OBITUARIES Vikki Kaufhold The Dripping Springs and Tortilla Mountain ranges still surround our horizon with scenic beauty. Old Man Sol shines brightly and the Arizona skies above are crystal clear blue. But our skies are crying. Vikki Kaufhold went to heaven the evening of Jan. 31, 2018. We miss her very much. Everyone who knew “our loverly Miss Vikki” remembers her laughter and her signature feisty attitude. She loves the hummingbirds on our back patio, and viewing magnificent sunsets in the evenings. Her favorite daypart is dusk because the colors become subtle and the shadows are more nuanced. The back-lit silhouette of the mountains adds visual drama. Vikki was Executive Director of the Copper Basin Chamber of Commerce for several years. For over a decade she was an officer of the Copper Basin Sportsmen’s Club. She enjoyed running events for the Chamber and working with the youngsters on Range Day for the Hunting and Gun Safety Classes.

Thank you to all those in the area who stopped by, extended cards, condolences, flowers and food. The Kearny Health Mart and Norm’s Hometown Grocery were our go-to places to keep Vikki’s regimen going smoothly. We would have been lost without these two local businesses. We appreciate the effort you put in every day just to be open for us, and Myra’s marvelous flowers brighten our lives every day. An effervescent free spirit, Vikki surrounds us. Each room in our home is decorated in a style Vikki dubbed “Eclectic Hippie Garage Sale” and we made many fun visits to and from The Hand Me Up Shop. Nearly every day we adjourned to our back patio and had a “Z-O-E” afternoon. Z-O-E stands for the Zenith of Evolution and mainly just means that life is as good as it’s going to get: problems and work get set aside, we have our loved ones near, and we invest our time enjoying each other. I hope everyone reading this gets to have some ZOE moments this spring. Here are two silly small-town stories: I walk around town a lot and make note of what I see. I coined the term “the cowboy cellphone” to describe when two pick-up trucks meet, one going up Tilbury Hill, the other going down. Both drivers stop. They roll down their windows and chat at length oblivious to the blocked traffic. But there are no horns blaring like you’d have in the big city. People around here are okay with taking things a little more slowly and I relish that about our area. Recently, I’ve been the recipient of many “cowboy cell phone” traffic stoppages as drivers pull up next to me during my walk, put on their parking brake, get out, and come around just to give me a hug. Thank you for that. The very first night we arrived in Kearny 20 years ago the landline phone was on. We dialed up Old Time Pizza and ordered a Doctor Pizza Special for delivery, and Mary Birkett brought it down. We were so delighted that we
Vikki peering out at the Tortilla Mountains from her back patio on the hillside in Kearny. She would NEVER have wanted her face in the paper, her husband Gerry said. could get Pizza delivery in Kearny! The night after Vikki went to heaven, friends came by and we ordered a Doctor Pizza Special and had it delivered. Vikki arrived in and left from the Copper Corridor with Old Time Pizza. Thank you for that. Vikki donated her remains to the University of Arizona Medical Center where she’s helping doctors with cancer research. We have no plans for a formal service at this time. Thank you to everyone who has been so generous and caring during this difficult transition for us. Donations can be made to Kearny Fireman’s Fund, P. O. Local schools take safety precautions in the event of active shooters By Mila Besich-Lira Copper Area News
In the wake of the Florida school shooting, news reports and just about every television station has shown coverage of students who are demanding stricter gun control to prevent future school shootings. Reminders of the often harsh world we are living in bombard social media threads and sometimes, there is a calm that something like that would not happen in these small towns. While these situations seem to be thousands of miles away from the Copper Corridor, that has not meant that local school districts have not had to deal with threats of gun violence. Many of the districts are ensuring that emergency plans are revisited and everyone has a clear understanding what to do should something like a school shooting happen on campus. Thursday morning parents, students and administration of the Superior Unified School District viewed social media posts proclaiming that “SHS will be Shot Up Today” from a fake profile by a person named Ray Andres.
School Administration and Superior Police did not take this lightly, even though it turns out that the social media posts were running rampant throughout the United States. The Superior School District in Superior, Wisconsin alerted the Superior Unified School District on Thursday that their school also took special precautions and upon investigating the online threat their local police determined that the internet threat started from a computer in Flagstaff, Arizona. Superior (AZ) police department is conducting an investigation as well and has subpoenaed the social media posts and profile. This particular threat affected many schools throughout the nation with the initials SHS and will more than likely become a nationwide investigation. Superior Police Department posted officers at both schools as a precaution and parents were notified via Facebook and the Schools Way App that the police would be on campus throughout the day. The school and Superior Police plan to continue having officers on campus for the next few weeks and every morning.
“We are very pleased with the communication and follow through during this situation,” said Superintendent Steve Estatico. Throughout the day the school was able to provide parents information using social media. The district did not count the absences of students who stayed home that day as many parents decided to keep their children home as a precaution. Superior Police, Fire and the School District are working on conducting evacuation and intruder drills to ensure that students know what to do should such a situation arise. Parents at Ray Unified School district received a letter from the school district explaining that the school had received a rumors of a credible threat of school violence from a student. In the letter from Superintendent Curt Cook explained that there is an ongoing investigation by Kearny Police Department into the matter and that the school will be using one main point of entry going forward. At press time no further information could be given as to the status of the investigation.

The mission of CASA of Gila County is to empower each CASA volunteer to advocate for the best interest of abused and neglected children of Gila County who are involved in the juvenile dependency courts. The program promotes and supports community-based volunteers, certified by the Arizona Supreme Court, who provide quality advocacy to help ensure each child victim is in a safe, permanent, nurturing home. over 18,000 foster children. While most children are busy making family memories, foster children attend court hearings, adjust to new foster homes and transitioning to new schools. That’s a heavy burden for a child to carry. Our CASA heroes are dedicated to help make the child’s dream of a safe and loving family a reality! Cake and refreshments will be offered to the public March 16, 2018 at High Desert Middle School in Globe between noon and 1 pm during a special training event co-sponsored by CASA of Gila County. So, What is a CASA? As a CASA volunteer one will get free, comprehensive training that will empower them to help a foster child with their court case. Volunteers get to know the child they represent by talking with everyone in that child’s life: parents and relatives, foster parents, teachers, medical professionals, attorneys, social workers, and have access to all the case information. The volunteer role is to
combine the case history with personal observations to make recommendations for the future of the case. It typically takes 2-5 hours per week to help a child as a CASA volunteer. To become one of these CASA Super Heroes or to learn more, contact Coordinators, Patti Dremler in Payson 928-474-7145 or Emily Leverance in Globe 928-402-4427. Copper Basin Chamber hosts annual Women’s Expo
On Saturday, Feb. 24, the Copper Basin Chamber of Commerce brought an escape from the everyday for the women of the Copper Basin area. At the Eighth Annual Copper Basin Women’s Expo, girlfriends, sisters, daughters, co-workers and mothers
indulged in a variety of booths filled with great shopping finds and entrepreneurial opportunities. They also learned of the different advocates available in our area like CASA who recruits, trains and supports volunteers that represent the interests of abused and or neglected children in court.
While they walked around exploring the different booths, drawings were given away and amazing food was being sold in the concessions by Commadres Cocina. A fun time was had by all. Sponsors of this annual event were RECON Construction, ASARCO Hayden
Smelter, Norms Hometown Grocery, Old Time Pizza, West End Café, Optima Advantage and Norwex. The Copper Basin Chamber of Commerce would like to invite you to next year’s expo Feb. 23, 2019. Visit us for all our events at www.copperbasinaz.org

was a boy living in Seligman, Arizona, and my folks told me that uncle had moved his family to help build Kearny, a remarkable new town in Arizona. We drove down to visit a couple of times, and we followed the town’s growth in the Arizona Republic. We learned about the history of Ray and Sonora. Seligman itself was a racial mix of Hualapai Indians, whites, and people of Mexican descent, My parents held up Kearny as a profile of what Arizona could be like in the future. Kearny is my home now. Simply put, I like it here. It’s not just Kearny, but also all the surrounding towns and areas that share so much history and have their own story to tell. Our celebration of Pioneer Days begins in two weeks. This is the time to share our stories, who we are, what we want to be, with the rest of Arizona. The Copper Basin Chamber of Commerce has redoubled its efforts to make Pioneer
Days special not just for us who live here, but for all who will come here. There are many more events for all of us to enjoy. Good news! The people who make the Pioneer Days tee shirts have given us more time to order them. Place your order at the chamber office from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Please hurry, for this Friday, March 2, the final order will be placed at 3 p.m. Let’s all show our pride with a new shirt. I don’t know how many people think “medical care” when they patronize the Hand Me Up Shop. People come for the recycled merchandise, for the low prices, and to visit the people who volunteer their time at the shop. The Hand Me Up Shop has been a stalwart supporter of medical care in this area, providing medical equipment and medical scholarships for nurses, doctors, and EMTs. The official name of the group is The Community Health Care Volunteers.
They have worked closely with the Copper Basin Community Health Care Foundation which owns the old hospital building now used by the medical clinic and other health care groups. In fact, the thrift shop provided the financial resources necessary a few years ago to keep health care in this area. Why am I telling you this? You might know this already. Well, my purpose is to tell you that the thrift shop is seeking more Community Health Care Volunteers to help in the shop and to share in the organization’s decision making in support of improved medical care. The work is not onerous. The volunteers enjoy each others’ friendship even as they are busy sorting and pricing items, putting them up for sale, and taking care of the business end of things. This is the way we do things right in small town Arizona. Go to the shop to learn more and to offer your time and service.
ALONG THE GILA By Sam Hosler Special to Copper Area News
My hat is off to the Copper Basin Health Care Volunteers and to everyone working to make Pioneer Days a great success.

Lady Cats’ season ends with loss to St. Michael in semis By Andrew Luberda Copper Basin News
The No. 3-seeded Ray girls’ basketball team was halfway to an appearance in the 1A State Championship game, but No. 2 St. Michael erased a three-point halftime deficit on its way to a come-from-behind
56 – 49 victory last Friday at the Prescott Event Center. The Lady Cats held an 18 – 16 lead at the end of a high-scoring first quarter and increased their lead at halftime to 27 – 24. Following a pair of wins to reach the semifinals, Ray senior Savannah Rodriguez said defense wins championships, and she
turned out to be prophetic. Unfortunately, it was St. Michael’s defense that proved to be the catalyst for the eventual state champion Cardinals. St. Michael outscored Ray 32 – 22 during the second half of the semifinal game to earn a spot opposite of No. 4 Baboquivari in the title game.
Rodriguez (18 points) and sophomore Shelby Yocum (14 points) combined for 32 of the Lady Cats’ 49 points, nearly 65 percent of Ray’s scoring output in the loss. Yocum and junior Tara Lorona tied for a team-high eight rebounds. Yocum also had six assists and a pair of steals in the game.
