Lately, I have been hearing some unfounded and unkind remarks. If Karen and her new clerk, Joanne seem tired they are. They both are assisting the very new Winkelman/Hayden Postmaster. All are spread thin. We have gone through Postmasters that don’t plan on staying here. This Is where Karen’s home and family has been since the mid nineties. On another issue have you noticed how clean the P.O. windows are?!! Did you see Karen cleaning them? She pitched in to help her former clerk clean the building. Karen is trying to make Kearny’s P.O. efficient, clean and a place

our community can proud of again. She truly believes in customer service. So consider there are many hands that handle your mail. The person in front of you may not be at fault. Give them a chance to resolve it professionally. Also, consider they do not have a half hour to chat. They are friendly but have work to do to keep it running smoothly. Please do go in and introduce yourself to Karen and Joanne. Get to know them!! /s/ René Dow

ASARCO Employees Enjoy Family Fun

A

SARCO employees from all work locations in Arizona converged on Kearny for the annual ASARCO Family Day. Hubbard Park was bustling with all sorts of activities, from raffles and cornhole tournaments to rock climbing and a zip line. This was the largest Family Day in some time. Setup alone took three days. Busses brought in many of the employees from the Tucson area. The Town of Kearny provided a pleasant police presence and the ambulance crew was on hand. Two lines of food were provided, with pork brisket on one side and hamburgers and hots dogs on the other. Prizes large and

small were announced to winners on a regular basis. Happy children scampered and rode on rides, and teenagers put away their cell phones to climb a mountain or ride a mechanical bull. It turned into a happy day for Kearny merchants too. One businessman recounted, “I thought the event would draw business away from the uptown. But ASARCO was constantly ordering all sorts of food items, and after Family Day lots of people went uptown to continue visiting over meals.” Old Time Pizza set a record for home deliveries on a Saturday night. There’s an other event coming up soon in Kearny to which everyone is invited. On

Tuesday, Oct. 9, the Kearny Fire Department is observing Fire Prevention Week with an open house at the Fire Department building uptown. There will be truck tours for the youngsters and free hot dogs, nachos and drinks for everyone cooked and served up by the fire fighters themselves. This is a real family event. The fire bay will be open and set up with tables and chairs. It will start at 6 p.m. and last until 8 p.m. This Saturday, October 6, the Arizona Trail is hosting “AZ Trail in a Day.” Hikers, horse riders and cyclists will

cover every mile of the trail in 24 hours. Trailheads will be busy as the people arrive to set out on their journeys, which will vary from 2 miles to more than 15 miles. This marks the 50th year of the original Arizona Trail and also serves as a kickoff to the fall hiking season. A group of people from the Copper Basin hope to be on hand to welcome the hikers and riders and let them know much they are appreciated by our residents., This is also the time when our first snowbirds start making their appearance. They are truly winter

Superior defeats Lobos; Hayden to face NFL Yet in Homecoming By Andrew Luberda Copper Basin News Superior senior quarterback Steven Ybarra made Superior’s Homecoming/Senior Night one to remember for himself and his teammates, as he accounted for seven

touchdowns in the second-ranked Panthers’ 46 – 6 victory against No. 5 Hayden. “We played a very good team that was hungry for the win,” Hayden head coach John Estrada told the Copper Basin News. “It was just an old fashion [sic] whipping.” The Lobos were held to their lowest scoring total on the season by a team many believe will win the 1A State Championship. “This loss was all me,” said Estrada. “Our kids weren’t prepared like they should have been, and we paid the price. Superior is a very well-coached team and they just picked us apart.” The Lobos need to flush last week’s game and move on quickly. They can guarantee a first-round playoff game at home if they finish in the top-eight in the rankings, a goal

that remains very likely with wins in their final two games. “Losing at times can make you a better team,” Estrada said. “I hope this is the case with us. We’ve worked too hard. “We need to learn from last Friday’s game and perform better. Our goal is to finish off our season strong and we have our sights on hosting a first-round state playoff game on our home field. That hasn’t happened in a while.” Up next: Hayden hosts NFL Yet Academy on Senior Night this Friday. The Eagles were defeated by Joseph City last week, 62 – 44. “We will be ready to play Friday night against NFL Yet, guaranteed,” Estrada said. “I want our seniors finishing their last home game of the regular season with a win.” Friday’s kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Ray playoff hopes in jeopardy after loss to Chargers By Andrew Luberda Copper Basin News The Ray football team lost its second-straight game by a lopsided margin after a 43 – 8 defeat at Arete Prep last Friday. The Bearcats are now No. 10 in the most recent AIA rankings. The top 12 teams qualify for the state playoffs, and with Friday’s game against No. 2 Superior looming, there is little room for error. In last Friday’s loss, Ray trailed 36 – 0 at halftime before outscoring the Chargers 8 – 7 in the second half. “I think we forgot to show up the first half,” Ray as-

sistant coach Jimmy Fessenden said. “(We) outplayed them in the second half.” The Bearcats were undermanned against Chargers, forced to play without Jaden Pace, Eric Manriquez, Alex Bravo, and Romeo Williams-Varley, all of them key players on both sides of the ball. “We need to get healthy,” Fessenden said. Up next: Ray hosts Superior on Senior Night this Friday. The Panthers defeated Hayden 46 – 6 last Friday night. “Superior has a lot of weapons,” Fessenden said. “(The quarterback), [Steven Ybarra] has a few options to throw the ball to and is a big threat to run.” Friday’s kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Three local scouts receive Eagle Scout rank at Court of Honor The elite group of Boy Scouts of America Eagle Scouts increased by three last night at a Court of Honor held at the LDS Ward Building. The three local youth were recognized at the award ceremony surrounded by their peers, parents and community members. Braden Kade Chester is the son of Denae Lynn Enkey of Kearny. Braden was a graduate of the class of 2018 and is currently employed at Eddie Tire in Winkelman. Braden will be relocating to California with the family next month to pursue his ambitions. Braden’s Eagle Scout Project was the lighting upgrade at the Rail & Copper Park in Kearny. Spencer Dewayne Bryce is the son of Jimmy and Pamela Bryce of Kearny. Spencer is a Senior at Ray High School and has been an active member of the Football and Track teams throughout his time at Ray High. Spencer enjoys Camping and Family outings and is considering a future in Welding as he has excelled at the

program at Ray. Spencer’s Eagle Project was the refurbishing of the press box at Dave McFee Memorial Field. Dakota Wiltcher Willis is the son of Willy and Breezy Joleen Willis of Kearny. Dakota is a Senior at Ray High School and also excels at Football and Track for the Bearcats. Dakota enjoys Hunting and Motocross and is also planning on pursuing a career in Welding. Dakota’s Eagle Project was the fabrication of clothing racks for the ARC which is for the handicapped here in Kearny. Dakota joins his older siblings Tanner and Alex whom are both Eagle Scouts. Joe Furstenberg is the current Scout Master of Troop 5872 with Neil Nebeker (former longtime Scout Master) as advisor. Both Joe and Neil are also Eagle Scouts. Since it’s inception in 1912 only about 2 percent of all boys who join the Boy Scouts of America reach the rank of Eagle Scout. Prestigious company indeed!
