It was nominated by Cassidy, Gladys’ eleven-year-old granddaughter, through the cooperation of the elementary school with the Journey for a Clean Kearny group. Cassidy likes her grandmother’s yard because it is neat and well-cared for, and because she especially appreciates the summer months when the flowers are tall and prolific.

EMS, RAD and Kearny’s 10-Year Plan

M

any things happened along the Gila, but I missed them because I was residing in the intensive care unit at Oro Valley Hospital in Tucson. I felt pains in my chest on Tuesday night and called 911. Our fine Kearny EMS (and officer Ken Boldin) were at my door in a minute, and soon decided that I was the winner of a helicopter ride. Once I was in and we took off, it took only 18 minutes. The emergency doctors were skilled and courteous, and got me wired up for the ICU. Well, I didn’t have a heart attack, but I do have pericarditis which mimics the symptoms of a heart attack. I am home now, weak but alert, and seeing the pain diminish a little every day. Well, while I was away, Horizon Health opened its doors in the old bank building which they have been rehabbing for some time now; RAD sanitation services delivered the new recycling bins and an explanatory letter about the garbage service, and the Kearny Town Council voted not to have a shared police chief with Hayden, Winkelman, and Mammoth. On top of that, there’s a new café in Mammoth that I need to check out, and I missed my opportunity to emcee the Country and Gospel concert at Good Shepherd Church in Kearny. I also missed saying “goodbye” to the missionary NOMADS who provided three weeks of service to Kearny, including work at the Hand Me Up Shop. The one thing I managed to accomplish was to find a way

for Kearny citizens to read and review the proposed 10year planning document. Right now it is not on the town’s website, but this is the direct link to it: bit.ly/KearnyPlan. Please take time to read and critique this important document. Next week I promise to think more about things before I write about them. Thanks for reading, and feel free to contact me with ideas for Along the Gila.

Resolution Copper is in the midst of the permitting phase.

U.S. Forest Service seeks public input on criteria for Resolution Copper mining debris tailings site Concerns on how site would affect local life and the environment sought at two workshops By James J. Hodl Copper Area News Officials with the U.S. Forest Service and Tonto National Forest will conduct two public workshops this month to collect information on what the public deems important with regard to mine tailings as the Forest Service analyzes alternate locations for Resolution Copper’s proposed tailings facility. Resolution Copper’s General Plan of Operations (GPO) for a large-scale copper mine near Superior proposes that tailings (the waste material left over after processing) be pumped as a slurry to a tailings disposal facility located on national forest land between the towns of Queen Valley and Superior. The tailings facility would grow in phases, and eventually occupy about 4,400 acres (including associated structures) of national forest land. The first workshop is scheduled to take place March 21 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Superior High School located at 100 Panther Dr. (formerly 100 Mary Drive) in Superior. The second session is set for March 22 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Gilbert Southeast Regional Library located at 775 N. Greenfield Road in Gilbert. “The workshops are not intended as a ‘vote’ for any specific alternate tailings location,” according to U.S. Forest Service Project Manager Mary Rasmussen. “Instead, using

given workshop criteria, the sessions will allow attendees to provide feedback on what they feel are the most important variables to consider for a tailings location. “This feedback will give the U.S. Forest Service a means for evaluating alternate tailings locations using stakeholder derived interests and values,” Rasmussen explained. The workshops are part of an ongoing effort to develop and Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for approval of Resolution Copper’s GPO concerning proposed large-scale mining operations in the Oak Flats area. It is separate from a parallel EIS being developed concerning public use of the Apache Leap area west of Oak Flats that Resolution Copper traded with the U.S. Forest Service to secure copper mining rights at Oak Flats. Of special concern is how the modern copper mining technology Resolution Copper will use to remove copper deposits deep underground through vertical shafts by employing a technique called block caving. The method requires less blasting and drilling when compared to traditional mining. Copper concentrate extracted by this process will under the Resolution GPO be pumped 22 miles southwest along the existing Magma Railroad corridor for additional processing. Tailings left after processing will be disposed Continued on page 20

Natural Gas Safety Wherever you live, work, or play. natural gas lines can be buried anywhere, even in areas where homes don’t use natural gas. So it’s important that EVERYONE knows how to recognize and respond to a natural gas leak, wherever they are.

A leak may be present if you: SMELL:

HEAR:

SEE:

a distinct sulfur-like odor, similar to rotten eggs, even if it’s faint or momentary.

a hissing or roaring coming from the ground or above-ground piping.

dirt or water blowing into the air, unexplained dead or dying grass or plants, or standing water continuously bubbling.

Frankie Valencia and Aliyana Perez with their first place Electromagnet Project.

IF YOU SUSPECT A LEAK • Exit the area or building immediately. Tell others to evacuate and leave doors open. • From a safe place, call 911 and Southwest Gas at 877-860-6020, day or night, whether you’re a customer or not. A Southwest Gas representative will be there as soon as possible. • Don’t smoke or use matches or lighters. • Don’t turn on or off electrical switches, thermostats, or appliance controls; or do anything that could cause a spark. • Don’t start or stop an engine, or use automated (garage) doors. the Hayden Municipal golf course. Thanks to many tee box sponsors and generous donations from corporate sponsors, the Foundation were close to reaching their goal of raising $10,000. This year’s winning team was Bob Lorona, Sam Lorona, Frank Maes and Ramon Maes with a score of 56.

The San Manuel softball team defeated the 2016 Division V State Champions last Friday, 5 – 3. It was Lady Cats’ first loss of the season after starting with three-straight victories. San Manuel scored at least one run in four different innings and held a 4 – 0 lead until Ray scored three

runs in the fifth. Tara Lorona, a sophomore, went 2-for-4 with two RBI in defeat. Ema Alverado, a senior, hit a triple in the game. Junior Janae Ruiz had two hits in the loss. Daniella Hinojos took the loss despite pitching well enough to win. The sophomore starter pitched six innings and allowed five runs but only two were earned. Starting pitcher Richard Valenzuela went four innings, allowing two runs, both unearned, on three hits with nine strikeouts and a walk. CASA GRANDE – The United Way of Pinal County is encouraging golfers to “get in the swing” at their upcoming annual golf tournament that is held at Robson Ranch located at 6844 S. Robson Ranch (just off Hwy. 287, east of Sunland Gin Road) in Eloy. Registration starts at 7:00 a.m., with an 8:00 a.m. shotgun start. The 18 hole course is set up in a four-man scramble format with an early registration cost of $375, if registered by March 17, 2017. You can expect lots of on-course contests, great raffle prizes, silent auction and a satisfying lunch. “The United Way of Pinal County Board of Directors has chosen Third Grade Reading attainment as an area of focus. In Pinal County about 30% of 3rd graders don’t meet the current reading standards. It is interesting to note that 30% of high schoolers don’t graduate. Is there a relationship? The Board of Directors feels there is” said Executive Director Manuela Bowler. We spend the first few years of our life learning to read so that we can spend the rest of our life reading to learn. For this reason the golf tournament proceeds will be allocated toward interventions that help address this needs gap. Sponsorships are still available. For more information on registration or sponsorships you may visit the website at www.unitedwayofpc.org or call the office at (520) 8360736.

CVRMC recognizes Byron Belew for years of service For nearly 10 years, the scale of commitment Mr. Byron Belew has given to Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center Board of Directors has been exemplary. His steadfast resolve and disciplined tenacity are characteristics which facilitated the advancements and growth of CVRMC both in patient care services, and the building of two clinics and the new hospital. As Chairman of the Board from 2013-2015, Mr. Belew spent many hours of hard work with the rest of his committed board members and Neal Jensen, CVRMC CEO, in planning and finance meetings to ensure the new hospital would be effective, beneficial, and comfortable for the patients of the service region. “I am proud to have served on the Board. People should know that the CVRMC Mission Statement, ‘Our Mission is Your Health,’ truly guides the actions of the Board and hospital. All those involved in operating the hospital

have a genuine concern for the care of the community,” Mr. Belew responded when asked of his personal feelings while serving on the hospital board. “Although we are not big enough to have every possible healthcare service, we try to recruit those services most in demand in our community. We thus provide high-quality care, close to home, for the benefit of patients and their family members.” As a 28-year veteran employee of Freeport-McMoRan, Mr. Belew has been the Miami Smelter Manager for the past 10 years. His community involvement in healthcare demonstrates the willingness to make a difference, and a difference he has made. “Even if you don’t know what to do, get involved! When asked to serve on the Board I knew nothing about the intricacies of healthcare; I felt completely inadequate,” stated Mr. Belew of his contribution to his community. “However, I found that I didn’t have to know everything; there were many knowledgeable individuals that could

educate me. The main thing I needed to do was invest the time and effort to learn.” “Byron has been a true strategic leader and visionary for Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center these past 10 years,” stated Neal Jensen. “His dedication and commitment has helped bring about growth and many positive changes. I am truly grateful for his unwavering perseverance and all he has given in service to CVRMC.” Mr. Byron Belew closed the conversation and his years of service by stating, “The people are what I will remember the most. Nearly everyone wants to come to work and feel valued. A principle function of the Board is to establish and oversee a system that enables people to do so. I am walking away from the Board knowing that the hospital has such a system in place. Is everything perfect – No. However, it is a good place to work, where our friends and neighbors who work at the hospital can make a real impact in the lives of their friends and neighbors who go there for care.”

Book Review: My Pearl Harbor Scrapbook 1941

Info for SpaceMaster:

By John Hernandez

Name of Legal: MK Ground Copper Area News Game LLC Size: 1 col. by 1.75 inches There have been many books written about the CBN 3x run: 3/15/17, 3/22/17, 3/29/17 attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, so you Total cost: $41.20 might ask yourself, why another one? The book My Pearl Harbor Scrapbook 1941: A Nostalgic Collection of Memories is different from earlier books in that it tells the story of Pearl Harbor with pictures, newspaper clippings, post cards, telegrams, maps and memorabilia of the times. It is put together in the format of a scrapbook and brings the war time experience to life. The memorabilia includes medals, pins, war ration books, buttons and posters. Creator and co-author of this award-winning book, along with Ernest Arroyo, Bess Taubman has put together a book that can be enjoyed by everyone. It is entertaining as well as educational. It covers Pearl Harbor from the prelude to the attack to the

end of the war and the creation and establishment of the USS Arizona Memorial. The pictures of both the patriotic and propaganda posters are amazing. There are nice anecdotes and trivia throughout the book. Readers learn that Elvis Presley put on a benefit concert in Honolulu, Hawaii for the Arizona Memorial in 1961 raising $64,000. What was surprising was that one could have bought a ticket to see Elvis for as low as $3. The book even included a page at the back where one can put their own pictures of Pearl Harbor and write down their family’s memories. Author Bess Taubman has an affinity for the men who fought and died at Pearl Harbor. She feels their story needs to be preserved and told to the younger generations so they will not forget. She travels to Pearl Harbor every Dec. 7 to attend the remembrance services at the USS Arizona Memorial at the World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument. Bess is also the author and publisher of the Pearl Harbor Visitors Guide that is available at Pearl

Harbor. My Pearl Harbor Scrapbook 1941 is one of the top sellers at the Pearl Harbor gift shop. It is also available at amazon.com. Bess was a recent visitor to Leonor Hambly K-8 School.

We will be cheering you on as you continue to represent our school at The State Science Fair of Arizona. Good luck!” And good luck from all your fans in the Copper Basin.

RESOLUTION WORKSHOPS Continued from page 4

at a tailings facility 5.5 miles northwest of Superior on 4,400 acres of Forest Service land, according to Mary Morrissett, senior metallurgical specialist with Resolution Copper. At the two workshops – which are open to all members of the public – Forest Service representatives will provide updates on the EIS process, describe the alternatives development process, and solicit input on the criteria being used to evaluate alternative tailings storage facility locations. The sessions will include a question-and-answer period. A document summarizing the scoping process for the Resolution Copper Project and Land Exchange Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) was issued on March 9 and is available online at bit.ly/2mjNsCV. The report lists concerns raised during a 2016

comment period including the views of 133,396 people who participated in the public scoping meetings and cover a variety of environmental and social criteria. Among concerns raised by the public in 2016 include if the tailings site has the potential to affect the municipal water supply of Superior and local air quality. Could the tailings have an effect on local flora, including trees such as the Arizona alder, willow, cottonwood and sycamore? Or the Arizona Hedgehog Cactus? And could the tailings bring in noxious and invasive weeds to the area? Could the tailings site likewise endanger local wildlife, including ocelots, the Lowland Leopard Frog, and the Yellow-Billed Cuckoo? The report also lists public concerns that the entire

Resolution Copper operation could increase area noise pollution, and traffic along U.S. 60 and Arizona Routes 79, 177, 88 and 24, and even the streets of Superior. A full list of issues and concerns can be found on pages 130 to 141 in the report. Persons unable to attend the workshops can participate in an online version that will be available at the project website at www.resolutionmineeis.us between March 23 and April 5. The workshops are only one step in the EIS process, so no type of decision on the tailings site will be forthcoming in the immediate future, said John Scaggs, public affairs specialist with the Tonto National Forest. “The EIS is projected for completion in late 2020, but I emphasize that is a projection,” he emphasized.

Sunny & 77 promises a good old fashioned great meal

Arizona Water Company invites you to the

Grand Opening of the

Oracle Operations Center located at

670 E. American Avenue Oracle, AZ 85623

Tuesday, March 21, 2017 10:00 a.m.

Are you in the mood for a hotdog, hamburger or even good old fashioned ice cream? Are you looking to sit down in a nice, small old-timey café and have a warm meal? Francisco Rodriguez officially opened the Sunny & 77 Grill on Saturday, Feb. 4. Rodriguez said he and his wife decided to open a restaurant after he was in a bad accident. “I was in a really bad accident, and I didn’t know if I was going to be able to go back to work,” he said. “So, we were thinking about starting some sort of fast food (place.)” Rodriguez said he thought he would just make the place into a restaurant since the place was once a Mexican-American restaurant. He said he first went through and had inspectors inspect the restaurant and he officially got the keys back in August. “We had quite of bit of renovations,” he said. Francisco and his wife Sofia, repainted the restaurant, put new doors In and new tables. Sunny & 77 Grill is focused mainly on cooking American food. “We knew there were already three Mexican-American restaurants here, so we figured we’d focus on something different,”

said Rodriguez. The restaurant menu includes: hamburgers, hotdogs, chicken wings, BLTs and ice cream. “We have your typical American food,” Sofia said. “I don’t think anyone around here sells wings.” Sofia said there used to be a Highway 77 & Grill drive-through across from the Circle-K, by the Little League field, but it’s now a ceramics shop Sofia said a lot of people come back and say they remember the drive-through. “Everybody comes back and everybody says, ‘Oh, I remember the 77’,” she said. The old-restaurant used to sell the Mammoth burger, which they have brought back, which was popular some time ago, Francisco and Sofia said. “We call it, ‘A throwback in time’,” Sofia said. The Mammoth burger includes: two patties, Swiss cheese, cheddar cheese and Canadian bacon with vegetables. Francisco said he think the restaurant will be there for a long time. “I think we’re in it for the long run,” he said. Sunny & 77 Grill is open 11-8, TuesdaySunday. Breakfast is served all-day from Thursday through Sunday.

Snacks, soft drinks, and coffee served.
