October Brings Many Events to the Copper Basin Area
M
y older friends laugh at me, but I seem to be getting older at a younger age than they did! The eyes, the ears, my balance and stamina – all seem to be heading South. My mind still feels fresh as ever, but my mouth has a way of not saying what I’m thinking! Still, God has blessed me with a strong heart and a desire to be part of this wonderful world. I’m slower than I used to be not so long ago, but my desire to learn and serve is as strong as ever. I like living in a part of the world where people care for each other. Francisco Calzadillas reports that Jovanna, his wife who was shot in the head in Las Vegas, is being transferred to a medical facility in the Valley of the Sun, closer to home. The special GoFundMe fund set up for Jovanna’s family reports more than $76,000 given in support, well on the way to the goal of $100,000. I predict the family will require even more funding than this, so please be generous. On your computer, Google “GoFundMe” and select Calzadillas Medical and Travel. I don’t know the particulars at press time, but I hear there will be a local softball tournament to benefit the family over the Halloween weekend. Please support it. A benefit golf tournament for Jena Martinez Inzunza will be held at the golf course in Hayden on Saturday, Nov. 11.

Keep your eyes open for information about how to make a foursome and take part. Here again, this is happening because people care. October seems to kick off most regional happenings. The Halloween weekend is no exception. Monday through Thursday, Oct. 23-26, the Kearny Library is having a book sale, and you won’t believe the prices! Books are duplicates or have been removed from service, and all of them are bargains. No matter how little the purchase price is, you will benefit the library. Saturday, Oct. 28, Alden Road in Kearny will be the place for the Great Pumpkin and Trick or Trunk celebration. The fund begins at 4 p.m., with many “from the trunk” dispensers of goodies, the celebration of the Great Pumpkin costumes, and the “sand search” provided by the good folks from ASARCO. There will be more, for sure. Parents, bring your cameras! This event is sponsored by the Copper Basin Chamber of Commerce, serving all the people of the region. There will also be a Free Haunted House in Winkelman, courtesy of local citizens and the Town of Winkelman, on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 28 and 29, 7 p.m., in Chuy’s Barbershop, the green building across the street from the Town Hall on Giffin Avenue. There will be food and goodies for sale. Backing up a week or so, check out Norm’s IGA for its monthly free blood pressure screening on Friday, Oct. 20, from 10 a.m, until noon. Make it a monthly habit. Norm’s IGA is also hosting an Ice Cream and Pie Social for area retirees on Friday, Nov. 3, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. There will be fun and music, and a time to look over the photos and share the memories that you bring. Congratulations to all the people of the Dudleyville Fire District for selecting Leyas Rought to serve on its Board of Directors. Citizen involvement makes for successful

outcomes. Plan on attending the concert sponsored by the Copper Communities Action Board (CCASB) on on Saturday, Nov. 4, at the Hayden-Winkelman Auditorium. There will be many local acts, and the small entrance price of $5 will benefit the CCAB’s work. Lastly, all you “ghoulies and ghosties” of any age, I hope you enjoy trick or treating on Tuesday, Oct. 31. I look forward to seeing you, and I hope you will be safe and keep an eye on the younger kids in your midst.

second half and the Bearcats didn’t have an answer.” After their loss last week to Ft. Thomas, the Lobos were playing a nearly mustwin game versus Ray for more than one reason. “It was a big game for us,” Estrada said. “Not only win and make it to the playoffs, but more because it was the Ray Bearcats. Our boys proved they are resilient by coming back from a 14-point deficit. They kept playing hard and got the job done.” The Lobos’ win sets up a rematch with No. 9 Ft Thomas, a team they played just two weeks ago in a 56 – 42 defeat. Is the recent familiarity an advantage or disadvantage for Hayden? Continued on page 9
The No. 8-ranked Hayden football team defeated its rival, the seventh-ranked Ray Bearcats, last Friday night in a come-frombehind 20 – 14 victory. The Lobos were punched “in the mouth” at the start by the Bearcats, according to Hayden head coach John Estrada. “We came out really flat and made a lot of mistakes,” Estrada told the Copper Basin News. “We stuck to our game plan, made some adjustments at half time, and finished very strong.” “I was very proud of our kids,” he added. “They kept their composure and kept playing hard. “It could go either way,” Estrada answered. “It’s the playoffs; the team that wants it more will come out victorious.” What must the Lobos do differently this time versus the Apaches? “We’ll need to do our jobs,” Estrada responded. “We can’t come out flat. It’s do or die from here on out. Our offense needs
to be clicking, our defense needs to do its job, and most importantly, (we need to) play Hayden football and hit.” Ray will host No. 10 Valley Union on Saturday, Oct. 21, at 6 p.m. Hayden will play at No. 9 Ft. Thomas on Friday, Oct. 20. That kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Romero, Coleman lead Bearcat runners By Andrew Luberda Copper Area News The Ray cross-country team, led by Phillip Romero and Dallin Coleman, will finish its regular season this Friday at Globe before preparing for next week’s Sectional Championship in Gilbert. A team of typically six runners, sometimes eight – four freshman, two sophomores and two seniors – depending on the football team’s schedule, has a chance to follow a great regular season by making history. “I am excited this year as it is our third season since beginning the program,” Ray head coach Brian Colerman wrote in an email to Copper Basin News. “I am optimistic if everyone runs their race we stand a chance to qualify (for state) as a team for the first time in Bearcats’ history.” It won’t be easy, but nothing worth achieving ever is.

The Cats’ competition includes several other small schools around the state, including “an extremely tough section,” according to Coleman. Romero, a sophomore, is in his second year of competition and has a chance to qualify for state as an individual. Dallin Coleman, a freshman, has an equal chance to qualify individually. The Cats find strength in numbers, as senior teammates Chandler Coleman and Dyllin Lopez as well as sophomore Luke Warren and freshmen Matt Rutter, Saul Torres and Eric Kelley have each also enjoyed turns at leading the team. “(It) keeps me guessing as to who will beat who each week,” the Cats’ head coach said. “The plus to this is a great pack time for these boys. That is always a strong point when it comes to placing as a team.” The sectional meet is scheduled for Oct. 27 at Crossroads

or several years there had been talk about the San Carlos Apache Tribe of Arizona building a casino in the area of the extreme southwest corner of their reservation. After it was recently built it was called the Apache Sky Casino, and the entrance to it is from Highway 77 in Pinal County, Arizona, not far north of the turn off of the road that leads to Aravaipa Canyon where I had lived for many years. I had attended the Apache Sky Casino grand opening on April 1, 2017 and there were many people there. I wish them luck in building their planned larger Apache Sky Casino with a hotel and restaurant in that area. There is still work going on at that site, and I imagine the available jobs at the Casino are welcome to many in that Dudleyville area and other areas. The Apache Sky Casino has an online site in which people can learn what events are taking place,

I added my post on Oct. 7, 2017 about what I thought about my visits there, and how I enjoyed the view to the south of the top of Brandenburg Mountain that overlooks the western end of Aravaipa Creek. I also said that if the Apache Sky Casino has a gift shop at their planned future casino that I hoped that they would add copies of my published book A CREEKSIDE STORY - FROM BUCKBOARD DAYS TO ECOTOURISM at the shop because of some of the history I wrote about the San Carlos Apache Tribe and

It’s Time To Do Something About Pinal County’s Deadly Roads The pleas for new roads and freeways in Pinal County aren’t just about horrible commutes or missing a child’s game or an event with family or friends because of bad traffic. It’s because existing roads and especially Interstate Ten have become downright dangerous. As Pinal County population has surged from 180,000 people in 2000 to over 400,000 and climbing today, traffic deaths have increased substantially. Sadly, there have been 323 in just the past ten years. Add to that 878 serious accidents and 19,159 overall ones. That’s tragic, not only for the families involved but the delays even small accidents that can cause missed dinners and missed opportunities. And we all know how bad Interstate Ten has become. Indeed, I-10 within Pinal County is ranked by national media as among the most deadly and dangerous in the United States. This situation can’t continue. But with the state and federal governments offering no help it’s time for the people to take charge. And the reality is that existing county road funds are not sufficient to get us new roads and freeways for relief. No one likes new taxes but they are necessary for things like jails, roads and freeways. Propositions 416 and 417 on the November 7th ballot are THE chance to keep Pinal County moving in the right direction, and get new ways around our communities from east to west and north to south. The costs are very small, just 24 cents per day for the average Pinal County household, but with benefits like more jobs, easier drives, rising home values and safer roads the rewards are very big. That’s why so many Republicans, Democrats, Independents, business leaders, and residents throughout Pinal County are saying yes!
