Family pleads for answers in couple’s death, one year later Pinal County Victim Services, Silent Witness and the family are offering an award of $5,000 for any information leading to an arrest in a violent double murder in Mammoth, Arizona. On Jan. 31, 2017, Mark Reynoso, 34, and Maria De Santiago, 28, were brutally gunned down at their home located at 485 S. Main in Mammoth. Mammoth Police Department received a call about shots fired in the area at 11:12 a.m., but could not locate where the shots originated. At 11:56 a.m., family members called 911 after discovering the bodies of Mark and Maria. Investigators found their bodies outside, just a few feet away from their home. Pinal County Sheriff’s Detective, who were called in to investigate the homicides, believe that the suspect or suspects drove to the victim’s home in a midsize sedan or midsize pickup truck. “He was brutally murdered. We don’t know who did this or why, but they took a good man from everybody. He helped everyone in the community. I don’t understand how anyone could be so cruel,” Laney Reynoso, mother of

Mark Reynoso. “We need help from the public to find out who did this. We don’t have answers and we need help. She was a great woman, a mother of three, with no enemies. Not knowing is driving us crazy,” Marcela De Santiago, sister of Maria De Santiago. If you have any information that would lead to an arrested please call the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office at 520-866-5105 or Silent Witness at 480-Witness or 1-800343-TIPS.

Panthers may have lost more than game against NPP By Andrew Luberda Copper Area News The Superior boys’ basketball team suffered what could turn out to be a very costly loss last Tuesday at home, falling to No. 31-ranked North Phoenix Prep, 64 – 59. Tuesday’s result combined with a lopsided 105 – 38 defeat at No. 2 NFL Yet Academy three nights later has the now No. 20 Panthers on the outside looking in at one of the 16 available playoff berths. With two games remaining in the regular season – at Ray and home versus Hayden – the Panthers are essentially in the playoffs now. A loss in either game eliminates any slim chance at a spot in the state tournament. “Inexperience is our biggest obstacle,” Superior head

coach Ryan Palmer told the Superior Sun. “The kids just need to play and gain experience. Through that experience our confidence will build.” The Panthers are not at full strength, there is no disputing that fact. Adam Navarrette and Jesus Castellanos – both projected starters – missed the entire year with injuries. Additionally, there isn’t a senior on the roster, and five freshmen contribute as many minutes as the five juniors on the team, according to Palmer. Two sophomores – Sam Lopez and Daniel McConnell – log their share of minutes as well. “Our fundamentals are lacking,” Palmer said. “It’s because we are asking very inexperienced players to compete against senior-loaded teams.” In last Tuesday’s game against the Gladiators, junior

Cedric Mendoza (14) and Jared Moreno (12) combined for 26 points. Kale Major, another junior added eight points and Lopez finished with nine. Mendoza grabbed 11 rebounds, recording a doubledouble in the loss. Moreno hauled in seven rebounds and freshman Dominic Hernandez had five rebounds. From a win and loss point of view, Palmer called the season “disappointing,” but he is encouraged about the future. He believes there is silver lining to this season. “Although this year was not up to the standard of excellence our program has competed at over the last few years, the future is bright,” Palmer said. “Hopefully, by taking our lumps this season the kids become more driven than ever towards reaching their full potential.” Up next: Feb. 2 vs. Hayden at 7 p.m.

Annual Florence Home Tour set for Feb. 10 According to past visitor evaluations, the Florence Home Tour is one of the best in Arizona. Comments included those who praised the layout and quality of the historic homes to the small details such as available food vendors and accompanying events. The 33rd Annual Historic Florence Home Tour on Saturday, Feb. 10, 2018 should continue this reputation as a quality event. The tour is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Day-of ticket sales begins at 9:30 a.m. at Jaques Square which is located at 291 N. Main St. Visitors may walk the tour route or ride trolleys to the outlying historical structures. Information will be provided by tour guides on each of the three trolleys. The theme for the Home Tour, “Florence: An Arizona Hidden Treasure” reveals the little-known intriguing and entertaining facts about the town contained within the walls of these homes. In addition to the Home Tour, the Maricopa High School Theatre Company will perform three re-enactments of

A Help Button Should Go Where You Go!

“The Baron of Arizona.” The performances will be at the McFarland State Park at 9:30 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. McFarland State Park is located at Ruggles and Main Streets in Florence. The Theatre Company is led by Arizona Master Teacher, Cynthia Calhoun whose theatre company has received state and national recognition for its performances, including the recent, “The Taming of the Shrew.” At 2 p.m., the Pinal County Historical Museum will host a special presentation of the Wild Horse and Burro Inmate Program. This is a fascinating example of government agencies partnering to not only care and train wild horses and burros for adoption, but also gives select Department of Corrections inmates the opportunity to care and train the animals. Program supervisor Randy Helm will discuss the program and present a special display of saddles and cowboy gear, from a by-gone era. The Florence Arts and Culture Commission will offer a Quick Draw Artist Contest and Silent Auction at 10:30

Juan’s Central Bakery reopens

A countless number of residents of Superior and the Copper Corridor region often share stories of the wonderful Mexican pastries that were made at the Central Bakery in Superior. From Pan de Huevo, Pink Cookies, Empandas, Cochitos, you know the really good stuff! Great memories surrounding these delicious treats continued to be shared since the bakery closed when Mr. Juan Cardenas became ill. Everyone wished the bakery would re-open one day. Juan’s granddaughter Maria Hjelle maintained the

recipes and this weekend she and her family and extended family celebrated the grand re-opening of Juan’s Central Bakery. The process to rehab the building and bring it up to code was a lengthily process but finally the bakery is open. Many waited in line up to ninety minutes to purchase a delicious treat and many were waiting outside on Saturday morning for the grand opening. Those in the crowd were sharing their special stories and talking about the

nostalgic smells that permeated the neighborhood, just as they did when Juan operated the bakery. The lines lasted for both days. The bakery is now open full time and they recommend following their page on Facebook “Juan’s Central Bakery” to learn what time the various pastries will be available. The bakery is located in the Y Intersection of Pinal Avenue and Santa Rita Street, just north of Main St. in Superior.

Superior swells at 10th Annual Home Tour The 10th Annual Superior Chamber of Commerce Home Tour, Art and Antique Show proved to be another successful event. This year the tour featured several homes that were once deemed too deteriorated to fix. An interesting home on the tour included the two-story custom “tiny home” that was built, the home was so tiny that only four people could tour the home at the same time. With a growing partnership with the Boyce Thompson Arboretum, the “Hill House” which is home of the Director was opened for all to see. That home featured expansive views of Superior, Tonto National Forest and the Arboretum properties. The event goes on each year with with a committed committee who plans and organizes the event and close to 100 volunteers help to staff the event. This year with the Home Tour received much publicity from the Phoenix Home and Garden’s Magazine, The Arizona Republic and the Arizona Office of Tourism. Businesses were busy and restaurant seats were filled with visitors and locals who were out to enjoy the tour!

Town of Superior Public Works

T

he Town of Superior has a variety of services from a public Library and Pool, Police, Fire, and Administration. Many of those services are ones that are most commonly understood. Public Works is often a department that is essential but often goes unnoticed until a person experiences something like a pothole, weeds on the street or event planning. The Town of Superior Public Works department is led by Anthony Huerta. He and his crew are responsible for

the day to day maintenance and upkeep of all town property. Roads, parks, trash cans on the street, the US 60 rest stop, library, senior center, swimming pool, town hall, cemetery, wastewater treatment plant and transfer station. The list goes on and on. From special events to special projects, this crew has much to manage. In addition to their full time and part time employees, the Town is able to utilize a crew of nine inmates to help support the department.

Over the past year, the Public Works Crew has worked along side Town Management and Engineers to prepare and manage several major road projects including the removal of the bump on Sunset along with resurfacing and crack sealing of Panther Drive, Richard Ave., Palo Verde, Golf Course Dr. and O’Donnell Dr. These projects are prioritized through the Pavement Improvement Plan which the Council approved in 2017. There is also the everyday maintenance such as pothole repair on the streets. In 2017, over 120 yards of asphalt was used to fill potholes and make repairs. One of their biggest accomplishments the entire

crew is proud of is the major clean up and improvements to the US 60 Park. Over the past year, the crew along with a special crew of inmates have cleared several acres of brush, repaired park equipment and benches and have started to make the park usable once again. In the coming year, they plan to continue cleaning the brush and develop more walking trails through the perimeter of the park. In addition to the repairs at the US 60 Park Public Works has supported the improvements at Besich Park under the leadership of Veto Cervantes. The department also operates the Transfer Station and manages and maintains the wastewater treatment plant.

Essential town functions, which help to ensure a healthy and safe community. One less fun job is the maintenance and clean up of the US 60 Rest Stop. New improvements and hours at the rest stop have helped to reduce vandalism and the Town has reported that in the last year there have been no major complaints from the public in the past year about the rest stop. The Public Works crew is looking forward to working on the development of more trails throughout the town and continued improvements to the parks in Superior. The crew is also important to all events in Town from helping to set up road closures to ensuring the area near the

events are clean and secure. The crew all agreed that they enjoy seeing their work make a difference to take care of “our town”. Their jobs have created new opportunities for each of them to learn how to use new equipment. One thing they all mentioned was they wanted the public to know that they are working to get to all the concerns that come their way. SunZia funds Arizona wildlife/ natural resource efforts

Developing America’s largest untapped copper resource cannot happen without the involvement of our local people.

18 Active community partnerships in 2017

• Fostering economic growth

In 2017 we invested more than $1 million in partnerships to foster economic growth, create jobs, fund education, and advance environmental initiatives. We also spent over $6.5 million with our business partners in Arizona’s Copper Triangle - more than $2 million of that in Superior!

• Creating jobs • Funding education • Advancing environmental initiatives

The SunZia Southwest Transmission Project (SunZia) presented a $300,000 check last week to the Arizona Game and Fish Department (AZGFD) to help fund watering stations for wildlife in remote areas, including locations within Pinal County, one of which is located between Superior and Kearny. The funds are part of a broad joint conservation effort by SunZia and AZGFD to help enhance wildlife habitat in southeastern Arizona. The effort was the result of a comprehensive wildlife preservation agreement executed by the parties in Jan., 2016. “SunZia is proud to be part of this dynamic public-private partnership,” said Tom Wray, project manager for SunZia. “We look forward to continuing these conservation efforts with the Game and Fish Department to ensure that Arizona’s critical wildlife habitats are preserved.” “Today’s focus on the importance of strengthening water catchments is just the tip of a revolutionary partnership between a private energy project developer and Arizona government,” said Ty Gray, director of the Arizona Game & Fish Department. “The partnership includes a wide range of protective measures that provide one of the most progressive plans for mitigating and conserving Arizona’s wildlife resources and the habitat on which they depend.” “Pinal County is excited to join with SunZia and Game and Fish in this important effort,” said Supervisor Steve Miller, chairman of the Pinal County Board of Supervisors. “Wildlife domains are critical to Pinal County’s quality of life, and materially contribute to outdoor recreation and our tourism industries. Today those habitats have been strengthened thanks to the hard work of SunZia and Arizona Game and Fish. Because of the cooperation of Game and Fish and SunZia’s donation, additional water catchments will be installed to assist wildlife during our drought periods.” Pattern Energy is a windpower developer and will ship windpower over SunZia’s transmission line. Adam Cernea Clark, manager of Environmental & Natural Resources for Pattern stated “Pattern Energy joins with SunZia, Game and Fish and Pinal County elected officials in taking this important step towards the preservation of Arizona’s important wildlife habitat. Combining renewable energy resources with an historic wildlife preservation agreement will ensure that SunZia becomes a model for energy delivery in the Desert Southwest.” The agreement specified funding for renovation of multiple watering stations, called catchments, used by wildlife, especially in times of drought. Several of the catchment locations are located within Pinal County. The SunZia/AGFD comprehensive mitigation agreement includes a total of 49 measures that include protection plans for migratory birds, the Southwestern Willow Flycatcher, Sonoran Desert Tortoise, Black-tailed Prairie Dogs, Gila Monsters, Burrowing Owls, Kit Foxes, as well as extensive activities including monitoring, revegetation and habitat restoration. A copy of the agreement can be found here: www.SunZia.net/AGFD
