It’s Time America
t’s time America, yes, it’s time to do what 22 other industrialized countries have done for their citizens, provide universal health care. Medicare for all with a single payer is the best option. Before you naysayers start crying that it is unsustainable, remember it

What is not sustainable is continually funding the war machine we know as the Military Industrial Complex. We cannot continue to finance imperialistic wars around the world
and the war on drugs. A small decrease in the military budget wouldn’t hurt them much. We already spend more than the next seven countries combined which includes Russia and China. Let’s do something for the good of the people, like Continued on page 3
OBITUARY Vera May (née Blyther) Sloan Williams Vera May (née Blyther) Sloan Williams, 90, died Nov. 20, 2017 at Mountain View Care Center in Tucson. She was born at home on June 25, 1927 in West Molesey, Surrey, England near Hampton Court Palace where her father served in the Kings Guard 15th/19th Royal Hussars cavalry unit. Vera was the fourth of five children. In 1944, she met Elmer W. Volz, an American soldier stationed at Hurst Park and they married at St. Peter’s Church in West Molesey. After their first child was born, Vera moved to the United States, settling in Clifton, AZ, where her husband managed the Lindsey Creamery. Though Vera remained British at heart and was proud of her heritage, she loved her adopted country and especially Arizona. She became a naturalized citizen of the U.S. on May 7, 1953. Vera and Elmer divorced in 1954. On Jan. 11, 1955 Vera married Charles Sloan in Silver City, NM. They eventually moved to San Manuel, AZ. Vera loved children and took care of many of the town’s youngsters. She liked to say she “practically raised them.” Charlie retired from Magma Copper in 1977. They enjoyed caring for their grandchildren and attending San Manuel
High School sports. Vera was acknowledged to be one of the leading “cheerleaders” for area teams and could be readily heard at sports gatherings. Charlie died in 1985. Vera married Henry L. Williams in 1994. They lived in Lakeside, AZ and San Manuel, AZ until relocating to Oracle in 2005. They loved the outdoors, especially the White Mountains region. They spent many days traveling Arizona roads. Vera often said Hank knew a lot of stories and all the back roads in Arizona. He died in 2010. Vera is survived by her brother, Harold (Sylvia) Blyther, West Molesey, Surrey; her children, Sandra (Bill) Poch, Dedham, MA; Sharon (Allen) Koning, whereabouts unknown; Ken (Nancy) Volz, Payson; Charles Jr. (Georgeann) Sloan, Elko, NV and Michael (Kelly) Sloan, Oracle; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren. Vera will be remembered for her beautifully coiffed hair, ever-present British accent, her gift of gab, and unceasing love of family. Per her request, no services are planned.
Buckle up.
We’d hate to meet you by accident.

M DRY HEAT
Continued from page 2 universal health care and putting people to work rebuilding our infrastructure. We can find creative ways to help finance health care. Some ideas would be to legalize marijuana nationwide and place a federal health tax on it. A small increase on tobacco and alcohol taxes to be used exclusively for health care. Then let’s add a large health tax to all sales of guns and ammunition. A 25¢ charge on each bullet would be a nice start. A national health lottery. Let’s bring back President Reagan’s income tax rate levels for the rich. Yes, we probably would have to raise Medicare contributions but I believe people would go along with it, if it meant they had the security of guaranteed health care for their family from birth to death. Author’s Note: I have been given the opportunity to express my opinion and viewpoints on politics, national, state, and local issues as well as life in general. I hope to inform you as well as entertain you, make you smile or make you mad. I will use humor, sarcasm and occasionally anger to express my views. My intention is to hold politicians accountable sometimes bringing some heat on them and if my views make you angry or hot, remember that like my humor, it is a dry heat. These opinions are entirely my own and do not reflect the views of Copper Area News Publishers.

ost of the churches in the Copper Corridor are getting smaller and older. It’s tough to have few or no children, and no new adults coming in. Good Shepherd Church in Kearny is no exception. But Pastor Michael Eaton, almost as an aside, said this past Sunday, “Look around us. We have many empty seats. Just think how much room we have to be more welcoming! It’s the familiar question of water in the glass: half full or half empty? Do we complain about not enough water or fill the glass? Rural Arizona towns (especially mining towns) are similar to the churches. The towns are getting smaller, older and poorer. We are discouraged often and lament our situation. We retreat into our memories of the way things used to be. When we get this kind of mindset we give up our capability to look around ourselves and see the possibilities which might be available to us. Let me recount something I did last February. With some other people from the Copper Corridor, I went to the Great Canadian Picnic at South Mountain Park in Phoenix. Have you heard of it? It was new to me. It’s a gathering of snow bird Canadians who meet their friends and trade information on things to do in Arizona. I went prepared to invite Canadians to try Kearny for winter living. I had 1,000 brochures touting Kearny and distributed 800 of them. I talked up our weather, the beauty, the outdoor life, and our businesses and health facilities. And I learned something. Canadian snow birds are tired of shuffleboard, golf, and expensive restaurants. They don’t like the smog and the traffic. What they are seeking is warmth, beauty, and opportunities for outdoor life. Many of them are hikers and were pleased to find out about the Arizona Trail. Others like four-wheeling, but they’re tired of pulling their trailers a long distance through traffic to get to off-road
sites. Some like to fish; others like to hunt; others like long walks in the peace and quiet. That describes our area, doesn’t it? We have all that and more. But the Canadians, for the most part, are unaware of this part of the world. We need to fill this glass with publicity and our willing welcome. Another real By Sam Hosler Special to Copper Area News possibility, partly realized, is the fact that we are a Gateway Community for the new Arizona Continued on page 9

Technology, Engineering, and Computer Information Systems Pathways at Central Arizona College PINAL COUNTY, Ariz. – The technology, engineering, and computer information systems pathways at Central Arizona College (CAC) are developed to serve the students and the needs of the community and businesses in Pinal County and beyond. The goal in designing these pathways was to provide students a flexible and equitable approach to obtaining skills and knowledge that will help them attain their education goals. The flexibility of the pathways is reflected in the various entry and exit points into and out of the technology, engineering, and information systems programs. The equity aspect lies in providing students awareness of possible futures, which they may not have thought about, and the opportunity of low risk exploration. Students in Pinal County high schools interested in learning skills and obtaining certificates or associate’s degrees in advanced technology education can take various technology related curriculum offered at CAC. The curriculum in these fields have been carefully crafted through input from industry in the county to ensure that students obtain skills and knowledge that will meet the needs of the employers in the county. Students within the technology area,
however, will also have an opportunity to explore the possibility of entering an engineering transfer program or a computer information systems program where they can obtain certificates, associate’s degrees, or transfer. This means that technology students, with a minimum of risk, can test their ambitions and decide whether an engineering transfer program or a computer information systems program could be a better alternative for them. Similarly, students who enter engineering from high school, but find it unsatisfactory, can easily switch to the myriad of offerings in the advanced technologies or computer information systems. With CIS Network Administration, Cyber-Operations and Informatics, students have a transfer path to UA South, which they can complete without leaving Pinal County. An instructor from UA South provides face-to-face instruction at CAC while another part of the program is covered with online classes. Although technology and the computer information systems are established programs at CAC, engineering is new. The engineering transfer degree uses a guided pathways approach and provides students the opportunity to complete almost

All but one course is currently transferrable to UA. This means a significant tuition savings for students and their families, which makes the engineering degree financially more
accessible to many students in Pinal and nearby counties. Besides the various mathematics, science, and computer information systems courses needed for the first two years of engineering, the new engineering curriculum has a redesigned Introduction Continued on page 8

to Engineering (EGR102) course, and two new courses that are being offered in 2018. The EGR 102 course redesign provides a heavily project-based approach that integrates engineering and advanced technologies. This means that students will be able to practice the engineering design process by working with instructors in engineering and technology on various projects in diverse technical fields. This approach will expose students to both well-structured and real-world projects, broaden their perspective about engineering and technologies, help them identify areas of academic interest, and provide them a broader perspective and awareness of the vast possibilities in engineering and technology education at CAC. The new 2018 engineering course offerings at CAC also include two new engineering courses that are transferrable to Arizona State University and Northern Arizona University: (1) Digital Design - EGR120, which is a required course for electrical, software and computer engineering and computer science students; and (2) Circuits I - EGR222, a course which students in aerospace, civil, mechanical, biomedical, electrical, software and computer engineering are required to take. In summary, the technology, engineering, and information systems pathways at CAC provide students a number of entry and exit points that lead to certificates, associate degrees, or transfer to four-year institutions, all within Pinal County. The quality and diversity of offerings in these technical pathways make it possible for employers to find a broad range of local talent within the county; it is also likely to make it attractive for new businesses to move to Pinal County.

are starting to welcome these people (who seem to be either older persons or younger persons with few middle-agers). The presence of our winter residents is extremely valuable to us. They come to our churches; they support our school sports programs; they pick up their mail and shop in the stores just like the rest of us. And now many of them are our long-term friends. Let’s not take them for granted. Now that the Copper Corridor communities have fewer people, we have more room. Let’s see what it takes to welcome new people into our towns.

Cards of Thanks To my family, friends & many supporters: You all have truly touched my heart with your love, friendship and the generous support you showed at the golf benefit. It was a wonderful occasion and showed me clearly how joy can be found in even the darkest of situations. I deeply appreciate each and every contribution, and I wish especially to thank Leticia Graham for organizing the benefit. Your efforts were God sent and much appreciated. Your outpouring of love and support has provided me with enormous comfort and relief. I am overwhelmed by your kindness and, also, feel the outpouring of love that provides me with the strength to Fight the Fight. #cancersucks Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Irma Esquivel

Sea Lions shine at IMX Meet; Riley Stewart IMX Champion
Sea Lions who competed at the IM Xtreme Games in Mesa were, in no order, Riley Stewart, Evan Apuron, AJ Lopez, Tabitha Kellam, Darien Apuron, Ethan Kellam, Mason Stewart and Johnny Smallhouse. Pictured with them are coaches Jeanine Apuron and Alex Gort. Photo by Vince Apuron
USA Swimming held the IM Xtreme Games in Mesa, Arizona at the Kino Aquatic Center Nov. 17-19. To qualify, swimmers in the Western Region of the USA (10 States from New Mexico to Alaska) had to achieve an IMX score of 1500 points or more in the preceding 18 months. An IMX score is obtained when a swimmer swims each of the IMX events. The events vary for each age group but in general include a 100 or 200 of each stroke (Butterfly, Backstroke and Breaststroke), the 200 Individual Medley (IM) (+ 400 IM for 13 and over), and the 500 Freestyle (200 Free for 10 and Under). A score is assigned based on the time for each event and age of the swimmer. The scores from each event are then added together to obtain the IMX Score (similar to the Decathlon in Track). It is a big achievement to complete all the IMX events and a milestone moment for any swimmer who achieves an IMX score of 1500 and qualifies for the IMX Meet. Eight Sea Lions swimmers qualified and competed in the demanding 3-day event. All eight Sea Lions swimmers achieved top 16 overall finishes in their respective ages and were awarded plaques. Riley Stewart became IMX Champion in the 13 year old Boys Division. He won with 4217 points, edging out another Arizona swimmer by a razor thin 6 points. Riley had a spectacular weekend, swimming personal best times in all six events, and winning the 200 Breaststroke (2:18.75) and 200 IM (2:07.49). Riley finished a close 2nd in the 400 IM (4:33.54), 500 Free (5:03.11), 200 Back (2:08.81) and finished 5th in the 200 Butterfly (2:15.74). In what was over 18 minutes of races over three days, the 6 point margin of victory is equivalent to a fraction of a second in any one of the 6 races.
