She was raised in Bisbee, where she met the love of her life, Raul V. Beltran and married on Dec. 14, 1938, and was married until his death in 1992. While living in Bisbee, she worked as a baker until her and her family moved to Sonora, where she worked as a housekeeper. Later, in 1962, she and her family moved to Kearny. Rosa enjoyed watching her soap operas on TV and reading the newspaper, especially the Enquirer. In her spare time, she loved crocheting doilies and afghans, and would give them as gifts to the family. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Raul, son Raul (Titi), daughter Hilda Estrada and great-grandson, Paul A. Baez Jr. She leaves behind her sons, Patricio “Pat”, Steven “Moe” (Gloria), daughter Rebecca (the late Henry) Gaona, and daughter-in-law, Josie (the late Raul) Beltran. LETTER TO THE EDITOR

County to continue funding Kearny free dump day This letter is in partial response to Pat Payton’s letter to the editor, dated 11-15-2017, but it is more to provide additional information to Pinal County residents in the Copper Basin area about trash services available. Pinal County will continue to help the Town of Kearny with free dump days at the Kearny transfer station, since many folks utilizing the service are from rural county communities. The new program will provide this service every other month, since R.A.D. trash service is also providing Kearny residents with free bulk-trash dump days, pending Kearny Town Council approval. Additionally if you contact my Mammoth Office (520-8667830) and bring by or email us a current utility receipt, we will issue all Pinal County residents 3 free vouchers (for one full pickup truck each) to dump bulk-trash at the Dudleyville Landfill. For more information regarding the voucher program please contact my office. Thirdly, Pinal County intends to continue (annual or biannual) community clean-up days where all Pinal County residents can take as much bulk-trash, as they can fit in their trucks and/or trailers or both to the Dudleyville landfill. These clean-up days will continue to be advertised in the local paper and posted at the post offices. I and my colleagues on the Board of Supervisors are doing all that we can within our budget to discourage and prevent “wildcat” dumping in our deserts. Hope this information helps. Respectfully Yours, /s/ Pete Rios Pinal County Vice-Chair Dist. 1

BLM seeks public comment on proposed Ray Land Exchange with ASARCO mining company; Proposal could create Arizona jobs while improving public land access TUCSON, Ariz. – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is seeking public comment on a proposed land exchange that offers the potential to retain and create hundreds of Arizona mining jobs, as well as create new supporting jobs within nearby communities, while improving access for hunting and other recreation on public land in the state. Today’s release of a Draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) kicks off a 90-day comment period, beginning on Nov. 17, during which the BLM is collecting public input before moving forward in the decision making process.  Under the proposed Ray Land Exchange with ASARCO LLC, a mining company, the BLM would acquire 7,304 acres of land in Pinal and Mohave Counties, a move

that would consolidate checkerboard land ownership in those areas and improve access to existing public lands for hunting and other recreation. In exchange, the BLM would transfer 10,976 acres of public lands near ASARCO’s Ray Mine Complex and Copper Butte properties in Pinal and Gila Counties, near Kearny. ASARCO holds existing mining and mill site claims on those public lands near the mine and if approved, would likely expand mining operations.  â€œResponsible development of natural resources, coupled with shared conservation stewardship, has the potential to benefit local communities and America,â€? said BLM Gila District Manager Scott Feldhausen. “We are committed to hearing from local communities about the use of public lands in their backyards.â€?  Additionally, the BLM has scheduled a series of public information open houses in communities near the Ray Mine and the offered lands in Mohave County. During these open houses, the public can learn more about the proposed land exchange and provide comment on the draft Supplemental EIS. The open houses are scheduled for: ¡ Jan. 16, 5 –7:30 p.m., 701 N. Hwy. 177, Kearny, AZ 85137 ¡ Jan. 17, 5 – 7:30 p.m., 775 N. Greenfield Rd., Gilbert, AZ 85234 ¡ Jan. 18, 5 – 7:30 p.m., 401 N. ¡ Jan. 23, 5 – 7:30 p.m., 1971 Jagerson Ave., Kingman, AZ 86409 The proposed Ray Land Exchange has a long history. The original Ray Land Exchange Final EIS (FEIS) was issued by the BLM in 1999, and was approved on April 27, 2000. After 10 years of appeals and legal challenges, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals held that a major premise of the environmental impact analysis contained in the 1999 FEIS was flawed. The court recognized that ASARCO has the right to conduct mining and related activities on those public lands based on their existing claims, but required the BLM to go back and analyze the different environmental consequences of ASARCO’s likely mining operations, with or without the exchange.  The BLM completed the new Draft Supplemental EIS in order to satisfy this “with or withoutâ€? analysis of environmental impacts to public lands. It also updates information to reflect any changes in environmental conditions in the project area, as well as any applicable environmental laws or regulatory policies that may have come into effect since 1999. The Draft Supplemental EIS can be found at http://go.usa.gov/xn2FG. Comments and questions related to the Supplemental EIS may be submitted to Michael Werner, Project Manager, BLM Arizona State Office, One North Central Avenue, Suite 800, Phoenix, AZ 85004-4427 or emailed to RayLandExchange@blm.gov. Comments should be received by Feb. 16. About BLM The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land located primarily in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The agency’s mission is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of America’s public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. Diverse activities authorized on these lands generated $75 billion in sales of goods and services throughout the American economy in fiscal year 2016—more than any other agency in the Department of the Interior. These activities supported more than 372,000 jobs.

Finding Holiday Events Other Than Shopping

M

aybe it started in the 1930s. It was then that someone at an advertising company invented the slogan “Only 25 shopping days until Christmas.” The ad would repeat each day, dropping the number down, as an attempt to push people into buying things. Now we have Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday... which has been stretched to Cyber Week. The stores have had their special Christmas items on display since the beginning of November. The shopping season is now called “the holidays.” The shopping season has become the event. Aaaaarrgh! Still, more appropriate things than shopping can be found in our area. The Light Parade was one of them. The lighted floats are getting larger with sophisticated lighting, to the credit of all participants, and the arrival of Santa and Mrs. Claus is always a delight. This Saturday, Dec. 9, the Whistle Stop Café and the General Kearny Inn invite everyone to the hotel courtyard from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. for a visit with Santa and free s’mores and hot chocolate. There will be music provided by Porter’s Ghost. Bring a blanket or some lawn chairs and enjoy a good time with your friends. The following week, on Saturday, Dec. 16, the Kearny Sheriff’s Posse is sponsoring a Holiday Jamboree open to both members and non-members which will feature horse activities including barrels and poles (ribbons will be given). There will be a potluck meal and children’s activities. For a $5 entry you can take part in a poker ride/walk, and there will also be a

An informal public meeting hosted by Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 9, beginning at 9 a.m. to discuss the topic of ‘Understanding the Air Quality Forecast for the Hayden Area’. This meeting will be held at the Hayden Senior Center, 520 Velasco Ave. Residents attending will also have the opportunity to share coffee and doughnuts with the Director of ADEQ. ADEQ hopes to help residents understand and prepare for when there is an increased risk of lead in the air in the Hayden-Winkelman area. When the risk is low, “use general caution to protect yourself and family from lead”. When the risk is moderate, the very young, old, pregnant or sensitive will want to curtail extended or arduous outdoor activity. Extra cleaning should be done to keep the outside from coming in and staying. When the risk is high, these things apply but even more so, and doors and windows should be kept closed. Wet dusting and mopping, in the appropriate areas, is also called for.

To find out the day’s forecast, visit online at azdeq.gov/air-forecasting. To find out what flavor the doughnuts are, you have to attend the meeting.

Some Memoirs of Hayden

M

y brother, Bill Kishbaugh, has lived for a long time at Dripping Springs which is north of Winkelman, Arizona, and the title of his book is MEMOIRS OF HAYDEN, ARIZONA 1936 - 1950. It with its photos sure does bring back lots of memories of the place we called home. Although my children, Ann, Francie, and Neal, were raised along Aravaipa Creek, they had been able to experience Hayden, although there had been many changes since I had lived there and gone to school there. Just one of the many pleasant memories is when we held my daughter Ann’s fifth birthday party in 1952 at my parents’ Asarco-rented house on Hayden’s Smelter Side. This was not long before my parents had to leave after my dad retired from his Asarco office job as Timekeeper. The young girls at that birthday party were the local Hayden girls Jean Harrington, Marsha Goodridge, Beverly Willard, Susie Coleman, Waka Hunt, Andrea Hall, and Shauna Griffith. Of course, my daughters Ann and Francie were there. Francie and Shauna Griffith were about three years old then. In 1956, Hayden was incorporated, and in a contest by Look Magazine and the Municipal League, it was selected as an All-American City. I am glad that

my children had been able to attend Hayden schools. I am also glad that as they got older they were good to keep in contact with me despite their busy lives. Really enjoyed is when I hear from my grandchildren and see and talk to their children! I am often called GG by them, and my oldest grandchild refers to me as Goose, but there may be other names that I don’t know about, or want to know about! After all, grandmas aren’t supposed to know everything, are they? They just worry!

Technology, Engineering, and Computer Information Systems Pathways at PINAL COUNTY, Ariz. – The technology, engineering, and computer information systems pathways at Central Arizona College (CAC) are developed to serve the students and the needs of the community and businesses in Pinal County and beyond. The goal in designing these pathways was to provide students a flexible and equitable approach to obtaining skills and knowledge that will help them attain their education goals. The flexibility of the pathways is reflected in the various entry and exit points into and out of the technology, engi-

neering, and information systems programs. The equity aspect lies in providing students awareness of possible futures, which they may not have thought about, and the opportunity of low risk exploration. Students in Pinal County high schools interested in learning skills and obtaining certificates or associate’s degrees in advanced technology education can take various technology related curriculum offered at CAC. The curriculum in these fields have been carefully crafted through input from industry in the county to ensure that students obtain skills and knowledge that will meet the needs of the employers in the county. Students within the technology area, however, will also have an opportunity to explore the possibility of entering an engineering transfer program or a computer information systems program where they can obtain certificates, associate’s degrees, or transfer. This means that technology students, with a minimum of risk, can test their ambitions and decide whether an engineering transfer program or a computer information systems program could be a better alternative for them. Similarly, students who enter engineering from high school, but find it unsatisfactory, can easily switch to the myriad of offerings in the advanced technologies or computer information

systems. With CIS Network Administration, Cyber-Operations and Informatics, students have a transfer path to UA South, which they can complete without leaving Pinal County. An instructor from UA South provides face-to-face instruction at CAC while another part of the program is covered with online classes. Although technology and the computer information systems are established programs at CAC, engineering is new. The engineering transfer degree uses a guided pathways approach and provides students the opportunity to complete almost two years of their four-year engineering degree at CAC. All the courses taken in the engineering pathway at CAC will be 100% transferrable to ASU and NAU. All but one course is currently transferrable to UA. This means a significant tuition savings for students and their families, which makes the engineering degree financially more accessible to many students in Pinal and nearby counties. Besides the various mathematics, science, and computer information systems courses needed for the first two years of engineering, the new engineering curriculum has a redesigned Introduction to Engineering (EGR102) course, and two new courses that are being

Central Arizona College offered in 2018. The EGR 102 course redesign provides a heavily project-based approach that integrates engineering and advanced technologies. This means that students will be able to practice the engineering design process by working with instructors in engineering and technology on various projects in diverse technical fields. This approach will expose students to both well-structured and real-world projects, broaden their perspective about engineering and technologies, help them identify areas of academic interest, and provide them a broader perspective and awareness of the vast possibilities in engineering and technology education at CAC. The new 2018 engineering course offerings at CAC also include two new engineering courses that are transferrable to Arizona State University and Northern Arizona University: (1) Digital Design - EGR120, which is a required course for electrical, software and computer engineering and computer science students; and (2) Circuits I - EGR222, a course which students in aerospace, civil, mechanical, biomedical, electrical, software and computer engineering are required to take. In summary, the technology, engineering, and information systems pathways at CAC provide students a number of entry and exit points that lead to certificates, associate degrees, or transfer to four-year institutions, all within Pinal County. The quality and diversity of offerings in these technical pathways make it possible for employers to find a broad range of local talent within the county; it is also likely to make it attractive for new businesses to move to Pinal County.

New Hayden Police Chief meets students Hayden-Mammoth Police Chief Tamatha Villar visited all of the students in the Hayden-Winkelman School District on Thursday, Nov. 30. She discussed the importance for all students to set goals and make smart choices. Chief Villar informed students that people who set goals are more likely to be successful and stay out of trouble. One of the hot items today that law enforcement is facing is social media. She discussed the some of the dos and don’ts related to social media and how to avoid peer pressure.

“One wrong click of a send button can change your life forever and could have lasting consequences,” she said. She told the students that her goal is to meet every student and begin to build a positive relationship at the school and in the community. She hopes to be a visible and assessable Police Chief who can support students and make this community a safe and healthy place to live. “I know it begins with our children and that is why I am meeting and sharing my life experiences and support for them,” Villar said.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas (in Kearny)

Ray Mine and union employees continue to support town of Kearny with any needs necessary. Last week, a crew headed to Kearny and installed Alden Road with the town’s Christmas decorations. ‘Thank you to Mike Kotraba and the ASARCO crew for bringing the man-lift to help put up the Town of Kearny’s Christmas decorations. Thank you for all of your support from the Town of Kearny.’
