Pinal County Veterans Stand Down aims to connect vets to services Florence, Arizona – The Pinal County Veteran Stand Down Committee is made up of several organizations from the area that have partnered to host the 6th Annual Stand Down, March 17, 2018. Local providers will offer services to Veterans that include; haircuts, health screenings, legal assistance, Pinal County Court issue reviews, emergency services, employment and training opportunities, child support, vision screening, as well as food stamps, and VA and Social Security benefits (and much more) – 50+ providers have registered for this year’s event. Southern Arizona Region VA staff will be on-site to assist Veterans with issues and concerns. In active service, a Stand Down is a

necessary mental and physical break from combat. Military personnel spend a few days in a safe place to rest and recuperate before returning to frontlines. With that the term has carried into Stand Downs across the United States to assist OUR Veterans with getting connected to services, opportunities and a place to meet other Veterans from the area! The Stand Down also aims to reach as many of those homeless Veterans and Veterans at-risk of becoming homeless as possible, connecting them to services that will allow them to get on the path to self-sufficiency. Registration begins at 7 a.m. to noon. Opening Ceremony begins at 8 a.m. Continued on page 17

It’s Here! Pioneer Days is THIS Weekend

he publicity has been out for a long time, the carnival people have arrived, and floats for the parade on Saturday are being prepared. Yes, this weekend is Pioneer Day in the Copper Basin! The celebration has a history of about 50 years. When Pioneer Days began, there was still a new paint smell on Kearny’s houses. Hayden and Winkelman were the senior communities. But the new residents of Kearny were also the old residents of Ray and Sonora and Barcelona, places with an established history and culture. So the new residents of Kearny celebrated their past as well as their anticipated future. As the years went on, the Chamber of Commerce developed around the common history shared by all the area towns. It became the Copper Basin Chamber of Commerce, and Pioneer Days came to reflect the history and aspirations of Hayden and Winkelman and Kearny, with Kelvin, Riverside, and Dudleyville playing an important role Copper has been the common thread. Sometimes the thread has been strong, threading the towns in a prosperous economy. Probably more often the thread has been tenuous, even questionable in its strength, but the thread has never been broken. Right now copper is getting stronger. The price is up over the last few years, but is still subject to the realities of worldwide economic factors. ASARCO is moving ahead with its projects: the land exchange, the tailings development in Ripsey Wash, and the refurbishing of the Hayden Smelter. It is clearly looking toward a future here. Mining towns were a necessary part of the development of mining. Without the towns, there was no labor force. A hundred years later, the labor force is not dependent on the small towns, for transportation has extended the range of available workers. Technology has also shrunk the total labor force necessary to do the work. Now the mining towns still need the mines, but the mines have less need of the towns. This is true not only the

ALONG THE GILA By Sam Hosler Special to Copper Area News

Copper Basin but through Arizona and the American West. It’s a tough pill to take. The towns need the mines, but the mines don’t depend on the towns. I have learned, though, that dealing with this is not a matter of being a Gloomy Gus or a hyperactive Pollyanna. Things are different than in the past, but change always results in new circumstances. I was pleased to discover that, according to the U.S. Census, Kearny’s population in the special U.S. Census estimate is now 2,075 people, significantly larger than the 2010 figure of 1,950. Hayden and Winkelman’s figures have held steady, and Mammoth has increased to 1,519 people, a gain of almost 500. I think our towns are on the cusp of finding one or more new economic directions, as well as maintaining our historic connection with mining. The Arizona Trail is a new factor, as well as the Apache Sky Casino. As Pinal County continues its strong economic trail, the rising tide in the Valley will touch our shores as we offer open spaces and venturesome activities, equally popular with young people and the newly-retired. I’m checking myself to make sure I’m not overly optimistic. But I placed my bet with this part of Arizona when I bought my house in the 1990s and my bet holds.

Community comes out to support Jovanna Calzadillas By Veronica Bracamonte Special to the Copper Basin News “There’s nothing like a small town Love.” Anything IS Possible - just take a look at the miracle of Jovanna Calzadillas. Her fundraising event this past weekend really proved that anything is possible! As she sat upon a horse with her beautiful smile, rode around the arena surrounded by friends and a very loving family, your heart couldn’t help but to be filled up with HOPE. Yes Hope! Hope for a better tomorrow, Hope for a better future and wonder and amazement of this persistent young mother #JovannaStrong ! Many supporters came out to the Benefit Team Roping and Horseshoe Tournament, hosted by Rene Arbizo and Rudy Clark. Sponsors included Rudy and Alexis Clark, John Ruiz with Ultimate Welding, Mike Mercer, Rene Arbizo, John Henry and Angie Gaona and family and Kaylee Garcia. Thank you to the hundreds of Team Ropers who traveled from afar to offer love and support to Jovanna, her husband, children and parents, Barbara and Sam. And the hosts

would like to send out a huge thank you to the Town of Winkelman for use of the facilities, Asarco for the water truck and TorrioPromotions for hosting music and more. Without everyone’s help, this event would not be possible. “There’s Nothing Like a Small Town Love” were the words that rang out before the roping started by Frank, Jovanna’s husband. In the midst of such a tragic event, it’s refreshing to see the best brought out in people when we all unite with one common goal, in this instance, to support Jovanna and her family with love and light. Jovanna will be the Grand Marshal at the Pioneer Days Parade at 10 a.m. on Saturday in Kearny, as we are honored to celebrate her in her journey! Jovanna was critically injured in the Las Vegas mass shooting on Sunday, Oct. 1, 2017. She and her husband were attending the Route 91 Country Music concert where she was caught in the gunfire. Advertise your love of Kearny – T-shirt donations sought Freshly laundered old Pioneer Days t-shirts are being sought as donations. If you have one you care to part with, for a worthy cause, then donate it in the big box at Old Time Pizza, 370 Alden Rd. “Our idea is to collect enough goodquality shirts that we can give one t-shirt to each of our hikers that come in from The Arizona National Scenic Trail,” said one of the organizers. Kearny has a history of providing respite for weary long-distance hikers coming in from the trail. A quick internet search will garner you a colorful story or two, if you aren’t in Kearny to hear them for yourself. Still, even a place as well known and looked forward to by hikers could use a little extra advertising. “Imagine the advertising value of a

hiker heading north past Roosevelt Lake or up to the Grand Canyon, wearing a brightly colored t-shirt that proclaims the Town of Kearny on the front and gives a list of our local businesses on the back.” another organizer said. Perhaps, even when they return home, the hikers will continue to wear their Kearny t-shirts, sparking curiosity and conversation among those who have not yet visited. T-shirts will be checked for quality, sorted by size and folded so as to be presented neatly. For more information on Kearny’s bid to be known as the Friendliest Town on The Arizona Trail, visit the Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ FriendliestTownOnTheAZT/.

Natural Gas Safety Wherever you live, work, or play. natural gas lines can be buried anywhere, even in areas where homes don’t use natural gas. So it’s important that EVERYONE knows how to recognize and respond to a natural gas leak, wherever they are.

A leak may be present if you: SMELL:

HEAR:

SEE:

a distinct sulfur-like odor, similar to rotten eggs, even if it’s faint or momentary.

a hissing or roaring coming from the ground, above-ground pipeline, or natural gas appliance.

dirt or water blowing into the air, unexplained dead or dying grass or plants, or standing water continuously bubbling.

IF YOU SUSPECT A LEAK • Exit the area or building immediately. Tell others to evacuate and leave doors open.
