Ruth K. Rupert Ruth K. Rupert, 94 years young, also affectionately known as Mom, Grandma, Mama, Grandma GG or Grandma Choo-Choo, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2019. She passed peacefully and was surrounded by family. Ruth was born in Hamilton, Pennsylvania on Jan. 3, 1925. She was the youngest of 10 siblings. Her early years were spent on the family farm, where she always prided herself in working hand-in-hand next to her father. She used to proudly say that her dad finally got the son he wanted when she was born, because she would rather work outside with him, than learning to cook in the house. Ruth was preceded in death by her father, Robert Hamilton Sheesley, and mother, Lossie Delo, as well as, her husband, James F. Rupert, her grandson, Mark Rupert, and greatgrandson, Mark Chelgren. She is survived by her three children, James Rupert (Nola), Thomas Rupert (Brenda), and Marilyn Hickson (Robert), as well as many grandchildren, greatgrandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Ruth loved her family and enjoyed getting everyone together for holidays and cooking many wonderful meals. She had a special place in her heart for all her “Grands” and would always
give “practice presents” the night before Christmas to get them ready for the real thing. While in Kearny, Ruth worked at various establishments. But was most proud of Rupert’s Drapery, where she sewed many beautiful pieces, for years, which could be seen all over town. She also volunteered at the Hand Me Up Shop. Ruth loved the Lord and was a regular at her church. She was a devoted Christian and even when she could no longer get to church, she continued to read her bible and follow HIS word. When it was too difficult for her to be alone, she moved to Buckeye, AZ to live with her daughter, Marilyn and son-in-law, Bobby, where she lived out her remaining years. The family expresses their sincere appreciation to the staff at Serenity Hospice and for all the love and support from those calling and sending their condolences. The family will be holding a Celebration of Life at a later date and all are welcome. We will reach out with details at a later date.

CASA of Gila County celebrates National Social Workers Month (Globe, AZ –March 1, 2019) When children are in danger and families are in crisis it’s often up to the social workers of the world to find the resources and support to help which is why during March, National Professional Social Work Month, CASA of Gila County applauds the social workers our volunteers interact with every day who are working hard to make a difference for families in Arizona. “Social workers have a tough job and we are grateful for the work they do to help children and families within our community,” said Emily Leverance. “Social workers play a vital role in the child welfare system and we are grateful to
work beside such a hard-working team.” Court Appointed Special Advocates are not social workers, but they are highly-trained volunteers who act as the eyes and ears of the court on cases of children in foster care. They visit with the children regularly and collect information that helps the court make more informed decisions. CASA advocates work closely with social workers and other members of the child’s team to ensure the child has their needs met while in foster care. Throughout Arizona there are children currently in foster care that need a consistent, caring adult in their corner
and there are many ways you can get involved in making sure those children are heard. If you’re a social worker at heart, becoming a CASA advocate may be a great way to make a difference. Volunteers are always needed, and no specific background is required. To volunteer, applicants must be 21 years or older, pass a thorough background check and complete 30 hours of pre-service training. CASA of Gila County is grateful for all the professionals who’ve dedicated their careers to advocating for children. For more information on the CASA Program visit CASAofGilaCounty.org.
LETTER TO THE EDITOR Trump Tax and Tax Refunds
FLORENCE, AZ – It’s a subject not thought of in this area of the state, but our recent winter storm has brought up the subject of the dangers of snow and ice to your home. We do not have many high pitched “A” Frame homes in Pinal County with many of them flat or slightly pitched roofs. Home owners with those flat or slightly pitched roofs should understand that their roofs are at the greatest risk of buckling under heavy snow and ice accumulations. If heavy snow or ice occurs try to get it off the roof before it becomes a safety hazard. Here are some general safety tips if you find yourself in this situation. (Remember safety first, don’t climb on your roof if you don’t have the proper safety equipment.) If you are unsure about completing this, you should contact a professional to help out. DO ● Metal tools may cause damage to your roof. Try a plastic shovel or push broom instead. ● Have someone outside with you to assist.
● Wear protective headgear and goggles when performing any of these tasks. Continued on page 9

In this new system - where the little guy gets the shaft the reluctance of Trump to release his tax returns makes perfect sense. Guys like him game the system by writing the rules to their benefit. In his case we just don’t know for exactly how much until we see his tax returns. The rest of us, well, we’re pretty much left out in the cold on a snowy night. What will change all this? Working for politicians who aren’t con men and con women, knowing what we’re talking about, and voting out folks running for office who keep telling us what’s good for us when the evidence proves it isn’t. /s/ Frank Pierson Oracle, AZ

GM made $11.8 billion in profit last year then filed for a tax refund of slightly more than $100 million. Big business walked away with big billions to buy back their stock. Their take totaled $437 billion and counting. The national debt exploded by 17% - $779 billion. We may not have to worry about that but our children and grandchildren do. Ask any lobbyist lurking in the halls of Washington, DC (or for that matter the AZ State Capitol) and they’ll tell you what their clients care about is taxes, fees, and government contracts. That’s their bread and butter. Congratulations to them. They scored big for themselves and their clients while helping to make losers out of the rest of us.

The average federal tax refund so far in 2019 is negative 17 % according to the IRS. Not a ringing endorsement of legislation passed by Congress and signed into law by the President. This “Trump Tax” was billed as a huge “populist” benefit to the middle class, a “$4000 raise” its advocates claimed. Now these cheerleaders are singing a different tune. Republican tax writing Senator Chuck Grassley offers a lecture. “Don’t forget the average $20/week many of you saved,” he intones. Feel better? I don’t. My personal tax bill for 2018 is about what it was the previous year. In the mean time, Jeff Bezos of Amazon fame will pay zero corporate income tax for 2018.

Bike Jamboree Around the World traverses the Copper Corridor
Despite the rain and snowy weather that descended upon Arizona last week, a group of five Polish cyclists took part in the Arizona leg of the Bike Jamboree Around the World. Mariusz Orlik, Jarek Ba, Anna Studnicka, Marek Zalweski and Ola Slawek are all Polish residents who are participating in the two year Jamboree coordinated by the Polish Safety and Guiding organization, which is similar to Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts in America. The Jamboree website describes the event as “an ambitious project aiming to present scouting as the unique movement involving young, extraordinary people. People who, regardless their nationality, culture, religion and outlook on life, can cooperate with each other.” This Jamboree started in 2015 and is expected to end at the World Scout Jamboree in West Virginia, USA which will begin on July 22 and end in early August. The Jamboree started in May of 2017 and has traveled through Asia, Russia, Siberia and Mongolia. By the time the Jamboree is complete, those participating will have traveled 21,750 miles and 21 countries. Each segment is cycled by a team of at least five people and a sixth person may attend from another Scouting group depending on the country they are cycling through. The group cycling from Arizona flew into Los Angeles and drove to Tucson to start their Arizona adventure which will travel from Tucson to the Grand Canyon. Encountering so much rain and snow has
delayed their adventure a bit more than expected but along the way in the Copper Corridor they have met a few helpful residents who have aided them. Once in Tucson, they camped at Catalina State Park before making their way to Winkelman where they were assisted by Rose Slotter at the Palo Verde RV Park. With the cold, wet weather becoming more of a hinderance to the trip, Rose welcomed them into her home for a dinner and overnight stay and breakfast. The cyclists started on their trip to Globe on Highway 77 over El Capitan pass. Rose did not want to see them have too much of a struggle so she drove over to Globe and picked up lunch to take to them and help them along the way. The pass proved to be challenging for a few of the riders so she loaded them and their bikes and away they went to Globe. Once in Globe she helped them find a repair shop that was able to help with a few bike repairs and to shop for groceries, with the bad weather setting in she knew it would be an additional challenge for them to be cycling to the grocery store for supplies. What no one could have expected, was the winter storm of all storms to get in the way of this trip. The cyclists were held up in Globe and eventually made it down to Superior after being delayed with road closures, snow and ice. They had planned to camp at Oak Flats but traveled into Superior to camp at the Box 8 Ranch due to the heavy snow fall and running creeks at Oak Flats. They were all impressed at
Cyclists Mariusz Orlik, Jarek Ba, Anna Studnicka, Marek Zalweski and Ola Slawek with Rose Slotter at the Palo Verde RV Park in Winkelman. Rose Slotter | Submitted how friendly and helpful everyone has been on their journey. They were curious as to why the mountain in Superior in has a big S on it, which was explained that letters on the mountains are a landmark and brand for each little mining town in the area. Their tents were set up to stay warm on the cold clear night and they would leave Superior on Sunday to travel to Apache Junction. The next leg of their trip from
Apache Junction will take them through the Apache Trail to Roosevelt Lake and then on to Payson, Sedona, Flagstaff, then finally the Grand Canyon. They will treat themselves to a visit to Las Vegas and the fly home from Los Angeles. They have six weeks to complete their leg of the Jamboree. ADOT, Weather Service collaboration improves storm response; Meteorologists assist ADOT in responding to extreme weather PHOENIX – As last week’s monster winter storm approached, leaders from the Arizona Department of Transportation and the National Weather Service watched conditions on traffic cameras along state highways and discussed how best to stage equipment and personnel while getting critical information to drivers. A collaboration between the agencies that grew out of this storm will have a National Weather Service meteorologist stationed at ADOT’s Traffic Operations Center when significant storms threaten, sharing forecasts and helping inform decisions on where snowplows and other resources are needed most. “This is a natural pairing of two agencies working together in the public’s interest,” said Brent Cain, director of ADOT’s
Transportation Systems Management & Operations Division. “This will allow us to get information quickly about approaching weather so we can prepare to clear roads and advise the public even before the storms arrive.” “We were talking about how we could work together to prepare for storms, and get the best information to drivers as quickly as possible, and the idea of collaborating just
fell into place,” said Ken Waters, warning coordination meteorologist with the NWS office in Phoenix. The collaboration also will help ADOT public information officers provide critical information about how weather may affect travel along specific routes and what drivers can do about it, including delaying travel until the worst has passed.
Through our readers’ viewfinders: Photos of the ‘monster storm’ Snow in the desert is an unusual occurrence and last week’s storm dumped enough snow to shut down the highways and give kids a ‘snow day’ to enjoy. Oracle received the most, eight inches by our measurements, although the National Weather Service tweeted that one of their off-duty employees had measured 10 inches in Oracle. ADOT crews were out in force, plowing the snow off the highway and keeping the traffic running. Much of Copper Area’s news coverage of the storm was done through Facebook. Looking at posts from residents, we found many excellent photos from the storm and thought to share them with our readers. Our photographers were out too. We hope you enjoy them as much as we do.

Pancakes and penitence: Church of the Good Shepherd hosts annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Dinner The annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper will be offered to the public on Tuesday, March 5, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Ray Hall of The Church of the Good Shepherd in Kearny. The meal is all-you-can-eat pancakes with link sausages and unlimited beverages. The meal is $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 years of age and under, and children 2 and under are free. The people of Good Shepherd Church offer this meal every year on Shrove Tuesday, which falls the day before Ash Wednesday in the Christian calendar. Since Ash Wednesday is a solemn day marking the beginning of the penitential season of Lent, from medieval times Christians would use Shrove Tuesday to confess their sins and get ready for Lent by using up the meats and fats in the household before their fasting began. The poor people didn’t have a lot of meats to give up, but they used the fatty foods they had to prepare griddle cakes, using up all the grease they possessed. The custom continues today in the form of pancakes and sausage. The dinner is a benefit. All the funds will be used for community projects and summer camp scholarships for
children in the area. This year the NOMADS, a visiting service group of the United Methodist Church, will be helping to serve the meal. People of the Copper Basin are invited to the meal and urged to stay at the tables and visit with each other. The next day, Ash Wednesday, Pastor Michael Eaton will
lead the service which consists of scripture and sermon, the penitential prayers, the imposition of Lenten ashes, and the service of Holy Communion. All people of the Copper Basin are invited to take part. Tickets for the supper are available from members or may be purchased at the door.

Shop local. Buy local. The Ray High School Men’s Varsity Basketball Team heads out to play in the state championships. Due to the weather, the games were on again, off again. Eventually the boys played, winning a spot in the final game where they lost to the Gregory School. The story will be posted on copperarea.com later this week.
ICE AND SNOW Continued from page 3
● Start from the edge and work your way up the roof, only as far as you’re able to do so safely. ● Try to shave the snow down to 2 or 3 inches on the roof instead of scraping the roof clean, which will risk damage to your shingles or other roof covering. ● Keep all ladders, shovels, and roof rakes away from utility wires. ● Keep gutters and drains clean and free of ice, snow, and other debris, and keep downspouts clean at ground level. ● Carefully remove large icicles if they’re hanging over doorways and walkways. ● Clear snow away from furnace and dryer exhaust vents to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Make sure you have working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms on every level of your home. ● Clear snow from fire hydrants near your home or business. DON’T ● Don’t stand on or place heavy equipment on the roof unless approved by a registered professional engineer. ● Don’t use a ladder, since ice tends to build up on both the rungs of the ladder and the soles of your boots. If using a ladder, be extra cautious during cold and icy weather. ● Don’t use blow torches, open flames, or electric heating devices like hair dryers
or heat guns to remove snow and ice. Warning Signs of Structural Roof Problems ● Sagging roofs ● Severe leaks ● Cracked or split wood members ● Bends or ripples in supports ● Cracks in walls or masonry ● Sheared-off screws from steel frames ● Sprinkler heads that have dropped down below ceiling tiles ● Doors that pop open ● Doors or windows that are difficult to open ● Bowed utility pipes or conduit attached at ceiling ● Creaking, cracking, or popping sounds What to Do if You Have Structural Damage ● If you notice any signs of roof damage, or suspect a gas leak from falling ice or snow, leave the building immediately without touching light switches and call 9-1-1 from an outside location. Enjoy the snow, before you know it, summer will be here. Many of these ideas can be found on the following websites: https://www.osha.gov/Publications/ OSHA-3513roof-snow-hazard.pdf https://www.mass.gov/service-details/ roof-collapse-and-snow-removal-safetyinformation

NOMADS helping out at Good Shepherd Church
Russ Mathias and John Zweifler use craftsmen’s skills in shaping a new chancel step and rail for Good Shepherd United Methodist Church in Kearny. They are two of six NOMADS who are living for three weeks in the Copper Basin offering their skills and labor for the good of others. The NOMADS are church people who live in mobile homes, traveling from place to place as craftsmen missionaries. NOMADS have been coming to Good Shepherd Church for many years, parking their trailers in the area in back of the church building, and working with the local congregation to do things for the church and for the surrounding area. They are now about halfway through their three-week stay here before moving on to other places. Sam Hosler | CBN
