resident John F. Kennedy was assassinated on Nov. 22, 1963. Tomorrow is Thanksgiving Day. Fiftyfour years have passed between them, 54 years much unknown to the younger people amongst us, but 54 very important and impressionable years to anyone who remembers the day of Kennedy’s death. It was not a mere momentary grief for us then. The following weeks spelled out a full panoply of grief, marked by the stolid face of Jackie Kennedy and the simple ceremony of the horse-drawn casket being borne through the streets of Washington to the cadence of muffled drums. The arrest of Lee Harvey Oswald shortly after he killed Officer J. D. Tippett of the Dallas Police Department, and Oswald’s own death at the hands of Jack Ruby, unsettled the nation. Yet the presidency had passed constitutionally and peacefully to Lyndon B. Johnson as Jack Kennedy’s wife, still wearing his blood on her dress, stood witness. There were many dark moments in ensuring years. The deaths of The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy, the tragedy of the war in Viet Nam, the struggles, often descending into violence, of the civil rights movement and, of course, the attacks of Sept. 11 and the wars resulting after that have made us a nation seeking not only redress but relief. We tire of the deaths and injuries, and our digital age has made us only too aware of the threats around us. Almost 400 years ago a group of people seeking a new life settled in what now know as Massachusetts. It took a long time for them to form a stable community, because sickness and famine took the life of many of them. They formed an uneasy relationship with the historic American

people, and the relationship was often marked with death and violence and theft of the native territories. It was not a pretty picture at all. But light stands in contrast to darkness. Those early settlers survived with the help of the natives with whom they first had violent contact. The colony made its way into new days, and other arrivals made Massachusetts a thriving place. They took time to give thanks to God for their lives and to ask for reconciliation and forgiveness. Tomorrow we do the same. In a totally different direction, this past weekend’s Car Show and Fall Festival sponsored by the NAPA Store and the Copper Basin Chamber of Commerce exceeded expectations. There were 100 cars exhibited and there was a full round of vendors of food and merchandise. Putting it all together took some doing, for the Director of Continued on page 9

Thanks for showing the love to the San Manuel tennis courts We have been enjoying tennis on the San Manuel tennis courts for several years. Sure, they’re a little worse for wear having been constructed in the 1970’s, but the location, scenery and quietude make these courts a pleasure to play on. Just last week we noted that new nets had been installed. This was such a a nice surprise we wanted to write and express our appreciation to whoever was responsible. These courts are free and open to the public year round. Thank you San Manuel for your hospitality! /s/ Kaz and Frank Pierson Oracle, AZ

Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Our ‘See-saw Pathway to Misery’ Thanksgiving is the U.S.’s second-favorite holiday, yet it must win the low-stress award compared to our commercialized Christmas, which ranks #1. A day spent with family, expressions of gratitude before a home-cooked meal, and a stroll outside help us slow down and really live. Add dessert and a nap and you have pursued, and most-likely found, happiness. Contrast this to a mall scene the next day, when Black Friday shoppers elbow
for entry to a store, then fight for the buy-of-the-moment. This search and find mode, amped-up by advertising, creates an energized, aggressive and even competitive attitude. When we finally grab that must-have purchase, we are flooded with pleasure, usually short-lived. Pleasure and happiness are distinct conditions, and are native and needed parts of us, each with its own hormone pathway in the brain. Pleasure ties to accomplished goals, typically sought for
Local area volleyball players earn AIA All-Region Honors By Andrew Luberda Copper Area News
The recent conclusion of the volleyball season means a myriad of media outlets will be honoring players for their performances this year. The increasing success of the volleyball teams in and around the Copper Corridor area has resulted in more recognition for local players. The Arizona Interscholastic Association

The following is a list of players, by team, who received recognition for their performance: San Manuel AIA 2A South 2nd Team – Samantha Roan. Superior AIA 1A East Region 1st Team – Lindsay Ketron.

both survival and satisfaction. This is driven by the hormone dopamine, which rallies us to run the race, and once we “win“, the pleasure we feel comes from our own brain-made Oxycontin-like happy chemicals. The trouble is, the buzz of cheap thrills don’t last when divorced from real happiness, which is driven by serotonin in a completely different pathway. We then miss the excitement that the search and find mission gave us, so we repeat the cycle. Even bigger trouble is, when a hormone hangs around too long, cells no longer respond to it as well, less happy chemicals are made and another “toy” must be sought. This tolerance and addiction cycle is our pathway to misery. Dr. Robert Lustig, M.D. details these ideas in The Hacking of the American Mind, and shows how corporate marketers purposely confuse pleasure and happiness and target the seek/find/tolerance/ addiction path to cause us to “need” and consume more of what they are selling. He describes an elegant and easy road out, and, as high-tech science is showing more and more, low tech lifestyle additions are the answer. He calls these the 4 C’s:

Oracle Fire Department Update: A Promotion and a New Firefighter Captain Paul Farrell was recognized at the most recent Oracle Fire District Fire Board meeting for obtaining the level of Engine Boss. This is prestigious certification that takes many years of hard work both in the classroom as well as on wildfire assignments. A “task book” is started very early in one’s career, and, little by little, significant accomplishments are achieved, signed off, and intermediate levels are assigned until finally, every objective in the task book is completed. At that point, the book goes in front of a “Red Card Committee” at the Arizona State Forester’s Office. It is this committee which determines whether the designation of Engine Boss should be awarded. Captain Farrell received this official title this month. As an Engine Boss, Captain Farrell can lead a wildland fire engine out on
assignments, either here in the Oracle Fire District, throughout Arizona or elsewhere in the United States. Thank you, Captain Farrell, for your hard work and dedication to your profession and to Oracle Fire District! And, special thanks to Martha, David, and Patrick Farrell for the huge sacrifice of your husband and father during these lengthy and dangerous assignments. Welcome, Firefighter David Selby, to the full-time rank at Oracle Fire District. Firefighter Selby was hired as a “Reserve Firefighter” in 2015, and after passing a lengthy testing and interviewing period, was hired full-time this July. Thank you Firefighter Selby, for your hard work and dedication to the community of Oracle, the State of Arizona, and the United States of America.

San Pedro Valley Lions celebrate 70 years of caring and giving By John Hernandez San Manuel Miner On Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2017, the San Pedro Valley Lions Club celebrated its 70th year in existence in Mammoth. They received their charter in 1947. It was Bingo Night and the Lions provided door prizes and gave away six
turkeys for Thanksgiving. The San Pedro Valley Lions originally formed in 1942 in what was known as the Mammoth – Tiger District which included the towns of Mammoth, Tiger and Oracle. The Florence Lions Club helped organize the San Pedro Valley Lions beginning in October of 1941. On Jan. 23, 1942, they officially received their charter.
Some of the San Pedro Valley Lions Club members celebrate the club’s 70th anniversary. John Hernandez | Miner
G. Kirkguard was elected President and Waldo B. Christy was Secretary. In January of 1942, Christy would be appointed the Casa Grande District Governor. Unfortunately for the San Pedro Valley Lions the timing couldn’t have been worse. The Japanese had bombed Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941 and America had gone to war. The San Pedro Valley Lions were disbanded in 1942 as many of the members were drafted or enlisted in the military. Other small-town Lions clubs were also disbanded at this time. On Nov. 21, 1947 the new San Pedro Valley Lions Club was chartered. The President was John J. Bugg; 1st VicePresident, J.E. Snodgrass; 2nd VicePresident, R.M. Ramsay; Secretary, Chris Kunde; Treasurer, David E. Durney. There were 48 original members. Over the past 70 years, the San Pedro Valley Lions Club has supported the community and other with their many programs which have included: Annual Medical Eye Unit; purchases of eye glasses and exams, scholarships for high school seniors; sponsored Little League and softball teams, Mammoth Elementary
school supplies; July 4th Swimmers Party; Lions State Projects; support the TriCommunity Food Bank; Leo Club; Ralph C. Herrera Shooting Range; Annual Quail Hunters Breakfast and many more. Although the club membership has dwindled, these wonderful volunteers continue to support the community. Thank you San Pedro Valley Lions Club for 70 years of service to others!

Continued from page 2 the Chamber, Kellie Towne, had submitted her personal resignation in the midst of the planning. The Chamber rolled off its planning success from October’s Halloween events and work with various area people to keep up the high standard for local events. I won’t name names, because there are so many, but everyone who helped out deserves our appreciation. By the way, this is a good time (especially if you are a business person) to join the Chamber, which represents the whole Copper Basin. Speak with the President of the Board, Ginger Chester, to learn more about the Chamber’s work. The Town of Kearny is working with a contractor to provide an insurance program on water pipes from town meters into homes and businesses. The town is responsible for repairs on pipes leading up to, and including, the water meters. Property owners are responsible for the rest, and some of the plumbing is fifty or more years old. Call Kearny Town Hall (520-363-5547) and ask for information about the program.
Public Notice NOTICE OF AVAILABILITY DRAFT RAY LAND EXCHANGE / PLAN AMENDMENT SUPPLEMENTAL ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Gila District, Tucson Field Office, announces the availability of the Draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Ray Land Exchange / Plan Amendment and by this notice is announcing its availability and opening of the comment period. BLM prepared this Draft Supplemental EIS to analyze a proposed land exchange with ASARCO LLC, a mining company, which would exchange 10,976 acres of BLM managed federal land (Selected Lands) near or adjacent to the Ray Mine Complex and Copper Butte properties operated by ASARCO near Kearny, Arizona in Pinal and Gila Counties. The BLM would acquire 7,304 acres in exchange on 18 parcels (Offered Lands) in Pinal and Mohave Counties. The original Ray Land Exchange Final EIS was issued by the BLM in 1999, and was approved on April 27, 2000. After 10 years of appeals and legal challenges, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals held that a major premise of the environmental impact analysis contained in the 1999 Final EIS was flawed. The Supplemental EIS is being put forth to satisfy the court opinion on a “with or without” analysis of public lands subject to the BLM’s surface use regulations at 43 CFR 3809. The “with and without” analysis compares two scenarios of potential environmental impacts on the Selected Lands from mining operations. One scenario analyzes potential impacts that could occur as a result of mining activities on the Selected Lands if they are not exchanged and remain under BLM jurisdiction (i.e., mining occurs with BLM regulations). The other scenario analyzes potential impacts that could occur as a result of mining activities if the Selected Lands are exchanged and become privately owned lands (i.e., mining occurs without BLM regulations). The Draft Supplemental EIS also addresses any substantial changes in the land exchange or plan amendments and any significant new information or circumstances that are relevant to analyzing the impacts of the land exchange or plan amendments. Copies of the Ray Land Exchange / Plan Amendment Draft Supplemental EIS are available in the Arizona State Office of the BLM at One North Central Avenue, Suite 800, Phoenix, AZ 85004-4427; the BLM Tucson Field Office at 3201 East Universal Way, Tucson, AZ 85756; the BLM Kingman Field Office at 2755 Mission Boulevard, Kingman, AZ 86401; and the Kearny Public Library at 912-A Tilbury Road, Kearny, AZ 85137. Electronic copies of the Draft Supplemental EIS are available for download at the website http://go.usa.gov/xn2FG. The BLM has scheduled a series of open house public meeting at which the public can learn more about the project. The meetings will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. with a presentation at 5:30 p.m.at the following locations: January 16, 2018 Ray School Auditorium, 701 N. Hwy 177, Kearny, AZ January 17, 2018 Southeast Regional Library, 775 N. Greenfield Road, Gilbert, AZ January 18, 2018 Pima Community College, Community Rooms A109 and A112, 401 N. Bonita Ave., Tucson, AZ January 23, 2018 Mohave Community College, Neal Campus Room 240, 1971 Jagerson Ave., Kingman, AZ You may submit comments related to the Ray Land Exchange / Plan Amendment draft Supplemental EIS by any of the following methods: by email to blm_az_ raylandexchange@blm.gov; in person via court reporter at the public meetings listed above; by fax to 602-417-9454; or by mail to BLM Arizona State Office, Attn: Ray Land Exchange, One North Central Avenue, Suite 800, Phoenix, AZ 85004-4427. To ensure comments will be considered, the BLM must receive written comments within 90 days following the date of publication in the Federal Register. The 90-day public comment period on the Ray Land Exchange / Plan Amendment Draft Supplemental EIS will run from November 17, 2017 through February 16, 2018. Local artists converge for special Holiday Art Market in Oracle The Holiday Art Market is opening once again in Oracle for a limited time — Nov. 15 to Dec. 23. The gallery will showcase the work of 13 local artisans, each with a distinct style and medium. If you have been asking yourself what you were going to give as gifts this year that is personal and will be treasured a lifetime, this is your opportunity to discover some real finds! Easy to locate, the Market is at The Art Station, 1395 W. American Ave., Oracle (next to the Fire Station). There are items for every budget and the range of work includes paintings, ceramics, jewelry, knitwear, and sculpture. There are items for the home, the garden, and wearable art. Open Wednesdays through Sundays, hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., except Saturdays when the Holiday Art Market will stay open until 7 p.m. The artists represented at the Holiday Art Market understand that original art has unequivocally positive effects for those who own it. Simply put, it makes life more livable. Just think of an empty wall and then one with art that is not only visually appealing, but also radiates the creativity, insight, inspiration and technical mastery of the artisan who created it. People who own art are not only able to experience, but also be inspired and uplifted by the qualities they connect to in the art they
choose. Artists at the gallery include Sue Armburst, Carolyn Blair, Alicia Bristow, Suzie Daigneault, Sharon Holnback, Jenny Kilb, Karen A. Medley, Theresa Poalucci, Laurel Roth, Margy Smith, Laura Stilstner, Susan Swanson, and Judith Walsh. All of the above artists will tell you that there is an “art” to buying art. It does not have to be unattainable because of price. Think local, buy local and you have a great chance of making an investment in something you love and can enjoy a lifetime — without breaking the bank. Further, giving a piece of art is a much more personal statement about your appreciation of the person you are buying the gift for. After all, if you connect to a piece of art and it means something to you, it will certainly resonant with your loved one or friend. For those who are interested in meeting the artists, the public is invited to a reception on Friday, Dec. 8, from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. with plenty of food and drink. Visitors can discuss the inspiration for a piece of art with the artists themselves, some of which also offer opportunities to order custom work. To take an advance look at the artists and their work, or for directions to the Holiday Art Market, visit the website at holidayartsmarket. com.
