Hayden advances to Q-Finals By Andrew Luberda Copper Basin News It wasn’t the Hayden football team’s best performance, but it was good enough to reach this week’s quarterfinals after the No. 5 Lobos defeated No. 12 Anthem Prep in the first-round of the 1A State Championship Playoffs last Friday, 34 – 21.
“It was ugly, but we’ll take the (win),” Hayden head coach John Estrada said. “Anthem Prep brought it. We made many mistakes. In order for us to stay alive in the playoffs we need to play our best football.” The Lobos will make the more than three-hour trip to face No. 4 Salome in the quarterfinals this Friday. “It’s a concern, and our away record is not good by any means,” Estrada said about the long trip.
What’s it going to take to defeat the Frogs? “Salome is very fast,” Estrada responded. “They run a lot of misdirection plays. We’ll need to stay home and do our jobs and be physical.” Friday’s kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
Ray’s season ends with playoff loss By Andrew Luberda Copper Basin News The Ray football team achieved one of its goals of reaching the 1A State Championship Playoffs. Unfortunately, it lasted only one game after a 58 – 0 loss to No. 7-seed Bagdad. “The guys played their hardest, so us coaches couldn’t ask any more than that,” Ray assistant coach Jimmy Fessenden said. A depleted roster due to injuries and low participation were among the main reasons for the lopsided score. “We’ve been playing with hardly any subs the last four or five weeks,” Fessenden said. The Bearcats head into the offseason with some positives to look forward to next year. “Two big positives are, because of these injuries, many of our underclassmen got significant playing time,” Fessenden said. “Especially in the playoffs. We will be a playoff team next year as well.” “The coaching staff would love to see our numbers go back up to where they usually are. This is the smallest roster we have had since I got here quite a few years ago.”

Pinal County welcomes new business; jobs to benefit southern and eastern county residents Last Thursday, at the Casa Grande City Council Chambers a joint study session between the Pinal County Board of Supervisors and the Casa Grande City Council was held regarding the Lucid Motors Project. On the agenda was the presentation and discussion of the economic and revenue impacts that Lucid Motors would have for both the City of Casa Grande and Pinal County. Applied Economics, a third party economic contractor, performed an analysis which resulted in a few of the following: • 58% increase in manufacturing jobs in Casa Grande and Pinal County • One-time construction impacts that will create thousands of local jobs • A rise of visibility of the region, seeding additional economic development in other industries This project demands a large workforce, which means more jobs in Pinal County. Key findings from the analysis include a total of 4,803 direct and indirect jobs. Additionally, between the City of Grande and Pinal County a total of $81.9 million dollars over a period of 20 years will be seen as the tax revenue impact. “These are the type of high paying jobs we want in Pinal County,” said Vice-Chairman Pete Rios. “These jobs will benefit Florence, Coolidge, Eloy and the Eastern end of the County as well.”
