Multi Award Winning

A MAN is seeking information on his parents who lived in Cooroy in the 1930s.

Michael West said his parents, Mavis and Harold West, lived in Cooroy for a year in the mid-1930s but that’s all he and his siblings know.

“Mum always said that she and Dad lived in Cooroy for a short while during the Depression years.

“We don’t know how or why they ended up in Cooroy, so it’s always been a bit of a mystery to us. Perhaps they had relatives or friends there or Dad was just looking for work wherever he could get it, which was normal during the Depression years.

“But we do know that Mum made ice cream and Dad sold it while they were in Cooroy. We assume Dad sold the ice cream door to door but we don’t really know.”

Michael said he does know his parents were both living in Gin Gin (west of Bundaberg) prior to moving to Cooroy, and moved back to Gin Gin after Cooroy.

“To add to the confusion, Mum and Dad were married in Bundaberg in March 1936. I have their certificate of marriage.

“My sister Loretta was also born in 1936 and believes that she was also in Cooroy as a baby.”

Micheal said they have no record of a Cooroy address and unfortunately didn’t ask enough questions before Mavis and Harold both passed away.

“There’s nothing important here but it’s just one minor piece of our family jigsaw that we are curious about.”

Do you remember a couple selling ice cream in Cooroy in the 1930s or know someone who does?
