OBITUARIES Fred A. Crespin Fred A. Crespin, 94, passed at his home in Apache Junction on March 3, 2019 after a short illness. Fred is survived by his wife of 71 years, Lupe; son, Fred R. Crespin; daughters, Gloria, Lillian, Cindy and Lena. He was born in Littlefield, Texas, but raised and attended school In Scottsbluff, NE. As a 1st Sergeant Army WWII
Veteran, he was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star, among other medals. Fred lived in Superior for 36 years, working at Magma Copper Mine for 30 years. He and his wife, Lupe, also owned and operated the El Metate Tortilla Factory in Superior. Fred liked to fish and cook.
After retirement, Fred and Lupe moved to Apache Junction, where they resided the past 35 years. They were members of St. George’s Church. Services were held at St. George’s Church, 300 E.16th Ave. in Apache Junction, at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, March 12. He was interred at Queen of Heaven Cemetery.
Loretta Louise (Duarte) Saenz, age 64, passed away on Wednesday, March 13, 2019 in Evanston, Wyoming. She was born on May 17, 1954 in California to Bertha Ramirez and Eldefonso ‘Tuti’ Duarte. She was survived by her husband, Manuel Saenz; her children, Henry Hernandez, Cathy (Robert) Sommer, Jason Hernandez, Angela Hernandez, Raymond (Melissa) Hernandez, Christopher (Tamika) Hernandez, and Joseph Hernandez; 33 grandchildren and 7 great-
grandchildren; siblings, Ernest (Terry) Villaverde, Louie (Virgie) Duarte, Eldefonso (Pam) Duarte, Juanita Stevens, Rachel (Rick) Montoya, and Joe (Delores) Olivas and numerous nieces and nephews. Loretta was known as Red, Mama Red, and Nana Red by all who loved her. These nicknames came from her red hair and temper. She definitely did not hesitate to speak her mind. Loretta loved celebrating her birthday, but her favorite thing to do was call everyone else on their birthday and sing “Sapo Verde to You.” However, her true joy came from spending time with all her children, grandchildren, family, and best friends. Loretta will be remembered as one of the most amazing cooks who made the best enchiladas and red chile. She was always willing to show anyone how to cook her food. Loretta’s faith in God was insurmountable, which allowed God to use her in so many ways. Her big heart made her the most giving and forgiving person. Loretta didn’t have much, but she always gave without hesitation. Her resourcefulness and determination was what people
relied on. Loretta’s greatest attribute was her ability to love unconditionally. Loretta has left a strong legacy of love, faith, strength, and fabulous cooks. A viewing will be held at Superior Funeral Home, 379 S. Ray Rd. Superior, AZ, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 21, 2019. Services will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 11 Church Ave. Superior, AZ. Visitation will begin at 9 am., with rosary following at 9:30 a.m., and Mass at 10 a.m. She will be laid to rest at Fairview Cemetery. A luncheon will follow the interment at St. Mary’s Center. Exceptional Service was provided to the family from Superior Funeral Home.

Apache Leap Mining Festival Winners Announced This year the first place winner of the parade went to the Superior Fire Department. Second place went to Coppertown Marching Band and third place went to the Assembly of God Mountain Men Camping Group. The mining competition had a $3,000 cash purse. This year’s winners were (total payout): $3,050. Kid Zone activities at the Apache Leap Mining Festival included sawing, mucking, free construction pit for kids under 4, sawing, mucking, KZ sign, spiking, drilling and panning for Apache Tears. Volunteers taught hard rock mining skills and educated children on the history of these skills in the copper mines. Each child was issued a time card and awarded a mining certificate at the end. Head Start is a free pre-school program that prepares children ages 3 and 4 years for kindergarten and promotes school readiness skills for children and their families. Children receive free healthy meals and if qualify, may receive free medical and dental care. Play Bingo in Miami
In 2019, Bingo at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Church on Sullivan St. in Miami will be held on the first and third Tuesday of the month. Central Arizona College students earn All-Arizona academic honors Five of Central Arizona College’s outstanding students have been selected to the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society All-Arizona Academic Team. All-Arizona students demonstrate academic excellence and intellectual rigor combined with leadership and service that extends beyond the classroom to benefit society. Phi Theta Kappa, the American Association of Community Colleges, Arizona Community Colleges, the Arizona Board of Regents and the Follett Higher Education Group help these students reach their educational goals by awarding scholarships and issuing tuition waivers to any of Arizona’s three state universities: Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University or the University of Arizona. Jayden Riedel (Superstition Mountain Campus) received a $750 scholarship as a Second Team scholar. Arcelia AvechucoLopez (Aravaipa Campus), Sylvester
Howard III (San Tan Campus), Michaela Korges (Signal Peak Campus), and Kelly Myszewski (Maricopa Campus) were named Third Team members and each was granted a $500 scholarship. The awards were announced during the All-Arizona Academic Team Recognition Ceremony held at the East Valley Institute of Technology in Mesa, AZ on Wed., February 27, 2019. Nathaniel Bush, a CAC graduate and 2015 First Team Scholar was the keynote speaker and spoke about transformation. Bush graduated with honors from CAC in 2015. His dedication to his collegiate pursuits, fellow students and Phi Theta Kappa membership contributed to his being named to the All-Arizona Academic Team, recognition as a Silver Scholar through the Coca-Cola Foundation and earning a Hites Transfer Scholarship. Lady Miners’ frosh Waddell homers, throws two-hit shutout against Pantherettes By Andrew Luberda Copper Area News San Manuel freshman Jazmyne Waddell tossed a two-hit shutout against defending 1A State Champion Superior last Thursday, leading the way to the Lady Miners’ 10 – 0 victory. The ace of the San Manuel staff improved to 3 – 1 and maintained her 0.00 ERA after surrendering only two hits with a walk and 10 strikeouts, the second time in as many games that she whiffed 10 batters. San Manuel scored three runs in the first, second and fifth innings with a single run in the fourth. San Manuel senior Taya Dockum went
3-for-4 at the plate, including two doubles, with three RBI’s while Waddell added two hits – one a homerun – with four RBI’s. Junior Samantha Waddell was 2-for-3, including a double, and Aubrey Encinas also doubled. In total, the Lady Miners knocked five extra-base hits. The Pantherettes, who suffered only their second defeat of the season (both against 2A teams), were limited to hits by senior Lindsay Ketron and freshman Danika Bryant. Superior up next: Mar. 20 at Ray. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. San Manuel up next: Mar. 20 vs. San Miguel, Mar. 21 at St. Augustine, and Mar. 26 at Globe. All games are scheduled for 4 p.m.
