A Lady to Admire
H
aving survived the aftereffects of a “coughing bug”, and another complaint, I wanted to start concentrating on another Georgie Digs article concerning someone’s early family history. Uppermost on my mind was that I hadn’t written any of the early history of my husband Cliff Wood’s Texas-born mother, Frankie Belle, who most of us referred to as “Nana”. I did write in my book (A CREEKSIDE STORY - FROM BUCKBOARD DAYS TO ECOTOURISM) that before Cliff’s and my marriage I had visited the Wood family’s Panorama Ranch along Aravaipa Creek several times, and Cliff’s mother had given
me her “calling card” that had her name printed on it and on which she had written “One of my favorite girls - you are the master of your fate, you are the captain of your soul - Lovingly, Nana.” I also wrote that I had gotten along fine with Nana, although she hadn’t been very open when it came to talking about personal things, and I was too young and inexperienced to ask any questions. In 1951, she had started writing what she called a brief sketch of her life, but she didn’t finish it. I will now add some of the things I have learned or have been told. Frankie Belle’s father, Charles Merrell Middleton, was recently discharged from
the Texas Rangers when he had married Cora Ellsworth Chisholm in 1875, despite the fact that it was against the wishes of Cora’s mother, Jenny Chisholm, wife of Glenn Thornton Chisholm, both of whom I had written about in my article “Chisholm Relatives”. Of the five girls and two boys born to Charles and Cora Middleton, Frankie Belle (Nana) was the third born on Aug. 11, 1879. In the brief sketch of her life, Nana had written, “My mother passed away on Dec. 25, 1893 - one of the sweetest mothers ever.” Nana must have been fourteen years old then and the three youngest, all girls, must have been less than seven years

Hayden’s Bohrn, Valencia earn AzNFF honors By Andrew Luberda Copper Basin News Hayden High School seniors Robert Bohrn and Frankie Valencia, members of the Lobo football team, were honored by the National Football Foundation – Valley of the Sun Chapter at the 37th Annual Scholar Athlete Awards Banquet, which took place on Saturday, Mar. 24, at the Scottsdale Hilton Resort & Villas. “The awards that were presented on Saturday are a very big honor for Robert and Frankie, their parents and families, the Hayden Community, and Hayden High School,” Hayden head coach John Estrada told the Copper Basin News. “Our football team takes pride in ‘classroom first’ then football. We are not just athletes, we are scholar athletes.” Bohrn, a 1A All-Conference selection, was named to NFF Valley of the Sun Chapter & Fiesta Bowl Charities First Team. He was one of 60 Scholar Athletes honored representing more than 250,000 high school football players from 186 high schools in central and northern Arizona. The winners were selected based on the combined criteria of 40% academics, 40% football accomplishments and 20% school and community citizenship and
participation. “It means a lot,” Bohrn answered when asked what the award means to him. “Especially from people outside of the school to recognize what we have accomplished on the field as well as ion the classroom. Valencia, a 1A East Region First Team selection, was the recipient of the Frances Kush Memorial – “Dedicated Student Athlete Award.” The award was presented by the Fiesta Bowl in memory of the wife of legendary Arizona State University head coach Frank Kush. According to a released statement, Fran was there to remind Coach that although football was a good measure of physical skills, its true value was in teaching young people the benefits of hard work and dedication. She believed that the athletes should be encouraged to translate these sound work ethics into their classroom situations. “It means the world to me,” Valencia said about being chosen for the award. “All throughout high school I have praised my teammates and looked up to the upper classmen. It feels good to receive some praise myself. Hopefully, those I’ve looked up to understand that they are responsible for getting me here.”
Estrada attributed the success of both players to their upbringing at home, support from their parents and families, their excellent work ethic, commitment to be the best, and intelligence. Both players were asked what advice they would give other Hayden student-athletes who aspire to reach the level of excellence they have. “You can practice as much as you want and be the best player on the team but without grades, you aren’t going to be on the field on Friday nights,” Bohrn
answered. Added Valencia: “You need a reason to go out and torture yourself on that field. The best reason to have is to be competitive with your own team, push each other, and eventually you’ll all grow.” Bohrn, Valencia, and 2017 AzNFF Scholar Athlete Ryan Donovan have set the bar high at Hayden, according to Estrada. “My expectations for my younger studentathletes are to continue the trend,” he said. “Hard work will get you places.”

Pinal County Building in Kearny is Getting a New Name
T
his Sunday is Easter Day, the holiest day of the year for Christians around the world and in the Copper Basin. The week before Easter Day is Holy Week, the time for commemorating the events leading to Jesus’ death and resurrection. Our local Christian congregations are welcoming not just their own members but all visitors and curious “first timers.” Do you know that most congregations around the world have only 65 members or less? Yet they add up to 2.2 billion Christians around the world. Someone once told me that the measure of a congregation’s size is not its population but the strength of its belief. I wish all my Christian friends the deep joy of their faith. Less than two weeks ago we marked Pioneer Days in the Copper Basin. It pleased me to see and hear the Ray High School Band in the parade, and I’m not the only person who appreciated their presence. After all, she had raised nine children by her husband, Glenn Thornton Chisholm, who had been killed in a wagon accident in 1868, after which she had remarried in 1879 and had a son. She had written, “As the saying goes, if you are from Texas and can count to a hundred, you are eligible to teach.” A few years after her 1899 marriage to cowboy/rancher John Martin Wood, Frankie Belle’s three younger sisters came to Arizona to live with her and her husband. It was said that Frankie Belle was the “glue” that held her mother’s children together.

The Ray softball team won three of the four games it played last week at the Chandler Prep Invite, including a pair of one-run victories against Yuma Catholic and Goldwater on Mar. 24. The Lady Cats defeated the 3A Shamrocks, 10 – 9, before a 1 – 0 victory against 5A Goldwater. Against the Bulldogs, senior leadoff hitter Janae Ruiz came through with the game-winning RBI with one of her two hits in the game. Senior ace Daniella Hinojos earned the complete-game shutout win, surrendering only four hits with six strikeouts. Up next: Mar. 29 at Leading Edge Academy (3:30 pm), Mar. 31 vs. Globe (DH, 11 am and 1 pm), Dani Montano looks for a chance to steal. Staci Hatfield | Submitted and Apr. 3 at Superior (4 pm).
