Free books for kids at next Second Friday in Superior Autumn is finally here and this is a great time to “fall” in love with a new book- especially when it’s free! The first two “Reading is Cool” Book Fairs were such a success, with well over a thousand books going home with kids of all ages, “We’re going to do it again!” says Superior resident Lauren Figdore Tuthill. During Superior’s Second Friday Event, Oct. 12, from 4-8 p.m., there will be a whole new assortment of hundreds of FREE gently used books for children from preschool through high school age. A limited quantity of books for adults will also be available. Sue Anderson, president of the Superior Chamber of
Commerce, is again happy to donate space at the Chamber Office at 165 Main Street for this free event. Come see “Me Fynn the Mime” read story books to the children. Save Money Market has donated bags in which readers can take home their new treasures. Hilda Cardenas, Site Manager for the Superior Headstart, a sponsor of the Book Fair, will be on hand to help children make appropriate selections. “This book giveaway is a great opportunity for parents and their children to have books without having to spend money,” said Cardenas. “I’m a big advocate of reading to young children. Reading
helps to develop so many skills- vocabulary, creativity, problem-solving, focus and confidence. These skills help set up children for success in school,” she said. “I hope parents take advantage of this free opportunity to build a home library!” Lauren Tuthill has worked at several bookstores during her career and has been an avid reader since her own preschool days. “With so many other distractions it is very important to instill a love of reading early on,” she says. “It is something one can enjoy throughout life. I hope these donated books will be enjoyed by their new owners!”

Ybarra’s ‘Magnificent 7’ leads Superior to win on Homecoming, Senior Night By Andrew Luberda Superior Sun
Superior senior quarterback Steven Ybarra made Homecoming/Senior Night one to remember for himself and his teammates, as he accounted for seven touchdowns in the second-ranked Panthers’ 46 – 6 victory against No. 5 Hayden. Ybarra, who undoubtedly will be named the 1A Player of the Year later this fall, threw for four touchdowns and ran for three more. He completed 12-of-22 passes for 201 yards, connecting with Adam Navarrette, Cedric Mendoza (2) and Jesus Castellanos on the four scoring throws. Mendoza and Castellanos, both seniors, combined to haul in 10 passes for 122 yards. Navarrette, a sophomore, was on the receiving end of a 67-yard touchdown pass. Ybarra also rushed for 126 yards
on 18 carries and contributed to another Panthers’ stifling defensive performance, finishing with a team-high eight tackles, including one of Superior’s nine sacks in the game. “This was a big win for us,” Superior head coach Ryan Palmer said after the game. It was Senior Night, homecoming, a rivalry game, (two top-5 teams) in the state, and for the top standing in the region. Regular season games don’t get much bigger. I am proud of the intensity that we played with.” For the fourth time in six games, the Panthers’ defense held its opponent to six points or fewer. Against the Lobos, Mendoza and Daniel McConnell had seven and six tackles, respectively, including three sacks apiece. Bryan Aguilar and Gabriel Castillo also recorded sacks. Superior had four takeaways in the

game. Mendoza recovered a fumble while Navarrette and Castellanos (2) combined for three interceptions. Clearly, the Panthers benefitted from the bye week. “We are working every day to improve as a team,” Palmer said. “Improving our discipline, both on and off the field, has been a priority. We still have a lot of improvements needed, but we are growing and becoming a better team.” Up next: The Panthers visit No. 10 Ray this Friday. The Bearcats have lost two-
straight in lopsided fashion, including a 56 – 0 loss to Hayden two weeks ago and a 43 – 8 defeat at Arete Prep last week. For Superior, the goal remains the same no matter the opponent. “(Our) players play for each other,” Palmer said. “They want to represent for their alumni, town, and school, but at the end of the day they work their (rear ends) off each day for one another. That brotherhood is what keeps us motivated and focused on achieving our goal. Friday’s kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Steven Ybarra has a stellar night with SEVEN touchdowns credited to him. Phalicitee ‘Pinky’ Thomas | Sun

rom Jeremiah 32:17 – “Ah Lord God! Behold You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and by Your outstretched arm! Nothing is too difficult for You!” We’ve sung that in a chorus at times – nothing is too difficult for our God! He is the Creator – He made the universe and all that it contains. If He can do all that by a spoken word, our problems seem to be so easy in comparison. Do not ignore His power in your life; because He loves us, He is willing to help us in times of great trouble and bless us with times of fantastic victory. Deuteronomy 33:27 tells us it is His everlasting arms that are holding us up. As we move in His authority and power, we are overcomers! The enemy is defeated and we, the sons and daughters of Father God are living in heavenly victory! That is how it is done.
Carlson (83) placing second and Hannah Havens (91) taking third. Lowry combined for a 381 to win comfortably over second place Spring Creek (415). Truckee (426), Fernley (442), and Elko (449) rounded out the top five. In Truckee the Lady Bucks shaved 43 strokes between rounds to win the second Division 3A tournament with a 365 and beating Elko by 10 strokes. This tournament saw Carlson shoot an even-par 72 to place first in the individual race and to help carry the team to another win. Carlson has been the individual champion in three of the
