Superior approves community development agreement with Resolution Copper The Town of Superior is pleased to announce the approval of an economic and community development agreement with Resolution Copper for 2018. The Town Council voted unanimously to approve the agreement at its January meeting. The grant in the amount of $25,000 will allow the Town to conduct a hotel feasibility study and develop an architectural design and plan for the construction of a Multi-Generation Center/Library. “This funding is necessary for the Town to move forward on two of our goals which have been set by the council. As our community grows and becomes more of a destination we will need additional hotels and community facilities to serve our residents and businesses,” said Mayor Mila Besich-Lira. Resolution Copper Project Director, Andrew Lye said, “We’re proud to be partnering with the Town of Superior on these exciting initiatives. It’s an example of where we continue to work together evaluating projects which have mutual benefits for the residents of Superior and Resolution Copper.” The hotel feasibility study will be managed by Rebuild Superior, Inc., a local non-profit community development organization, which will develop the scope of work and

manage the consulting firm hired for the study. “We have learned that a hotel feasibility study is required in order to discuss development opportunities with potential hotel operators,” said Deb McKee of Rebuild Superior, Inc. “and we look forward to working on this key Town objective.” The Town’s engineering firm, Willdan, will work closely with the Community Development Committee on the potential site and design of the Multi-Generation Center/ Library. The council voted unanimously to contract with both Rebuild Superior, Inc. and Willdan Engineering for

The Panthers have only two wins in their last seven games, including a 50 – 7 victory at Phoenix Day School for the Deaf last Friday. Third-ranked Ft. Locals attend Ray Land Exchange public hearing By Mila Besich-Lira Copper Area News Local residents of the Copper Basin area attended the Ray Land Exchange/Plan Amendment public hearing, hosted by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) last week. Those in attendance had the opportunity to talk one on one with BLM representatives on the land exchange and express their concerns and support of the exchange. The BLM has opened a 90-day comment period that will allow the public to officially comment on the exchange, the comment period will end on Feb. 16, 2018. Comments can be submitted online via email at blm_ az_raylandexchange@blm.gov or you may send written comments to BLM Arizona State Office ATTN: Ray Land Exchange, 1 North Central Ave. Suite 800 Phoenix, Arizona 85004-4427. All comments must be received by February 16, 2018. The public hearing was held as part of the public participation and comment period following the release of the Draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). Many local residents requested more information on recreational access to the White Wilderness area and other recreation sites near the exchange locations.

The Town of Kearny, in their support letter asked for ASARCO, the Town of Kearny and the BLM to work on road improvements to ensure access to these important recreation sites. The land exchange is currently going through the National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA) review. The NEPA process allows the BLM to evaluate the affect of the following: Biological Resources, Water Resources, Air Quality, Mineral Resources, Land Use, Access and Recreation, Wilderness Resources/Special Management Areas, Cultural Resource and Socioeconomic Conditions. ASARCO is offering 7,304 acres of private land for 10,976 acres of BLM-administered public lands. These public lands are near or adjacent to existing mining operations at the Ray Mine Complex near Kearny. The 7,304 acres of private lands include lands in Pinal and Mohave counties. If the land exchange is approved the private lands will be added into BLM Managed public lands. The lands in Pinal County include, the Gila River at Cochran Parcel, which is 320 acres and contains a segment of the Gila River Riparian Management Area. The majority of the lands in the exchange are located in Mohave County. Those parcels include the Knisely Ranch Parcels (160 acres) , Sacramento Valley Park (120 acres), Tomlin Parcel (320

acres) and McCracken Mountain Parcels (6,384 acres). Some elected leaders in Mohave County have expressed concern that the exchange adds more public lands to their county which will not be able to be developed for commercial purposes. Both the Kearny and Hayden Town councils have approved letters of support along with the Copper Corridor Economic Development Coalition and the Southern Gila County Economic Development Corporation. The 10,976 acres that ASARCO would receive from the exchange will include 8,196 acres that would include a surface and mineral estate, 2,780 acres are listed as mineral estate only. These lands will be referred to as “Selected Public Lands” according the BLM and they are listed as desirable to ASARCO because they are adjacent to or near ASARCO’s current mining operations and they currently hold valid mining claims on these “Selected Public Lands.” ASARCO is expected to conduct mining operations on these lands. The public hearing in Kearny was the first in a series of meetings. Public hearings were held in Tucson, Gilbert and Kingman, Arizona. To learn more about the exchange or to download a digital copy of the EIS visit the BLM online at: http://go.usa.gov/xn2FG

Daystar Studios - Marilee Lasch T

he three story home at the corner of Lime and Magma is more than just a home. It is also the location for Daystar Studios owned by Marilee Lasch. When Marilee came to Superior, 13 years ago, she said that her heart strings tugged at her. Following her heart, she decided to move to Superior, knowing that it had the potential to become the next destination for artists and tourists. Marilee offers art classes, custom art design and holds a few events throughout the year attracting hundreds of people to visit her home. Her home as been featured in Arizona Highways and has been on the Superior Chamber of Commerce Home tours several times. One of the classes that Marilee teaches is a six-week course called “The Artists Way.” The curriculum is designed to help participants become more comfortable and creative in making art. Each week they complete a project while working on basic techniques. She also teaches mosaic tile classes where participants can make custom tea trays or other items. Her classes are often the best kept secret: she has offered classes on how to make Fairy Gardens, holiday crafts and occasionally teaches oil painting. During the 2018 Home Tour (this weekend) Marilee will open her home to sell and display her work along with the art of five other artists. The art show will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. this Saturday and Sunday. Visitors can also get a quick peek of her home although full tours will not be available. Marilee can help anyone with custom murals, paintings, beaded jewelry or mosaic tile projects. Locally she has designed and completed the mural on the Dalton Realty Building and she worked with the Headstart and Superior Chamber of Commerce on the desert landscape mural on the Payer Motors Building on the west end of Main Street. She has also volunteered to help restore the mural on the Senior Center building that was designed and installed in the late 90s by local high school students. In December, she hosts a Holiday Craft Boutique and in the fall she hosts a labyrinth walk which features local musicians at her home/studio. She plans to add a story telling event and sessions in the near future. Marilee has a big heart for Superior and enjoys sharing her local art talents with many groups and organizations.

The home of Marilee Lasch and the location for Daystar Studios. She partnered with Awesome Possum to raise money for school art programs by painting chairs to be auctioned off. Her advice to other artists and those who are considering

art businesses “Just keep going. Never give up.” she explained. She also stressed the importance of publicity and networking with other artists.

The “In Your Biz” column is sponsored weekly by the Superior Chamber of Commerce in an effort to further promote their business members. To learn more about the Superior Chamber of Commerce you can visit their website www.superiorarizonachamber.org or call them at 520-689-0200. The Chamber meets the third Wednesday of every month at their building 165 Main St. in Superior, Arizona. Those planning on attending the Chamber luncheons do need to RSVP prior to the meeting, please call Deb McKee to RSVP at 520-827-1773. A

summary of Ezekiel 37:11-14 says: ‘We are dead and our hope is gone.’ The Lord says, ‘I will open your graves and bring you back, then you will know that I am the Lord and that I have spoken!’ It doesn’t matter how far down we are or go; God is capable of bringing us back to life. He is the one who created life By Dennis Van Gorp by breathing into us the Family Life Christian Center breath of life through the Holy Spirit. Therefore, He is ‘everywhere present’ and always with us. We are not alone, unless we choose to walk away from Him. But realize, nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight; He sees all and knows all. If it seems as though your hope is dashed to pieces and gone, read through the Psalms and the New Testament Gospels. You will find a purpose for your life and a reason to hope. The Lord will speak peace into you and fill you with strength for each day. You are alive!
