OBITUARY Maria Christina ‘Christine Mendoza’ Alvarez Maria Christina Alvarez, better known as Christine Mendoza, of Superior, joined our Heavenly Father on Wednesday, April 3, 2019. She was 69 years old. Christine was born in Patagonia, Arizona on July 23, 1949 to parents Raul and Catalina Sanchez. She had 9 siblings, sisters, Mercy, Cuca, Connie, Lucy and Helen and brothers, Frank, Alfred, Raymond, and Frank. Christine married Robert Alvarez. She gained 2 step children, Mike and Richard, and together she and Robert
had 3 boys, Henry, Robert and Albert. She also had 14 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Christine was a homemaker and food service worker. She was known for her big heart, watching westerns and love for the Arizona Diamondbacks. She was taken way too soon and will forever be remembered for her infectious smile and love for her grand kids. Christine is preceded in death by her parents Raul and Catalina Sanchez, sisters Mercy Ramos and Cuca

Prevention is key when it comes to wildfire risk reduction
The adage is true. One spark can start a wildfire – just like the Sawmill Fire in Southern Arizona. And every year, people continue to be the number one cause of wildfires in the state. With the abundance of winter moisture across Arizona, the Department of Forestry and Fire Management wants to remind people not to get complacent. Sunday, April 7, kicked off Southwest Wildfire Awareness Week with this year’s
theme, ‘Prevention today for protection tomorrow.’ The goal of the week is to promote actions that prevent human-caused wildfires and reduce the risk of wildfire to homes and our Arizona communities. And prevention is key when it comes to wildfire risk reduction. Homeowners can do simple tasks to keep wildfire threat low by creating defensible space around their property. Oracle

Firewise suggests that the defensible space be 30 feet around your home. The Town of Kearny, this week, announced that on April 19 it will begin warning and citing homeowners for having weeds, dry shrubs or dead trees on their property. Drivers can help by ensuring tow chains are secure, never tossing cigarette butts out the window, and making sure the vehicle – and tires are in good condition before getting on the road.
To promote the week, DFFM will be focused on increased social media marketing and public service announcements. Pitchers dominating as Superior returns to top of 1A rankings
By Andrew Luberda Copper Area Sports The Superior baseball team reclaimed its position at the top of the 1A rankings thanks in part to a couple of superb pitching performances last week, including a combined no-hitter against Duncan last Tuesday. “Our pitchers have been throwing well, but what has been the key is our defense behind them,” Superior head coach Manuel Ortega told the Superior Sun. “We are making plays for our pitchers. Easter Egg Hunt at US 60 Park
On Saturday, April 20, the Superior Fire Department and VFW #3584 will be hosting an Easter Egg Hunt at the US-60 Park in Superior at 2 p.m. The Hunt will be open to all children 12 and under. This community event will provide kids the opportunity to play outside and hunt for some of the over 1,300 eggs filled with candy that will be hidden. Come join us for some family fun! Flag Retirement Ceremony
In order to see all local American flags are retired with the proper level of respect and reverence, VFW #3584 in Superior will be conducting a Flag Retirement Ceremony on Saturday, April 13, at Fairview Cemetery in Superior. The Ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. with the firing of a ceremonial cannon. There will be several local speakers representing our nation’s military veterans, the youth leadership, and our community leaders. This event will provide an education on our flag, it’s history, and the proper ways which to present and retire each flag. There will be a free luncheon at the VFW at 405 W Main St in Superior following the ceremony for all who attend. Also, all communities from the Copper Corridor are encouraged to bring their old tattered and worn flags to the VFW in Superior to see they are retired with the dignity they deserve. Tardeada Benefit to Be Held
A benefit tardeada will be held as a fundraiser for Conchita Lopez on Sunday, April 14, from 1-7 p.m. at the Los Hermanos Ballroom in Superior. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for kids 12 and younger. Admission includes a dinner plate of red or green chile, rice, beans and tortilla. Menudo/posole will be available. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: • Supervises the Seasonal Lifeguards. • Establishes the pool hours of operation and schedules staff. • Performs maintenance tasks which include moving high pressure hoses approximately 200 feet, sweeping and scrubbing bathrooms and pool tile, emptying garbage cans and setting up and taking down folding chairs and tables. • Uses judgment to determine if patrons and staff are safely and properly conducting themselves • Communicates with staff members and the public in order to enforce pool rules to guard public safety. • Completes written documents regarding accidents, incidents, and other related items • Makes daily written entries into a logbook to outline and document the day’s activities • Monitors the pool chemical levels to verify a safe environment for the public and staff. • Monitors pool chemical and other needed supply levels to assure continuous operation. • Perform other duties and activities as needed and/or assigned REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to meet and be firm and effective with the public; react quickly and calmly in emergencies, monitor the activities of swimmers and quickly detect problem areas, and deal tactfully and courteously with pool patrons and the general public. Manager needs to have knowledge of pool chemicals and testing.
