#Forward: The Future of Education

Transforming the way J.O. Combs is teaching children The world of college and careers is vastly different than the one that many of us experienced. Today’s students have grown up with technology as an integral part of their lives. Technology today allows for instant communication, online purchases, and access to worldwide content. The world is changing at such a pace that it is difficult to predict the careers of the future. #Forward is the J.O. Combs Unified School District’s movement which is transforming the way we teach our students. The goal is to ensure that students have the skills necessary to

be successful in our ever-changing society. The district’s focus includes modern learning environments that leverage technology and ensuring students are prepared for collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, and communication. “I’m incredibly excited to learn and work alongside our teachers as we modernize our teaching practices and ensure we’re providing all our students with the best education, every day. We are ready to embrace this challenge because we know that our students, and ultimately our community, desire and deserve our

Thank you for your service to the students and staff of J.O. Combs Unified School District The J.O. Combs Unified School District would like to thank Mrs. Kathy Bourgeous and Dr. Gary Kemp for their service to the students and staff. As a thank you, they were recipients of the Arizona School Board Association Honor Roll Award for governing board members who served 8 or more years in public education. Mrs. Kathy Bourgeous has been a valued member of the J.O. Combs Governing Board since 2005. She and her husband have 11 children and 28 grandchildren, many of whom have attended the J.O. He is active in his church and community, and currently sits on the board of the Combs Education Foundation. Dr. Kemp’s passion for students as they prepare for an ever-changing job market guides all his decisions. Thank you for your service to our students! We wish you well on your next endeavors!

Combs Performing Arts Center to open in early 2019! Ribbon cutting, open house set for Jan. 29 “I feel like this is the moment we’ve all been waiting for!” This statement, made by Combs High School Senior Niah Hudson, encapsulates the feelings of Combs High School students, staff, and community members as the J.O. Combs School District prepares to take possession of the new Combs Performing Arts Center in December. Staff will be moving classrooms over the winter break and classes will begin in the new building Jan. 8, 2019. “This auditorium is the culmination of so many hopes, dreams, and long hours of labor. I have seen students toil in our library, our “scene shop”, our various classrooms. Despite these conditions, my students have continued to strive to achieve their dreams of landing the leading role, performing at competitions, and fighting to get into college. This space validates those efforts and gives our community a place to see their students doing what they love: making great art,” said Nick Smith, Combs High School Stagecraft Teacher. Combs High School Orchestra and Choir Teacher, Keith Pennington, also shares, “I am so excited about our new facility because it is going to be monumental in providing amazing opportunities for my students. I feel like it will help change the mindset and the approach to the performance for both the students and the audience because it is a

space specifically designed for the performing arts. The performances in the gym have always had a great potential to be so much more, and now, with the new space, I feel like we will have the ability to take the programs I lead (orchestra, guitar, choir) in an even better direction. I am looking forward to everything that our Combs Fine Arts students will be able to accomplish in our new auditorium!” Here are some other fun facts about the amount of construction materials used to build the Combs Performing Arts Centers: • Concrete Masonry Unit Blocks – 59,781 • Concrete – 913 cubic yards • Metal Stud Framing – 4,425 Studs • Sheets of Drywall – 1,375 sheets • Gallons of Paint, interior – 625 gallons • Gallons of Paint, exterior – 500 gallons (including block fill) “I am thankful for the community’s support as this facility houses both our growing fine arts student programs and provides a venue for community use,” said J.O. Combs Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Gayle Blanchard. “Separate entrances allow for flexible use and scheduling between our school and community events. The acoustics of the house, integration of state-of-the-art

technology, and spectacular mountain views from the lobby have created a professional venue that meets the needs of our school and San Tan Valley community.” Join us for the Ribbon

Cutting Ceremony and Open House Jan. 29, 2019 from 4-7 p.m. and the Combs Performing Arts Center Premier Performances on Feb. 1, 2019 from 6-8 p.m.

Combs Middle School focuses on meaningful life experiences Students start ‘Coffee Cart Club’

Laura Ridge Principal

Combs Middle School Life Skills Class started a Coffee Cart Club this year. The Life Skills Class focuses on everyday skills, both academic and functional, for students with special needs. The purpose of the Coffee Cart Club is to empower the students with meaningful experiences that they could carry on past their time in junior high school. Donations

to create the club came from H&I Automotive in Mesa and Mander Cakes Distributions in Show Low. Each week, the students take coffee and tea drink orders from the school staff and deliveries occur on Friday morning. Through this venture, students are able to practice their social skills and money calculating which are essential for future independent living.
