Extending a Welcoming Hand to Winter Visitors Most of the churches in the Copper Corridor are getting smaller and older. It’s tough to have few or no children, and no new adults coming
in. Good Shepherd Church in Kearny is no exception. But Pastor Michael Eaton, almost as an aside, said this past Sunday, “Look around us.
We have many empty seats. Just think how much room we have to be more welcoming! It’s the familiar question of water in the glass: half full or

half empty? Do we complain about not enough water or fill the glass? Rural Arizona towns (especially mining towns) are similar to the churches. The towns are getting smaller, older and poorer. We are discouraged often and lament our situation. We retreat into our memories of the way things used to be. When we get this kind of mindset we give up our capability to look around ourselves and see the possibilities which might be available to us. Let me recount something I did last February. With some other people from the Copper

winter living. I had 1,000 brochures touting Kearny and distributed 800 of them. I talked up our weather, the beauty, the outdoor life, and our businesses and health facilities. And I learned something. Canadian snow birds are tired of shuffleboard, golf, and expensive Continued on page 12

have often wished that the “old-timers” would record in some way what they remembered of their young life, and what they knew of their parents’ lives. I really wanted to interview an elderly man who lived along the lower end of the San Pedro River, but I waited too long. I am sorry that when I was younger and my mom was still with us that I hadn’t asked her more questions about her earlier life, although I later learned more. She, who was named Lula Flora, but was usually called Lu, had been born on April 11, 1895, and she was 18 years old when she married 46-year-old Will Giles who was from a ranching family in New Mexico, the state that my mom’s family had ended up in after having been in Texas and Oklahoma. Will Giles had been married, and after his wife had died their two very young children were under the care of members of the Giles family on their New Mexico ranch. A daughter named
June was born to my mom and Will Giles in January of 1918, but June died from pneumonia in 1919 and was buried on the Giles’ ranch. Then on mom’s birthday in 1926, the daughter Betty Jo was born in Clayton, New Mexico, but Betty Jo never knew her father Will Giles because he had died in Clayton, New Mexico at the age of 60 years, just three months before Betty had been born. My mom often said that Will Giles was so good to her that she was spoiled. Mom ended up marrying George Kishbaugh, the man who would become the father of myself and my two brothers, Bill and Charley, and we, with our half-sister Betty, were raised in Hayden, Arizona where my dad worked for Asarco. Our mom was a tall, attractive lady with brown hair and eyes, and she could really play the piano, even with one finger missing. The story I heard about that is when she and her brother Earnest were kids, he kept telling her to keep out of the way

I understand that when I was a baby my mom played the piano for dances at the Green Lantern in Dudleyville, and that Louis Mendoza, Sr., who had his M&M Grocery Store in San Pedro, and Lanny Parker, father of Forrest Parker who had his Parker’s Grocery Store in Winkelman, also played musical instruments for the dances. Winter Wonderland: Electric light parade and winter festival for the Copper Basin
“Baby, It’s Cold Outside. Wear Your Pajamas” reads the flyer for this year’s premier local winter festivity. It’s just one of those things that goes along with cooler weather, like hot cocoa, electric lights, bicycles, and … well, whatever floats your winter boat, or, more to the point, makes your boat into a winter float. It’s all about getting into the spirit of things, stepping out, stepping up when needed, and, having a great time with all your favorite people that you had the same sort of great time with during the same time of the year last year, and, maybe the year before that, and the year before that, for however many years you’ve been here and attending the Electric Light Parade and all the fun that accompanies it. In your pajamas? I’m not sure. Before you show up in uptown Kearny, looking like a sleepover waiting

to happen, you’d do well to contact the Chamber of Commerce by calling 520-363-7607 or emailing eppab@ yahoo.com, to ask how they would prefer you to be attired. This is also a good way to contact them for any other pertinent questions, including how to become a sponsor, volunteer, vendor, or entry in the Ugly Sweater contest. For instance, should you be wearing the sweater over or under your button front pajama top? Or, should it be covered in electric lights and be entered as a float? The answers to these questions and more can be yours. Just call or email and ask. Once you know all that you need to know to be secure in making a decision in how you will be involved in the Electric Light Parade, it will be time to get those lights untangled, float decorated, Christmas sweater uglied-up, pajamas pressed, car or bicycle tires aired up, or, whatever else is needed for your part in the parade. The entry is free and starts at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 2. Make sure to pack your flashlight. Check the batteries. Write down important, legible notes for the MC if you are going to enter into the parade. Otherwise, relax and prepare for fun. Last year, the parade lined up by the Teen Center, with smaller floats lining up in front of Kearny Town Hall and larger floats lining up on Jamestown, and, it ended at the GKI. If there are any changes in this plan, It has not yet come to the attention of this news agency. Let us assume, then, that uptown Alden will be where one will find the vendors for the Winter Festival, and,

Ray High School hosts annual Interview Day Ray High School’s annual Senior Interview Day was held on Monday, Nov. 20. All seniors participated in a mock interview with former Ray High School graduates who have gone on to be successful in their chosen field. Seniors have to present themselves as if it were a real interview and are asked to dress professionally and have with them their application, cover letter, and resume which are completed in their senior English class in the weeks prior to the event. Instruction on job interviewing skills and how to conduct themselves in an interview is also provided. Each student had a 15-20 minute interview with their assigned interviewer. They are then evaluated on their application materials and interview and feedback is provided to them on their evaluation form. The experience helps better prepare seniors for real life interviews as they participate in their job search in the future. Each interviewer was assigned 6 or 7 seniors to interview and from their pool of applicants they award a “Top Job Applicant Award” to the senior in their group who they would have offered the job to. This year’s Top Job Applicants were Sage Berg, Tommie Thompson, Chandler Coleman, Tristan Foster, Janae Ruiz, and Elizabeth Ziegler. The Top Job Applicants then had a group interview with the 6 interviewers and the overall winner was Sage Berg who received a $100 Visa gift card. Congratulations to all the participants.

Dickey Ministries’ Farewell Concert Tour to stop at church in Dudleyville Winkelman - As part of the Dickey Ministries’ Farewell Concert tour, the Southwestern Gospel Concert of Praise and Encouragement with Phil Dickey will be presented on Sunday, Dec. 10, at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., at the San Pedro Valley Baptist Church, located at 4670 N. Dudleyville Rd. in Dudleyville. Why, after having been on the road for over 20 years of encouraging the church through musical concerts, CD”s and a periodic email ministry letter, are Phil and Joy Dickey bidding this way of life goodbye? Beginning this last summer, the ministry in its present form began to be phased out so that Phil and Joy are able to assume their new roles with GraceWorks Global, an international ministry dedicated to taking the message of the Gospel to the world. During this Farewell Concert Tour, Phil is sharing information about their new ministry, as well as a musical message of encouragement. For those who wish to remain in touch, there will be a clipboard provided on the display table, where you are asked to print legibly to sign up for new ministry mailing list.
Phil Dickey
Dickey Ministries has been supported, over the years, by what is known as love offerings from those who attend where they are ministering. This has not changed. There is no set price for the CDs for those who wish to have a copy of the music. A container will also be provided on the display table for the purpose of love offerings. Dickey Ministries simply asks, when it comes to giving, “ As you consider your donation for CDs and/ or download cards. Let the Lord show you what He would have you give.”

It’s Time America
I
t’s time America, yes, it’s time to do what 22 other industrialized countries have done for their citizens, provide universal health care. Medicare for all with a single payer is the best option. Before you naysayers start crying that it is unsustainable, remember it is working
in these countries and has been for many years. It has also been available in some of our states including Massachusetts, Vermont and Hawaii. What is not sustainable is continually funding the war machine we know as the Military Industrial Complex. We cannot continue to finance imperialistic wars around the world and the war on drugs. A small decrease in the military budget wouldn’t hurt them much. We already spend more than the next seven countries combined which includes Russia and China. Let’s do something for the good of the people, like universal health care and putting people to work rebuilding our infrastructure. We can find creative ways to help finance health care. Some ideas would be to legalize marijuana nationwide and place a federal health tax on it. A small increase on tobacco and alcohol taxes to be used exclusively for health care. Then let’s add a large health
tax to all sales of guns and ammunition. A 25¢ charge on each bullet would be a nice start. A national health lottery. Let’s bring back President Reagan’s income tax rate levels for the rich. Yes, we probably would have to raise Medicare contributions but I believe people would go along with it, if it meant they had the security of guaranteed health care for their family from birth to death. Cards of Thanks To my family, friends & many supporters: You all have truly touched my heart with your love, friendship and the generous support you showed at the golf benefit. It was a wonderful occasion and showed me clearly how joy can be found in even the darkest of situations. I deeply appreciate each and every contribution, and I wish especially to thank Leticia Graham for organizing the benefit. Your efforts were God sent and much appreciated. Your outpouring of love and support has provided me with enormous comfort and relief. I am overwhelmed by your kindness and, also, feel the outpouring of love that provides me with the strength to Fight the Fight. #cancersucks Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Irma Esquivel

Continued from page 2 restaurants. They don’t like the smog and the traffic. What they are seeking is warmth, beauty, and opportunities for outdoor life. Many of them are hikers and were pleased to find out about the Arizona Trail. Others like four-wheeling, but they’re tired of pulling their trailers a long distance through traffic to get to off-road sites. Some like to fish; others like to hunt; others like long walks in the peace and quiet. That describes our area, doesn’t it? We have all that and more. But the Canadians, for the most part, are unaware of this part of the world. We need to fill this glass with publicity and our willing welcome. Another real possibility, partly realized, is the fact that we are a Gateway Community for the new Arizona Trail. Hiking season is already with us. The businesses in Kearny are working to be attentive to the needs of hikers. There are “trail angels” in town who
will respond at any time to drive to the Kelvin Bridge and bring hikers into town and back out again the next day. The IGA has a special trail needs section. Old Time Pizza even delivers pizza out to the trail head! Most of the hikers enjoy staying at the General Kearny Inn. Our bars and restaurants are starting to welcome these people (who seem to be either older persons or younger persons with few middle-agers). The presence of our winter residents is extremely valuable to us. They come to our churches; they support our school sports programs; they pick up their mail and shop in the stores just like the rest of us. And now many of them are our long-term friends. Let’s not take them for granted. Now that the Copper Corridor communities have fewer people, we have more room. Let’s see what it takes to welcome new people into our towns.
