Sun Life: Managing the opioid crisis locally By Dr. Matthew Bertsch and Dr. Chinwe Chukwurah, M.D. Sun Life Family Health Center The opioid crisis has had an effect on many people around Arizona, and around the country. Although the problem with opiates is not a new one, it certainly has developed much traction recently. With governors, legislators, our national congressional representatives, our senators and even our president talking about the issue, it has garnered a lot of mainstream attention. Opiates/opioids, often used interchangeably, are not new, and neither is drug abuse. However, the attention on the crisis has made health care challenging, even to Sun Life Family Health Center. Patient education It really is not all about the opiates though. Drug abuse, legal and illegal, has run rampant for decades. People who abuse have abused promethazine with codeine for its pleasurable and sedative effect; have abused dextromethorphan for its mild euphoria or extreme hallucinations depending on dose; and have abused other medications meant to treat neuropathic pain for its marijuanalike effects. Drug abuse is not new. The laws and technology in our state have changed, and there is now an Arizona Controlled Substances Prescription Monitoring Program for the safety of patients. Prescribers are now required to check the prescription monitoring program. Prescribers will also be required to prescribe addictive medications electronically. Continuing education will be required for providers as a part of maintaining their license. Prescription doses will also be limited and new opioid packaging requirements have been implemented. The scrutiny around opiate prescribing has led to opioid refugees, those who have had to abandon their addictions to prescription opiates and have turned to illegal street drugs. Patients have turned to both methamphetamine and heroin. Because of all of these overdoses, both legal and illegal, access to the life-saving overdose drug naloxone has increased as well. Sun Life At Sun Life Family Health Center, we practice pain management responsibly.
While our primary care providers have autonomy in pain management, their decisions are guided by policy and proper clinical judgment using guideline-based therapy. What makes us unique, however, is our integrated approach to pain management. We have a team of integrated behavioral health specialists who work with our patients, as many times symptoms can be managed at a behavioral level as opposed to prescribing a medication. This is where our Mindful Alternative Pain Program comes into play. MAPP is a series of classes that focus on alternative and natural ways to cope with issues associated with pain. Clinical pharmacy has made a huge impact on the approach to pain management within Sun Life. Clinical pharmacy has teamed up with primary care providers to review dosing of pain medications of the patients we serve. Clinical pharmacists also provide education to patients about opiates, discuss pain goals with patients, check dangerous drug interactions and consult with providers to ensure proper therapy for patients. The goal of this collaboration is that patients learn to manage their pain and reduce their dependency solely on medications. Sun Life’s community pharmacists Continued on page 14

Looks are deceiving in Miners’ loss at Chandler Prep By Andrew Luberda San Manuel Miner
Sometimes looks can be deceiving. Such was the case in San Manuel’s 36 – 14 loss at No. 17 Chandler Prep last Friday, according to Miners’ head coach Damon Lovato. “We played our best game of the year,” he said. “On offense, we moved the ball very well. We played with
tempo and mixed it up. The Miners held a 14 – 0 lead before being outscored, 36 – 0. “We ran our “Nascar” package two possessions in-arow,” said Lovato, accounting for the Miners’ two quick scores. “Our defense was dominating them.” What changed? Lovato refrained from giving specifics about the circumstances that took his team “out of their flow.”
Julian Hernandez and Caleb Quintero scored the Miners’ touchdowns. Up next: San Manuel hosts Tempe Prep this Friday for Homecoming. The Knights, who reportedly only have 13 players on their roster, lost at Miami last week, 16 – 14. “Really, it’s more about us,” Lovato said. “I told our guys to focus on what their coached to do and not let Tempe Prep’s situation affect us.” Friday’s kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
between Coolidge and San Manuel. Michael swam the lead off leg and will be the first to tell you that his flip turn was less than perfect. At the first relay exchange, the Miners were 3rd when Daniel Garcia entered the water. An outstanding swim by Daniel put the Miners in 1st place at the second exchange as Jayden entered the water. Moments earlier Jayden had finished the grueling 500 Freestyle and even though he was exhausted, he swam an outstanding leg to keep the Miners close. At the final relay exchange Evan entered the water in 3rd place and quickly caught Cholla and nailed the flip turn to give him the momentum to pull ahead of Coolidge on the final length and finish first to secure the meet victory for the Boys. The Miner Girls won 8 events out of 11 events at the meet. Star Chavez won the 500 Freestyle and 100 Breatstroke. Rianna Estrada won the 200 IM and 100 Butterfly. Darien Apuron won the 50 Freestyle and 100 Freestyle. The Miner Girls won the both the Medley Relay
and 200 Freestyle Relay to give the Miners the chance to win. The Miners were in an unusual position where they could win 8 events but still lose the meet. Great swims by Bonnie Bridges to finish 2nd in the 200 Freestyle and by Alyssa Riekofski to finish 2nd in the 100 Backstroke were enough to accumulate the points needed to secure the win for the Miners. Head Coach Alex Gort was thrilled with the wins. “It is very satisfying to win close meets by both the boys and girls.,” Gort said. “As outnumbered as the Miners were, they had to swim great to win the meet and they did!” The Boys Record advanced to 5-2 and the Girls Record advanced to 4-4. The Miners will compete at the Ft. Lowell Pool in Tucson at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 4. The meet will feature the Miners against St. Augustine, Morenci and The Gregory School.
Miner Swimmers win against Cholla and Coolidge
The Miner Swimmers traveled to the Coolidge Pool to compete with swim teams from Cholla High School and Coolidge High School last week. In a close meet, the Miner Boys Team won with 65 points, Coolidge 62 points, and Cholla 42. The Miner Girls won with 71 points, Cholla 64 points, and Coolidge 6 points. For both the Boys and Girls teams, the Miners were outnumbered but made up for it by winning a majority of races. Out of the 11 events at the meet, the Miner Boys won 7 events. Michael Primero-Predgo won both Freestyle sprint events (50 and 100 Freestyle) against a tough field. Evan Apuron was easily the best in the 100 Butterfly and 100 Breaststroke. Jayden Smith won the 500 Freestyle. An easy win in the Medley Relay by the Miners at the beginning of the meet made it clear that the 200 Freestyle Relay would determine which team would win the meet

Pain management is a complicated subject. We have seen that with this collaborative, interdisciplinary approach, medication use is decreasing, and there is an overall decreased risk for medication-related problems. Notice to the Defendant: A lawsuit has been filed against you in justice court! You have rights and responsibilities in this lawsuit. Read this notice carefully. 1. In a justice court lawsuit, individuals have a right to represent themselves, or they may hire an attorney to represent them. A family member or a friend may not represent someone in justice court unless the family member or friend is an attorney. A corporation has a right to be represented by an officer of the corporation, and a limited liability company (“LLC”) may be represented by a managing member. A corporation or an LLC may also be represented by an attorney. If you represent yourself, you have the responsibility to properly complete your court papers and to file them when they are due. The clerks and staff at the court are not allowed to give you legal advice. If you would like legal advice, you may ask the court for the name and phone number of a local lawyer referral service, the local bar association, or a legal aid organization. 2. You have a responsibility to follow the Justice Court Rules of Civil Procedure (“JCRCP”) that apply in your lawsuit. The rules are available in many public libraries, at the courthouse, and online at the Court Rules page of the Arizona Judicial Branch website, at http://www.azcourts.gov/ , under the “AZ Supreme Court” tab. 3. A “plaintiff” is someone who files a lawsuit against a “defendant.” You must file an answer or other response to the plaintiff’s complaint in writing and within twenty (20) days from the date you were served with the summons and complaint (or thirty (30) days if you were served out-of-state.) If you do not file an answer within this time, the plaintiff may ask the court to enter a “default” and a “default judgment” against you. Your answer must state your defenses to the lawsuit. Answer forms are available at the courthouse, and on the Self-Service Center of the Arizona Judicial Branch website at http://www.azcourts.gov/ under the “Public Services” tab. You may prepare your answer electronically at http://www.azturbocourt.gov/ ; this requires payment of an additional fee. You may also prepare your answer on a plain sheet of paper, but your answer must include the court location, the case number and the names of the parties. You must provide to the plaintiff a copy of any document that you file with the court, including your answer. 4. You may bring a claim against the plaintiff if you have one. When you file your answer or written response with the court, you may also file your “counterclaim” against the plaintiff. 5. You must pay a filing fee to the court when you file your answer. If you cannot afford to pay a filing fee, you may apply to the court for a fee waiver or deferral, but you must still file your answer on time. 6. You may contact the plaintiff or the plaintiff’s attorney and try to reach an agreement to settle the lawsuit. However, until an agreement is reached you must still file your answer and participate in the lawsuit. During the lawsuit, the court may require the parties to discuss settlement. 7. Within forty (40) days after your answer has been filed, you and the plaintiff are required to provide a disclosure statement to each other. The disclosure statement provides information about witnesses and exhibits that will be used in the lawsuit. A party may also learn more about the other side’s case through discovery. Read the Justice Court Rules of Civil Procedure for more information about disclosure statements and discovery. 8. The court will notify you of all hearing dates and trial dates. You must appear at the time and place specified in each notice. If you fail to appear at a trial or a hearing, the court may enter a judgment against you.
