LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Kearny EMS policies should force reality check Two years ago my 93 year old mother came to live with me in Riverside. Most of the family members had died and we felt this was the best option. She is usually quite adept, walks with a walker, makes herself toast for breakfast, makes her own bed and remains generally lucid. I try to encourage her independence in spite of her increasing frailty. We installed a Life Alert system to give both of us peace of mind whenever I leave to run errands in Kearny or in the Valley. On Wednesday, March 14, she fell in the kitchen while I was away on errands. As taught, she pressed the “button” because she couldn’t get up. Rather than receive assistance, however, Kearny PD and ambulance determined it was OK to let a 93 year old woman lay on the floor until a sheriff’s deputy from Florence got there. When I arrived home she had two bloodied fingers and a sore hip. She waited a long time on the floor and somehow managed to get a chair cushion under her because she was hurting. I found blood all over the legs of my kitchen chair. The

In support of Jeff Crawford The State of Arizona Medical Board should give an abundance of thought and consideration to this specific case, Jeff Crawford, M.D. After working for him for five years, it was quite an experience. He taught me things about the medical care not taught to me in school. When first started working for him, he called me back to watch him do sutures. Taught me why he was using this specific stitch for this kind of laceration. He is a caring, compassionate physician with experience as a medic in our armed forces. He is a great asset to our small communities. Consider him and the other employees as a work family. He and his family are church-oriented and are decent, caring family who we need. Many people here have asked me about Dr. Crawford; “Doc” as we call him. He has seen me as his first patient and I have needed to go see a specialist. “Doc’s” diagnosis is EXACTLY the same as the specialist’s diagnosis. Yes, he IS a good man, good physician and I TRUST HIM not only as a physician, but, as a GOOD FRIEND!!! Please support our “DOC!” Sincerely, /s/ Sandy Kay Giorsetti Winkelman, AZ

deputies did get there, assisted her to a chair and fed her lunch. (She had prepared lunch but fell before she could eat it.) The deputies came back later to see if she was ok and if I had come home. In speaking with the deputies I didn’t seem to get a clear understanding as to why they were here and not Kearny. I asked them several times why didn’t Kearny come. I don’t think they knew Kearny had received the call first. I called Kearny and was told they do not do “lift-assist” in Riverside. They confirmed they received the call for assist. Life Alert also confirmed this. Whatever their definition of “lift-assist” means, my mother fell, was on the floor and hurting. Rather than assessing the person or the problem Kearny used some type of paper protocol that says “we don’t pick people up in Riverside” and left a 93 year old woman on the floor until someone from Florence showed up. Maybe it was a financial decision, we can save money if... She still says every day, “I can’t believe Kearny didn’t come...I had to wait for Florence...I’m so much trouble”. We are not talking about a small problem or misunderstanding here. Kearny received notice of a Life Alert activation in Riverside and did not respond. Kearny does however come to Riverside to pick up hikers and take them to breakfast. Now they want to give hikers free T-shirts. Kearny even erected a sign advertising they are a gateway community to the Az. Trail. Last I checked, the Az. Trail was in Riverside. It’s time for a reality check. Let me be perfectly clear. Your elected Kearny officials are actively promoting the accommodation of all hikers in Riverside while ordering city employees to leave elderly Riverside residents on the floor, bleeding, frightened and alone. Words escape me but

what comes to mind is that Kearny leadership is comprised of depraved human beings. The actions taken by Kearny PD and ambulance personnel (or lack of) would not be considered professional, not even amateur professional. Their actions (or lack of) would be considered wanton disregard. The policies set forth by the city of Kearny would appear to be the same. Your leadership appears to be woefully lacking in core values such as concern for residents and integrity. I’ve lived here 31 years and I don’t believe the people of Kearny want or deserve this. I don’t think any one of them would want their 93 year old mother lying on the floor while city personnel looked the other way. I think we have had enough. I understand that Kearny may say Riverside is under the jurisdiction of Pinal County. They may even say I am a bad daughter. There is no defense that holds water. Reason dictates emergency personnel and ambulance services emanate from Kearny which is 15 minutes away. They were notified, it was their job to respond and they did not. It also clearly appears that they did not want to respond which is a much bigger issue. Hence, the need for sweeping leadership changes. It may be necessary to have a court of law enforce these needed changes. /s/ Janice Salm

Pioneer Days and the Arizona Trail

helped with Pioneer Days as much as my body would allow this past weekend, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Now that the four-day event is over for another year, there are a lot of volunteers who deserve not only congratulations but a long rest. It was four years ago that The Church of the Good Shepherd decided to enter a float in the parade, and Gary Hill and I were the chief volunteers on the project. The theme was the Copper Basin’s history and its future, so Gary and I decided to commemorate the Copper Basin Railroad, the history of Methodist Christianity in this area, and the future of the developing Arizona Trail. We painted two identical scenes, back to back for display in the parade, of an early steam engine pulling ore cars. In the background was Teapot Mountain and a carefully researched image of the first Methodist Church building, from a photo taken in 1916. We also painted two large Masonite panels with the Arizona Trail symbol, complete with a star indicating

Kearny’s position close to the trail. It took us two weeks to put it all together, and we were pretty tuckered at the end. The Arizona Trail was just beginning to be used then. Once in a while a hiker or two would make it into Kearny for a bed, a shower, and a chance to stock up before continuing on the journey. The trail stretches from Mexico to Utah, a real slice of Arizona wilderness, Some people hike all the way through, and others do a stretch at a time, working their way toward completion. Other people day hike portions of the trail. All of them make use of the Gateway Communities, populated areas which welcome the hikers and serve as sources of rest and supply. In the last couple of years, Kearny has earned the title “The friendliest town on the Arizona Trail.” Maybe it started with Gary and Lorraine Birkett, who received phone calls from hikers coming in to the Kelvin trail head and wishing for a pizza. Well, Old Time Pizza delivers to the trail head! Then people started giving hikers

lifts to town, saving them a long walk. It wasn’t too long after that Kearny folks signed up to be Trail Angels, who are publicized on the web and Facebook as willing to meet hikers, bring them in to town, and later take them back to the trail. Gerry Kaufhold placed guest books for hikers to sign all around town. Norm’s IGA set up a special section with items desired by hikers. The General Kearny Inn also receives calls and dispatches volunteer Trail Angels. The GKI also receives packages mailed to the hikers. A recent survey shows that towns along hiking trails benefit economically, not only from the hikers themselves but also from friends and relatives who drive from town to town, providing resupply for these committed athletes. Our experience here shows that this survey is true, and that the economic benefit is even largeer because the town itself is small. The number of hikers is growing. NOBO or SOBO (North bound or South bound) these folks are good for us. Best of all, they are

really fascinating people with great stories to tell. And one of the stories they tell is of the friendliness of Kearny. That’s a reputation we want to keep.

Class ring lost for 40 years returned to Ray alum

Frank Golden, Lakeside resident since 1996, was surprised the first week in March when he found out his high school class ring had been found more than 40 years after losing it. Frank graduated from Ray High School in 1977 and lost his class ring in the fall of the same year while playing basketball at Northern Arizona University. He figured he’d never see it again. However, he received a call earlier in March from his sister, Margaret Ford, a teacher at Ray Elementary, informing him that his ring had been found. A retired police officer in Flagstaff who currently teaches for NAU found the ring on the ground while he was taking a run around the campus. The man called Ray High School and talked to someone there, who, in turn, called Margaret, and she called Frank. One week later the ring was in possession of its rightful owner. The ring is in excellent condition and it makes Frank wonder where it’s been all these years.

“I am happy to have my high school ring back along with all the wonderful memories that go with it!” Frank said. “A big thank you to this man who found it and returned it to me!”

You Are Not Alone. We are here to care for you. Frank Golden is happy to have his high school class ring back. He lost it more than 40 years ago in Flagstaff.
