Interesting Books
M
y bookshelves contain so many books that I had collected for a long time, and most are about western history. I also have a few books that had been autographed and given to my husband and myself by Edward Abbey who has been described as an American author and essayist noted for his advocacy of environmental issues, criticism of public land policies, and anarchist political views. I also have a very interesting letter he had written to us, and a couple of his hand-written notes of a speech he had given. I wouldn’t be surprised if some Edward Abbey fans would like to get hold of these. How we had become acquainted with Edward Abbey is mentioned in my book “A CREEKSIDE STORY - FROM BUCKBOARD DAYS TO ECOTOURISM”. I had also mentioned in my book the author Elizabeth Lambert Wood (no relation) who had once had the Crooked G Ranch at Oracle, Arizona, and I have several of her books. Of course, I like books about Aravaipa Creek in Arizona where I had lived for many years. Emil Kielberg had been an early settler along Aravaipa Creek, and in the December 2013 issue of the monthly “Nugget”, reporter John Hernandez had written an interesting story about Kielberg Canyon in the Galiuro Mountains, and in it he had mentioned the soon-to-be available book “JOURNEY TO ARAVAIPA CANYON” by P.J. Kielberg-McClenahan, a great-granddaughter to Emil Kielberg. I have that book, plus a few books about the tragic Camp Grant Massacre at Aravaipa Creek. Those are “VAST DOMAIN of BLOOD”

et’s get festive! Rip’s NAPA Store and the Copper Basin Chamber of Commerce are sponsoring the annual Fall Festival and Car Show this Saturday, Nov. 18. It will begin at 9 a.m. on Alden Road in Kearny and last into the late afternoon. The car show itself will fill most of the morning hours until the awards ceremonies at noon. So come early, especially if you are a car lover, because some of the show cars will have come from a goodly distance and it takes a while to get home. There will be many other events and activities thorough the day, making it a good event for both adults and children. Be sure to check out the many vendors. Rip and Katie Vache, ever since they took over the NAPA store, have been positive contributors to the Copper Basin, not merely with the car show which is largely their baby, but by building up NAPA’s role as a well-stocked and well-staffed place of business. I heard from Monica Badillo that the benefit golf tournament for Jena Martinez Inzunza was a smashing success. There were 103 golfers in the tournament itself. Monica reports that the funds raised are being counted now, but she knows it was a financial success because of two things: the number of people who took part, and the fact that donations of goods and services left no expenses to be covered. Way to go! I’m glad the weather made a positive donation as well. This week Arizona forestry officials will be meeting with the Winkelman Natural Resources Conservation District during

I’ll be an old curmudgeon and admit that I hate its new name of “Turkey Day” and also its reliance on beer and football. Now that I have that out of the way, I have had a difficult time finding things for which to be thankful. Family, yes. Friends, yes. My faith in God, yes. But it hurts me that so many people in this area are hurting, in so many ways. The Giant stores in San Manuel and Dudleyville are now both closed. Good jobs are hard to find and even harder to get. Filtering Out What’s In the Water
M
unicipal water supplies invariably have contaminants, as do many well systems. Fortunately, most healthy humans are resilient enough to withstand their ill effects. On the other hand, the less energy one needs to expend on “self-filtering” the water they consume, the more energy they’ll have for other life issues. Commercial water filters have been developed to clear out contaminants before they are consumed. We will look at the various contaminants found in our water supplies, the various resources available for testing for these contaminants and some of the many filters offered for home use. Contaminants can be broadly organized into organic and non-organic matter. Organic matter refers to human and animal waste products, decaying plant matter and the ubiquitous bug population that inhabits the earth, some of which can overwhelm an individual’s defense system and contribute to disease. The non-organic matter in our water supplies is much more far reaching. Consider the various toxic minerals that are leached into our water (e.g. arsenic, lead, mercury, uranium, as well as PCB’s and BPA’s from plastic ). Consider the pesticides and gasoline products that find their way into the aquifers we draw our water from. Consider the mass amounts of pharmaceutical drugs, hormones and cleaning products that are flushed into our water supply every day. And, don’t forget the intentional additions of chlorine and
fluoride. How do we find out what’s in the water? If you use a municipal source in your home (city water), the first place to check on its purity is the Consumer Confidence Report, obtained from the water company itself. There are a multitude of independent laboratories that will analyze water samples for various contaminants guided by the specific concerns about the source. You may consider the National Testing Laboratories or Doctor’s Data or even the University as possible testing facilities. It will be easier to choose an appropriate filter if the contaminants have been identified. Some filters are more effective for certain contaminants. Charcoal filters are often a primary consideration, whether alone or in combination with other filters, because of their wide range of filtering qualities. Charcoal can reduce bad tastes and odors, chlorine, toxic metals, parasites, pesticides, radon and other contaminants. It works by its positively charged ions and highly absorbent carbon. The more finely packed the carbon is, the less likely erosion channels will form which deplete its effectiveness. Reverse Osmosis filters are highly effective at removing most contaminants, including uranium which has been tested high in the area. Their drawback is that they are relatively expensive and have a low yield of filtered water compared to the amount of water run through them. As with distillers, Reverse Osmosis ends up with water that has less minerals than optimal. Many people re-introduce
Oracle Piano Society to present Schubert: The Last Four Sonatas The Endicott Players of Boston and Tucson, in association with The Oracle Piano Society, will present the last four piano sonatas of Franz Schubert in concerts on Wednesday, Nov. 15, at 7 p.m. in Tucson’s Grace St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 2331 E Adams St., and Sunday, Nov. 19, at 3 p.m. in the Oracle Center for the Arts, 700 E Kingston St. Endicott Artistic Director and pianist Michael Manning will be joined by guest artist, internationally renowned pianist Eleanor Perrone, in two concerts presenting this staple unit of the Western Canon. minerals before they consume the filtered water. Ultraviolet filters offer a good way to disinfect a water source from bacteria and other microorganisms. Cation exchange filters (softeners) get rid of strong positively charged minerals like calcium and magnesium that can leave deposits in your plumbing and fixtures. These filters may also remove uranium. The simplest form of water filtering is to leave a pitcher of water on the counter for at least a half an hour. This process allows many toxins to be “out-gassed” (evaporated) into the air. Some filters are used at the faucet or directly under the sink. Some filters are used on the entire water supply for a house. Regardless of the model, look for certification by the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF). It gives some assurance that the filter meets an agreed upon standard. It is usually recommended that the filters be changed every six months. Remember: “If you don’t filter, you

Honoring Native American Veterans
By John Hernandez Copper Area News November is Native American Heritage Month. It is a time to celebrate the rich and diverse cultures, traditions, histories and important contributions of Native people. Having just celebrated Veteran’s Day, some native people history about the service to their country by their veterans is appropriate. Native Americans have served with distinction in every war beginning with the Revolutionary War to our current wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. The warrior spirit and their courage that once made them formidable enemies during the Indian Wars has been displayed throughout our country’s history. Native Americans have the highest percentage of any ethnic group in the United States serving in the military. Considering the U.S. government’s treatment of Native Americans throughout its history, broken treaties, banishment to reservations, and genocide, it is hard for one to understand their willingness to fight for a nation that has treated them so dishonorably. Some say it is the Native culture and their prized qualities of strength, honor, pride, wisdom and devotion to the survival of their people, culture, and homeland. They consider themselves part of their tribe and part of America.
During the Revolutionary War native tribes fought on the side of the British as well as the colonists. Tribes also fought for the British as well as the Americans in the War of 1812. They also fought for both sides in the Civil War. In the Plains Indian Wars members of certain tribes fought on the American side against their traditional tribal enemies. During the Apache Wars, many joined the U.S. Army as scouts and fought against their fellow Apaches. Twelve Native Americans were awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor during this time. Teddy Roosevelt recruited Native Americans for his Rough Riders during the Spanish American War. During World War I, although Native People were not yet American citizens, many joined the fight in Europe. A number of them received medals for bravery. Near the end of the war, eight Choctaw warriors took over the field communications in an area surrounded by Germans. They used their native language to send tactical messages to other units which helped defeat the Germans. It was code talking before the famous Navajo Code Talkers of World War II. Fourteen Native American women served in the Army Nurse Corps. Native Americans would become American citizens in 1924. In World War II, Native Americans were eligible for the draft but enlisted in record numbers. Over 40,000 fought in the Pacific and European theaters. Four hundred Code Talkers were deployed with the Marines in the Pacific and these Navajo Code Talkers played an important part in the War. In the European Theater, 17 Comanche Code Talkers saw brutal action as part of the Army Signal Corps. Five Native American soldiers were awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. Following the end of World War II, many Native American Veterans benefitted from the G.I. Bill and furthered their education. A number of them began

In 1947 they successfully led a fight for the right to vote in Arizona and New Mexico. Native Americans fought in Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf War, Iraq and Afghanistan. Fifty thousand Native Americans served in the Vietnam War. Ninety percent of them enlisted. Many disillusioned Native soldiers returned from Vietnam and joined militant civil rights groups such as the American Indian Movement. Some joined with their elders to protect and revitalize their Native culture and land. They continue to fight for their civil rights and their people. In the 1990s, it was estimated that there were 160,000 Native American Veterans. This comprised 10 percent of the Native American population, three times the proportion of non-native people that have served in the military. The Native American has played an important part in the history of the United States military. Let us honor their service and all Veterans.

Admission to the Tucson concert is free, and $30 for the Oracle concert (free for students with ID). Interested persons can obtain more information about this and other programs at: bit.ly/EPerrone and bit.ly/ OPSSchedule. Eleanor Perrone, piano, shows commitment to the music she is playing, conveyed with electric energy and technical audacity. Her solo programming reflects a focus on drawing the audience into the music, introducing them to unfamiliar works and re-introducing them to familiar ones. Writes the Boston Globe, “Perrone is a pianist who makes you listen.” Trained at the Juilliard School and Boston University, she holds a Master of Music degree from Boston University and has studied with Patricia Zander, Anthony di Bonaventura, Bela Boszormenyi-Nagy, and Leonard Eisner. Former piano faculty of the Longy School of Music of Bard College in Cambridge, MA, Perrone also served as Associate Chair and Chair of piano in their Community Programs division from 2005-2010. She is on the piano faculty of the Rivers School Conservatory, Weston MA, and maintains a private studio in Watertown, MA. Michael Manning, piano, has enjoyed an eclectic professional life encompassing academia, print and broadcast journalism and management, scientific research, and software engineering in addition to performance. He’s served on the faculties of Christopher Newport University, Western Kentucky University and Northeastern University, was Broadcast Director of public broadcasting’s flagship WGBH, Music Critic for The Boston Globe, and Producer for National Public Radio, and is
presently a Publications Reviewer for Oxford University Press. A graduate of Yale University’s School of Music, he’s performed and lectured throughout the United States, and has been an established music critic on both coasts. His radio productions have earned the industry’s highest awards, including Gold Medals from the New York International Festivals and Columbia University’s Major Armstrong Award. Mr. Manning holds advanced degrees in Music, Pure Mathematics and Applied Mathematics and has served in executive positions at several prominent technology companies, including IBM and BAE Systems. He currently teaches undergraduate mathematics in Tucson where he lives with his wife, Deborah. In 1987, artist, novelist, and fabled Fantasy publisher Terri Windling formed the Endicott Studio in Boston. Devoted to literary, visual, performing, and environmental arts, the collective was a hotbed of Boston artists contributing to multiple, sometimes original genres within the broad category they described as The Mythic Arts. In 2002, Windling and Tucson author Midori Snyder together with novelists and artist-entrepreneurs Ellen Kushner and Delia Sherman opened the Endicott West Studio in the desert just east of Tucson. Conceived by and for artists with aims akin to those of the Boston studio, Endicott West exists primarily as a residence and retreat for writers, painters, filmmakers, and artists in less conventional media where they can work and play in the rich, aesthetically nourishing desert environment of the Saguaro National Forest. Pianist Michael Manning and his wife moved from Boston to Tucson in 2012 to become caretakers of the studio compound, bringing with them their connections to the rich vein of the Northeast’s classical music community. Conscious that he was adding a strictly classical dimension to EWest, Mr. Manning invited several of Boston’s acclaimed musicians

Continued from page 4 administration is still a fact to deal with in rural Arizona (and not just in copper towns). I do give thanks that the people of Pinal County approved the plan of, and funding for, the Pinal Regional Transportation Authority. This will especially benefit the towns of Superior, Kearny, and Winkelman, even as the urban areas will receive much-needed highways. I give
thanks that the people of the Ray School District passed the bond issue by a 2 to 1 margin, a margin much higher than in the other school districts of Pinal County. Now our towns and the Ray Schools will have access to some much needed funds. The people of this area responded to these real needs with their own tax money. When the need is clear, the response is strong.

to perform under the studio’s aegis, forming The Endicott Players of Boston and Tucson. The studio has since dissolved, but the collaborative spirit survives with the Players, whose annual series of performances occur in multiple cities and bring a drop of refreshment to the culturally dry summer months. Individually and collectively, the Endicott Players are dedicated to performing the acknowledged masterpieces of western classical music mixed with less illustrious though no less lustrous works by their authors, and show a preference for music written since the 18th century. This is not meant as a slight to music of earlier periods (which members of the ensemble frequently perform), but is merely a concession to the practical repertory limits imposed by this particular constellation of artists and the group’s stated goal.

Local needle group sews quilts for Veterans By John Hernandez San Manuel Miner
The San Pedro Valley Needle Group is a group of local ladies that love to sew and help others. The group made 31 quilts for veterans which will be delivered to the V.A. Hospital in Tucson. They have previously donated pillows and mats that they made for animals at the Humane Society and will be working on hats and scarves for people with cerebral palsy. The material come from donations from individuals and the members. The Needle Group is currently made up of ladies from Mammoth and Oracle. The members are: Elaine Ramsey, Darwina Kimmel, Shirley Romo, Maria Martinez, Virginia Gonzalez, Mary Juarez, Carmen Vindiola, Debra McBride, Andi Drake and Chastity Brownrigg. The San Pedro Valley Needle Group invites anyone from the Tri-Community and surrounding areas of the Copper Corridor to join them. They meet every Thursday except holidays from 10 a.m. to noon at the Mammoth Community Center. If you are interested in joining or donating material, call Elaine at (520) 487-2877.
Volunteers with the San Pedro Valley Needle Group display various quilts and afghans that will be given to the VA Hospital. John Hernandez | Miner
Natural Gas Safety Wherever you live, work, or play. natural gas lines can be buried anywhere, even in areas where homes don’t use natural gas. So it’s important that EVERYONE knows how to recognize and respond to a natural gas leak, wherever they are.
A leak may be present if you: SMELL:
HEAR:
SEE:
a distinct sulfur-like odor, similar to rotten eggs, even if it’s faint or momentary.
a hissing or roaring coming from the ground or above-ground piping.
dirt or water blowing into the air, unexplained dead or dying grass or plants, or standing water continuously bubbling.
IF YOU SUSPECT A LEAK • Exit the area or building immediately. Tell others to evacuate and leave doors open. • From a safe place, call 911 and Southwest Gas at 877-860-6020, day or night, whether you’re a customer or not. A Southwest Gas representative will be there as soon as possible. • Don’t smoke or use matches or lighters. • Don’t turn on or off electrical switches, thermostats, or appliance controls; or do anything that could cause a spark. • Don’t start or stop an engine, or use automated (garage) doors.
