As I continued down the hill, there were larger items, such as a wooden pallet, which were lying beside the garbage bags. My mind went back a few days, when I saw young

Kearny Glass & Mirror to be featured on Gas

By John Hernandez Copper Basin News Jennifer and Owen O’Brien are the latest owners of Kearny Glass & Mirror. The company has been in business over 30 years with an excellent rating and reputation. The Owens purchased it two years ago and are continuing the company’s tradition of quality work and service. Recently they performed a custom job for the Fly-In-Hi automotive shop in Phoenix as part of an episode of the popular television program, Gas Monkey Garage Rehab. Gas Monkey Garage Rehab travels around the country looking for auto shops that need help. They are one of the most popular automotive shows along with Fast N’ Loud on television. Both shows are on the Discovery Channel and have huge followings. The O’Brien’s experience with Gas Monkey Garage Rehab began when Jennifer submitted the name and contact information of their company to the Discovery Channel as being interested and available if one of their programs wanted to use them. Richard Rawlings, leader of the team for the show called them on Jan. 12, a Friday. He told them he had called them because of their good past record. Owen was in the middle of a job and didn’t believe them at first. He told them to email him and send him the information. When he received a response, he called them back realizing they were the actual people from the television show. They drove to Phoenix that Friday and spoke with Russell Holmes, the project manager for the show. GMGR wanted a set of custom double doors made and installed within a seven-day

time frame. Companies in Phoenix had been called about the job but said they could not do it within the time allowed, saying it would take at least a couple of months to get the products needed and complete the job. Owen quoted them a price and it was accepted. Owen and Jennifer did not realize it at the time but they were being filmed during the negotiation process. Then the difficulties began. Being that it was a weekend, Owen couldn’t order the products needed for the project until Monday. They were unable to get their needed products until Wednesday which left them a fourday window to get the job done. Each piece had to be custom built. They ran into some other difficulties which you will see in the show. “It was a lot of work,” said Owen. “We really had to work with our vendors. It was really intense, it was rough. I never experienced that much stress in a job.” Kearny Glass & Mirrors completed the project in the time agreed upon. When it was over, they had custom built and installed two large windows and showroom doors that open up to a height of 9 feet 6 inches and allowed two lifted jeeps inside the showroom. They are the first company to do custom glass work in any of the show’s episodes. “We were proud and honored to have been given this opportunity,” said Jennifer. The O’Briens have been asked to do some more shows. During the filming of their episode, Owen and Jennifer talked to the hosts about the town of Kearny and gave them information about the town. The episode is expected to be shown in July or August of this year. The Copper Basin Chamber of Commerce

Owen and Jennifer O’Brien of Kearny Glass & Mirror. may host a block party and showing of the episode when it comes out. Congratulations on a job well done! Top-ranked Ray defeats No. 2 Superior, 12 – 3

By Andrew Luberda Copper Area News In the first matchup between the two teams that played for last year’s 1A State Championship, No. 1-ranked Ray defeated No. 2 Superior last Tuesday, 12 – 3. The most recent result was nearly as close as the narrow 1 – 0 Lady Cats’ victory in last year’s title game, in which both teams entered with the same spot in the rankings as last week’s contest. The Lady Cats’ offense pounded out eight extra-base hits, including six doubles and a pair of home runs, against the Lady Panthers,

who did not throw their ace, Kiki Arriola, in the game. The defending champions started fast and finished strong, scoring four runs in the first and eight more in the final three innings, including a five-run seventh inning. Senior Ema Alverado and Julie Meza, a junior, each homered for Ray and combined for three RBI. Leadoff hitter Janae Ruiz, who went 4-for-4, hit one of the six doubles. Danni Montano, Tara Lorona and Chelsea BoydFlores accounted for three more. Lorona and Boyd-Flores each drove in a game-high three runs. Senior Daniella Hinojos went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles.

Hinojos, who has allowed only five runs – three earned – in her last eight starts, was not as sharp as she has been, as evidenced by the seven walks allowed and two earned runs. Still, she was impressive, slowing down Superior’s high-octane offense that entered the game having scored 11 runs or more in its last six victories, including a 25-run outburst versus San Carlos Mar. 12. Superior was held to six hits, all singles. Tori Juarez went 2-for-2 with two hits and a pair of

Superior comeback falls short against Ray By Andrew Luberda Copper Area News The No. 2-ranked Ray baseball team wants to end its season the same way defending champion Superior ended last year. The Bearcats showed they are a contender for the Panthers’ crown, holding off a late Superior comeback in a 6 – 5 victory last Tuesday. The seventh-ranked Panthers trailed 6 – 2 before plating three runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Ray junior Jaden Pace had two of the Cats’ seven hits in the game, going 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI. The teams combined to reach base 15 times via a walk. The Cats used four pitchers who combined to fan 13 Superior hitters. Freshman Derek Figueroa whiffed six, starter Richard Valenzuela fanned five in an inning and a 1/3. Superior junior Kale Major went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI. He accounted for two of the Panthers’ four hits. Steven Ybarra, another junior, also doubled and

had two RBI. Ybarra, who started on the bump, took the loss, allowing five runs – two earned – on three hits with six strikeouts and four walks. Major, who appeared in relief, allowed a run on three hits with three strikeouts and four walks. Ray up next: Apr. 12 at Hayden and Apr. 13 at San Manuel. Both games are scheduled for 4 p.m. Superior up next: Apr. 12 at Ft. Thomas, Apr. 13 vs. San Tan Foothills, and Apr. 17 vs. Hayden. All games are scheduled for 4 p.m.

Kelly Haddad to be honored Friday

By John Hernandez Copper Basin News The late Kelly Haddad, a long time Justice of the Peace and political figure in Pinal County, is being honored with the renaming of the Pinal County Kearny Administration building. The building will now be the Kelly Haddad Administration Building. Supervisor Pete Rios with Pinal County Facilities Department announced the

renaming of the building to honor Mr. Kelly Haddad for his years of service to the community. Mr. Haddad spent most of his life not only serving his community but honorably serving his country, county and state. Kelly Haddad was born in Superior, Arizona in 1927. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and an Army veteran of the Korean War. He became a merchant and entrepreneur, moving to the small mining

community of Sonora, the Mexican section of Ray. He owned a clothing store there and quickly became involved in giving back to the community. He joined the Amador-Larini Unit 69 of the American Legion

which was known as the Spanish-American chapter. Ray had its own American Legion Post. He became the President of the Ray-Sonora Little League in 1957. Haddad would then enter politics, being elected

Justice of the Peace in 1958. He served eight terms in the Ray-Sonora and Kearny districts before retiring. His political career spanned three decades. In the 1950s and early 60s, he was instrumental in seeing

that justice was ensured for the Mexican-American community during the Civil Rights movement. Like a number of veterans that returned from the war, he saw the discrimination and inequality in the mining towns in the area and knew that they deserved better. He helped bring about good changes in the community. He was politically active serving on county commissions and civic boards. Local politicians sought his endorsement and advice. Lionel Ruiz, retired Pinal County Supervisor for District 1 said of Haddad, “He fit into every community that he lived in and made it a better community. He helped a lot of people. He knew how to treat people.” As a judge, he would counsel many of those that had gotten into trouble and help make them better. Whenever Lionel was in Kearny, he made it a point to visit Kelly and his wife Navval at their store. “They were always welcoming. He had a good family and wife. He gave me a lot of advice. He was a mentor to me,” Lionel said. Haddad was involved in community activities and organizations for 46 years including: Pinal County Fair Commission, Pinal County Development Commission, Copper Basin Chamber of Commerce, Rotary International, B.P.O.E. (Elks), Lions Club, American Legion, VFW, Moose and Masons. On April 13, 2018 at 10 a.m., there will be a building dedication to honor Kelly Haddad in Kearny at the county administration building. The public is invited and light refreshments will be served.
