Oracle Horse Owners Evacuation Preparation Group to meet April 12 Do you live in Oracle? Do you own horses? If you answered yes to both questions, ask yourself this: what will you do with your horses should a wildfire threaten the area? Wildfires in Arizona are just a fact of the environment. Arizona gets dry and hot during the summer. Both factor in heavily to wildfires. Oracle Fire District and the Oracle Firewise Group want to make sure that everyone, including the equine residents

of the area, are safely evacuated in the event of a wildfire. Several years ago, the town of Kearny was threatened by a wildfire in the Gila River bottom. The fire came very near to the corrals where many residents stabled their horses. They had to rush to get their animals out safely. A couple of ranchers in Dudleyville offered to take the animals in the emergency, an offer that not many knew about in the panic of the moment. Oracle wants to prevent this type of confusion. The next meeting date of the Oracle Horse Owners Evacuation Preparation Group (OHO) will be Thursday, April 12, at 6 p.m. at the Oracle Fire Station. The purpose of this meeting is:

• To educate Oracle residents of the need to prepare for evacuations in advance of an emergency. • To connect horse owners with other horse owners, to help one another. • To determine safe staging areas and temporary shelters. • To establish a list of people with horse trailers who are willing to re-enter evacuated areas of Oracle to pick up horses in staging areas. • To communicate this list of people to the Oracle Fire District to ensure access to staging areas. To sign up for future meeting dates and more information, please email: horses.are.purlove@gmail.com or call the Oracle Fire Station: 896-2980.

Peppersauce Cave graffiti removal project continues; Cave resources damaged by graffiti, responsible cave ethics encouraged Peppersauce Cave, on the Santa Catalina Ranger District of the Coronado National Forest, has been the focus of a multi-year, multi-phase graffiti removal project by Central Arizona Grotto. The next cleanup project is scheduled for April 13 through 15, 2018. The group site at Peppersauce Campground will be occupied by the group for the weekend. The cave, located in Nugget Canyon in the Santa Catalina Mountains south of Oracle, is the most heavily visited wild cave in Arizona, with an estimated 15,000 visitors per year. While many cavers enjoy responsible recreational spelunking, others leave behind graffiti and trash. Graffiti removal has been an ongoing effort by the Central Arizona Grotto (CAG) of the National Speleological Society (NSS). Two significant removal projects in eight work sessions between December, 2001 and June, 2003, and three sessions between February and June, 2010 were coordinated by Central Arizona Grotto, and the Peppersauce Cave Conservation Project (PCCP) to remove graffiti and trash. Most recently, CAG, along with volunteers from the Arizona State University’s Outdoor Club and southern Arizona cavers removed 150 to 200 tags and 300 pounds of trash between late September and early October, 2017. One November weekend they replaced kiosk panel covers, installed the first group of 14 highly-reflective “OUT” signs, and removed another 100 graffiti tags. In February 250 to 300 tags were removed, and 20 highlyreflective white arrows placed to point to the easiest exit of the cave. Using a complex system of a generator, compressor, high-pressure hoses, extension cords, lighting and a communication system, volunteers use glass beads for sand blasting and bristle brushes with biodegradable solvent to remove the tags, and spread tarps to catch and collect the beads and excess solvent for removal from the cave. CAG has entered into an agreement with the Forest to continue work in 2018, with the following goals: • Clean/remove all graffiti in Peppersauce Cave and continue monitoring for new graffiti issues; • Restore/replace signage on the trail leading to Peppersauce Cave;

A volunteer looks over some of the graffiti in Peppersauce Cave. • Replace reflective IN/OUT arrows in the ceiling to reduce graffiti arrow tags. Throughout the year, CAG will work with other NSS grottos and PCCP qualified individuals cooperatively to fulfill project goals. Caves are non-renewable resources, fragile and easily impacted. Every entry into a cave creates disturbances, the cumulative effects of which can dramatically alter cave environments. Coronado National Forest staff encourage visitors to the cave to practice responsible use and cave conservation ethics: • Move carefully through a cave to avoid damaging cave features. • Pack it in, pack it out. Anything brought into a cave and left behind is out of place. Remove everything taken into the cave, including human waste. • Leave what you find, never remove natural or historic features from a cave. • Respect wildlife avoid disturbing cave wildlife. • Never tolerate intentional damage, defacing or artifact theft from caves. If you see something, report it. For safe caving trips, Forest staff recommend you plan ahead, be prepared, and know what to expect from the cave you are visiting. Let others know of your plans, and your anticipated schedule. Choose appropriate clothing, equipment and safety gear, and pack more food and water than you plan on using.

Annual horseshoe tourney set for Saturday in San Manuel – all throwers welcome The annual Fiesta de la Primavera horseshoe tournament is April 14 at the St. Bartholomew Horseshoe Arena, Park Ave. and Main in San Manuel with sign ups at 1 p.m. and play starting at 2 p.m., according to director Roberto Estrada. “We are going to stick with the ‘Blind Draw’ format so who knows what will happen this year?” Estrada said. In a blind draw, all names (male and female) are put in a hat and teams are drawn randomly. Players from Superior, Kearny or Winkelman could be matched with those from Mammoth, San Manuel or Oracle. One of the trophy teams last year was a combination of Winkelman and San Manuel throwers, according to Estrada.

The cost is $10 per person. Trophies will be awarded to the top four teams. “We are fortunate to have the support and generosity of Justice of the Peace Arnold Estrada, Judges Carter Olson and Gilbert Figuero as well as Albert Estrada and local business owner Abe Romo who donated the trophies,” Estrada said. After the main contest, throwers can make their own team and play in a “Split the Pot” tournament. The cost is $5 per player. “For another $5, players can compete in a ‘Winner Takes All’ ringer contest. Individual contestants throw eight horseshoes with the highest scorer taking home the pot,” Estrada explained.

organization whose mission is to protect, maintain, enhance, promote and sustain the Arizona Trail as a unique encounter with the land. To learn more, visit https://aztrail.org/events/50thanniversary-events/azt-in-a-day/ The 800-mile trail has been divided into nearly 100 sections ranging from 2.1 to 13.8 miles in length. Participants will have 24 hours to complete their portion of trail. This massive undertaking is free, and open to everyone. The Arizona Trail Association hopes to engage over 1,500 people from all over the world. “We are excited to encourage outdoor enthusiasts to explore the Arizona Trail’s deserts, mountains, canyons, forests and communities during this unique endeavor,” said Matthew Nelson, Executive Director of the Arizona Trail Association. “It took tens of thousands of volunteers over two decades to build the Arizona Trail, and now we’re delighted to be able to invite everyone to share this amazing public resource. No matter how far you can hike, run or ride, we hope everyone commits to spending some time on the AZT throughout 2018 and especially

on October 6 for AZT IN A DAY.” The AZT passes through 8 wilderness areas, 4 National Forests, 2 National Parks, 1 National Memorial, 1 State Park and near 33 gateway communities. Arizona’s rugged terrain and sometimes harsh climate require that all participants be well prepared. Several access points require 4-wheel drive or high clearance. A few sections of the trail are more remote and require extra planning. For these sections, participants familiar with backpacking will be required to camp in particular areas at least a day before the actual event to be ready to complete their portion on Oct. 6. The date for this event was chosen to align with the same week of the 50th Anniversary of the National Trail System Act, which was enacted in October 1968. The October 6 event will honor the sustained effort that has gone into building, maintaining and preserving the nation’s pathways with hopes to introduce new people to the natural beauty of Arizona’s landscapes and communities. AZT IN A DAY is one of the hundreds of ways the 50th Anniversary is being

celebrated across the country. For more information about AZT IN A DAY or the Arizona Trail, email ata@

If you have not previously received notice of its seizure for forfeiture, this is also notice pursuant to A.R.S. § 13-4306(C). Owners, interest holders or claimants who have filed a claim may have remedies available pursuant to A.R.S. §§ 13-4301 et seq. In some circumstances, a person claiming a lawful interest may file, within fifteen (15) days of notice of seizure for forfeiture, an application under A.R.S. § 13-4310(B) to obtain a hearing on the provisional return of the property pending the outcome of a judicial proceeding on its forfeiture. If an application for such a hearing is filed, it also must comply with the requirements of A.R.S. § 13-4311(E) and (F), and must be filed in the Superior Court in Pinal County. Notice of the order to show cause hearing must be served upon the Attorney for the State at least five (5) working days before the hearing is held. Under A.R.S. § 13-4306(G), an owner of property may obtain the release of seized property by posting with the Attorney for the State a surety bond or cash in an amount equal to the full fair market value of the property, as determined by the Attorney for the State. The State may refuse to release the property if: 1) the bond or cash tendered is not in an amount equal to the full fair market value of the property; or 2) the property is retained as contraband or as evidence; or 3) the property is particularly altered or designed for use in conduct giving rise to forfeiture. If you post bond or cash in lieu of the property, the bond or cash and not the property will be subject to forfeiture. If you wish to post a bond or cash in lieu of the property, you may contact the Attorney for the State. If no Notice of Pending Forfeiture is made within sixty (60) days after the seizure of the property for forfeiture, any owner or interest holder may request release of the property, pending further proceedings pursuant to the forfeiture statutes, to be commenced within seven (7) years after actual discovery by the State of the last act giving rise to forfeiture. The request should be addressed to the Attorney for the State and should show that the requestor is an owner or interest holder. If the Attorney for the State declines to authorize release of the property by the seizing agency, the request may be addressed to the Superior Court in Pinal County. Any attempt to hide, transfer, convey, or sell any interest in any property seized for forfeiture, or to deposit it with a third party, place it beyond the jurisdiction of the Court, diminish its value or commingle it with other property may result in forfeiture of other property of equal value. If the property is conveyed, alienated, encumbered, disposed of, received, removed from the jurisdiction of the Court, concealed, or otherwise rendered unavailable for forfeiture, these acts may constitute facilitation of money laundering and money laundering, for which you may be criminally liable. Additionally, you may be sued for the fair market value of the property together with reasonable investigative expenses and attorney’s fees, in addition to other criminal and civil remedies for fraud. Evan Apuron competes at Sectional Championship Swim Meet In USA Swimming, the competition level between State Championships and National Championships is referred to as Sectional Championships. The United States is divided into Sections. This year’s Sectional Meet for the Four Corner States (Arizona, Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico) was held at the Phoenix

32 swimmers advancing to the finals in the evening. It is quite an accomplishment to qualify for this meet. Evan Apuron qualified as a 14 year old boy, which is a tremendous achievement. He qualified to swim 5 individual events at the meet, but chose to swim just three to gain experience at this level of competition. Apuron swam the 200 Breaststroke and 200 Butterfly to a 59th and 46th place respectively on his first day of competition. On his second day of competition, Apuron earned a top 32 finish in prelims in the 400 Individual Medley (IM) with a time of 4:15.70, more than 2 seconds faster than his previous best. That evening in the Finals Session, Apuron had another great swim to finish 30th. Sea Lions Coach Alex Gort proudly summed up his thoughts. “Evan did a great job as the first swimmer to represent the Sea Lions at Sectionals. He set a tough goal for himself and then he did the hard work that was necessary to accomplish it. The experience he gained at the meet will be valuable in the future- a future that I am very excited about,” he said. Gort went on to add, “I am confident that more Sea Lions will qualify for Sectionals next year.” Apuron learned to swim and got his first taste of competitive swimming as a Sea Lion,
