LETTER TO THE EDITOR Family First Pregnancy Care Center: Outside for a Walk Growing up in rural Ohio, the winters seemed unending, with the snow and cold I remember being indoors for a lot of the time. There were 7 of us kids in our family, so “cabin fever” seemed to come on early in winter. My mother with all her wisdom knew she had to separate us kids so we didn’t kill each other! She would tell us why don’t you go outside for a walk? Maybe it was just her way of saying you kids are driving me crazy, only a mother knows?! But there was something about going outside, the cool fresh air, with the snow glistening as the sun would shine on it sparkled like diamonds, I will never forget it. You know, getting outside away from your immediate surroundings indoors, seems to clear the cobwebs out of your head. It could be 10 degrees out, with the ground covered with snow, but when spring came, the daffodils and crocus flowers would start to poke up through the snow. It was as if they knew, no matter what it looked like outside, it was time for spring, time to blossom, time for new growth! That walk seemed to put everything in a better prospective, and the faster we walked the less cold it seemed outside,

sometimes the walk would turn into a run, like a horse getting out of the barn, there was no holding us back! I think there is nothing better for our health than a good long walk! I am not sure how it came about that this wonderful time turned into a political statement for us on things we like or don’t like, we have walks against this or for that, it has taken all the fun out of it! For me a walk is still that time to get out, enjoy the fresh air, enjoy the open spaces and look at the beautiful world God has created for us, a time to celebrate life! It is in this spirit that all of us at Family First are going to take a walk! We are having a walk to celebrate life, a walk for life! It will be to celebrate mothers and fathers, the young children and teens, to celebrate the family! We celebrate all

the children, those born into a family, those in foster care, and those children that are adopted into a new family! It will be a walk to celebrate the community we live in, to look outside of our immediate surroundings, to look outside of problems we may face and maybe open our eyes to see someone else here in our community! We invite you join us, Saturday, March 18, from 8-10 a.m. and March for our community. We will be meeting at Family First Oracle office at 1575 W. American Ave. We will have a cake to celebrate the day along with all the fresh air you can take in! Its springtime, winter is over, time to get out and enjoy the great outdoors! God Bless, /s/ Frank and Clare Grochocki

Progress for speed bumps in residential Kearny By Mila Besich-Lira Copper Basin News Kearny residents recently started requesting speed bumps placed on their street to prevent speeding through residential neighborhoods. For several meetings the Kearny Council and Staff had been discussing the current speed bump installation policy and researching any potential changes to the policy. After careful review of the options for speed bump installation policies, the council voted to allow residents to follow a procedure which will require a petition to be signed by the residents

on the street where a speed bump is being requested. If there are sufficient signatures the council may allow for the installation. However signage will need to be installed on both sides of the speed bump and the residents of the area will need to pay for a portion of the installation of the requested speed bump. The council also determined that they would approve the installation of a portable speed bump mechanism that would allow for the speed bump to be moved in the event that there is drainage or other traffic problems with the installation of the speed bump.

Sam Hosler returns to the Copper Basin News

his is the first of what I hope to be a weekly column on the towns and people of the Copper Basin. The title “Along the Gila” is a bit generic, but I mean to include the people along the San Pedro as well. We do, after all, have much in common. Our histories, our work, our families are very much entwined. Yes, we have town rivalries (mostly around sports), but everyone here knows that we have a common economy, a common and beautiful location, and a pride in our rural setting. For more than two years I wrote a column as Mayor of Kearny. I don’t know if you noticed, but when I started that column it was all about Kearny – Council doings, meetings coming up, explanation of ordinances, and publicity for various events which focused on Kearny happenings. Over time, however, I found myself writing about regional things which affected Kearny, especially since the emergence of the Mayor’s Group.

keep in touch with town governments, schools, and all our businesses. Our government services and medical services are important too, and new developments should be reported. But I will also try to keep up with other, quieter things which might go unnoticed. For example, “Railroad Jim” McDaniels was commemorated in a memorial service at the General Kearny Inn last Friday. This quiet, gentle

man, worked for years on the Santa Fe and Copper Basin Railroads. He was a voracious reader, and served on the Board of the Kearny Town Library. It was his wish that the Kearny Library be remembered after his death, so at the memorial service his long-time friend Doug Beatty presented a check to Janet Danilow, Kearny’s Librarian, for $2,500. I think his love of Kearny should be known and remembered by us.

Pioneer Days Villains and Heroes 2017 We live in an area where people ventured far from home to settle new territory, some to escape troubles and others who caused trouble. What a great theme for parade entries whether it be on a wagon, trailer bed, truck, car, bicycles or on foot. Use your imagination for something historical, serious or comical. Ginger Chester and Kelly Hunt Pacheco will head up the parade committee and are awaiting your entries. The parade will start at the Laundromat on Tilbury and head up hill to the GKI. Lineup begins at 9 a.m. with the parade beginning at 10 a.m. New to all of us this year is the way carnival pre=sales will be held. Brown Carnival offers bracelets for unlimited rides for $30 daily. According to our recent information, you can purchase presale cards at the Chamber office for $20 per child per day which are then turned in at the ticket booths at the carnival for the wristband of the day. Be sure to purchase tickets from the Queen and Jr. Queen candidates. Drawing for cash prizes will be Thursday night at 7:30 at the ramada in the center of the carnival area. T-shirt presales are underway at this time at the Chamber office and will be the only ones available. Denise Robinault and Melissa Lopez have been securing ads for the back of the t-shirts. Vendors under the leadership of Nancy Hinojos and Rosalind Padilla will line vendor row. Food vendors are our local Lara’s Sun Clan Catering with Indian fry bread, Navajo tacos and New Mexico Posole; We Scream for

Ice Cream; Big Papa’s Concessions which sells Philly’s, sausage and burgers; Texas Twisters Lemonade; I&C Kitchen featuring fry bread, chile, burritos, fries; Jake’s Donuts; Diamond W hot dogs, pulled pork, corn, pretzels, nachos, variety of beverages; Dominguez Mexican menu. Kearny Koyotes 4H will be selling ice to the vendors. Merchandise vendors are still signing up. Check out the music of the Cardells at the end of vendor row on Friday, from 5-9 p.m. Softball games will be played at both fields and team roping at the Posse grounds. On Saturday check out the GKI steak dinner with special music; La Cantina special event; and the Elks will hold a Battle of the DJ’s.

This is our annual time for reunions and fun! So make plans now to attend.

HWUSD Superintendent discusses challenges with county schools Gila County Superintendent Roy Sandoval recently brought together local school administrators and legislators for a conversation about some of the challenges that rural Arizona educators are tackling every day. Representatives David Cook and T.J. Shope as well as Senator Frank Pratt joined Gila County school administrators for the meeting on Friday, Feb. 10 at Globe High School. “We’re really trying to bring everyone to the table on a regular basis,” says Gila County Superintendent Roy Sandoval. “Establishing an ongoing relationship and trust with our representatives helps ensure that the needs of Gila County Schools take a front seat at the state level.” The conversation centered around creative ways to combat the teacher shortage, including proposed legislation that would provide tuition waivers to folks interested in becoming teachers in rural Arizona. The group discussed strategies for lifting up current school employees through the ranks to become teachers. “We have to grow our own teachers in rural communities,” said Sandoval. “In the end, doing that strengthens our schools as well as our communities.”

Jeff Gregorich, Superintendent of Hayden-Winkelman Schools (pictured second from left), meets with other school administrators and legislators about the challenges of rural school districts.

Students at Leonor Hambly School learn about Pearl Harbor By John Hernandez Copper Basin News

The 4th and 5th grade students at the Leonor Hambly K-8 School in Winkelman were treated to a great presentation on Pearl Harbor by author Bess Taubman. Bess is the author of the book My Pearl Harbor Scrapbook 1941: A Nostalgic Collection of Memories. Bess created the book format and wrote it along with writer Ernest Arroyo. It has won a number of awards and is currently the most popular book at the Pearl Harbor gift shop. It is her first book. Bess greeted the students with “Aloha” and explained the meaning of the word to the students. She also passed out leis to the students and teachers. Her presentation included video and photographs of the Pearl Harbor attack. She talked about how she got the idea for writing the book and that it took nearly five years to complete it. The idea came at a visit to Pearl Harbor 25 years ago. In the gift shop, she noticed that the books about Pearl Harbor were big and thick books and looked as if written for scholars. She thought that the amazing story of the men who died and those that survived the Pearl Harbor attack needed to be told in a simpler format. She urged the students that want to write to keep on writing and not give up no matter how long it takes. The presentation covered the events leading up to the attack by the Japanese, to the aftermath which resulted in martial law being declared in Hawaii and the internment of Japanese immigrants and Japanese-Americans in prison camps. She drew parallels to the 9-11 attack and the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. The presentation was enthusiastically

embraced by the students who asked many questions and were able to answer most of the questions that Bess asked them. Bess said she feels that the Pearl Harbor story needs to be told and learned by the youth so it will not be forgotten. Bess Taubman lives in Phoenix and is a writer, designer and publisher (Mapmania Publishing) and has created historical educational products including the Pearl Harbor Visitor’s Guide, the Battleship Missouri Visitors Guide and Kids “All About”: Pearl Harbor Dec. 7, 1941 pamphlet. She has been invited back and returns to Pearl Harbor every Dec. 7 for the special remembrance ceremonies and to visit with the Pearl Harbor survivors. She also does book signings while there. You can learn more about the book at mypearlharborscrapbook.com and visit them on Facebook. The book is available at Amazon.com.

Defending state Champs get season-opening win By Andrew Luberda Copper Basin News The defending State Champion Ray softball team started the new season just like it ended last year’s. With a win. The Lady Bearcats scored in each of the game’s four innings, including an eight-run fifth on their way to a convincing 17 – 1 season-opening victory at San Carlos last

Friday. Sophomore Amee Kenyon went 3-for-3 and drove in four runs to lead the Lady Cats. Fellow sophomore Daniella Hinojos doubled and had three RBI while Julie Meza, another sophomore, tripled and drove in two runs. Hinojos picked up the complete-game victory, allowing only two hits and an earned run in the five-inning, 88-pitch start. She walked five and struck out 11 Lady Braves’ batters in the game.

Cats score 14 runs in first, crush Braves By Andrew Luberda Copper Basin News The Ray baseball teams scored 14 runs in the first inning of last Friday’s game at San Carlos and 12 more during the last two innings on its way to a decisive 26 – 1 win, the Bearcats’ third of the season. Senior Charlie Romero led the Cats’ offensive attack with three hits and five RBI. Jordan Pace hit a triple and drove in

four runs in the win. Noah Warren had a hit and four RBI while sophomore Morgan Bray (two hits) and senior Anthony Acuna, who doubled in the game, each drove in three runs. Senior starting pitcher Brett Fackiner picked up his first win of the year after pitching a one-hit complete game. The only run he allowed was unearned. He walked two and fanned nine Braves’ hitters in the 68-pitch outing.
