LETTER TO THE EDITOR CAC Governing Board Elections Greetings residents of the Copper Corridor. Come Nov. 6, you will make some important choices and I’d like to illustrate the differences between two candidates running for the Central Arizona College governing board. I am writing as a resident of Pinal County, a former student of Central Arizona College and a supporter of education in our rural community. I first started my education at the Aravaipa campus and then transferred to Signal Peak where I completed my bachelors of nursing through the NAU program, while never having to leave the county. I had access to all the resources I needed for my degree, face to face instruction, tutors, academic advisors, and financial aid support. In addition, there are numerous leadership opportunities in clubs and organizations that created for me, a fulfilling collegiate experience for the three years I was a full-time student at Aravaipa. I want to urge you to vote for Ms. Gladys Christensen on Tuesday because I believe she cares about our access to higher education in Pinal County and thinks about students when making her decisions. As a longtime resident of the Copper Corridor, I know that many people in our community rely on the educational courses at CAC Aravaipa to get certificates for better jobs and transfer

to a university. Without these programs, local students would have to travel great distances for quality in person instruction. I have seen first hand that some people in Pinal County do not seem to think that having a campus in our area is important. Ken Robinson, who is running against Gladys, and a group he belongs to have been longtime critics of CAC. They have been critical of a multitude of things most importantly the existence of the Aravaipa campus. This group has been quoted as saying things like, “I have sent my kids to college and I do not think my tax dollars should be used for education anymore.” Students who have access to education tend to stay in their communities, then in turn pay taxes in this area instead of moving away to develop roots in new communities far from Pinal County. I am happy to
give back to an institution that has given me and my community so much. I think residents need to ask the important question - why would someone want to serve on a board of a college that they dislike? The answer is they could vote for closing a campus (Aravaipa campus) or against anything that would mean their taxes would be utilized for education. Gladys Christensen was a target of these critics; she weathered the storm and has stood by what she believed in. She believes in CAC and I am proud to give her my vote and I hope you do too. A lot is at stake, please vote for Gladys Christensen on Nov. 6 and help ensure that all of us in Pinal County have access to a quality education. /s/ Edward Aguirre

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Labeling Superior Schools Dear Superior Community, On Oct. 5, the State School A-F Labels were made public. There are basically two models used to label schools. The K-8 model focuses mainly on student proficiency as well as student growth in relation to the AZMerit test. The 9-12 model also uses the data from the AZMerit test but also includes a college and career ready (CCR) component. This year a hybrid model was included to rate those schools that house crossover grades. Superior Jr/Sr High School(SJSHS) (7-12) falls into that category. JFK Elementary’s overall grade was a “B”. This was a significant improvement from last years “D”. Using the hybrid model, SJSHS was labeled a “D”. The junior high (B) and high school (D) received separate labels last year because they were considered two separate schools. Although the label was a “D”, SJSHS did show growth from the previous year in relation to both AZMerit testing
and CCR points. I truly commend both staff and students in their efforts to improve. Our academic programs are based on a few simple researched-based designs: (1) provide quality instruction each day, (2) use of professional development and collaboration to enhance instruction, (3) assess students so that data can be used to guide instruction and make student decisions, (4) provide both enrichment and intervention opportunities for students based on data, and (5) hold true the belief that every student can learn. The last one requires student motivation and discipline as well. If we all work hard at all five, we will be successful We care about how our students perform on state mandated assessments and we care about our school labels. Our academic programs, school schedules, professional development trainings, and class courses offerings are designed for this purpose. However, this is just
not what we do or who we are. We are so much more than assessments and labels. On Saturday Oct. 20, our FCCLA will have hosted its 9th Annual Cancer Walk. On Nov. 2, the DECCA Club will be sponsoring the annual Fill-A-Bowl that benefits the Superior Food Bank. Every winter, JFK Student Council purchases turkeys’ and hams’ for families in Superior. Every year we also send DECA and FCCLA students to compete on a state and national level. Last but not least, I
never get tired of watching our students, especially my daughters compete for championships as a Superior Panther. Finally, I am grateful to our teachers, secretaries, custodians, food service, maintenance workers, and bus drivers who work hard every day, usually at multiple jobs so that our kids will receive the best all-around education possible. Sincerely, /s/ Stephen Estatico SUSD Superintendent

Superior advances to Semis after ‘tough’ win
By Andrew Luberda Superior Sun The No.2-seed Superior football team defeated No. 7 Bagdad in the quarterfinals of the 1A state playoffs last Friday night, 36 – 18. The win was the Panthers second this season against the Sultans, but the most recent win was clearly more meaningful as a berth in this Saturday’s state semifinals was on the line. “It was about as hard-hitting as they come,” Superior head coach Ryan Palmer said about the game afterwards. “The officials told me, as they were walking off the field after the game, that was the hardest hitting game they have had at any level this year. “I am really proud of this team,” he added. “They showed a lot of toughness to grit out that win.” The Panthers’ offense racked up 450 yards of total
offense, including 271 passing and 179 rushing. Senior quarterback Steven Ybarra threw for three touchdowns and rushed for two more. Adam Navarrette, a sophomore, caught four passes for 46 yards with a pair of touchdowns. Senior Jared Moreno finished with six receptions for 92 yards and a touchdown. Ybarra also led the team with 163 rushing yards on 15 carries. The Panthers’ defense totaled five sacks in the win, including two apiece by Cedric Mendoza and Gabriel Castillo. Daniel McConnel had the other. Four players ended with double-digit tackles, led by Ybarra with 12. Navarrette and Mendoza each had 11 while Matthew DiazGonzales finished with 10. The Panthers will next play No. 3 Mogollon on Saturday for a chance to win the 1A State Championship a week later. “Mogollon is a tough, athletic and disciplined team,”
A great catch.

Instructions from the coach.
Palmer said. “(The Mustangs) are well-coached. We will need to play at a championship level.” The Panthers will be making their fourth-straight appearance in the semis, and if it’s true that defense wins championships, this could be the year Superior lifts the gold ball. There is another strength of the team that should be beneficial as well. “Experience is invaluable,” Palmer said. “This team knows what it takes to win and we are extremely motivated.” What will it take to come out with a victory on Saturday? “We need to play our most disciplined game yet,” responded Palmer. “We must leave it all out on the field and make sure, regardless of the outcome, that when the scoreboard clock hits zero, we have no regrets.” This Saturday’s game will be played at Maricopa High School. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

ADOT Construction Academy helping more women enter construction trades; minorities, veterans, jobless among others benefiting from the program
PHOENIX – An unemployed single mom of three, Iris Bost hoped to break into the male-dominated construction industry that would provide better pay than working retail. Through a social media post, the 42-year-old Globe resident was excited to learn about an Arizona Department of Transportation-sponsored Construction Academy at Gila Community College. She signed up for the free apprenticeship program to learn carpentry and
earned college credit too. After finishing her training last year, Bost decided to start her own business teaching classes on job-related safety and health hazards as well as flagger/traffic control certification in partnership with ADOT and Gila Community College. “There should be more women in the construction field, and I want to do what I can to help them,” said Bost, who taught her first Occupational Safety and Health

Administration class at Gila Community College in August. “I want to teach both women and men about what they can and cannot do on the job so that they will work safely.” To help remove barriers to careers in transportation construction, Construction Academy programs that ADOT offers with employers, community colleges, Native American tribes and others provide free training and other support – including safety gear and help with transportation and child care – for members of economically disadvantaged groups. While the list of qualifying individuals also includes minorities, veterans and those who are unemployed, among others, one benefit of this program has been helping more women enter the construction trades. Of the more than 600 people who have graduated from Construction Academy pre-apprentice training programs since they began in 2014, about 35 percent are women. Three-quarters of participants have gone on to work in the construction field as flaggers, commercial truck drivers, heavy equipment operators, highway surveyors, electricians, carpenters, painters, pipe fitters, concrete finishers and block masons. Depending on the position, they start out earning $14 to $24 an hour, and sometimes more. “ADOT is investing in attracting and training skilled construction workers. God Does Answer Prayers
rom Daniel 9:25, Gabriel is speaking: “at the beginning of your prayer, the command was given to me to come and tell you the understanding of the message and vision.” In 10:12 Gabriel speaks again: “from the time you began to pray for understanding, God sent me to respond to your request; but the prince of Persia came against me, and Michael had to come to help me get through to you.” God responds the first moment we begin to pray, because He understands and cares about our situations. In these instances, Daniel knew that without a divine grasp, he would be frustrated and unable to respond correctly.

But my husband encouraged me to keep going,’’ McKinley said. “This is a great opportunity for anyone looking to grow. ADOT’s program provided me with free gear and taught me what I needed to go to work.” For more information or to apply for a Construction Academy, please visit azdot.gov/BECO, call 602.712.7761 or pick up materials at the ADOT Business Engagement and Compliance Office, 1801 W. Sometimes we feel like God isn’t listening to us. Well, He is, but so is our spiritual enemy. If he can make it seem like Father doesn’t care what we are dealing with, we may just give up or not bother to ask the Lord for help. Psalm 4:3, ‘the Lord hears when I call to Him.’ 2 Chronicles 7:14, ‘when we call, He will hear from Heaven and respond.’ Experience shows us that what He says, He will do!
