LETTER TO THE EDITOR Family First Pregnancy Care Center: How Blessed We Are As the weather begins to cool down a bit here in the high desert of Arizona and the vegetation begins to dry out, we know fall is here. The fun part of the cool temps is we get to wear cold weather clothes—sweaters, sweatshirts, hats, scarves and boots—even though it’s only for a couple of days! With fall here we know the holidays are right around the corner. Putting on my wool stocking cap brings me back to growing up as a child and the holidays. Thanksgiving was the one holiday I remember most as it involved food—and I do like to eat! I remember waking up on Thanksgiving morning with the smell of turkey throughout the house. Mom was up by four in the morning stuffing the turkey and

getting the big meal going. The pumpkin and apple pies were already made, while the dough was rising for the buns. Mealtime brought all seven of us kids around the picnic table. Yes, we had a picnic table for a dining table--don’t know why to this day! Then mom would bring out the turkey! Each year it smelled better, tasted better too! We kids were always anxious to dig in when we were reminded what the day was for: to give thanks to God. Grace was said, we ate till we could eat no more, then it was time for dessert! First, we went around the table all remembering what we were most thankful for. Giving thanks made the food, the day and our family closer together! Giving thanks made us think a little less about ourselves and more about those who had less than we did. Every year my mother would remind us of the poor children in Poland who would be happy to have just

the crumbs from our table! Then we could have our dessert! It is in this spirit Family First was started over 15 years ago. Giving thanks to God for all we have, realizing there are others right here in our community who have needs greater than our own. Knowing He has blessed us so we can be a blessing to others. Sharing a little with those who have needs greater than ours, reminds us how blessed we are. As we enter the holiday season this year, take time to give thanks, remember the poor children in Poland, in America and in our own community who could use a little help, won’t you join us? God bless, /s/ Frank and Clare Grochocki Family First Pregnancy Care Center

Celebrating Dia de los Muertos in Mammoth

By John Hernandez San Manuel Miner The Mexican-Indigenous tradition of Dia de los Muertos or All Souls Day is celebrated among some of the Hispanics

along the Copper Corridor. On Friday, Nov. 2, there were many graves in at the Mammoth Cemetery with new flowers. Alicia Gallego of Mammoth set up shop in front of the Miner’s Memorial and sold flowers and salsa to

people stopping by to visit and pray for their friends and family who have died. Alice said that on Thursday, Nov. 1, All Saints Day, she was at the Mountain View Cemetery in Hayden and sold a lot of her flowers.

A Tragic School Shooting in a Small Mining Town, Part 2

A

week after the funeral, the Miner printed an editorial about the shooting. It read in part: “The coroner’s jury found that the boy who owned the gun and car and his parents were negligent as well as the boy who held the gun and fired. They must all bear a share of the responsibility for Ana Flores’ death.” “A member of the Flores family said they hoped that Ana’s death would shock people to the realization that safety does not ‘just happen’ but that it must be worked for, and that her death would serve as a warning and object lesson to everyone.” “We join with the Flores’ family in hoping that Ana’s tragic death will awaken people to their responsibilities. And we express to the

Ana Flores

Flores family the heartfelt grief and sincere condolence of the entire community.” In 1956, beginning in October, the San Manuel Miner would print weekly what they referred to as a “box score” of gun accidents in Arizona. The week of Annie’s death, they reported that there had been 121 people injured by accidental gunfire and 12 people killed so far, that year. It has been 61 years since the tragedy of Annie’s shooting. Her death may have been the first shooting on school grounds or at least the first fatal school shooting in Arizona. I could not find any information on other school shootings in Arizona preceding hers. Mary Ann Newham has a copy of the 1957 school yearbook Copperleaf which was dedicated to Annie Flores. Mary Ann’s father was a teacher at the school, Mr. Walker, no relation to Jack Walker. Mary Ann was kind enough to post the dedication, which read: Annie Flores in Memorium “Early one September morning in 1954, along with many other students new to San Manuel High School. Annie entered school at the Barracks. She soon became well liked by all around her and she was active in several organizations. Her junior and senior years saw her as a happy, friendly Pom-Pom girl who always had a smile and friendly greeting for everyone! “Tragically, in the fall of 1956, this all came to an end, and so in loving memory, we dedicate this our annual, to her, Annie Flores.” A Note from the Author: I first heard of this tragedy as a ghost story but the ghost had no name. A tale was told of a young high school girl who had been shot on campus and who’s spirit roamed the breezeways of the school. I thought it was just a made-up story until I came across the articles in the Miner archives while researching another article. I asked many of my friends who had

grown up in San Manuel and they had not heard the story. I was reminded about the story around six months ago by a man in Mammoth, who told me I should write a story about Annie so she wouldn’t be forgotten. He felt that justice was not served and that there may have been a racial component to the incident. In my research, I could not find any evidence of racism involved in the shooting. In talking with people who went to school at the time, it seems that most of the students seemed to get along. Not to say that racism did not exist in San Manuel as this was the 1950s and the town was one of the first mining towns in Arizona where the housing was fully integrated, by that I mean there was not a Mexican section and a separate Anglo section. The question of justice being served is another matter. It appears by all accounts that it was an accident but if it had happened today, I believe that the kids involved in the shooting would have been punished more severely. Would it have been handled the same way if two Mexican-American boys had accidentally shot and killed an Anglo girl? I hope the two boys involved in the shooting were able to get past it and go on to live

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE By John Hernandez San Manuel Miner productive lives and appreciate that they were given a second chance to do so. The forgiveness of Annie’s mother and family was amazing to me! What a strong and loving woman Mrs. Flores must have been. Rest in Peace, Annie Flores. Attempts were made to contact the Flores family for their input or comment but I did not hear back from them.

San Manuel Jr. Miners win back-to-back CJHL Championships; Hayden plays a very close second By Andrew Luberda Copper Area News

The San Manuel Jr. High football team won its secondstraight Central Junior High League Championship by defeating Hayden Jr. High on Wednesday, Oct. 24, 22 – 20. “We stuck together as we made mistakes throughout the game,” San Manuel head coach Freddy Burnham said. “That allowed us to overcome them.” The Jr. Miners avenged a loss to the Jr. Lobos just a few weeks ago – a 34 – 6 defeat – to reach a goal they set before the season. The Jr. Miners’ defense was the difference in the second meeting between the teams, as the unit allowed only one touchdown. Hayden’ other two scores came only special teams. “Our defense came up with some big stops that allowed us to get the ball back,” Burnham said. Isaiah Ramirez rushed for a pair of touchdowns for the Jr. Miners while Mathias Medina ran for another. For the Jr. Lobos, running back and defensive end Damien Smith, safety Jando Lorona, and quarterback Fabian Elvira played well, according to head coach Nimo Lorona. “We played well,” Lorona said. “(San Manuel) is very big, tough team. We’re undersized compared to them, but we fought hard until the end. We just ran out of time because they controlled the ball and clock and kept the ball away from us.” Congratulations to the players and coaches on both teams.

Miner Swimmers compete at State Championship Meet; Evan Apuron State Champion in the Butterfly

The Division III High School State Championship Swim Meet was held at the Phoenix Country Day Aquatic Center in Paradise Valley on Nov. 2-3. The Miners qualified three swimmers in individual events and a relay team for the meet. Preliminaries were held on Friday afternoon to determine who would advance to the Finals on Saturday afternoon. Senior Darien Apuron advanced to the Championship Finals (1st- 8th) in the 100 Butterfly and Consolation Finals (9th -16th) in the 100 Backstroke with great races. In Finals, Darien swam a very fast time of 1:01.68 in the Fly to finish in 5th Place. Darien went on to finish in 13th place in the Backstroke with a time of 1:05.65. Darien accounted for all 18 of the Miner Girls Team points, good enough to place the team in 24th place (out of 60 teams in Division III). Senior Michael Primero-Predgo swam a School Record time of 23.47 in Prelims of the 50 Freestyle to advance to the Consolation Finals. His 100 Freestyle also qualified for the Consolation Finals. Michael went even faster in finals, improving his School Record mark to 23.36 on his way to a 13th place finish. His time of 52.08 in the 100 Freestyle

finals was a season best that earned him 14th place. Sophomore Evan Apuron advanced to the Championship Finals in both the 100 Butterfly and 100 Breaststroke with tremendous swims on Friday. On Saturday, Evan became State Champion in the 100 Butterfly, winning with a time of 51.13 (a School Record). In the 100 Breaststroke, Evan broke the 1 minute barrier with a time of 59.95 to finish in 3rd place. Senior Daniel Garcia and Freshman Hunter Hill joined Evan and Michael on the 200 Freestyle Relay team and advanced to the Consolation Finals. With a season best time of 1:39.38, the Miner Relay finished 13th with great mix of experience, youth and age. Daniel began swimming just over two years ago, and is the perfect example of how far someone can go in the sport of swimming with hard work and dedication. Hunter made an immediate impact on the team as a Freshman and gained some valuable experience for the future. Michael came through as a senior when his team needed him most. Evan works hard all year to be the best, and with two years of High School Swimming still ahead of him, he has a very bright future.

ADOT Construction Academy helping more women enter construction trades;

Patricia McKinley is a graduate of the Construction Academy.

PHOENIX – An unemployed single mom of three, Iris Bost hoped to break into the male-dominated construction industry that would provide better pay than working retail. Through a social media post, the 42-year-old Globe resident was excited to learn about an Arizona Department of Transportation-sponsored Construction Academy at Gila Community College. She signed up for the free apprenticeship program to learn carpentry and earned college credit too. After finishing her training last year, Bost decided to start her own business teaching classes on job-related safety and health hazards as well as flagger/traffic control certification in partnership with ADOT and Gila Community College. “There should be more women in the construction field, and I want to do what I can to help them,” said Bost, who taught her first Occupational Safety and Health Administration class at Gila Community College in August. “I want to teach both women and men about what they can and cannot do on the job so that they will work safely.” To help remove barriers to careers in transportation construction, Construction Academy programs that ADOT offers with employers, community colleges, Native American tribes and others provide free training and other support – including safety gear and help with transportation

PROFESSIONAL TRUCK DRIVERS As the freight market fluctuates, your paycheck and miles shouldn’t have to. Some carriers are scrambling for freight to keep drivers moving. and child care – for members of economically disadvantaged groups. While the list of qualifying individuals also includes minorities, veterans and those who are unemployed, among others, one benefit of this program has been helping more women enter the construction trades. Of the more than 600 people who have graduated from Construction Academy pre-apprentice training programs since they began in 2014, about 35 percent are women. Three-quarters of participants have gone on to work in the construction field as flaggers, commercial truck drivers, heavy equipment operators, highway surveyors, electricians, carpenters, painters, pipe fitters, concrete finishers and block masons. Depending on the position, they start out earning $14 to $24 an hour, and sometimes more. “ADOT is investing in attracting and training skilled construction workers. Our Construction Academy not only benefits individuals but helps the construction industry in Arizona as a whole while connecting women and others with construction job opportunities,’’ said Dr. Vivien Lattibeaudiere, ADOT’s employee and business development administrator. “We help place Construction Academy graduates into apprenticeships and trainee positions with contractors that build roads in Arizona. minorities, veterans, jobless among others benefiting from the program transportation system and the state’s economy.’’ Women comprise about 9 percent of construction workers nationally, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Offered through ADOT’s On-TheJob-Training Supportive Services Program, part of the agency’s Business Engagement and Compliance Office, the Construction Academy combines handson activities and classwork that includes computer technology, construction math, commercial driving and job-related safety and health hazards. Training is offered in the evenings and some weekends to make it more accessible. Along with safety gear such as hard hats, protective eyewear and boots, Construction Academy participants receive job-readiness training and continued mentoring to help them achieve journeyman status. As an added bonus, Construction Academy participants like Bost perfect their construction skills by giving back to their communities. Bost and her classmates built a shed for the Globe Miami Piranha swim team and

rehabilitated an elderly man’s home. She’s also found the skills helpful in her personal life. “The ADOT Construction Academy is a great opportunity not only to prepare you for a job in the construction field, but you also learn what to do if you want to make repairs in your own home,’’ Bost said. Patricia McKinley, another Construction Academy participant, said she wanted to do more than office work at the small trucking company that she and her husband started in Phoenix. She wanted to drive a large truck for construction jobs but couldn’t afford the training to get a Class A commercial driver license. Thanks to ADOT’s Construction Academy, McKinley was able to obtain her commercial driver license at no cost. While working full-time, she participated in a six-week program offered four nights a week at Southwest Truck Driving School in Phoenix. She also earned her traffic control flagger certification. Today, the 39-year-old mother of two operates an 18-wheeler to transport dirt excavated for highway projects. She and her husband, Jonvai, own KHAVL

Transport LLC, an ADOT-certified Disadvantaged Business Enterprise. “I was the only woman out of six students in the commercial driver license class, and I was intimidated at first. But my husband encouraged me to keep going,’’ McKinley said. “This is a great opportunity for anyone looking to grow. ADOT’s program

provided me with free gear and taught me what I needed to go to work.” For more information or to apply for a Construction Academy, please visit azdot. gov/BECO, call 602.712.7761 or pick up materials at the ADOT Business Engagement and Compliance Office, 1801 W.
