Massive windstorm causes damage in Superior
Thursday morning, residents and business owners of Superior woke up to dark homes and massive damage throughout the town due to extremely high winds. The winds started around 2 a.m. and blew through the late morning. About 1,600 customers lost power due to the windstorm according to Arizona Public Service, most of the customers had power restored before 7 a.m. Major damage was reported throughout the town. Trees fell on homes and cars. Roofs were blown off. The iconic Save Money Market sign was destroyed in
the wind along with damage to several of the new street signs. Unofficial wind gusts were estimated to have been close to 90 miles per hour near the core of the storm based on the damage caused by the wind on Main St. Local weather enthusiast and resident Nathan Taylor reported that his weather station recorded 59 mile per hour winds near Highway 177 and Kiser. The Town of Superior Public Works crew worked all day Thursday and Friday to clean up the storm damage.
Odonetto Construction, Superior Mining Services and Superior Environmental Solutions all lent crews to the Town to help expedite clean up efforts. The damaged street signs will all be repaired and the poles will be replaced with stronger poles. New poles had to be ordered to accommodate the repair of the signs. Town officials met with the Pinal County Emergency Services Director on Friday to assess the damage. There was not enough damage to declare an emergency or to request relief funds.

BTA Christmas Bird Count
How did Christmas Bird Counts begin? The Audubon Society reports: “prior to the turn of the 20th century, hunters engaged in a holiday tradition known as the ‘Christmas Side Hunt.’ They would choose sides and go afield with their guns-whoever brought in the biggest pile of feathered (and furred) quarry won. Conservation was in its beginning stages in that era, and many observers and scientists were becoming concerned about declining bird populations. Beginning on Christmas Day 1900, ornithologist Frank M. Chapman, an early officer in the then-nascent Audubon Society, proposed a new holiday tradition-a ‘Christmas Bird Census’ that would count birds during the holidays rather than hunt them.” Birders enthused to join this venerable holiday tradition (of counting not hunting) may participate with our local Superior ‘CBC’ on Dec. 23, Saturday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Coordinator Cynthia Donald arranges teams to census sparrows and tally towhees from Queen Valley and Whitlow Dam to Hewitt Station Road, desert foothills below Picketpost Mountain, here at BTA and the town of Superior and up Queen Creek Canyon to the Oak Flat campground. Birders of all physical abilities are welcome. To volunteer with this count or request more information, call Cynthia at 480.283.4515 or email: planres@earthlink.net.

Make the gift buying experience for young kids easy, by keeping it simple
SAN MANUEL (December 2017) – Every year there’s a hot new toy that sells out and drives parents to race from store to store in search of the latest gadget or stuffed animal. This year, make the gift buying experience for the youngest kids in your life easier. When it comes to promoting learning for children 5 and younger, basic toys and quality time with adults are the best gifts an infant, toddler or preschooler can receive. First Things First has compiled some suggested toys by age and stage that promote learning and language development. Books are one of the best gifts for all ages. Daily reading has been shown to help young children develop language skills and increase vocabulary – both crucial if they are going to be good readers in the future. Other good choices for different age groups include: For babies under 1 year old, focus on toys that stimulate curiosity. Babies are fascinated by their surroundings, especially faces and bright colors. They enjoy playing hideand-seek with different objects. Look for things such as: • board books • safe, chewable toys • toys with mirrors For toddlers between 1 and 3 years old look for toys that
encourage imagination and problem-solving such as: • pretend versions of everyday objects • balls to roll or catch • building-type toys, including fill and dump varieties. • matching and sorting toys • large crayons or markers with plain paper • simple puzzles For preschoolers, which covers ages 3 to 5, look for toys that help them relate to each other and the world around them include: • dress-up clothes • simple board games • counting and letter games • sports equipment suitable to their size • musical instruments • art supplies such as play dough, safety scissors, glue, etc. Another thing to keep in mind is that parents and family members talk the most to babies when they are engaging their child with books and traditional toys, rather than electronic toys that claim to promote language development. Young children learn through play, through experimenting with the world around them and through interaction with other kids and adults. The best toys are those that appeal to the way their minds work. Those toys
will get used most and will help children develop skills they will need to be successful once they enter school. About First Things First – First Things First is a votercreated, statewide organization that funds early education and health programs to help kids be successful once they enter kindergarten. Decisions about how those funds are spent are made by local councils staffed by community volunteers. To learn more, visit FirstThingsFirst.org.
