, with everything that you need to operate successfully, including not one, but two cool rooms, plus freezers, counter, display cabinets and scales, slicers, saws, mincer and smoker, work benches, shelving, racks and more.

The business is offered for sale on a WIWO basis, plus stock on hand at valuation.

It’s time for Clint to pass the baton and have a well-de-

served rest.

The business is located on the corner of Yabba Road and Diggings Road, a landmark location in Imbil’s CBD. Imbil is set on the banks of Yabba Creek and the edge of the state forest. It’s the gateway to Borumba Dam. The village is less than half an hour from Gympie, 45 minutes from the coast at Noosa and just 10 minutes from the new freeway, on your way anywhere.

An important checklist when buying a business: Reputation – the current owner has an impeccable reputation and can pass over an extensive client base.

Established – while the business has operated in its current location for almost 10 years, the current owner has operated in the Mary Valley for around 15 years.

Premises – the ex-church building is a landmark in Imbil. The premises were totally renovated by the current business owner to the highest standard and, apart

from the church-like look, has polished timber floors and a chandelier.

Lease – a long lease will be negotiated with the successful purchaser.

Equipment – there are four fully equipped stations, including a barber’s chair, two shampoo chairs and two private beauty therapy rooms.

Facilities – apart from the hairdressing salon and beauty therapy rooms, the premises include an office, stockroom, colour station plus kitchen and toilet facilities.

Financials – financial information will be made available to interested buyers after initial discussion

and/or inspection.

Location – the business is sited on a service road near Yabba Creek, on the edge of the CBD.

The location is a short stroll from other Imbil businesses and offers good parking, including off-street disabled parking.

Imbil is set on the banks of Yabba Creek and the edge of Imbil State Forest. It’s the gateway to Borumba Dam.

The village is less than half an hour from Gympie and about 15 minutes from the new freeway, on your way anywhere.

Having your own business in the Mary Valley – it’s a lifestyle choice.

RJR Property

ANYTIME IS THE RIGHT TIME!

As real estate agents, we are often asked these questions:

Q: When is the right time to sell?

A: When you’re ready, there is no right or wrong time! The right time is the time that suits you. Making the decision to sell is the hard bit. Selling is easy, just leave it to the RJR team.

Q: Do you buy first and then sell, or sell first and then buy?

A: The best method is to do both, at the same time. Otherwise, you can get caught out. You will find the perfect new home and need to sell quickly, or you sell and have nowhere to go.

Q: What is the state of the current real estate market?

A: While this is a great market, it won’t get any better in the short or medium term! However, as most people are buying & selling in the same market, the changeover remains relatively constant.

Christmas time is a decision time for most people. It’s when we get organized and make plans for the next year, or two! If a property sale is on your mind, talk to one of the sales agents from RJR Property before the break. They will discuss the current market and where your property sits in that market. They will give you the information that you need to make those decisions.

On behalf of the team at RJR Property, I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a safe, prosperous & Happy New Year. We look forward to seeing you all in 2023.
