be used by this March. The Arizona Department of Forestry has been very helpful with this project and will continue to provide assistance. I promise to say more about this project once it is organized and contracts are sought. But I will say this, that I am proud of the WNRCD and the Town of Kearny in their persistence to make this area safer and more attractive. The new bar and grill is the second piece of news. If you are heading toward Superior from Kearny, look right to the old rock building on Old Ray Road. It is the new G & J’s Restaurant, Bar and Grill.

and a Phone App for Air Quality installing a new pool table. The bar is newly and fully stocked. I wish them well. The third thing is for everyone who lives in Hayden and Winkelman (and I bet it works for Dudleyville as well). The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality has developed a phone app which will let area residents see the daily air quality forecasts and sulfur dioxide data in real time. The app can also serve

as an alert for air quality concerns. ADEQ plans to offer the app in other areas around Arizona. Right now it is available only for Hayden and Winkelman, and also for the Globe/Miami area. Called “Air Arizona,” it is available through GooglePlay and Apple. There is no cost. I suggest also that the folks in Hayden and Winkelman check with their town halls and enroll in the lead

abatement project which is administered through Central Arizona Governments. See (at no cost) if you have lead in your home. If so, the lead will be abated through improvements on your home, again at no cost to you. The Copper Basin Chamber is having a video contest to promote the area. Deadline is Nov. 1. Check the Chamber’s website for more information on the contest.

Finally, it makes my heart glad to report that 11 students from Hayden High School and 32 from Ray High School are enrolled in the Copper Basin Junior Chamber of Commerce. These 43 young people meet monthly with chamber members and offer their time for all sorts of community projects and improvements. This is all part of the Copper Basin Chamber at work.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Judge Nancy Discher: Re-elect a seasoned candidate As your Justice of the Peace for the Limited Justice Court, Precinct 5 in Oracle, I am happy to announce my re-election campaign for the new judicial term of January, 2019 through December, 2022. The last four years as your Judge, I have worked with our amazing Court Staff overseeing the following cases: Orders of Protection; Suppression Hearings; DUI’s; Civil Procedures up to $10,000; Small Claims up to $3,500; Traffic Court; Pre-trials; Forcible Detainers; Search Warrant request/issuances for all of Pinal County; and Jury and Bench Trials. As the Judicial Officer, assisted by the Court Staff, we have successfully complied with the Minimal Accounting Standards, and the Court Operations Audit Review in 2017. Also, to meet the Arizona Supreme Court Security Standards, i ensured the installation of video and audio recording equipment, court and parking lot cameras, panic buttons and Security Officers in place at the Oracle Court to protect

our constituency, staff and citizens. During my 30-year business career, I completed several courses in criminal justice and legal aspects of business, civil actions, and medical forensics. As a nursing and hospital executive, and executive business consultant. I was responsible for assuring compliance with local, state, and federal guidelines and statutes. My business relationships were with the legal and law enforcement communities, small and large business leaders, educational entities, politicians, and most importantly a vast cross section of citizens from children to the elderly, mostly those who were vulnerable and with complex situations seeking resolutions. My husband, Michael, is retired from Delta Airlines and the U.S. Air Force, Air National Guard. My son, David, is a graduate of University of Arizona with a degree in Aerospace Engineering. He lives with his wife, Cheryl, and four children in Texas. We have

been residents in Arizona for over 36 years. Michael is a native of Arizona. My extensive business, advanced education, and four years of experience as Judge in the Limited Justice Court will ensure that I will meet the challenges of serving all citizens fairly and competently in both courts in the new Precinct 5. It has been my honor to serve you these past four years, and I look forward to serving you for another four year term. Strategic Plan To Address New Precinct 5 Court Challenges: This new Precinct 5 will cover an enormous geographical area, including the Copper Corridor of Pinal County. The Court looks forward to serving all citizens from the rural areas, as well as those from the towns and urban settings. Having been a professional healthcare clinician/nurse and serving as a judge, both disciplines require a commitment to serve all, regardless of background, ethnicity and socioeconomic origins. Non-partisanship after the

election is paramount. The court is here to uphold the law while considering each defendant as an individual, assisting them to a positive resolution/pathway. Our new expanded precinct will require expertise in advanced technologies, complex database configurations, and the leadership of a court staff to meet all challenges. The Team we have in place is ready to meet your court interactions, and consists of judges (presiding and pro-tem) and court staff

with over 100 years of combined experience. Re-elect Judge Nancy Discher to the Best Court Team fully prepared and

ready to meet and exceed your court experience. /s/ Nancy Discher Justice of the Peace, Oracle

Hayden battles top-ranked Williams in finale

By Andrew Luberda Copper Basin News The Hayden football team doesn’t count moral victories, but it gave top-ranked Williams a more competitive game than perhaps some expected. The No. 5 Lobos were defeated by the Vikings last Friday night in the regularseason finale for both teams, 40 – 20. It was the Vikings’ second smallest margin of victory – they beat Mogollon earlier this season, 42 – 40. The 20 points scored by the Lobos were also the second

most allowed by Williams. “I was satisfied with our play,” Hayden head coach John Estrada said. “Our kids played tough. Once again, our mistakes hurt us. Take those away and the outcome could have been different. “It was harsh conditions. The field was wet, and it was cold,” he added. Not taking anything away from Williams, they are a good team, but we’re right there as well. We may get another chance at them.” Hayden earned the No. 5 seed in the 1A playoffs that being this Friday, Oct. 19,

when the Lobos will host No. 12 Anthem Prep. It could be argued that the Lobos deserved the No. 4-seed and a first-round bye. “I’m happy with our seed,” Estrada said. Of course, a No. 4-seed would have been better for us, but it is what it is. “We’ll need to take one game at a time. Our focus is on Anthem Prep this week. They are a much better team than a 12seed.” Anthem Prep is big and has a quarterback who can throw, according to Estrada. The Lobos are counting on a

home-field advantage to advance to the next round. “We’re hosting a game in Hayden,” Estrada said. “That hasn’t happened in a while. “Our kids earned this, especially our seniors,” he continued. “They’ve worked extensively hard this year and I’m very proud of them. It’s good for our program, our community, and Hayden High School. We’ll just need to play our best football from here on out and finish strong.” Friday’s kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Ray ready for second season By Andrew Luberda Copper Basin News Despite a losing three of its last four games of the regular season, including three-straight against playoff teams, the Ray football team earned the No. 10 seed in the 1A state playoffs that begin this

Friday. The Bearcats (5 – 4) will play at No. 7 Bagdad (6 – 3) on Friday, Oct. 19, at 6 p.m. “It’s a brand-new season and we should be healthy,” Ray assistant coach Jimmy Fessenden told Copper Basin News. “When healthy I believe we can beat any

team in the state.” Ray defeated only one of the five playoff teams on its schedule this season – No. 11seed Duncan in the season opener, 24 – 0. The Sultans represent a still challenge in the first round. “Bagdad is a perennial contender,” Fessenden said. “They have playoff

experience and are well coached.” The Sultans have reached at least the state semis every year since 2012, winning the state championship in 2013 and 2016. “We must come to practice focused and we must believe we can beat Bagdad,” Fessenden said. “We need to expect to win, not hope to win.”

CASA of Gila County seeks volunteers On Oct. 27, communities across Arizona – including CASA staff and volunteers -- will participate in Make a Difference Day, the nation’s largest day of community service. While the impact of annual Make a Difference Day is tremendous and serves communities nationwide, CASA volunteers make a difference on more than just one day each year. They make a difference for a lifetime. With approximately 100 Gila County children now living in foster homes, shelters, in group homes or with relatives, the need for CASA volunteers is urgent. “Whether or not you participate in Make a Difference Day this year, we ask that you consider making a difference in the life of a child,” said Emily Leverance, coordinator for CASA of Gila County. “The children in our community urgently need you to advocate for them in court, to be their voice and to change their lives.” CASA of Gila County currently has 11 volunteers advocating for children. a serious need for CASA volunteers. “Children are the most vulnerable of populations,” said Leverance. “The communities here are so close, so it’s very personal, and you just see the need to help children here more than you see it in an urban setting.” She added, “I just feel there are kids who don’t have a voice here and are left to struggle, so we need to have people fighting for them.” The CASA program, which has offices in all 15 Arizona counties, recruits and trains community-based volunteers to speak up for the rights of abused and neglected children in court. Town of Hayden reschedules National Night Out event Weather, school schedules and motor vehicle accidents all have a way of changing the best of plans. The Town of Hayden discovered this fact when all three of those factors conspired to derail the town’s plans to celebrate National Night Out. But never fear! The event has been rescheduled and all is back on track. On Tuesday, Oct. 23, 5-8 p.m., Garms Park, 173 5th St. in Hayden (in front of the library) will be the site of an anti-

crime event, the 35th Annual National Night Out, that will include participation from public safety agencies in the Copper Basin and surrounding areas. What is National Night Out? it is an annual communitybuilding campaign promoting neighborhood camaraderie between the community and its police.
