OBITUARIES Ana Victoria Flores Meza Ana Victoria Flores Meza went peacefully to be with our lord on Thursday, Nov. 15, 2018. She was 68 years old.

Ana was born in Ray, AZ to Reynaldo L. Flores and Julia Santos Flores on March 21, 1950. Ana attended school at Hayden-Winkelman School District until her sophomore year of high school. She then transferred to Ray High School. In school she excelled in basketball and volleyball.

She also teamed up with best friend Patsy Pacheco and won the 2A State Title in badminton doubles. She graduated from Ray in 1968.

After high school, Ana attended Arizona Medical and Dental Assistant College in Phoenix Arizona. She graduated in December of 1968 and began her career with Bennett, Bennett, and Toon Dental Office in Tucson, AZ. When she decided to move back to Dudleyville, she worked with Dr. Gilmocker, Dr. Fred Weyh, Dr Samsill, and Dr Vanessa Powell at CCA in Florence. She retired after 36 years.

She was loved by many; the patients, nurses and doctors at Haven of Globe and Gilbert Mercy Dignity Hospital, as well as the friends and loved ones in the local community.

“She always had a smile and kind words to all who knew her. She will be greatly missed.”

God had plans for her. She passed peacefully in the afternoon of Nov. 15, 2018 at Gilbert Mercy Dignity Hospital after a long illness. She was surrounded by her loving husband Bill and sons, along with other relatives and friends.

Ana is preceded in death by her mother Julia, father Reynaldo, and brother Reynaldo, Jr. She leaves behind her husband Bill, sons Billy Rey, Bobby (Lisa), and Joseph. She also leaves behind her sister Viola, brother Jimmy (Rosalie), granddaughters Marisa, Julie, Jasmine, Megan and Tara, Grandsons

Claudean “Deana” Lease of Apache Junction Arizona passed away peacefully at home on Nov. 1, 2018 surrounded by her family. She was 72 years old.

She was born on Sept. 7, 1946 in Hot Springs, Arkansas to loving parents, Claude and Vangie Sutton.

When she and her parents moved to Arizona, she met the love of her life Dennis Lease. The two married September of 1963 in Florence, Arizona. She was his beautiful wife of 55 years. They moved to Hayden, Arizona and later moved to Kearny, Arizona. The couple eventually relocated to Apache Junction in the 90’s.

She worked at Bashas’ for several years in the bakery department. She enjoyed cooking, crocheting, sewing, playing bingo and loved spending time with family and friends. She

will be greatly missed by all of her family.

She is survived by her husband Dennis, son Christian, daughters Kimberly, Karen, Kelly and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind brothers Lee, Clyde, Claude, Rocky and sisters Jeanette, Kathy, Nina.

The family would like to express their gratitude to Hospice at Home of Arizona staff for the comfort and care they provided to Claudean and her family.

The family has planned private services. Donations can be made in her honor to The American Cancer Society.

Trevlene May Montgomery, born Dec. 7 during the blizzard of 1934 in Shamrock, Texas, was a blessing to her parents, James and Ula Montgomery.

Trevy, as she was known, is preceded in death by her husband Henry Foor Sr. and daughter Tina Holt. Trevy is survived by her children Beverly Campbell of Altoona, PA., Terry Aden and Tracy Francisco of Apache Junction, AZ., Tami Foor of Stanfield, AZ. and her son, Henry Foor Jr. of Birmingham, AL. Trevy leaves a legacy of many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Trevy is also survived by siblings Robert Montgomery, Doris Miller and Susan Montgomery.

Trevy knew at an early age that she wanted to be a mother. In 1953 Trevy met her our father, Henry “Hank” Foor in Superior, Arizona. Trevy and Hank were married in 1955 to start a family and to make her dreams come true of building a legacy of a loving God-centered family.

Trevy spent most of her life as a homemaker and worked as an EMT for a few years because of her passion to help others.

Trevy served God as a Sunday school teacher and even took on the chore of cleaning the church our family attended. In Trevy’s

retirement years she loved making quilts, painting, jewelry making and sewing clothes for children.

Trevy dedicated her life to God at a young age and had a deep passion to be a humble servant of God and His word. Trevy ministered to all who would listen and made every effort possible to transport as many children to service each week that wanted to go. Her life was as a servant to God and she was grateful for the opportunity to lead people to Christ. Trevy left this earth on Nov. 23, 2018 passing her torch to all of us to continue God’s works.

The Ray Unified School District Governing Board has a vacancy which will be filled by Pinal County Superintendent of Schools Jill Broussard.

Horizon Health and Wellness CEO retires

Horizon Health and Wellness announced today the retirement of its CEO, Norman E. Mudd, effective Dec. 31, 2018.

A farewell dinner and tribute will take place on Dec. 3 to honor a man who dedicated 30 years of his life to develop an agency which went through various changes, names and mergers. Originally Behavioral Health Agency of Central Arizona, Mudd, at the time a therapist and Coordinator, was appointed by the Board of Directors as Chief Executive Officer to try to save an organization in crisis. Mudd successfully brought the agency through bankruptcy and championed changing the name of the agency

to Horizon Human Services. After many years of improvement, growth and establishing stability, the Board of Directors again brought to him the new challenge to assist Superstition Mountain Mental Health Center which was in crisis. The subsequent merger gave birth to a new and larger organization, Horizon Health and Wellness, which has received the Joint Commission’s certification as an integrated health facility. Hayden High School Cleaning up the Veterans Memorial releases first quarter honor roll

Hayden High School has announced its Honor Roll for the first quarter of the 2018-2019 school year.

Miley Chester mails the first letter to Santa in Kearny Miley Chester was first this year to mail her holiday wishes to Santa Claus.

The six-year-old writes: “Dear Santa I have been a very good girl this year I’m so excited for Christmas.

I would like a scooter and a helmet. The scooter will be pink. I would also like a hatchimal. Merry Chrismes, Santa. Love Miley.”

Miley is the daughter of Mark and Brandy Chester of Kearny and attends school at Ray Primary School.

Copper Basin children can mail their wishes to Santa in the two special mailboxes in the area: at the Hayden Library and in front of the Copper Basin News office in Kearny.

Santa has also set up a special email address if you want to send your wishes to him electronically. The email address is santa@ minersunbasin.com.

This year, Mr. Claus has given us permission to accept letters through our Facebook page (www.Facebook.com/ CopperArea). Just send us a message (PM) with your child’s letter to Santa.

Please be sure to include the town where you live so we can publish it in the right newspaper.

Hurry and get your letters in quickly so they can be forwarded to the North Pole in plenty of time for the big day. The deadline to mail letters in Santa’s special mailbox is Dec. 14. Santa needs time to get all the requests fulfilled.

Letters will be published on Dec. 19.

Electric light parade, winter festival Saturday in the Copper Basin Are you ready for “Sweater Weather?” There are only three days until the Electric Light Parade Saturday, Dec. 1. Are your lights in working order and are the batteries charged?

The parade line up is at the area by the Teen Center with smaller floats lining up in front of Kearny Town Hall and larger floats will line up on Jamestown starting at 5 p.m. with the parade starting at 6 and ending at the GKI. Since it is dark at 5 p.m. it is hard to have to write last minute notes for the MC, therefore it is important to have a legible script ready at parade lineup.

Uptown on Alden there will be vendors with their homemade items which make great gifts. There is no charge for the parade entries nor for the vendors. Just

let Ginger know at the Chamber office for vendor space.

Alden Rd. will be closed until 10 p.m. between the Bank and Ace Hardware as soon as the parade ends so the children will be safe as they rush to visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus.

The Copper Basin Chamber of Commerce has many family friendly activities planned for Saturday night.

The Kearny Police and Fire will host a family friendly holiday movie in the Kearny Fire Station. There will also be a jumping castle and a fire pit so kids (and grownups) can roast marshmallows. There will also be a gingerbread house decorating contest and other family friendly fun stuff.

So dig out those sweaters (ugly or otherwise) and get into the spirit of the holidays.

The Hand Me Up Shop is looking for volunteers! Do you have 5 hours on Tuesdays or Wednesdays that you could spend giving back to the community?

The Kearny Public Library would like to thank all the people and businesses who sent in money during the recent donation drive. Thanks to your generous support they will sponsor the annual Christmas Decorating Contest (under the Kearny Library instead of the Friends of the Library). Judging will be Dec. 14. First, second and third places will be awarded and the winners will be announced in the Dec. 19 Copper Basin News.

Superior-Kearny Justice Court The Superior-Kearny Justice Court and the Superior Municipal Court will be moving to 355 Alden Rd to the Kelly Haddad Justice Center in Kearny, beginning May 21, while the building located at 60 E. Main St in Superior is being renovated.

The renovation is scheduled to be completed by the end of February and then we will be relocating back to the Superior location. During that time anyone that needs the services of the Superior-Kearny Justice Court and the Superior Municipal Court will need to go to the Kearny location.

15 Santa Suit for Rent

The Kearny Library has a complete Santa suit for rent in December. The suit can be rented for a 24-hour period. Cost is $25 rent with a $25 deposit, refunded when the suit and all accessories are returned in good condition. Accessories include: beard, hair, hairnet, glasses, gloves, shoe covers, bell and belt. Any damage or repairs should be reported to the Library.

The Kearny Library will sell homemade hot chocolate and cookies in front of the Library before and during the Light Parade, beginning at 5 p.m. and ending after the parade or when the cookies and hot chocolate run out.

Golf Tournament in Hayden

Hayden Golf Club Fundraising Tournament on Saturday, Dec. 15 is open to everyone. It will be played in 3-Man Scramble format at the Hayden Golf Club in Hayden with a 9 a.m. shotgun start. Cost is $40 per player. Carts are limited so RSVP ASAP to reserve one. Special events are Longest Drive, Closest to Pin, Skins, Longest Putt and Money Hole.

Eagle One Veteran Outreach to Visit

The Eagle One Veteran Outreach Center will be at the VFW in Superior on Thursday, Dec. 20, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Visit them online at hohp4heroes.org. Eagle One provides veterans a place to learn about and apply for all services available to them.

KEARNY ELKS LODGE # 2478: Kearny Elks Lodge # 2478 meetings are held the first and third Tuesdays of the month at 7 p.m. The lounge’s schedule is Monday, Wednesday and Friday 5 – 8 p.m. and Sunday 3-9 p.m.

HAYDEN SENIOR CENTER: The Hayden Senior Center,520 Velasco Ave., is open every weekday, from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m., to serve the needs of senior citizens and low-income families. A warm,nutritious lunch is served every day. Call 520356-7035 for information or to check on the daily meal.

KEARNY SENIOR CITIZENS: The Kearny Senior Citizens group meets every Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Constitution Hall. The group talks about trips to different places in Arizona as well as other subjects. A potluck dinner is held after the social hour on the last Wednesday of the month.

New members are needed. Come down and join the group.

From May through August, the group meets only on the last Wednesday of the month.

Arizona Trail hiker aiming to set record Recently, Kearny community leaders Carol and Sam Hosler hosted adventurer Art “Karts” Huseonica who is attempting to set an Arizona Trail record.

Huseonica is hiking south on the Arizona Trail after having thru-hiked the trail earlier this year from Mexico to

Utah. If successful, at age 67, he will be the oldest hiker to yo-yo the trail.

“Completing the round-trip hike in one year has only been accomplished by two other hikers, a couple in their twenties,” said Huseonica. “To set a record for senior citizen hikers will be my most

When Huseonica received the invitation, he didn’t hesitate to respond positively. “I loved my first to Kearny earlier this year,” he said. “I hope to return many more times after this, but probably by car.”

Huseonica recently filmed an adventure show with Bear Grylls, has set a solo, double-traverse record of Death Valley, and was a member of a modern era record-setting 4,200 mile expedition on the Amazon River. He lives in Sun City with his wife Karen Carlsen Huseonica.

AJ Lopez competes in IM Xtreme Games

USA Swimming held the IM Xtreme Games in Mesa, Arizona at the Kino Aquatic Center Nov. 16-18.

To qualify, swimmers in the Western Region of the USA (10 States from New Mexico to Alaska) had to achieve an IMX score of 1500 points or more in the preceding 18 months. An IMX score is obtained when a swimmer swims each of the IMX events. The events include a 200 of each stroke (Butterfly, Backstroke and Breaststroke), the 200 Individual Medley (IM), the 400 IM, and the 500 Freestyle. A score is assigned based on the time for each event and age of the swimmer. The scores from each event are then added together to obtain the IMX Score (similar to the Decathlon in Track).

It is a big achievement to complete all the IMX events and a momentous achievement for any swimmer who earns an IMX score of 1500 and qualifies for the IMX Meet. Six Sea Lions swimmers qualified for the meet but due to illness, only four competed. All four of the Sea Lions swimmers achieved top 16 overall finishes in their respective ages and were awarded plaques.

AJ Lopez finished in 15th place in the 15 year old Boys Division. Swimming in his second IMX Meet, he showed some real grit in completing all the events even though he was not feeling his best. AJ achieved a score of 2181 and moved up one place from his 16th place finish in 2017.

Darien Apuron finished in 6th place with a score of 2161 in the 17 year old Girls Division.

Swimming in her fifth IMX meet, this was the

third time Darien finished in the top 16 and her 6th place finish matched her 2016 results.

Riley Stewart finished in 2nd Place in the 14 year old Boys Division. Riley finished with 4175 points. He had a great weekend of swimming and achieved personal best times in five out the six events. His 200 IM was his highest scoring event. His time of 2:01.54 in the 200 IM earned him 747 points as he finished 2nd in the event.

In his fifth year competing at the IMX Meet, and the defending Champion from 2017, Riley put in some outstanding races, but came up just short of repeating as Champion.

Evan Apuron finished in 2nd place in the 15 year old Boys Division. Evan finished with 4105 points achieving best times in four out of the six events. Evan won both the 200 Breaststroke (2:12.92 – 754 points) and 200 Butterfly (1:56.86 – 765 points). Evan’s 2nd place finish matched his 2nd place finish from last year.

Coach Alex Gort was proud of the results.

“Most of the team was battling a cold, so none were 100% healthy entering this meet,” Gort said. “The outstanding effort and determination each one showed to complete in this very tough meet made me proud.”

The Sea Lions Swim Team practices in Oro Valley during November – March while the water is too cold to hold practice in Mammoth.
