As the weather gets warmer and youth basketball ends, children throughout the Tri-Community start gearing up for baseball and softball. Unfortunately, this season it seems to be a bit confusing. I want to take just a moment to clear things up. Late last year, the presidents of the local leagues got together to decide on combining into one league. Mammoth baseball made the independent decision to stay separate in order to make things easier for both parents and children. What this basically means for parents is that if you or your child reside within the Mammoth League’s boundaries, you can play baseball with the Mammoth league and you do not need to register with another league in order to play baseball. A letter was recently sent home with children within the district that seems to be causing some confusion. The Mammoth league did not change. Nothing about the league or its boundaries changed. For the residents of Mammoth everything stayed the same. If you register with Mammoth,

all your children’s practices and home games will be in Mammoth. One important note, if a Mammoth resident registers with another league their child’s practices will not be held at the baseball fields in Mammoth rather they will be held at the location the league they registered with designates. The Mammoth League will be hosting in person registrations throughout February and the beginning of March. Our next in-person registration date will be on Feb. 18 at La Casita in Mammoth from 5:30-7 p.m. For more information on registration dates, times, locations, or anything baseball related you can contact us at MammothLittleLeague@gmail.com or by phone at 520-3095942, 520-909-7007, or 520-686-4353. You can also check out our Facebook page Mammoth Little League for all thing’s baseball and upcoming events our league will be hosting. Let’s play ball!! /s/ Annie Martinez Mammoth Little League

San Manuel FFA visits Oracle’s Mountain Vista

That time is upon parents and students, the time where decisions must be made about where Mountain Vista’s eighth graders will attend high school. They have a choice. San Manuel High School would like them to come to San Manuel. Last week, the high school took their brightest and best students (and a fair number of cute animals) to visit the elementary school in Oracle. New this year is Future Farmers of America, or FFA. The students in that class took their petting zoo to the school and students from all the grades were able to interact with the students and their animals. One of the best reasons to attend San Manuel High School are the high number of Career and Technical Education programs now being taught on campus. FFA is just one of these programs. These CTE classes allow students to leave high school with a ready-made career. Another great reason to attend San Manuel High School are the different athletic programs. The smaller size of the school allows more athletes to have field and court time. John Hernandez | Miner

Postseason bound: San Manuel MBB in playoffs By Andrew Luberda San Manuel Miner The San Manuel boys’ basketball team will make its first state playoff appearance in a decade after winning six of its last seven games of the season. Its 12 wins this season

are the most by a Miners’ team in the MaxPreps era, dating back to 2004. The 15th-ranked Miners will finish somewhere between 12th and 15th in the final rankings, which would secure a home playoff game on Wednesday, Feb. 13. A win in that game would earn a berth in the 2A State Championship

Tournament, which begins next weekend in Prescott. “I think our team has really bought into the philosophy of chopping wood,” San Manuel head coach Damon Lovato said about his team’s strong finish at season’s end. “It’s been a relentless pursuit of pressing, just trying to wear out our opponent. “Sometimes when you’re chopping wood the tree falls down sooner and sometimes it doesn’t.” The Miners nearly overcame a 15-point deficit entering the fourth quarter against No. 2 Globe last Tuesday night, outscoring the run-and-gun and defensively-challenged Tigers 35 – 28 in the final quarter of an 84 – 77 loss. Javy Tamayo and Louis Chavez combined for more than 50 points against the Tigers, including 29 of the Miners’ last 35 points. Two nights later against Miami in the final regularseason home game, the Miners did overcome a 16-point deficit entering the fourth quarter, outscoring the Vandals Continued on page 8

35 – 14 to claim a 68 – 63 victory. Caleb Quintero scored a game-high 19 points and Javy Tamayo finished with 17 points in the win. The Miners appear to be peaking at the right time. “We’re playing as a team,” Lovato said. “There isn’t any selfishness at all with this group of guys.”

The Miners are a group that likes to win and, apparently, chop wood. Hey, whatever works. Keep chopping.

Gilbert (50-2), a state champion as a freshman at the 106-pound weight division, set his sights a year ago on winning the 120-pound title this year. Gilbert will wrestle Bourgade Catholic freshman Jesus Vera (11-9), who placed fourth at the Section I tournament, in his first match. Julian (36-12) will face Mogollon’s Seth Reidhead (26-9), who placed second at the Section III tournament, in his opening match. “We have three days to get ready with hard work and great work ethic,” San Manuel head coach Gilbert Rodriguez, Sr. told the San Manuel Miner. “They will be ready for the upcoming event that these wrestlers have looked forward to.” The Division IV State Tournament is Feb. 7-8 at the Findlay Toyota Center in Prescott Valley.

Independent insurance agency gives two local women the opportunity to help others

Kim Jimenez, Monica Adams and Merien Alexander at Invested Insurance Agency. Jennifer Carnes | Miner

For Monica Adams and Kim Jimenez, the Invested Insurance Agency is a way to help others. The agency, which has been in operation for just over a year, offers more than 30 insurance carriers which gives Monica and Kim the ability to get the best coverage for the best prices for their clients. “It’s more individualized,” Monica told the San Manuel Miner. She explained that “captive” agencies can only sell one insurance carrier. Her agency, which brokers different companies’ policies, gives them greater flexibility. The agency offers home, auto, business and life insurance. “Our main focus is to find the insurance coverage that best suits you and your family at the best

price,” their brochure states. “We partner with many insurance carriers to make sure we offer quality, affordable coverage options.” “We wanted the opportunity to help people,” Monica said, “to give back to others.” Monica owns the agency and Kim is an agent and sales associate. The two have been friends since high school. Both graduated from San Manuel High School in 2004. Monica is from Mammoth and Kim still lives in San Manuel. A third member of their team is Merien Alexander, who also serves as agent and sales associate. Monica attended the University of Arizona as an undergrad and later attended the University’s School of Pharmacy.
