Sun Life Family Health Center to move Oracle office to new building Oracle, AZ – Sun Life Family Health Center is pleased to announce a change in address for the health center’s Oracle family practice. Starting Monday, Dec. 3, Sun Life’s Oracle office will open their doors at 1040 W. American Avenue (formerly the Family Dollar). In order to relocate to the new office, Sun Life will temporarily close the current office, 1870 W. American

OBITUARY Oralia Sandoval Self Oralia Sandoval Self, known as Lala, was born in Hayden on Nov. 18, 1929 to Felix and Jesus Sandoval. She grew up in San Pedro. She graduated from Hayden High School in 1949. In 1951, she married the love of her life, Orbin Self and moved to El Segundo, California. They were married for 62 years. Oralia died on Aug. 17, 2018 in Torrance, California.

She is survived by her daughters, Olivia Reissig and Oralyn Guerrero Ortiz, eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings, Alfredo, Ralph (Mary Rose), Fernando, Randy (Mary Lou), sisters Hortencia Sanchez, Mary Castillo and her big sister, Betty Bartlett. She was preceded in death by her husband, Orbin, son Gil, parents Felix and Jesus Sandoval, siblings, Frank, Enedina and Carmen. Her memorial service will be held on Nov. 17, 2018 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Hayden. Rosary will be at 9:30 a.m., Mass at 10 a.m., followed by interment at Mountain View Cemetery. Luncheon will follow at the Hayden Club House at the golf course.

Superior, Arizona — (November 10, 2018) Resolution Copper’s demolition contractor has safely and successfully completed the controlled demolition of the Magma Copper smelter’s chimney stack, which was structurally unsound and posed a significant threat to safety. Resolution Copper’s number one priority is ensuring the health and safety of our employees and the community, and finalizing this latest phase of the 15-year reclamation effort is a vital step in fulfilling our commitment to health, safety and environmental stewardship. In addition to proactively addressing the safety threat posed by the crumbling chimney stack, it was also necessary to remove smelter structures in order to clean all contaminants out of the soil that had accumulated during five decades of the Magma Copper Company’s smelting operations, which started in 1924 and ended in 1971. Safe removal and cleanup
of the smelter complex is a major milestone in Resolution Copper’s broader reclamation of the West Plant property adjacent to Superior, which began in 2005 and is on schedule for completion in 2020. “Being a good neighbor is extremely important to Resolution Copper. We are dedicated to making Superior a cleaner and safer place to live and work,” said Andrew Lye, Resolution Copper Project Director. “When the company took over the West Plant property in 2004, restoring the land was a top priority, and the safe removal of the smelter was unfortunately required for us to finish the job. The Town of Superior has been an important partner throughout the reclamation process, and we’ll continue to coordinate our efforts with Superior’s public officials as we move forward.” Superior Mayor, Mila Besich offered the Continued on page 11

The World War I Battle Fought in Arizona
ollowing the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand of AustriaHungary and his wife, Sophie by a Bosnian Serb, tension grew between the countries of Serbia and Austria-Hungary. On July 28, 1914 Austria declared war on Serbia. This would lead to the major powers of Europe joining the conflict which we know as World War I. The United States would not enter the war until 1917 but in Globe, Arizona in 1914, a small battle of sorts would take place with ties to the European War.
In 1914, there were quite a number of immigrants working in the United States. This included miners of many different ethnicities working in the mines in Globe. As the war approached, relationships between Austrian and Serbian workers dwindled. Many of the workers had families back in the old country. There was even talk that if war broke out, many would return to their homelands to fight. When Austria-Hungary invaded Serbia, the tension turned into hostility on July 31. On August 1, 1914 the Bisbee Daily
Review newspaper reported a “Race Clash At Globe”. The article said: “The first clash between Austrians and Serbians occurred tonight, resulting in many broken heads but no serious injuries, trouble is feared as the result of tense feeling between the two nationalities. 500 Austrians have notified their consul in Denver that they are ready to return home for war. 300 Servians are preparing to return to the fatherland.” The book, History of Mining in Arizona, said that the two nationalities “mixed it up in the International Saloon on Broad Street”. Ten days later, again at the same saloon, a bigger battle erupted. This time they fought with fists, billiard sticks, beer bottles, rocks and clubs leaving the saloon in shambles. Forty Serbians and twenty Austrians were involved. The melee must have spilled out into Broad Street as it was reported that a large crowd of Globe citizens watched them fight. The Arizona

K-Town Car Show, Fall Festival set for Saturday in Kearny On Saturday, Nov. 17, Alden Rd. in uptown Kearny is going to be the home of the K-Town Car Show and Fall Festival, with the same fun, games, good company and excitement that was brought to you during last year’s event. They were athletes, students, classmates. And when their country called for their service, they didn’t hesitate. They left their homes and their families behind and were sent to the front lines in Vietnam. It was their lives that the San Manuel High School classes of the ‘50s and ‘60s sought to honor, but they extended the ceremonies to include other Veterans from the Tri-Community, those who served in World War II, Korea, Vietnam and Desert Storm. They honored the Purple Heart Medal recipients and the memories of servicemen who were killed during World War II. The Veterans Day Celebration was held Saturday, Nov. 10, at the San Manuel Elks Lodge. Local VFW Post members Margarito Benjano and Lloyd Bradshaw presented the colors and Frank A. Martinez, another VFW Post member, lead the Pledge of Allegiance. Following the National Anthem, sung by all in attendance, Pastor Emeritis John “Tinker” Roybal offered the opening prayer. Dinner was provided and served by the family of Frank A. Martinez. Alfred Trejo, who served 30 years in the Navy, served as the emcee for the
ceremony, which included a moving candlelight tribute to the Fallen 7, brave young heroes who sacrificed their lives in Vietnam. Following a Native American Prayer, offered by Alberto D. Chavez, another local Veteran, the families and friends of the Fallen 7 were invited to share thoughts about their lives. Darrell Klesch talked about his friend Allen Ingram.
“The Marines were tough guys over there,” Klesch said. “They had it tough.” The Marines were deployed for 13 months at a time. Klesch, who was drafted into the Army, said that his deployment was for 12 months. He said he was heartbroken over his friend’s enlistment in the Marines. Allen enlisted while still in high school. Klesch, who was a few years older, was drafted and arrived in Vietnam just two weeks before Allen was killed.
“Allen was killed in his 13th month,” Klesch said. Klesch said that he sent Allen a letter shortly after his arrival in country promising that he would find him. The letter was returned to him unopened. While it was hard on him, it was devastating to Allen’s parents, Klesch said. “From that moment on, their whole world fell apart. Allen was their only son,” Klesch said. “The sun set and went down in their hearts for Allen.”

‘50s and ‘60s honor the Vietnam 7 Allen was a little more than two months shy of his 19th birthday. Other families spoke about their loved ones too. Stephanie Benetone shared a story about her older brother, Mark Bateman. “When I think of Mark, I don’t think so much about him as a soldier, although I was very proud of him. I think about how much we used to fight when we were growing up until I was about 12 and he was about 14 and then we became friends. I think mostly because he wanted me to listen to him play his guitar and applaud. I was his audience,” she said. “He was getting really good at it.”
One of her favorite stories, she said, was that no one in her family knew he could sing. One night, Stephanie remembered, she went to a school dance at San Manuel High School and was shocked to find her brother playing in the band. “Mark got up and sang Twist and Shout. His voice was so good,” she said. Stephanie went home after the dance and told her mom who was just as shocked. Mark was 20 years old when he was killed. The ceremony ended with a presentation to each of the Veterans in attendance and a thank you to all who served. Continued on page 10

Magma Copper Smelter multimedia exhibition at Boyce Thompson Arboretum; historical display pays tribute to the smelter’s cultural significance In collaboration with Resolution Copper, Boyce Thompson Arboretum is hosting a temporary multimedia exhibition to coincide with the removal of the last buildings and structures of the historic Magma Copper Company smelter at Superior. The 6-month exhibition honors the Magma Copper smelter’s cultural significance as a landmark in the community, its place in Superior’s mining history and the generations of local families connected to it. The exhibition, titled Images to Remember: The
Magma Copper Company Smelter at Superior, consists of large reproductions of historic and recent photographs, a video display, maps and construction drawings of the historic smelter complex. The Tri-Community Food Bank provides monthly food boxes to households in Mammoth, San Manuel and Oracle and the surrounding area. Households must verify that they live in this area and have an income within federal poverty guidelines. The food bank is located at 108 W Redwood Drive in Mammoth. The hours are Monday through Thursday and Saturday from 9 a.m.-noon Call 487-2010formoreinformation.Thefood bank also provides a limited amount of funding for utility and rent assistance through donations, SHARE and the EFSP (FEMA). Households are only eligible once every 12 months and must document a decrease in income or an increase in unexpected expenses.
Lions Club Weekly Bingo The San Pedro Valley Lions Club hosts Bingo every Wednesday night. Bingo starts at 7 p.m., promptly at San Pedro Valley Lions Club, 115 Main St. in Mammoth. As an added incentive, on one of the mid-month game nights, if they get 26-35 players, they will draw one number and the lucky holder will receive their initial purchase price of Bingo cards back; 36-45 players and they draw two numbers; 46 or more they draw three. This does not include additional cards purchased throughout the night. All of the drawings will be held before Intermission.

Los Angeles reported hundreds of Serbians and Austrians fighting in the streets with perhaps two fatalities. In Joliet, Illinois in the large foreign settlement of steel mill workers, a riot broke out. The riot started when several hundred Austrians invaded a meeting of Serbians and jeered the speakers. Fights
broke out with fists and clubs. It spilled into the street and revolvers were drawn and shots fired. World War I was a horrific war. The introduction of mechanized warfare, poison gas and aircraft led to many deaths. Military deaths by battle wounds or disease were 8,500,000. Of those 45,000 were Serbians and 1,200,000 Austrians. I wonder how many of those men fighting in the streets and saloons of Globe returned to their homelands to fight and die on the fields in Europe.
