Income Under $55,000? Gila County offers free tax prep program

January 31 was the deadline for employers to send W2 forms - have you started preparing your tax paperwork? If you earn less than $55,000, and if tax forms usually send you to a commercial tax preparer – call Gila County Community Services to schedule an appointment for free tax preparation. Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) will meet, consult and help fill-out tax forms for Hayden-Winkelman clients at the Hayden Senior Center during the first week of February. While the service is free, appointments are required. Call Gila County Community Action Program Administrator Dorine Prine at (928) 474-7192 Community Action Program Administrator Dorine Prine and Payson coworker Elsa Bobier helped Gila County VITA staff prepared and filed 655 returns last year, securing $837,439 in federal and state refund dollars for Gila County residents who qualify for the free service. Prine and her team hope to expand, add clients – and save them even more money during the 2019 tax season. To schedule an appointment with one of these IRS-certified VITA tax preparers, call 928-474-7192. VITA volunteers estimate tax preparation fees average about $300; some businesses deduct that from clients’ expected refund. Taxes prep through VITA is free; eliminating fees and saving clients money they used for car payment or repair, house or utility bills, or simply to bank for future bills. “If somebody gave you $300, what would you do?” asks Prine. “Buy propane? Pay your heating bill?” Last year

alone, VITA saved Gila County residents over $196,000 dollars in tax preparation fees. “If you don’t understand something about your income or withholding, we’re there to explain it in your language, not IRS language,” says Prine. “We’re available all year-round to advise and assist taxpayers.” Prine says the typical appointment lasts about an hour, with benefits lasting all year. “Taxes are difficult for people, and we try to make the paperwork easy and fun,” she says. With 25 years of tax preparation – and a decade running the VITA program -- Prine has keen insight into tax deductions clients would unknowingly miss. For more than a decade Gila County’s VITA team has prepared tax papers and filing for residents whose household income is $55,000 or less a year. VITA started when Gila County Community Services Director Malissa Buzan realized low income residents need assistance completing and filing tax paperwork. The popular program keeps tax refund dollars within Gila County – and in the wallets of taxpayers. “If someone wants a bigger refund, I can offer advice to position them for the next year to get it,” says Prine. For example, she might suggest that a single parent who is eligible for the EITC and the CTC might reduce their withholding. Although it may reduce the person’s refund slightly, it could give them more money during the year when they need it. “We strive to give clients as much individualized attention as they need,” said Prine, “and to coach our clients away from high-interest, rapid-refund

loans that may seem tempting – but come with hidden fees. We can give people the full amount of their refund in about ten days – and that’s a lot more money in your pocket.” Dorine Prine and other IRS-certified volunteers have already begun preparing returns at Gila County CAP Offices in both Payson and Globe. There’s also a HaydenWinkelman VITA site at the Hayden Senior Center, likely to be open for appointments during the first week of February. Prine points out that this year the IRS will not issue refunds for anyone getting Earned Income Tax Credits (EITC) or Child Tax Credits (CTC) until Feb. 15 due to the PATH Act, a federal law designed to reduce fraud. However, Prine says that residents expecting to receive EITC or CTC should still file as early as possible. She explains that this savings is particularly important for people receiving the EITC and CTC. “These tax credits are really so important because they help lift people out of poverty,” says Prine. “It’s essential that we get people every penny that they have coming to them, so they can put it toward emergency savings, childcare, or transportation to get to and from a job.” Gila County Community Services staff and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) volunteers will meet, consult and help fill-out tax forms for Hayden-Winkelman clients at the Hayden Senior Center during the first week of February. Hayden wrestlers Rodriguez, Kame qualify for State Championships By Andrew Luberda Copper Basin News Hayden senior Joel Rodriguez (220) and junior Peter Kame (195) qualified for the Division IV State Championships after

finishing first and second, respectively, at last weekend’s Section III tournament at Mogollon High School. Three other Lobos – Omar Lopez (132), Josiel Rodriguez (170) and Pablo Acuna (180) – were all a victory away at

sectionals from qualifying as well. Rodriguez (33-4), the Section III champion, will face Mayer’s Marcos Leal (22-6), who placed fourth at Section I tournament, in his opening match. Kame (37-14) will take on Monument

Valley’s Tyler Etsitty (15-7), who placed third at the Section IV tournament, in his first match. The Division IV State Tournament is Feb. 7-8 at the Findlay Toyota Center in Prescott Valley.

Championship after defeating regularseason region champ and fifth-ranked Ft. Thomas on the Apaches’ home court last Thursday night, 50 – 44. The top two teams in the region

standings split two previous meetings this season before Ray won the rubber match and one of the region’s two automatic berths in the 1A State Championship. Ft. Thomas earned the other as the result of its regular-season championship. Likely Player of the Year Shelby Yocum led Ray with another double-double – 18 points and 12 rebounds – in addition to five steals, two blocks, and an assist. Senior Tara Lorona added nine points,

seven rebounds, two steals, and an assist. Sophomore Chasity Kelley finished with eight points, four steals, three rebounds, and an assist. Emily Rutter, a junior, also contributed with four points and five rebounds. The state tournament seedings will be announced this Saturday on the AIA Bracket Show, which can be viewed online at www.azpreps365.com. The tournament begins on Friday, Feb. 15, at Prescott-area sites.

Lady Cats defeat Ft. Thomas, claim region tournament title By Andrew Luberda Copper Basin News

Arete Prep upsets No. 4 Ray in region tournament By Andrew Luberda Copper Basin News The Ray boys’ basketball team was victimized by an oft-proven theory in the first-round of the 1A East Region Tournament: It’s always tough to beat the same team twice in a season, and even harder in consecutive games. The sixth-ranked Chargers pulled off the upset by the smallest of margins, defeating the Bearcats at tournament host Ft. Thomas High School last Tuesday, 47 – 46, to advance to the championship game. The Bearcats won the regular-season finale between the teams in decisive fashion just four days earlier, 50 – 32. Senior Stone Patterson led the Ray with a double-double that included 18

points on 7-of-14 shooting to go along with 18 rebounds. Senior Jaden Pace and Alex Bravo, a sophomore, finished with nine and seven points, respectively. Pace, who also had a team-high four assists, and Guillermo Ortega pulled down six rebounds apiece Despite the loss, the Cats are certain to be an at-large qualifier for the 1A State Championship. The state tournament seedings will be announced this Saturday on the AIA Bracket Show, which can be viewed online at www. azpreps365.com. The Chargers, meanwhile, defeated Ft. Thomas in the championship game last Thursday night to earn an automatic berth in the state tournament, which begins on Friday, Feb. 15, at Prescottarea sites.
