include here a couple of stories I had been told about the early days when my husband’s Wood family lived along Aravaipa Creek, and which I failed to add to my book A CREEKSIDE STORYFROM BUCKBOARD DAYS TO ECOTOURISM. One story concerned the Laman family who lived on the Winkelman Flats by the Gila River, and who the Wood family were friends to. Mr. Laman, who was called “Toll” Laman, was the boss of the road crew that worked the road between Winkelman and El Capitan, and besides pick

and shovel work, a scraper that was pulled by two mules was used. Most of the Aravaipa Creek residents in those early years did lots of farming, and had lots of produce to sell. There was one time when the older Wood son, Leslie, was with Joe Buzan, the son of the Woods’ upstream neighbors, as they were hauling fruit to Globe in Joe’s Model T pickup when some part of the truck’s steering broke when they were not far above the turnoff to Christmas and the shipping corrals that were then there. truck ran into a wash and overturned, and both Leslie and Joe were knocked out. Leslie was awakened from the pain in his leg that was caused by the hot water from the truck’s radiator, and when Leslie saw Joe lying there he thought Joe was dead.. They weren’t hurt too badly, but had to walk all the way to Winkelman to get help. I felt so privileged to be able to go through the record book that my husband’s mother, Frankie Belle Wood, had kept. It really showed that the family’s livelihood depended on what farm

produce they could sell, also the cattle, and after buying Angora goats in 1923, they had the goats mohair to sell. It was really

interesting to read who the people were who bought produce from them. Some were who came to their Aravaipa Creek home, but much went to businesses

in various towns. That meant lots of traveling, and they bought a 1937 Chevy pickup in 1937, the year the Aravaipa Creek road above the creek was finished.

CCYS Copperheads dominates at USSSA Veteran’s Salute NIT, now ranked second in the nation By Ted L.. Quinn Special to Copper Area

Copperheads are, from left: Coach John Petty – Russell Long – Rene Ochoa – Kaleb Petty – Nathaniel Meza – Alejandro Lorona – Nicholas Moore – Izak Viallobos – Jayven Salazar – Stratton Palmer – Nicholas Curiel – Andre Hayes – Jacob Barajas – Coach Kevin Ashford - Larenz Combs – Coach Charles Hayes (Not pictured: Coach Danny Long).

Local 13u AA baseball team, the Copperheads, recently competed in the prestigious USSSA Veteran’s Salute National Invitational Tournament held over a 3-day weekend from Nov. 10th through the 12th. The 13u AA division of the tournament had an international flair with 3 of the 16 teams traveling all the way from Canada to participate against the best teams Arizona and her surrounding states had to offer. The coaches for the Copperheads, Charles Hayes, John Petty, Danny Long and Kevin Ashford knew that these young athletes would have to play their best to beat this stacked line up. Well, the boys didn’t disappoint! Starting Pool Play on Friday and continuing through Saturday the Copperheads dominated their 3 games winning by a combined total of 40-15. The highlight of these games was a No-Hitter

thrown by Nick Moore, whose one walk allowed, was the only thing that kept him from throwing a perfect game. Sunday brought Championship Bracket Play, and what the tournament director described as a veritable “Murderer’s row in one of the toughest tournament’s of the year.” Not missing a step, the Copperheads won all 3 games on the way to their biggest championship ever! For the tournament, the team had a .495 batting average, scored 64 runs, and finished with an astounding on base percentage of .548. The incredible performance by these young men earned them a #1 ranking in the state of Arizona, and even more, a #2 ranking in the nation! The team would like to thank the following sponsors for their incredible support: Dream Manor Inn, Dent Crafters, La Casa Builders, Horne Motor Company, Hope Family Care, Mitsi Tax Service, Rodriquez Roofing, Dominion Continued on page 6

resident John F. Kennedy was assassinated on Nov. 22, 1963. Tomorrow is Thanksgiving Day. Fifty-four years have passed between them, 54 years much unknown to the younger people amongst us, but 54 very important and impressionable years to anyone who remembers the day of Kennedy’s death. It was not a mere momentary grief for us then. The following weeks spelled out a full panoply of grief, marked by the stolid face of Jackie Kennedy and the simple ceremony of the horse-drawn casket being borne through the streets of Washington to the cadence of muffled drums. The arrest of Lee Harvey Oswald shortly after he killed Officer J. D. Tippett of the Dallas Police Department, and Oswald’s own death at the hands of Jack Ruby, unsettled the nation. Yet the presidency had passed constitutionally and peacefully to Lyndon B. Johnson as Jack Kennedy’s wife, still wearing his blood on her dress, stood witness. There were many dark moments in ensuring years. The deaths of The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy, the tragedy

Public Notice NOTICE OF AVAILABILITY DRAFT RAY LAND EXCHANGE / PLAN AMENDMENT SUPPLEMENTAL ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Gila District, Tucson Field Office, announces the availability of the Draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Ray Land Exchange / Plan Amendment and by this notice is announcing its availability and opening of the comment period. BLM prepared this Draft Supplemental EIS to analyze a proposed land exchange with ASARCO LLC, a mining company, which would exchange 10,976 acres of BLM managed federal land (Selected Lands) near or adjacent to the Ray Mine Complex and Copper Butte properties operated by ASARCO near Kearny, Arizona in Pinal and Gila Counties. The BLM would acquire 7,304 acres in exchange on 18 parcels (Offered Lands) in Pinal and Mohave Counties. The original Ray Land Exchange Final EIS was issued by the BLM in 1999, and was approved on April 27, 2000. After 10 years of appeals and legal challenges, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals held that a major premise of the environmental impact analysis contained in the 1999 Final EIS was flawed. The Supplemental EIS is being put forth to satisfy the court opinion on a “with or without” analysis of public lands subject to the BLM’s surface use regulations at 43 CFR 3809. The “with and without” analysis compares two scenarios of potential environmental impacts on the Selected Lands from mining operations. One scenario analyzes potential impacts that could occur as a result of mining activities on the Selected Lands if they are not exchanged and remain under BLM jurisdiction (i.e., mining occurs with BLM regulations). The other scenario analyzes potential impacts that could occur as a result of mining activities if the Selected Lands are exchanged and become privately owned lands (i.e., mining occurs without BLM regulations). The Draft Supplemental EIS also addresses any substantial changes in the land exchange or plan amendments and any significant new information or circumstances that are relevant to analyzing the impacts of the land exchange or plan amendments. Copies of the Ray Land Exchange / Plan Amendment Draft Supplemental EIS are available in the Arizona State Office of the BLM at One North Central Avenue, Suite 800, Phoenix, AZ 85004-4427; the BLM Tucson Field Office at 3201 East Universal Way, Tucson, AZ 85756; the BLM Kingman Field Office at 2755 Mission Boulevard, Kingman, AZ 86401; and the Kearny Public Library at 912-A Tilbury Road, Kearny, AZ 85137. Electronic copies of the Draft Supplemental EIS are available for download at the website http://go.usa.gov/xn2FG. The BLM has scheduled a series of open house public meeting at which the public can learn more about the project. The meetings will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. with a presentation at 5:30 p.m.at the following locations: January 16, 2018 Ray School Auditorium, 701 N. Bonita Ave., Tucson, AZ January 23, 2018 Mohave Community College, Neal Campus Room 240, 1971 Jagerson Ave., Kingman, AZ You may submit comments related to the Ray Land Exchange / Plan Amendment draft Supplemental EIS by any of the following methods: by email to blm_az_ raylandexchange@blm.gov; in person via court reporter at the public meetings listed above; by fax to 602-417-9454; or by mail to BLM Arizona State Office, Attn: Ray Land Exchange, One North Central Avenue, Suite 800, Phoenix, AZ 85004-4427. To ensure comments will be considered, the BLM must receive written comments within 90 days following the date of publication in the Federal Register. The 90-day public comment period on the Ray Land Exchange / Plan Amendment Draft Supplemental EIS will run from November 17, 2017 through February 16, 2018. To ensure comments will be considered, the BLM must receive written comments prior to the close of the comment period. Before including your address, phone number, email address, or other personal identifying information in your comment, you should be aware that your entire comment – including your personal identifying information – may be made publicly available at any time. Local area volleyball players earn AIA All-Region Honors Superior AIA 1A East Region 1st Team – Lindsay Ketron. AIA 1A East Region Honorable Mention – Kiki Arriola and Yuvithzia Romero. Ray AIA 1A East Region 2nd Team – Shelby Yocum

The recent conclusion of the volleyball season means a myriad of media outlets will be honoring players for their performances this year. The increasing success of the volleyball teams in and around the Copper Corridor area has resulted in more recognition for local players.

The Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) is the first to release postseason honors, naming All-Region teams in each of the six divisions. The following is a list of players, by team, who received recognition for their performance:

digital age has made us only too aware of the threats around us. Almost 400 years ago a group of people seeking a new life settled in what now know as Massachusetts. It took a long time for them to form a stable community, because sickness and famine took the life of many of them. They formed an uneasy relationship with the historic American people, and the relationship was often marked with death and violence and theft of the native territories. It was not a pretty picture at all. But light stands in contrast to darkness.

Arsenic testing update for Hayden/Winkelman area

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry was in Hayden and Winkelman on Oct. 25 – 28. ATSDR visited all the households who participated in arsenic testing in 2015 to offer arsenic retesting. ATSDR made many attempts, even calling on the head of households and were unable to contact the participants from the 2015 study. They also provided updates to Mayor Bracamonte of Winkelman, Mayor Bobby

Smith of Hayden and HWUSD School Superintendent Gregorich. ATSDR did collect urine samples from residents of 13 households for the urine arsenic retest. A laboratory at the Centers for Disease Control will be testing the samples and they will mail results letters directly to individuals. Officials at ATSDR have explained that they plan to develop and release a report of the community data. The Hayden-Winkelman School

District provided a location for the urine testing to take place. During their interaction with families, ATSDR also shared information from the Central Arizona Governments (CAG) about a lead paint abatement project and provided contact information for interested residents. More information on ATSDR’s 2015 investigation is available on our website at: https://www.atsdr.cdc. gov/sites/hwaz/index.html

Asarco employees team up for softball and St. Vincent de Paul

The second annual St. Vincent de Paul Softball Tournament and Food Drive was deemed a huge success. Last week, the four-team, one-night tournament collected more than 250 cans

and non-perishable food items. In softball action, Electric/S&D beat SX 17-8 to win the tournament! Special thanks to Ray Mine, Union and Town of Kearny for coming together to

support this cause. Please keep an eye for Toys for Tots Tournament in December.

The winners of the second annual St. Vincent de Paul Softball Tournament. Below are the bags of food collected.
