Superior begins chase for title By Andrew Luberda Copper Area News The third-ranked Superior football team will begin its quest for the 1A State Championship this Saturday against a familiar opponent, No. 6 Trivium Prep. The Panthers defeated the Crimson Knights in the season opener, 34 – 26. Trivium has won eight-straight since its only loss of the season. “Trying to defeat the same team twice in a season is difficult,” Superior head coach Ryan Palmer told the Superior Sun. “However, that was 10 weeks ago and we have grown as a team throughout the season and are battled tested.” Junior quarterback Steven Ybarra threw five touchdown passes in that game and there’s little argument he and his team are playing with great confidence heading into the second-round playoff game. The Panthers’ defense is perhaps the most-improved unit since the opener. Palmer detailed the keys to a Superior victory. “Discipline, fundamentals and execution,” he said. Saturday’s game, in Superior, is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Superior Postmaster to retire this week

By Mila Besich-Lira Superior Sun After 26 years of public service to the United States Postal Service, Superior Postmaster Michael Roderick will be retiring, his last day of service at the Superior Post Office is Thursday, Oct. 26, 2017. Roderick has served Superior for 13 years. He started his career with the United State Postal Service as a mail carrier in Mesa, then worked as a supervisor for the Chandler Post Office before becoming the Postmaster in Superior. He has been commuting 50 miles each way for the past 13 years, a drive he won’t miss but he will miss the people and his staff in Superior. Every day the staff at the Superior Post Office processes 12 feet of mail. Unique to Superior is that local carriers prepare the mail for their routes, before event starting their routes. “That is not something other carriers

have to do,” Roderick said. “I have always been proud of our staff in their efficiency.” He hopes that local customers do not see much a difference after his departure because the local staff has such a good handle on how things are supposed to operate. For his retirement, he plans to enjoy quality time with his wife, three adult children and his seven grandchildren. Two of his children live in Colorado and the other in Texas, so he is anticipating another kind of commute traveling to visit them frequently. The USPS will be appointing an Officer in Charge to run the Superior Post Office until a new Postmaster can be appointed. They do not anticipate that the position will be filled until mid January 2018. Residents and post office customers are invited to to stop by and say goodbye to Postmaster Roderick throughout the week. A small celebration will be held on Thursday.

No one likes taxes, but they are necessary to pay for essential government services like jails, roads and freeways. Some suggest all of the transportation improvements in Propositions 416 and 417, including more Dial-A-Ride services for seniors and the disabled, can happen with existing revenues. Impossible. Not only that, but existing revenues for existing county roads and maintenance are set to expire in 2025. So who will pay for the new roads to make us safer? What will stop the increasing number of fatalities and serious accidents? There have been more just this month. Who will pay for the new freeways to make sure future growth doesn’t suffocate our streets? The tooth fairy? We can either get ahead or get more behind, including behind a lot more traffic. Whatever new road project you like in Propositions 416 and 417, or if there is another one you want to see happen near you, they can’t happen without new revenues. There’s no magic money laying around, or under your pillow. So let’s keep Pinal County moving in the right direction. Let’s stand with every mayor in Pinal County, all members of the Board of Supervisors, our Sheriff and County Attorney, many Chambers of Commerce and residents everywhere who understand that if there was a better, easier way that road would have been chosen. But there’s not. And if we want more jobs, more freeways and safer roads, the 24 cents per day for the average Pinal County household that Propositions 416 and 417 will cost us is a very cheap way to make them happen, now.

YesOn416And417.com Paid for by New Roads and Freeways Before It's Too Late: Yes on Propositions 416 and 417. Major Funding provided by We Build Arizona PAC, Robson Communities, Arizona Automobile Dealers Elections Expenditures PAC.
