Oracle Firewise Board Seeks Status Certification T he Oracle Firewise Board recently submitted an application to the National Fire Protection Association for the purposes of qualifying for a certificate certifying that Oracle has met the requirements for maintaining its status as a “Firewise community in good standing”. This is especially important to homeowners whose insurance companies may offer a premium discount to their clients for owning property in a certified “Firewise Community”. Many residents have utilized the “Oracle Brush Dump” to deposit the brush they have acquired in cleaning and reducing the vegetation that accumulates around their homes and their property. The use of the brush dump not only helps the resident, but it also benefits the community in creating a more fire safe environment. It also helps Oracle to qualify for the Firewise Community
certification awarded by the NFPA. Another benefit of being awarded the certificate is that it enables the Oracle Fire District to apply for a number of governmental grants that underwrite much of the program expense of removing overgrown brush, dead trees and other wildfire fuel sources within the community. Many Oracle residents have participated in the various grant programs and have had their property evaluated by members of Oracle Firewise and treated by the professional fire fighters of the Florence Wildland Fire crew. As a homeowner, check in with the Oracle Fire Department for further information about upcoming fuel reduction grant programs. But what happens when the Florence Wildland Fire crew has finished their work and the property “looks like a park” and then it rains? Who is responsible
for controlling the fast-growing grass and brush we suddenly see sprouting up throughout our community? The answer is that it is the homeowner’s responsibility to keep their property cleared and clean following the fuel reduction work done under one of our grant programs. This season, with the wonderful rains that we have received, the grass has really grown. While it’s nice to see green grass, when it dries, it becomes a primary fuel source for hot, fastmoving, local wildfires. If the home owner is not able to cut and control overgrown grass and brush, there are a number of landscaping business in-andaround Oracle that really do nice work. The Oracle Fire District has a list of landscapers and their phone numbers at the fire station. And yes, the landscapers use the brush dump as well all in the effort of keeping Oracle fire safe.
ORACLE FIREWISE Special to San Manuel Miner

With the weather starting to cool down, activities are picking up in Oracle. On Saturday October 6, 2018 the Oracle Public Library held a book sale. The new community help group, Oracle Village Outreach had a successful fundraising sale of their own to raise money to support helping the homebound in Oracle. St. Helen’s Catholic Church had their annual Fiesta filled with entertainment, music, food, games for the kids and dancing in the night. This coming Saturday, Oct. 13, will be just as busy for Tri-Community residents with the annual Copper Town Days in San Manuel (at the Elks Plaza) and the newest event, FAM Fest at the Arizona Zipline Adventures.

MVS Cross Country ends season By John Hernandez San Manuel Miner
The Mountain Vista Cross Country team celebrated the end of the season this week with a potluck at the Mt. Vista cafeteria. Coach Brady Whitman said the team did well considering they competed against much bigger schools due to a lack of teams in the Central Junior High School League. The team traveled to different meets around the state and they did not have any home meets. One of the outstanding runners this year was Luci Chavez. She finished in 2nd Place at a Kiwanis meet where there were over 200 runners and 9th overall at the Regionals.

San Manuel wins thriller on Homecoming By Andrew Luberda San Manuel Miner The San Manuel football team twice erased 10-point deficits, the last in the final four minutes of the game to defeat visiting Tempe Prep last Friday night, 28 – 24. The Miners trailed the Knights 18 – 8 at the end of third quarter and 24 – 14 with just over four minutes remaining in the game. That’s when the Miners went to work. Junior quarterback Caleb Quintero, who threw for more than 200 yards in the
game, connected with freshman receiver Noah Huerta for a 15-yard touchdown pass to trim the Knights lead to four, 24 – 20, with just over a minute left in the game. Tempe Prep was attempting to run out the clock when senior Emilio Escalante stripped the Knights ball carrier and returned the “fumble” 55 yards for the game-winning touchdown. “I think our kids played great,” San Manuel head coach Damon Lovato said. “It was a great exclamation point to Homecoming Week.” After suffering losses in games that they
held leads in but couldn’t close them out, the Miners turned the tables against Tempe Prep. Albert Lizarraga led the Miners’ offensive attack with seven receptions for 110 yards. Defensively, San Manuel had four interceptions, three sacks, and, of course, one game-changing fumble recovery. Michael Ochoa, a senior, finished with a team-high 17 tackles. After an 0 – 4 start, the Miners have won two of their last three games with arguably the two most important games of the season upcoming at Globe and at Miami.
“We’re still improving from week to week,” Lovato said. “I believe we’re still getting better. Our kids have been receptive the changes we’ve made that have directly affected our results, especially in our wins.” Up next: The Miners travel to Globe this Friday for the first of two-straight crucial road games. “We have to keep the boys focused,” Lovato said. “We can’t worry about Miami without going through Globe first. We need another good week of preparation with a solid game plan and then the boys need to execute like they have been.”
The Miner Swimmers traveled to the Fort Lowell Pool to compete with swim teams from The Gregory School, St. Augustine, and Morenci. The Miner Boys Team won with 64 points, Morenci 23, St. Augustine 19 and The Gregory School 4. The Miner Girls won with 64 points, The Gregory School 25, Morenci
25, and St. Augustine 8. Several of the fastest swimmers in Division III were at the meet making it very tough to win any individual events. Evan Apuron (IM, Back) and Jayden Smith (Fly, Breast) were the only Miners to win both their individual events. Michael Primero-Predgo had a great
finishing sprint in the 50 Free to win by the smallest of margins. Rianna Estrada battled through the 200 Individual Medley in a race that had at least 5 lead changes to finish strong and win. Darien Apuron was easily the best in the 100 Butterfly. It was the relays that won the meet
for the Miners. In fact, the Miners won every relay contested at the meet. Relays are weighted double in the scoring, so winning relays was crucial to winning the meet. For the boys, Hunter Hill, Daniel Garcia, Evan Apuron, Jayden Smith and Michael Primero-Predgo were Continued on page 12

Oracle Piano Society hosts musicians from Nicaragua The Oracle Piano Society is pleased to present Katia and Nina Cardenal, top female musicians from Nicaragua, in concert on Sunday, Oct. 21, at 4 p.m. at the Oracle Center for the Arts, 700 E. Kingston St. The concert is free, but donations are always accepted. Ted Warmbrand is sponsoring the event. Katia Cardenal, Nicaraguan musician and activist, will share her beautiful music and powerful message against violence. Katia Cardenal was born in Nicaragua in 1963. She became a fan of popular music at an early age and began to perform in public with her brother, Salvador, when they were just 16. They called themselves the Duo Guardabarranco, after their national bird. It did not take long for her fresh harmonies, original poetry, and melodic songs to gain popularity. She was not only recognized by people in her country, but also internationally by the supporters of Moviminto de la Nueva Cancion Latinoamericana. With only a few years of experience, she began to tour the Americas and Europe. Amidst her other work, Katia also
graduated as a musical educator in 1984 and worked as a flute and solfa teacher for kids and adolescents in different schools. Since January 1997, she has strengthened her solo career and released nine solo albums, which represented different stages of her career. In 2004, she started her own record label in Nicaragua. Currently, she gives concerts and continues doing her songs, her brother Salvador Cardenal’s
songs, and those of other Hispanic and Scandianvian composers. Since 2008, she tours with her daughter, Nina Cardenal who sings and plays guitar. Katia Cardenal is arguably the most prominent female musician in Nicaraguan history. Singing her brother’s
composition, Dame Tu Corazon, she won an OTI on Spanish language TV in international competition with the greats representing every Spanish speaking country. Their albums produced by their big fan Jackson Browne were released Continued on page 15

A corporation has a right to be represented by an officer of the corporation, and a limited liability company (“LLC”) may be represented by a managing member. A corporation or an LLC may also be represented by an attorney. If you represent yourself, you have the responsibility to properly complete your court papers and to file them when they are due.
