Forest haven win for koalas BY ALEX PURCELL IN a win for koalas and a win for the community, Pomona’s Yurol Forest is confirmed as a dedicated koala habitat. After months of negotiations, the contracts are “all but signed” on a project to restore land that was previously cleared for soft pine and hardwood timber plantations. The award-winning project will re-establish more than 1000 hectares of ex-plantation areas in Yurol and Ringtail State Forests as a biodiverse forest to create a protected koala habitat. Noosa Landcare General Manager Phil Moran said Noosa Landcare is extremely excited about this project. “It has been some time in gestation and involves a whole lot of partners.” For the past 30 to 50 years, Yurol and Ringtail State Forests have historically been used for timber plantations. In 2016, through the initiative of Noosa Parks Association, discussions started with Noosa Council, Queensland Department of Environment and Science [DES] and Hancock Plantations Queensland to buy out the harvest lease. “It’s all thanks to the foresight of former Noosa Parks Association’s Michael Gloster, former Noosa

Council CEO, Brett de Chastel, and the Department of Environment and Science, that we have this land to restore for future generations. “All three came together to pay one third each, to buy Hancock’s plantation lease.” In 2019, $3.6 million was paid to buy out the Hancock lease for the 2400 hectares of land that will eventually be converted to National Park tenure. “Noosa Council ratepayers paid just $1.2 million. Securing that much land for the price of a house is pretty amazing. "It's an incredible value for money and a wonderful investment for our children's future.” Work on restoring the land will begin in February 2022. Noosa Landcare has partnered with Greenfleet, a leading not-forprofit environmental organisation, which will fund the restoration through voluntary carbon contributions from individuals and companies around Australia. "We are proud to partner with Greenfleet who has, as part of the first step in this project, negotiated a landmark agreement with the Kabi Kabi People’s Aboriginal Corporation."

WHILE the Cooroy Rag has always been an integral part of our community, in the past 18 months it has undeniably become more (see story page 3). Community ownership of businesses in small towns has been lost over the past 50 years. Our community is unique in its ownership of the Cooroy Rag. We should all stand proud in the knowledge that as a community, we have our own newspaper to hand down to future generations. The team at Cooroy Rag (pictured below at Christmas in Cooroy celebrations) is very proud of what we do and keenly anticipate more wonderful years ahead. From us all at the Cooroy Rag, we would like to thank everyone in our amazing community for this unwavering support. This especially includes the local businesses that advertise in the paper, our readers, our committee, our volunteers and our contributors. The Cooroy Rag wouldn’t be the Cooroy Rag without you all. Merry Christmas everyone and here’s to 2022!

Together we're making history! WHAT an incredible 18 months for the Cooroy Rag. Since your community newspaper was restarted in August 2020, the Cooroy Rag has celebrated a major milestone, given money back to the community, been nominated for an award and broken major stories. In April this year, the Cooroy Rag celebrated 60 years of publishing history. What began as a way to advertise businesses in Cooroy, quickly grew into a noticeboard for events and announcements. For more than half a century, the paper has been a staple in the Cooroy community and continues today to reflect its views, champion its causes, celebrate its people and sustain its way of life. To celebrate this milestone, the Cooroy Rag organised a front page photo that literally stopped traffic. More than 100 past and present advertisers, locals, councillors as well as state and federal members joined the Cooroy Rag team in Maple Street for a photo that clearly reflects the unwavering support of our local business community for 60 years. Less than a year after the rebirth of the paper, the Cooroy Rag gave $15,000 cash back to the community at a wonderful community celebration. Believed to be the only newspa-

per in Australia to invest profits generated from local advertisers back into the community, more than 20 local groups joined 110 local businesses and Cooroy Rag advertisers as a range of cash grants from $250 to $1000 were handed out to the successful applicants. Since becoming a 100 percent community-owned newspaper in 2000, more than $1m has been given back into the community. The Cooroy Rag was acknowledged for this huge achievement, through a nomination for a prestigious award. The QCF Philanthropy Awards recognise those contributing at the highest level of philanthropic endeavour in Queensland, and the Cooroy Rag was shortlisted for a philanthropy award in the small-to-medium enterprise category. In the past year and a half, the Cooroy Rag has continuously striven to deliver news you can trust and content that informs and promotes our community. We have broken stories that were previously untold, becoming a source for news that locals can’t get anywhere else. From exclusives on the Wimmers Shop & Save Supermarket, to the Diamond Street development, to introducing the new owners of Harvest Fresh Cooroy, to providing the latest updates on the

Along with celebrating 60 years of publishing this year, the Cooroy Rag continues to champion the views of the community.

GemLife legal fight, breaking news on Woolworths purchase of land in Cooroy and the talks on Mount Cooroora, the Cooroy Rag is the first to provide the community with the news it needs to know. In August 2021, with the help of three local stalwarts, the Cooroy Rag "lifted the lid" on a decades-old Cooroy mystery, confirming that the concrete tank in Apex Park does not contain sewage but rather water, which once supplied the old Butter Factory.

Since breaking this story, Noosa Council officers have been investigating and assessing its heritage significance, while locals buzz with suggestions about what could be done with it, offering ideas ranging from creating a tourist attraction to a water feature. The community has embraced the Cooroy Rag’s call for a memorial at the site of a tragedy that claimed four local lives. In October, the Cooroy Rag retold the heartbreaking story

of Derek Lange, 11, his mother June, 30, Shayne Parker, 9, and Ricky von Blanckensee, 18, who were all killed in a tragic accident at Cooroy Creek on Saturday 5 December 1981. With the support of the families of Derek, June, Shayne and Ricky, the Cooroy Rag submitted an application to Noosa Council, requesting approval for a memorial at the site of the tragedy. This application is still to be reviewed by Council officers.

Yurol Forest confirmed as koala haven From page 1 “Under the Indigenous Land Use Agreement (ILUA), we will work closely with local First Nations peoples, hosting two Kabi Kabi specified Cert III trainees per year who are studying conservation and land management, to assist our crews in the restoration work.” The first step in this restoration project is weeding the cleared land before replanting trees such as the Queensland Blue Gum, which are specific for koalas. There are more koalas in Yurol Forest than we first

thought, and over a period of time, once that forest gets returned to a relatively healthy state, we should see the population of koalas growing.” Using a drone with the ability to survey the forest and koala populations, Noosa Landcare, with Queensland University of Technology, will continue to monitor koala numbers into the future. Phil said this project also has the potential for other social and cultural benefits. “Being a blank canvas, there is so much we can do. The restoration could provide an extension of the Noosa Trails Network,

Court rules quarry trucks to continue Honour Judge Long SC. “It’s extremely tough for the community and Council to hear the judgment, but we must accept the umpire’s decision,” Mayor Stewart said. “But it should be noted that this is not the final step in Council’s enforcement action and we will continue to stand with the community,” she said.

Council will now progress its application to the Planning and Environment Court, seeking full enforcement orders that are centred on alleged breaches by the Quarry operator and thereby seek to address the intensification of use issues. Acting CEO Larry Sengstock said that Council remained committed to the court action.

“Final enforcement orders will be sought requiring the operators to limit the number of quarry trucks per day, avoid convoying and ensure movements are within the operating hours, with all truck loads covered,” Mr Sengstock said. The final hearing will take place over three days between 2 and 4 March, 2022.

HAVE your say and be heard in the Noosa MP Community Survey 2021. State MP Sandy Bolton said that your "say" was vital to determine the priorities for our electorate for the coming year, as well as thoughts on broader issues impacting Queensland. “In addition to the range of issues we are currently progressing, we would appreciate your feedback on predominant areas of concern brought to us by residents throughout the year.” The Annual Noosa Community Survey aims to guide priority areas in 2022 and is for residents of the Noosa Electorate only. Visit: www.sandybolton. com/your-say-annual-survey or alternatively, hard copies can be obtained by calling Ms Bolton's office on 5319 3100. “Thank you in advance for being involved, which does make a difference for our community,” Ms Bolton said.

Dad loses long locks AFTER 10 years of no haircuts, a local dad has had one of the greatest proportions. Scottie Simpson has said goodbye to the long curls that he has been growing for more than a decade, by shaving his head to raise money for charity. Scottie said that he loved his long hair but not as much as helping people diagnosed with cancer. “My long hair is part of my character and I love head-banging to my rock/ metal music, so this is a big deal for me. "But none of that compares to helping people who have been dealt the news that they have blood cancer. “Forty-seven Australians of any age are diagnosed with blood cancer each day. "This donation will help with accommodation or bills for the families who have moved closer to hospitals or care for treatment that can last months or years. "It is for people trying to adjust their lives after such news.” Scottie underwent the chop at Loco Barber Co. in Gympie for a very special person.

The Christmas Convoy has been a great success this year.

Christmas convoy delights all ages on goodwill drive NOOSA Council’s Connecting Noosa Christmas Convoy has finished spreading cheer for another year. Over four afternoons, a convoy of emergency service vehicles, Council’s local laws vehicles and a special truck carrying Santa, weaved its way through the streets of Noosa and the Hinterland. Starting in Boreen Point and Cooroibah, the convoy moved to Kin Kin, Cooran, Pomona and Cooroy, then traveled through parts of Tewantin to Peregian, Castaways and Sunrise Beaches. Community Development Manager, Alison Hamblin, said that the convoy is all about spreading the festive fun. “But it is also an opportunity to thank our emergency services, who do a tremendous job throughout the year.”

Noosa Police Acting Inspector, Ben Carroll, said that it’s such a thrill for emergency services. “It’s a wonderful way to celebrate Christmas with the community,” he said. The convoy also made special stops at a number of aged care facilities, with these stops all well received. Councillor Karen Finzel said that the response in the Hinterland “was fantastic”. “It was such a highlight for many involved in the convoy,” she said. The Mayor and Councillors were thrilled to once again be a part of this year’s Connecting Noosa Christmas Convoy. “It’s such an uplifting event for our community,” Noosa Mayor Clare Stewart said. The event is funded by Noosa Council with the corporate support of HOT91 and the Madill Motor Group.

Teacher's work to feature at summit A COOROY State School teacher has received recognition for his work at one of the highest levels. Teacher, adjunct lecturer at CQUniversity, author, international and national conference speaker, neuroscientist Dr Ragnar Purje PhD has been invited to present the applied principles and practices of his book, Responsibility Theory, at the National Education Summit, in Brisbane in 2022. Ragnar said Responsibility Theory was a successful brain-based immersive systematic self-talk sequence learning neuro-education program. “The purpose of Responsibility Theory is to empower teachers and inspire and transform students in an explicit and sequential manner, in terms of sequence learning. “In terms of its application, Responsibility Theory presents 10 powerful precepts, which provide teachers, educators, and parents with additional linguistic focussed pedagogical and social tools, that fit in with any teaching style, any classroom behaviour management program, and all school rules. “The Responsibility Theory program also fits with all parental home rules.” Ragnar said that once teachers were informed

constructively advance their well-being, their social skills and academic potential, not only for today, but forever.” In addition to being a teacher at Cooroy State School, Ragnar is an Adjunct Lecturer in the School of Education and the Arts, at Central Queensland University, and a published author with education articles published in noted education journals He is also a traditional Goju Karate martial arts master practitioner.

Felicia Broadhurst blows out the birthday candles, and below, celebrating with family and friends.

Stylish celebration marks a 100-year milestone WHEN Felicia Broadhurst celebrated her 100th birthday last month with family and friends, she was the last to go home at midnight. The vivacious centenarian marked this incredible milestone with 100 guests, including her youngest sister, Delphine Jesberg, aged 91, in Tewantin, at an afternoon event that stretched long into the evening. “‘Bid’ or ‘Biddy Beal’, as she is known to close friends and family, was the last to go home after spending a relaxing evening with family, reminiscing about days gone by and just having a laugh,” Felicia’s son, Rob’s partner, Judy McCarthy said. “It was an enjoyable afternoon. The Black Forest cake was homemade by Delphine’s son in-law, André Stössel, and on Friday, which was Felicia’s birthday. "We had a lovely visit from State MP Sandy Bolton, who wished Felicia a happy 100th birthday. "She hoped that she can come again next year for

her 101st.” Born on 26 November 1921 in Brisbane, from an early age Felicia grew up in Traveston. She worked as a nanny for a farming family from the age of 13, after her mother died leaving five children for her father to raise. At 17, Felicia went to work at the Cooroy Hotel in the dining room and also helping to make beds when required. It was at the Cooroy Hotel that she met the man of her dreams - a true gentleman, George Beal, a local butcher. After their wedding in 1941,

the couple rented a small house in Tewantin, where the car park for the Atrium is now. While living there, they purchased a half acre block of land near the Tewantin Primary School, where they built a small two bedroom Queenslander in November 1949. In January 1950, Felicia gave birth to Robert in Cooroy Hospital. Although they only had one child of their own, Felicia and George helped out her sisters and their children with accommodation and meals. Their house was always full.

LOCAL auction house, Hinter Auctions, has had to move into bigger and better premises as a result of demand. In the 18 months since first opening in Diamond Street, Cooroy, Hinter Auctions has been featured on national television, is attracting buyers from all around Australia and overseas, and has vendors who travel to Cooroy with their goods from all over southeast Queensland. Auctioneer Richard Hansen said that when they opened their doors, he wondered if they would receive enough items to hold a viable auction. “That concern was quickly quashed when, by the third auction, we were having to restrict lot numbers for vendors and more recently, limit intake days from being held over two weekends to just two days.” Floor manager and business partner, Andy Flitter, said that it became apparent very early on that they had outgrown their space. “The property at 13 Jarrah Street came up for lease and it seemed to suit our needs.

"Having the new space will mean that we are able to have a room set up for auction, and have separate space available for intake, with this complete with a purpose-built photography booth. "The move will also enable more auctions, including some specialised timed sales, along with some added services such as in-house packing and postage for distant bidders. “We are looking to a packed 2022, with several in-house and on-site estate auctions planned for this year,” Richard said. Meanwhile, The Shed Cooroy, which shared space with Hinter Auctions in Diamond Street, has also moved. The antique and collectibles store has relocated to Maple Lane, Cooroy, and officially opened last week. Hinter Auctions will move into its new space in mid-January, with the first in-house live/simulcast auction planned for February 6, 2022. Keep up to date with the auctions at hinterauctions.com.au

Trio’s amazing collection set to inspire NEXT year at The Art Hub Cooroy, resident artists Ross Smith, Marie Smith and Kerry Keyte are exhibiting their unique art. Ross Smith’s creations are based on spoon carving techniques and finishes. He has a current fascination with carving wooden birds, using a variety of woods, which are mainly local. Camphor Laurel timber finishes well in many applications to create a striking appearance and Gympie Red Cedar presents with interesting grain and texture. Often the grain and sometimes blemishes enhance the decorative flow to add quite a dramatic effect to the carved bird. In addition to different displays, Ross uses a variety of finishes so that some items are suitable for outdoor and undercover displays, while others are only suitable for indoor displays. Marie Smith’s work is an expression of both colour and texture and is a great escape from the world of letters and lines, which were hallmarks of her distant career as a screen printer and sign writer. Predominantly, she draws inspiration from the great outdoors and the many places that she visited in Australia and overseas. There are just unlimited opportunities in the vast landscapes,

WHAT: Art exhibition WHEN: Tuesday 4 January to Tuesday 22 February WHERE: The Art Hub Cooroy at 3/2 Emerald Street vivid colours, interesting movements, small and intricate flowers, birds and people that she can capture on her phone camera. All are very inspiring and thought provoking, all enabling Marie to create her amazing works of art. Working in mixed media gives Kerry Keyte the ability to adapt and change her artwork, which

is inspired by the light and ocean lifestyle on the Sunshine Coast. Her art has a reflective quality, as she uses light to bring up the colour and intensity of her artwork. She mainly works with resin mosaic, wood and fused glass, upcycling her objects into works of art. Kerry recently exhibited at The Art Hub Cooroy, and this time is exhibiting her line of beautiful jewellery. Meet the artists on Friday, 7 January, from 4 to 6pm at The Art Hub Cooroy.

Artists Ross Smith, Marie Smith and Kerry Keyte are getting ready for a new exhibition at the Art Hub early in the New Year.

BLESSINGS FOR A HAPPY CHRISTMAS WHAT IS CHRISTMAS? What is it all about? The answer is found in the Bible, the Word of God. There you will learn the meaning of the greatest event of all time: the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ into this world to be a Saviour. Angels announced the manner of His birth to Mary. “You will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus.” Luke 1 V 31 (Good News Bible). More than 700 years before this unique person came into the world, Isaiah the prophet prophesied in Isaiah 7 v 14: “A young woman who is pregnant will have a son and will name him ‘Immanuel’.” (God with us). It is important at Christmas time to understand why He came. The answer is found again in the Bible. “... the Father sent His Son to be the Saviour of the world.” (1 John 4 v 14)

YOUR time starts now! The pressure was on as three teams scoured the beds for just the right ingredients. Permaculture Noosa President, Tom Wegener, went straight for the arrowroot, sliced it thinly and put it into hot oil to make chips. Simple but delicious. Johanna and Chris went for cherry tomatoes, mint and snake beans, to add to lentils, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, salt and pepper in order to make micro salads on garden nasturtium leaves. These were artistic, delicately layered tapas with a moreish, wholesome flavor. Katie and Matt, the chief community gardeners, had their foraging mapped out and quickly harvested the garlic, chives, parsley, sweet basil, cherry tomatoes, tarragon and parsley seeds to add to chickpeas, tahini and lemon juice and make a mouth-watering hummus. Many other dishes were provided by the members, based on produce from their own gardens. It was a cornucopia, reminiscent of the American original, Thanksgiving. In the end, Matt and Katie took the honours and a $20 gift voucher from Cooroy Harvest Fresh. The Permaculture Noosa team has decided that this

Clothes, toys to help families in need COOROY’S Uniform 4 Kids have packed up 75 bags of items made from used Queensland Police, Federal Police, Border Force, fire fighters, ambulance and Australia Zoo uniforms for families in need this Christmas. Spokesperson Yvonne Pattinson said that these bags were filled with boys’ and girls’ clothing, toys, books, toiletries and much more. “Over 1000 items of clothing made by the ladies from the Cooroy group and the Palm Lake Cooroy group were used. My thanks go to these marvellous women, to the Uniting Church for its assistance, to the residents of Palm Lake, to our sponsors and to Boom Shankar, who made it all possible with their donations.” Yvonne said that they could do with some more help though. These uniforms are re-purposed by us and returned to the agency providing the uniforms. They then give them to children and families in need. This serves many purposes, including bridging the gap and saving landfill. “This charity started in Cooroy and has spread throughout the eastern

It’s ‘mow worries’ as businesses pitch in for assistance dogs IT was a case of man’s best friend helping man’s best friend, when Rover Mowers and the team at Mower & ATV Solutions in Cooroy, came to the rescue of a local charity. These two businesses subsidised the purchase of a zero-turn, ride-on-mower for PTSD Dogs’ new home in the Noosa Hinterland. The charity, which rescues dogs that in turn rescue Veterans and First Responders with PTSD, recently moved onto the twoacre hinterland property, but desperately needed a mower to keep the property well maintained and their precious pooches safe from ticks and snakes. CEO Angie Weeks said that she was delighted when Rover Mowers and Dave from Mower & ATV Solutions were able to assist. “Dave and his team have been absolutely wonderful. We are incredibly grateful We are a community choir that sings beautiful, joyful songs in a relaxed atmosphere. We meet Tuesdays from 4pm till 5.30pm at the CWA hall in Eumundi. to them and to Rover for their support”. Mower & ATV Solutions Owner, Dave Mancktelow, said that they are happy to support this organisation. “We really respect what our Veterans and First Responders do. “Quite a few veterans retire out here to the Hinterland to enjoy the peaceful existence, and this is our way of giving a little bit back to them and saying thanks to them for their service.” PTSD Dogs Australia, a charity based near Cooroy, rescues dogs from shelters and pounds, trains them to become highly skilled Assistance Dogs, and then places the dogs, at no cost, with Veterans and First Responders suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder as a result of their service. Hundreds of people enjoyed the annual Pomona in the Park concert at Stan Topper Park.

A foot-tapping success POMONA State School’s annual ‘Pomona in the Park’ went off without a drop of rain. After wet weather forced the November event to reschedule to early December, hundreds of parents, students and the locals packed Stan Topper Park to watch this end of year concert under a starry sky. Every class showcased their talents and skills with choreographed dances in fabulous costumes, while Pomona State School’s school band, choir, and winners of Pomona’s Got Talent also performed. Pomona State School principal Alyson

Covey said that it was a truly magical evening. “Everyone, from students to staff, put in a huge amount of effort as ‘Pomona in the Park’ generates an enormous amount of pride within our school and the local population at large,|” she said. “The entire evening demonstrates our school’s commitment to providing our students with a wealth of musical and arts-related opportunities. “We were so pleased that the weather held out and we could hold this year’s concert in Stan Topper Park.”

YOUR ITY N U M M O C PER NEWSPA CHRISTMAS is a time of peace and goodwill, and this year, these values take on even more importance as we face the prospect of COVID-19 restrictions continuing to affect our community. Vaccination is the most important protection measure that we have against the health, social and economic implications of further COVID-19 outbreaks. But we also must respect every person’s choice. Looking back, it was two years ago that the devastating bushfires hit Noosa, and the recovery effort is still ongoing. The Australian Government continues to support the environmental recovery by committing $165,768 to Noosa & District Landcare Group for a range of projects throughout Noosa to assist with the revegetation of natural habitats and eradication of weeds to protect and conserve local flora and fauna. Why is it important to replace a missing tooth? The space created when a tooth has been extracted DOES NOT remain constant. This is because the action of swallowing (we do this on average 600 to 800 times per day), causes us to swallow 1 to 2 litres of saliva daily. The oral phase of swallowing occurs in your mouth and uses the jaw, lips, tongue, teeth, cheeks, and palate (roof of the mouth). The action and pressure from the tongue and cheeks can move the remaining teeth either side of the extracted tooth towards this gap. And, when these teeth move position, the opposing teeth on the opposite jaw that mesh also move position. The result is a roller-coaster situation of upper to lower teeth. The average adult has 32 teeth – a combination of molars (back) and anterior (front) teeth.

Buying locally makes a big difference to our community.

way that we can support local businesses now, is by shopping locally this festive season. Whether it’s loading up your Christmas table with locally-grown produce and fresh seafood caught just off the Coast, a last-minute present from the boutique down the street, or picking up a gift voucher for dinner at a nearby restaurant, buying locally is a great

way of giving back to our community. When you support local small businesses and Aussie producers, it makes a big difference to our local economy. Buying local goods and services is the best prescription for a healthy Wide Bay economy. Best wishes for a happy Christmas and safe and prosperous New Year.

There is more than one option for replacing missing teeth depending on your specific situation.

Some reasons that missing teeth need to be replaced: Speech: A missing tooth can negatively affect the way you speak, depending on where in the mouth it is. Bite changes: The loss of one or more teeth can cause the re-distribution of your bite pressure on the other teeth. Over time this can cause the remaining teeth to shift position and move into the space of the extracted tooth. Aesthetics: A missing tooth leaves a visible gap between the remaining teeth and can be a source of embarrassment. You may not feel comfortable smiling and laughing. Patients with teeth missing often come to John Taylor. Sometimes the teeth have recently been extracted, while some have been missing for years. After an assessment a solution is always found. Remember: it is not only the front (anterior) teeth that your friends see when you smile – it is the first molars as well.

TO say this is an incredible community is an understatement. At the time of writing, thousands of Noosa residents have joined together, regardless of vaccination status, opposing mandates that segregate, and thereby impact our workers and small businesses. The clear message is one of unity, compassion and inclusion. As I relayed in a Parliamentary speech, never did it say in any roadmap that, as international and domestic borders opened and we hit vaccination targets, we would lock out loved ones from cafes and libraries or access to health professionals. From our inboxes or on the streets, this does not pass the “pub test” in any form. Nor does the divisive labelling of vaxxer/anti vaxxer that is used by governments and media. “Naturally Noosa” was part of a tourism campaign many years ago, espousing more than just our environmental attributes. As well our many wellness retreats, our community is filled with those whose commitment to physical wellbeing through utilising natural therapies is renowned. Vaccinations do not always form part of their beliefs nor those of some religions. Highly respected and educated practitioners such as chiropractors, holistic dentists, midwives, physiotherapists, psychologists, naturopaths and many others are included in new vaccine mandates. These professionals, as well their staff and thousands of patients (many who work in other industries that have come under new mandates), focus on prevention through education, nutrition, alignment and natural therapies rather than medication and hospitalization. As they have done through this pandemic, they do not

gift ideas in

reject, but rather mitigate risk. They are now not allowed to practice because of their beliefs which extend to avoiding preservatives, sugars, processed foods and chemical-based products. Nor are they offered options so they can continue to care for their patients. Governments have struggled for years to fund sufficient health facilities and services to accommodate increased demand including as a result of our poor lifestyle choices that lead to diminished immune systems, preventable chronic illnesses and death. Our ongoing extended surgery waitlists and shortages of mental health professionals demonstrate already overloaded systems which will be put under even more duress once COVID comes to our region. Given this, one would think that there would be understanding for those working to decrease our reliance upon interventions, medications and hospitalisations, and to allow them to continue their COVID risk management strategies, as they have this whole pandemic. We will need “all hands-on deck” in the coming months. Instead, mandates are ostracizing these Queenslanders, reducing the number of health practitioners available to us. These practitioners, and the research being done, are vital components alongside vaccinations in a world that will continue to face pandemics and mutating viruses. At the Australian Institute of Tropical Diseases and Medicines, healing through nature utilising indigenous knowledge is a focus. Millions of dollars are also being spent at the Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research developing a treatment to get our immune systems fitter to deal with viruses and other diseases. Hmmmm…isn’t that what

our wellness sector focuses on? Who knows, the advances being made by these medical institutes may lead to a position where vaccines are no longer needed! However, right now, we do need these, especially for those like myself who have not been kind to our bodies, and need as much protection as possible! Our gratitude must be extended to all who work in this space, and to our community standing shoulder to shoulder with them as we navigate the next phase of our COVID journey. The greatest Christmas gift is one where communities unite in sensibility, not extremism. Please remember to be ready in all ways for the holidays! Whether it be for COVID outbreaks, which are all but guaranteed, flood, fire or storm, be prepared. This includes vaccinations or boosters to avoid lengthy queues or supply issues. Milestone for long-awaited bypass WITH major construction of Stage 1 of the Tewantin Bypass set to start in the coming weeks, it was great to be able to recently turn the first sod at the intersection of Cooroy-Noosa Road and Beckmans Road. The Tewantin Bypass is the long-awaited final link in upgrading our arterial road network, with this intersection being the first location for the planned full bypass. This upgraded Cooroy-Noosa Road and Beckmans Road intersection will include a new two-lane roundabout, on-road bike lanes, and pedestrian refuges. The upgrade will improve safety and reduce congestion, with improved traffic flows particularly during peak periods. Council is proudly delivering this project through a funding agreement with the Department of Transport and Main Roads.

statement, but the fight is not over. Although our application for interim enforcement orders was unsuccessful (these orders sought to stop quarry truck movements during school bus hours on the Pomona Kin Kin Road) we will, and are, progressing our application to the Planning and Environment Court, seeking final enforcement orders. These orders centre around alleged breaches by the Quarry operator, and seek to address the issues related to intensification of use. We said we would stand with the community on this issue and that is what we are doing. We’ll be seeking orders that the operators of the quarry limit the number of quarry trucks per day, avoid convoying and ensure movements are within the operating hours, with all truck loads covered. The final hearing will take place over three days from 2-4 March 2022.

Hinterland playground Speaking of Infrastructure, unfortunately we have had to revise the construction schedule for the Hinterland Playground. This will see the unique, nature-based, all-abilities playground open to the public in March 2022 rather than December this year. Unfortunately, this delay can’t be helped, as Noosa, like many other councils across Qld, has experienced significant delays in supply due to interstate Covid lockdowns. We have strived to employ our local tradies, but demand is high, and we haven’t had access to enough highly skilled contractors for the associated bespoke carpentry work. Work however continues. The water-play feature, internal pathways and bridges are almost complete, the amenities block construction is complete and Council has completed 34 new car parks, 22 overflow car parks, a new raised pedestrian crossing, additional disabled car parks as well as pathways to provide connectivity to the playground and to town. Kin Kin Quarry To say we are disappointed with the decision of the Planning and Environment Court regarding the Kin Kin Quarry is an under-

Christmas is racing into town CHRISTMAS is just around the corner and Cooroy is gearing up for the festive season and its biggest celebration of the year. Christmas in Cooroy is happening

on 10 December and this year's event is set to be a cracker, bringing back some old favourites like the Bentley’s Great Santa Race. Read the full story on page 5. Photo: Leo Wiles

GemLife sets up legal team BY ALEX PURCELL

GEMLIFE has engaged a legal team in their fight to appeal Noosa Council’s decision to reject the proposed development of an over 50s lifestyle resort in Cooroy. In an update on the GemLife proposal, presented to Cooroy Golf Club members at their recent AGM, the Cooroy Golf Club Committee was advised that GemLife had “engaged a legal and

expert team to pursue the Planning & Environment Court’s approval of the proposal”. The Cooroy Golf Club Committee has been advised by GemLife that the appeal process is a “hearing anew, meaning the Court effectively reassesses the development application afresh” and the decision to appeal Council’s decision involves “substantial additional financial commitment

by GemLife to achieve an approval”. As part of the process, Cooroy Golf Club members can expect to see a number of experts onsite carrying out additional field and investigative work related to the additional assessments of ecology, waterways, traffic, engineering and water quality, which GemLife has advised “is quite common for a court appeal of this type”.

The Committee said it had been advised that a final decision from the Court was not expected until at least the middle of next year but that GemLife was “fully committed to this project and associated improvements to the Cooroy Golf Club, which in broad terms includes course improvements, new clubhouse and buggy shed, guaranteed memberships and ancillary items, all of which remain as

per the original proposal that was voted in favour by the membership”. The Committee has continued to work with GemLife to ensure a desirable outcome for the club. GemLife is working on providing Club members with a “comprehensive package of proposed course drawings with details of water storage and specifications for the construction of tees, fairways and greens”.

The Clubhouse drawings will show all the fittings and fixtures being provided, and there will be a contract setting out terms and conditions of the final proposal for the golf club. All this information will be made available to members with briefing sessions and ample time for member feedback before a special general meeting to discuss and then vote on the proposal.

can understand that; but if the forefathers of Cooroy had that thinking, you lucky residents would not be here! Life is not about what you have for yourself, but what you leave in the community for the next generation. The Golf Club at Cooroy is like all other sporting clubs in Cooroy, open to everyone, and its current members are the caretakers for the next generation. GemLife is planning to inject approximately $7 million as improvements to

our facility at no cost to the community or Council. If GemLife was to be successful, there would be approximately 500 new residents to make Cooroy businesses prosper. Rates to the Council coffers would incur virtually no ongoing cost to the Council, as all inside roads and landscape gardens are the responsibility of the resort. You can’t stop development, and wouldn’t it be better for Cooroy to receive upgrades rather than some neighbouring town? I write this letter to give to the residents the complete story about what can happen in our town for the betterment of future generations. It’s not about us now, but what we leave for the future. There is not a sports organisation anywhere that would not welcome a $7 million injection if it’s fair and equitable. As a group of residents, we need to ask our council why it is holding the town back, especially when the developer has offered to help with infrastructure and a sporting club; and when we need more property for residents. In the words of a true-blue Queenslander, Pauline Hanson: “Please Explain!” I maintain that I follow no political party, only the one that produces the best for our community.

IN connection to your front page article, dated 1 December 2021, “Gemlife sets up legal team”, I would like to ask the following questions about this proposal. I’m a member of Cooroy Golf Club, and current Golf Champion, and I find it hard to understand the Council’s rejection of such a proposal, having read their objections. Some of their objections were as follows: • Too far out of town! It’s closer to the centre of Cooroy CBD than Palm Lake. • Important piece of agricultural land! The run-off from this use would be 100 times more damaging, eco-wise, than water running off tin roofs and bitumen associated with the proposed retirement village. • Eco damage from run-off! I was the landscaper for the first half of Palm Lake, Cooroy, and there is always a requirement for new developments to have holding ponds to cleanse all run-off prior to it going into waterways. This would not be the same, perhaps, for agricultural use unless enforced by Council. In any proposal to increase the size of the town, infrastructure problems have to be solved: the main one here being the cross-over near the Cooroy Fire Brigade. GemLife will be spending approximately $1.5 million to fight for their application and the Council somewhere in the cost of $1 million, a total of $2.5 million which would go a long way to fixing this problem. Some residents are worried about their piece of paradise being changed and I

Take your time when buying first horse THIS week I thought it would be good to talk about buying your new equine friend. This is not always an easy procedure. As it is very daunting to buy a horse for the first time, I thought that it would be useful to share some tips about things to do and questions to ask. First, do your homework thoroughly. There are good people out there, but others are just dealers. As horses are large animals, they can hurt you when they have been in the wrong hands. So, when finding a horse, I always like to see people catch it from the paddock, as that is one way to learn a lot about the nature of the horse. This request can always be made before your visit. Second, always take your own gear as you do not know about the reliability of the owner’s. Next, make the owner ride the horse, in and outside yards and arenas, as a horse may exhibit quite different behavior once in open space. Then check to make sure that the horse is responsive with a good soft mouth.

come at your expense. Finally, there are a lot of horses out there so I do stress (and I can’t stress enough) that you should take your time and not rush into buying the first horse that you find. If you are unsure when going to test your chosen horse by riding it yourself, take someone with you who is knowledgeable and who may pick up things that you may not notice. You need to keep in mind that horses have teeth, hind legs and an ability to buck – so be careful. It is great to have an equine friend, but please be safe as well. I hope that this advice helps you when buying a horse. Happy riding until next time.

Here, it is a good sign if the horse is ridden with a snaffle. Next, check the horse for signs of lameness or old injuries. Here, you are entitled to ask for a check by a vet. While this may have already been done by the owners, sometimes it may
