LETTER TO THE EDITOR Local impacts of tax bill Taxpayers and voters of the Tri-Community and Copper Corridor will soon come face to face with what the Tax Cut and Jobs Act means for our communities. Based on demographics of the region, it’s clear that most local taxpayers won’t be major beneficiaries. In fact, Eastern Pinal taxpayers will be big losers if adding a trillion + dollars to the federal deficit triggers cuts to entitlement programs like Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security and Food Stamps. Rich people and big corporations aren’t located here so

their gains won’t be felt here. At best a handful of small businesses may benefit at the margins from changes in tax rules regarding treatment of pass through profits. Another handful who currently deduct contributions to churches and charities may gain from a doubling of the standard deduction. But religious institutions and non profits themselves may be losers as local donors lose tax incentives to make contributions. On the job growth front, Eastern Pinal County needs investments in infrastructure, education and training to both grow and access good paying jobs. Tax cuts targeting big corporations and the super wealthy will produce none of the above. Even a best case scenario put forward by corporate tax cut devotees fails to envision a surge in good
paying jobs to replace those lost to mine, mill and smelter closures in places like San Manuel, Mammoth, Oracle, Hayden, Winkelman, Kearny and Superior. Many Tri-Community residents will recall that what closed the San Manuel mine, mill, smelter and refinery, when still profitable wasn’t the price of copper, labor contracts, environmental regulations, the corporate tax rate or some combination thereof. It was demands made by a multi national corporation - BHP Billiton headquartered in Australia - for an unattainably high return on capital investment and a tax write off that Congress is leaving untouched in current negotiations. Of course, the well being of workers and their families never Continued on page 3

TAX BILL Continued from page 2
figured in these corporate calculations any more than the well being of ordinary tax payers figured prominently in congressional deliberations. The rock solid heart of the new federal tax cut legislation is not “middle class tax cuts”, which are uncertain and, at best, piddling, but huge cuts designed to make Corporate America more profitable than it currently is. Ironically because 35% of US corporations are owned by foreign investors the payoff to them from this legislation is gigantic. The claim that going deeper into debt to aid big business serves the common good is ridiculous on its face. Congress, as of this writing, is wrapping up the Tax Cut and Jobs Act before sending it to the President for his signature. Unsurprisingly their most recent move is to make additional cuts to taxes on the wealthy. What we now know is that when the tax bill’s impacts are finally tallied through real life experience, there will be a few big winners and lots of losers including our children and children’s children who will assume responsibility for the nation’s staggering debt load. If the citizens of the nation can’t stop this massively unpopular legislation now, opportunities for redress at the next election in November, 2018 loom on the horizon. /s/ Frank Pierson Oracle, AZ

My Collection of Writings
really enjoy looking through my collection of writings by others. I consider them treasures because some were written by those who are not with us anymore. One is a booklet of poems written by Ben Headley Patten who I remember as living just to the north of Mammoth, Arizona. The back cover of his booklet states that he was born on a ranch in the Powder River country of Montana in 1924; that he had worked with cattle and horses ever since; that he has also tried his hand at saddle making, black- jack dealing, and deputy sheriffing; and since the 1950’s he has ranched in southern Arizona, mostly around the small towns of Oracle and Mammoth. Also in my collection is the 22 typed pages that is titled EARLY PIONEERS OF THE SAN PEDRO RIVER VALLEY, which was by Albert C. Bittick Jr. On the front page of the copy that was given to my husband, Cliff Wood, and me were the written words, “For an old Pioneer Family Friend Clifford Wood from Al Bittick.” Also, several letters were sent to us with attached poems that were written by Al Bittick. He was quite a musician, and he stated he played for a lot of dances with Roy McClure, Jones Ragsdale, Forrest Dollar, and others; also, they played at most all the school houses in the country, Dudleyville, the Oaks in Oracle, Aravaipa school house, Mammoth, Sombrero

Butte, etc., and he played mostly with Roy McClure who was the best fiddler he ever played with. Also included in my collection is the memoirs of Caldonia “Callie” Ann Brandenburg, wife of early Aravaipa Creek settler James W. Brandenburg, and the memoirs of their daughter Annie Elizabeth Forbach. Copies of these memoirs were given to me by Annie’s son, Alvin Forbach, when in his eighties, and they are so very interesting. I did mention them in two earlier Georgie Digs articles that were published in the Copper Basin News in 2010, but I may soon add a few things that Annie Forbach had mentioned in her memoirs about Mammoth, Arizona.

The year is getting ready to say its final goodbyes. The holiday season is upon us, it’s a time to look back and reflect and a time to look ahead and expect! This past year as a country and as individuals, we have all gone through many good and also trying times. But it’s important to see; God has brought us through the past year, He has been here with us through it all! As it was foretold of the Christ child before His birth: He shall be called Emanuel, which means God with us”. Having God Himself with us, Christ Himself taking us through all that life brings; life changer! Knowing He is with us and that He is here to provide all we need for now and the future. That is where the looking ahead and expecting comes in! Here at Family First we have seen God do so many great things this past year. God has used us all, you by your prayers, encouragement,
and giving has enabled us to do all that we do, helping our mothers, youth and families! We are looking ahead to 2018, expecting God to do bigger and greater things into the New Year! Take some time this Christmas season reflecting on all God has done, count your blessings, thanking God and start expecting greater things for the New Year! All of us here at Family First are wishing you and your family a Merry Christmas. May Christs peace overwhelm you this holiday season and on into the New Year! You Should Listen When the Universe is Telling You Something
T
his story started about three days ago. I get pushes some of the time, or in other words a very strong feeling comes over me and it will generally guide me to a store where there is something I’ve been looking for and couldn’t find in the usual fashion. This push appeared to be no exception as far as I was concerned. I assumed this was about something I’d find at The Golden Goose around ten o’clock in the morning. I awoke yesterday morning ready to go to the store when it opened, as many items are purchased at that time, but somehow I felt it was okay to be late, getting some kind of reassurance being late would be all right, which seemed a little odd, but okay. When I left home I had another urge to stop by the post office, before I started down to The Golden Goose, in hopes of picking up some late Christmas packages but that turned out to be a red herring of sorts, my post office box was empty. As my car headed down toward Catalina, I wondered why I had even thought to stop by the post office to look for mail, a feeling come over me of complete contentment just as a person came into sight who was walking along the side of the highway. I wondered if he was a bicyclist we often see along the route to Catalina; but the closer I got to him the more I started realizing he was walking along with a backpack slung across his back and a package he was holding in his hand. I had an urge to stop and pick him up but thought perhaps he was wanting to take a solitary walk on his own as hikers do in our area so I ignored the impulse and drove by him just as I saw his finger come up signifying he was open to a ride in a car. As I drove by him, further down the road, a stronger urge came over me to turn around and go back to him. I resisted realizing I needed to get to town; but the more I drove along ignoring that urge the stronger the urge became until I finally stopped my car beside the highway. A feeling of complete exasperation coursed through my veins as I waited for cars to pass me and turned my car around going all the way back to offer this stranger a ride into Catalina not understanding this situation. He almost ran across the highway when he saw me, but I was able to turn my car around and allow him to put his backpack and package in the backseat. He sat down beside me saying he was grateful I had come around because he was very tired and wondered if he’d be able to walk much further down the road.
AND SO IT GOES AT THE RANCH By Sigrid Settle Special to the Miner He had spent the night in Oracle in a tent behind the Circle K, but rest had eluded him. I started driving down the road and our conversation began with him talking quickly and me asking questions in between rapid fire words from him. It turned out he was from Munich, Germany, had been abandoned by his parents when he was two years old and as a result he became mute for ten years. He said he didn’t remember those ten years and as he continued talking I realized his thoughts were a bit unfocused jumping from subject to subject in rather rapid succession. He stopped for a few moments in between breathes and said perhaps he was trying to make up for ten years of being mute, but since he was 61 years old I rather thought by now he’d caught up with ten years of silence. I asked him if he’d like to stop by The Golden Goose, a sort of thrift store, as that was my first destination. He said he had lots of time with a smile coming across his face as he helped me unload some of the items I was giving away that day. When we went into the store I told him I’d buy him a few items of clothes as I noticed his clothes didn’t fit very well and I realized there was a distinctive odor coming from them. He was surprised and off he went to find pants and a top as I walked leisurely around looking for items I needed and had not been unable to find at any store recently. It became obvious I wasn’t going to find anything I was looking for and that seemed a little odd as I had that push to come here or so I thought, as I shrugged my shoulders, as I went over to see if he’d found some clothes. He came back with a sweatshirt and pair of pants that would fit him which was rather Continued on page 23

Sheriff’s Office investigates apparent drug death Pinal County Deputies were called to a residence in the 1100 block of N. Justice Dr., Oracle, on Saturday, Dec. 16, at approximately 10 p.m. after the resident reported that someone was in distress. Upon arrival, deputies found Vincent Chavez dead from an apparent drug overdose. PCSO Public Information Officer Navideh Forghani said that deputies found drug paraphernalia at the scene and were treating the case as an overdose. She told the San Manuel Miner that the case was reported to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency as part of the Heroin Enforcement Action Team (HEAT). In early November, the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office announced that it had joined the DEA’s initiative to combat drug-related deaths. Nearly 500 people have lost their lives from a suspected opioid overdose in Arizona in the last four months. The opioid and heroin epidemic is a battle impacting our
communities, including Pinal County. HEAT is an enforcement initiative developed by DEA’s Phoenix Field Division to tackle the evolving opioid epidemic at every level. In conjunction with the development of investigations targeting the highestlevel heroin traffickers, the HEAT mission includes the pursuit of local drug traffickers directly responsible for overdose deaths. The DEA HEAT is examining all available reporting surrounding these deaths to pursue any investigative leads and tougher criminal charges. The program was launched in 2016 and has been a success. In DEA’s partnership with local jurisdictions has helped successfully indict several defendants both federally, and at the local level. “You cannot just go after these criminals with drug charges. They are killing people in our community. I want to send a message to those preying on our citizens that we will no longer settle for drug charges. We want
them to know their next deal could land them behind bars for the rest of their lives,” said Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb. “Every day, too many Arizonans are dying from opioid overdoses. The DEA will target those traffickers who inflict harm in our communities and relentlessly pursue those responsible for selling the drugs which cause the deaths of our loved ones.” said Doug Coleman, Special Agent in Charge of DEA in Arizona. “The DEA is proud to partner with the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office to expand our HEAT initiative and help bring to justice those who would harm the citizens of Pinal County.” If you have a tip, please download the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office App from the App store on your smart phone. You will be able to submit your tip anonymously. You can also click on the following link to submit a tip anonymously to the DEA, https://www.dea.gov/ops/ submit.php.

Dear Santa ...
As has happened in days of yore, children gathered in classes, at home, snuck a little private time and took their opportunity to reach out in thanks to Santa, and, in hope of delightful gifts under the tree come Christmas morning. He, in turn, shared with us some of the special local letters that touched his heart or really gave him reason to let out a hardy “Ho ho ho!” of laughter. Now, even though Santa can read the heart as well, we have to rely on just our eyes, so where the pen was pressed lightly or the scanner shone too brightly, there may be words missing or misunderstood. Don’t let that distract you from the enjoyment of these sweet missives.

San Manuel’s Cruz gets ‘WBF’ in first match of season By Andrew Luberda Copper Area News San Manuel wrestler Devin Cruz (195) pinned her opponent from Canyon del Oro high school in her first match of the season during a multi-meet at Vista Grande on Dec. 13. Cruz, who battled back after suffering a knee injury prior to the start of the season, was met with cheers and hugs from her teammates following the win. The Miners as team didn’t fair nearly as well
in team results, largely due to traveling with only seven healthy wrestlers. Vista Grande and Canyon del Oro both handily defeated the Miners. Jayden Smith (182), Ruben Hernandez (195) and Adrian Romero (220) each went 2 – 0 at the meet. The Miners will be on
break until Wednesday, Dec. 27, when they travel
to Miami for holiday multi-meet.

OWN-Oracle Year in Review Oracle - This year, two significant community events happened in Oracle. First of all, OWN (Oracle Women’s Network) became OWN-Oracle. Secondly, the TriCommunity Visitor Center had a name change, as well, to the Oracle Visitor Center. OWN-Oracle held a breakfast celebration at the Oracle Inn on Friday, Dec. 1, for its annual Christmas Party. There were 41 in attendance for this combination of food, fun and meeting to hear the highlights of the year. Gifts were exchanged and the exchange was both naughty and nice, with some stealing occurring. A Naughty Button was awarded. OWN-Oracle used this opportunity to also seek out new members, with Deb Breen, a member of the OWN-Oracle Board, speaking on the importance of membership and encouraging everyone to renew for themselves and to help identify new members. For those who may not be aware, OWN-Oracle does encourage and invite gentleman to join the group. On this subject, Alicia Bristow, President of OWN-Oracle

AT THE RANCH Continued from page 5
an accomplishment since he made Abe Lincoln look short and as I stood beside him I looked as if I was a munchkin from the Wizard of Oz. I took the purchases to the register to pay for them and he asked if he could change into his new clothes. I nodded yes and pointed toward the men’s restroom. He emerged from the rest room looking so much better without his old clothes and I must say smelling a bit better as well. I found out later he had to throw away his pants when he was camping in Globe. It was so cold, he only had a small tent, so he took a rock, heated it up by the fire and then put it between his legs to try and warm up. He had to throw away the pants the next day and replaced them with clothes he found along the highway; as a matter of fact everything he had on, including the scarf keeping his head warm, had been discarded items he had found as he was walking from Sedona, Arizona all the way to Oracle which covered a five day period of time and people who were picking him up offering him rides to their destinations. His backpack was not that large and I started realizing there was no way he’d could carry many clothes with him followed by the realization this man didn’t have enough money to pay to have his clothes cleaned; the most expedient thing to do was to toss them away when they were dirty enough as he did in the rest room when he changed his clothes this day. It appeared there were others as well who had this habit from Sedona to Oracle. Our journey together found us at Starbucks with me buying
him the largest coffee I could purchase and a surprise look coming across his face as he drank the first gulp and said he usually got coffee from a convenience store if he had any money at all and certainly not Starbucks. This was followed by purchasing a much needed scarf to keep his neck warm and a cap to replace the old piece of cloth he had used to keep his head warm on his long trek. He then found himself at Whole Foods glancing down at their food buffet of chicken, macaroni and cheese, all sorts of vegetables and other foods cooked in the most luxurious fashion possible as well as a large selection of deserts. When I handed him a food container to fill up he looked as if he was a child in a candy store loading up items that made his stomach yearn to eat and a realization came over him how hungry he had become; something I think he ignored a great deal of the time. We parted company in front of the Salvation Army store close to a bus stop that would allow him to ride into downtown Tucson which he said was his final destination. As I drove off I saw him on the bench waiting for the bus, but he seemed more absorbed in eating his container of food from Whole Foods than looking for a bus to ride in. I started back toward the stores I needed to shop at now that I found myself in this area, but I wondered why all of this had happened, I really never found anything I had needed during this journey. He told me he had been quite depressed the morning just before I picked him up, talking to God and wondering if things would get better; hoping and praying things would
get better. I told him perhaps we had come together to remind him the Universe is an amazing place and when you ask for help it will appear, but somehow that explanation didn’t leave me feeling as if I had my answer as to all that had just happened. I went to bed that night still wondering and I drifted off to sleep without an answer; that is until this morning when a friend called me to update me on what was happening in her life. She started talking to me and I had that familiar feeling come over me; I felt a push to tell this story for the first time and she listened as it unfolded. I told her about the happenings before I found this man, how we had come together and all things that followed after he opened the car door and sat beside me. She listened and as she did I had the sense this story was for her. She had a son who is out in the world alone. She worries about him because there are times when he has no money, no place to stay but any of the help she has given him doesn’t seem to help his circumstances at all leaving her with a feeling of helplessness, a place no mother wants to find herself in not knowing what to do. I finished telling her my story and told her if the Universe could help this 61 year old man from Munich who had asked God for help in his prayer that morning and found himself on this journey with me, I thought her son would also receive the help he needed as well. Perhaps the Universe was saying not to worry, we are here, just allow it to come into your life. And so it goes at the Ranch and Beyond ~ Sigrid
