OBITUARIES Robert ‘Bob’ Walter Chastain Robert “Bob” Walter Chastain passed away peacefully on the morning of Jan. 5, 2019 in his Chandler home at the age of 95.

Bob is survived by sister, Mary Lou Page; children, Linda Prinz, Brenda Garcia, Bobette VanWallene (Matt) and Chandra McDowell (Jim); 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Bob is preceded in death by wife Phosia Chastain, sister Betty Schwartz, brother James Chastain and great-grandchild River VanWallene.

Bob was born on Dec. 1, 1923 in Silt, Colorado to Maude and Walter Chastain. He moved to Tolleson, Arizona in 1932. Bob began his educational career at the Tempe Normal School on a basketball scholarship. In 1942, Bob enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps where he served as a U.S. Marine Raider in World War II in the South Pacific.

During his service he was awarded two Purple Hearts.

Upon returning to the states, Bob continued his education where he played the first basketball game under the new mascot, Arizona State Sun Devils. He married his college sweetheart, Phosia Smith, a teacher. In the years to follow, Bob was a teacher/superintendent at Stanfield School, Superintendent at Ray Unified Schools for 29 years, served one term as an Arizona State Legislator, and served one term as an Arizona State Senator.

Bob was a dedicated individual who loved his family and who was passionate about education and making a difference. His family remembers him as a kind, generous and hardworking man who encouraged and inspired all who knew him.

A celebration of life will be held on March 23, 2019 at the Ray Unified School Cafeteria at noon. All are welcome

Richard ‘Dicky’ Rivera Bracamonte Richard “Dicky” Rivera Bracamonte, of Kearny, Arizona, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 8 2019. He was 84 years old.

Richard was born on Aug. 19, 1934 to Roberto and Magdalena Bracamonte in Winkelman, Arizona. He was a graduate of Hayden High School. He attended Arizona State University, where he played baseball and began his lifelong love of Sun Devil sports.

In 1954, he started his 33-year-old career in the mining industry as an employee of Kennecott Copper and Asarco Mining Company. His proudest accomplishment was marrying Gloria “Laly” Padilla and building the family that he loved and treasured above all.

Richard is survived by his wife of 64 years, Gloria “Laly” and his children, Richard (Carmen), Lorrie Celis (Peter), Alex (Lisa) and Ernie (Melissa). He also is survived by his brother Dave (Lupe) and sister Angie Chavez (Rex). He will be lovingly remembered by his 14 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild, many nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends.

We were blessed to learn many valuable lessons from him throughout his life. Among them cooking the best beans in town, the virtue of saving everything, and loving unconditionally. He was a lifelong fan of the New York Yankees and the ASU Sun Devils – FORKS UP! Services were held on Wednesday, Jan. 16, at the Infant Jesus of Prague Catholic Church in Kearny, Arizona. He was laid to rest at Mountain View Cemetery in Hayden, Arizona.

Students from Hayden High School and Ray High School completed OSHA training last week.

The Arizona Department of Education industrial technology program supervisor and approved OSHA trainer, Jamie Miller provided an OSHA training at the Ray School District for students in the Cobre Valley Institute of Technology (CVIT) Welding Program. These students are developing the skills and completing the safety certifications that will prepare them for the hightech industrial jobs and receiving college credits.

The Ray-Hayden welding instructor Sam Colton has created partnerships with industry leaders that provide grants and hands-on internships that will lead to excellent career opportunities in the area and around the world for his students. The Ray-Hayden Welding Program is part of the CVIT JTED.

Rios sponsors change to amendment requiring all supervisors to vote, not abstain On Jan. 9, 2019 the Pinal County Board of Supervisors discussed and approved an amendment to their General Board Meeting Rules which were originally adopted in June of 2010.

One of the proposed rules sparked a discussion led by Vice Chairman Pete Rios. The change would allow Board members to “Abstain.” from voting at anytime.

Pioneer Days Queen Contestants Sought

The Pinal County Waste Disposal Voucher Program will begin on Jan. 7, 2019. Please remember that in order to obtain vouchers those interested must present a current utility bill dated within the last 60 days with their name and physical address imprinted on it. No vouchers will be issued without proper documentation.

Three vouchers will be given and they will be good from Jan. 7, 2019 until Dec. 31, 2019. If those participating own more than one residence they can only obtain vouchers for the primary residence. Vouchers can be used at the Oracle Transfer Station and are good for a truck load of up to 750 lbs. or the Dudleyville Landfill and are good for a truck load of up to three cubic yards.

Vouchers will be issued according to the name that appears on the utility bill and that person must be present when redeeming the vouchers at the Oracle Transfer Station or Dudleyville Landfill.

The Kearny Elks will be hosting a Super Bowl party for members and their guests on Sunday, Feb. 3. Game begins at 4:30 p.m. Doors will open at 4 p.m. There will be hot dogs, chili and other food items available. A football pool will also be available for those who chose to enter and 100% will go to the winner. There will be a $5 cover charge per person.

According to records, never in Pinal County history had a board member been able to abstain from voting without abiding by Conflict of Interest protocol.

“My concern is with the public that we represent. We all represent approximately 100,000 people, we are almost to

500,000 in population in Pinal County and I don’t suspect that they wanted us to represent them up here by saying I don’t want to vote on that one, I am going to abstain. They want us to either vote to the affirmative or the negative,” Rios explained.

The board discussed the reformation of the rules and unanimously voted in favor of Rios’ proposed language, which is as follows.

All board members present at the time the question is

called for are required to cast an AYE or NAY vote, unless they have previously declared a conflict of interest and submitted such in writing to the Clerk of the Board.

Chairman Todd House shared his thoughts, saying, “I appreciate your effort on this … I am in total agreement with going forward on the guidelines that you’ve set forth.”

Those new Pinal County General Board Meeting Rules are complete and in effect immediately.

Injuries put Hayden wrestlers’ chances at state tournament in jeopardy

By Andrew Luberda Copper Basin News Hayden wrestling head coach John Estrada believes as many as four Lobos have a “chance” to qualify for the State Wrestling Tournament in Prescott next month. Unfortunately, senior Joel Rodriguez (18 – 3, 220), junior Peter Kame (26 – 7, 195), senior Noah Monroy (13 – 6, 182) and senior Omar Lopez (24 – 9, 132) are all

currently battling injuries but expect to return to action soon. They’ll need to with just four weeks left in the season.

“They plan to come back for sectionals,” Estrada told Copper Basin News. “It’ll be tough.”

The sectionals will take place at Mogollon High School with the top-four placers in each weight class advancing to the state tournament.

8. Absolutely would enjoy working with town residents who are considered customers of the Town of Kearny.

9. A high level of expertise in using Caselle software would be extremely valuable.

10. Has a valid Arizona Driver’s License.

Additional Key Requirements: 1. A four-year degree in Accounting is preferred; a minimum of a two-year Associate Degree in Accounting is required.

2. A minimum of 3-5 years’ experience as a Town Clerk is required.

Ray boys, girls defeat Hayden

By Andrew Luberda Copper Basin News Both the Ray boys and girls’ basketball teams defeated rival Hayden last Friday in Kearny. The No. 7-ranked Bearcats defeated the Lobos, 66 – 36, while the No. 6 Lady Bearcats prevailed, 56 – 35.

The Lady Cats remained undefeated in the 1A East Region following their win.

Junior Shelby Yocum posted a doubledouble, scoring a game-high 27 points – nearly half of her team’s scoring total – to go along with 11 rebounds, nine steals and four assists. Senior Tara Lorona finished with nine points and seven rebounds.

Sophomore Chelsea Flores and senior

Julie Meza added five rebounds apiece.

Meza also had four steals in the win.

Chasity Kelley, a sophomore, ended with six points and three steals.

The Bearcats improved to 5 – 1 in 1A East Region action following Thursday’s lopsided win.

Two Cats scored in double figures, including senior Stone Patterson, who finished with a game-high 19 points, and sophomore Cody Hickingbottom, who added 10 points.

Alex Bravo, a sophomore, and senior Anthony Lopez had eight and seven points, respectively. Jaden Pace and Romeo Varley, both seniors, had six points apiece in the Cats’ 11th win of the season.
