Arizona USDA Director visits Superior

The Arizona Director of the United States Department of Agriculture, J.C. Sherman III met with officials from the Town of Superior, Superior Chamber of Commerce and Rebuild Superior Inc. last week. The visit included a tour of Superior to the Waste Water Treatment Plant, Superior Municipal Airport, Industrial Park, several neighborhoods along with Town Hall. Town officials shared with the director the major projects that the Town is focussing on including the construction of a new Multi-Generational Center and construction of a more efficient and reliable waste water treatment plant. Many may ask, why does the USDA provide such a variety of services when their name would indicate that they are focused on the needs of the agricultural community? The USDA began providing these support and funding for basic needs of rural communities as the agricultural businesses needed more services for their workers and their families. They

had jobs to work at in farms but there was no funding to build basic community necessities such as schools, infrastructure and other business needs. The federal government tasked the USDA with developing the funding mechanisms to grow the rural parts of America. Currently the Town is approved for a grant from the USDA to evaluate the full collection system of the Waste Water Treatment Plan. This study will evaluate the system which collects the waste water throughout town. This study will help to determine if there needs to be any additional work done to the collection system prior to the development of a new waste water treatment plant. The Town intends to work apply for an additional loan/grant package to fund the construction of the waste water treatment plant. Director Sherman shared with local officials how the USDA can help fund many aspects of community and economic

development. The USDA offers a variety of loans to help fund business development including hotels, equipment for manufacturers, land for construction and many more opportunities. Many municipalities and government agencies use the USDA Community Facilities grants to fund community facilities such as the

multi-generational center that the town is planning to develop. Individuals may also utilize services from the USDA, including home mortgage programs, home repair programs as well as other agricultural services. Director Sherman was appointed by Continued on page 6

De Marcos Italian Restaurant W

hat do Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Oracle, Globe and Superior, Arizona have in common? Is it the beautiful winter weather? Are each the birth place of freedom and have historic bells? Not quite, but each community is home to a De Marcos Italian Restaurant. The quality, authentic Italian food we enjoy here in Superior, Globe and Oracle was originally served in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The De Marcos location in Superior is open

seven days a week, Monday-Friday 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday 11 a.m.-9 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. They have recently added a few new menu items including pasta dishes, sandwiches, hot wings and pizzas. They also now offer daily specials which can range from specialty entrees to pizza meals. DeMarcos also can do large order pick up catering. They are not able to deliver the food but the can create custom orders for for your large party needs. How did you find Superior/Copper Corridor? In an interview with Eric Barrientos, he explained that his Aunt and her husband had moved to Arizona and decided to open an Italian restaurant in Oracle, Arizona. After a few years Eric’s dad Evodio saw potential and he invested in the business and they opened a store in Globe and just about 18 months ago they opened

the store in Superior. Eric explained that his dad is always scoping out areas and looking for new opportunities. When they saw that the old Dairy Queen building on

US 60 had been empty for a while they decided to expand their operations. One might think that the family is using Continued on page 7

Volunteers remove trash from Tonto National Forest About 40 volunteers from Superior and throughout the state spent their Saturday morning helping to remove trash from the Tonto National Forest, between Superior and Picketpost Mountain. The clean up filled two 40-cubic-yard dumpsters with everything from furniture, shingles, tires, glass, green waste, drink cans and everyday trash. They also picked up 11 tires. Crews used heavy equipment to load the trash and transport it to the dumpsters.

Dumping in the desert is illegal and is a punishable offense. The clean up was coordinated by statewide non-profit Natural Restorations. The group works throughout the state to combat illegal dumping in the forest. Natural Restorations was founded in 2015 by Nicole and Justin Corey. They are based in Gilbert and their goal is to remove trash, graffiti and anything foreign to the environment. At the same time, the group enriches the lives of veterans and other

community members. Since its inception, the group has removed more than 229 tons of trash and removed several panels of graffiti painted on rock faces. Companies assisting with Saturday’s clean up include: CopperPoint Insurance Companies, Sue Schaffer and Footprints Matter to Us, Garland Signs & Specialties, ICON Vehicle Dynamics, Insane Audio, Tom Hawk and everyone from Imerys Perlite USA, Inc., Judd & Roxey Bowers and J. Bowers & Associates, Knuckle-

Busters, LeBaron & Carroll LLC, OdySea Aquarium Foundation, Salt River Project, Southwest Airlines at PHX, the Town of Superior, including Mayor Mila BesichLira and Town Manager Todd Pryor, and the U.S. Forest Service-Tonto National Forest - Globe Ranger District, including Mark Sando, Sheryl Cormack, and everyone else from the Globe Ranger District. Thank you all for helping keep our Arizona desert clean!

Top-ranked Ray defeats No. 2 Superior, 12 – 3 By Andrew Luberda Copper Area News

In the first matchup between the two teams that played for last year’s 1A State Championship, No. 1-ranked Ray defeated No. 2 Superior last Tuesday, 12 – 3. The most recent result was nearly as close as the narrow 1 – 0 Lady Cats’ victory in last year’s title game, in which both teams entered with the same spot in the rankings as last week’s contest. The Lady Cats’ offense pounded out eight extra-base hits, including six doubles and a pair of home runs, against the Lady Panthers, who did not throw their ace, Kiki Arriola, in the game. The defending champions started fast and finished strong, scoring four runs in the first and eight more in the final three innings, including a five-run seventh inning. Senior Ema Alverado and Julie Meza, a junior, each homered for Ray and combined for three RBI. Leadoff

hitter Janae Ruiz, who went 4-for-4, hit one of the six doubles. Danni Montano, Tara Lorona and Chelsea Boyd-Flores accounted for three more. Lorona and Boyd-Flores each drove in a game-high three runs. Senior Daniella Hinojos went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles. Hinojos, who has allowed only five runs – three earned – in her last eight starts, was not as sharp as she has been, as evidenced by the seven walks allowed and two earned runs. Still, she was impressive, slowing down Superior’s high-octane offense that entered the game having scored 11 runs or more in its last six victories, including a 25-run outburst versus San Carlos Mar. 12. Superior was held to six hits, all singles. Tori Juarez went 2-for-2 with two hits and a pair of walks. Korrina Romero, Yuvithzia Romer and Arriola each had an RBI in the loss. The teams will meet again in Kearny on Apr. 20 before another likely matchup in the state playoffs in May. Ray up next: Apr. 12 at Hayden and Apr. 13 at San

Continued from page 3 President Donald Trump in December of 2017. Sherman has worked with the Departments of Energy and Commerce in addition to private sector experience from the Executive Protection, Director of Sales Operations for a division of Schneider Electric and Business Development with other companies. As State Director, Sherman will use his leadership experience to oversee Rural Development programs in a customer-focused manner to restore prosperity to rural Arizona. Director Sherman is looking forward to visiting every county in the State and learning more about what is needed in each area. “I am most looking forward to helping people and communities, I want to help remove barriers and obstacles from the process,” he explained. He is also excited to be working in his home state – prior to his appointment he was working in Washington D.C., he is happy to be home with his family here in Arizona. The current focus of USDA funding from the administration is Opioid Abuse prevention and expansion of broadband internet services in rural America. “We are very honored to have had a visit from Director Sherman, the visit provided us an opportunity to showcase our needs and show that we are serious about accomplishing our goals,” said Mayor Mila Besich-Lira. “This visit was a wonderful opportunity to further strengthen our relationships both within our community and with other agencies. I am looking forward to seeing some of these USDA resources come our way,” said Sue Anderson, President of the Superior Chamber of Commerce and Rebuild Superior.

Superior comeback falls short against Ray By Andrew Luberda Copper Area News

The No. 2-ranked Ray baseball team wants to end its season the same way defending champion Superior ended last year. The Bearcats showed they are a contender for the Panthers’ crown, holding off a late Superior comeback in a 6 – 5 victory last Tuesday. The seventh-ranked Panthers trailed 6 – 2 before plating three runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Ray junior Jaden Pace had two of the Cats’ seven hits in the game, going 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI. The teams combined to reach base 15 times via a walk. The Cats used four pitchers who combined to fan 13 Superior hitters. Freshman Derek Figueroa whiffed six, starter Richard Valenzuela fanned five in an inning and a 1/3. Superior junior Kale Major went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI. He accounted for two of the Panthers’ four hits. Steven Ybarra, another junior, also

doubled and had two RBI. Ybarra, who started on the bump, took the loss, allowing five runs – two earned – on three hits with six strikeouts and four walks. Major, who appeared in relief, allowed a run on three hits with three strikeouts and four walks. Ray up next: Apr. 12 at Hayden and Apr. 13 at San Manuel. Both games are scheduled for 4 p.m. Superior up next: Apr. 12 at Ft. Thomas, Apr. 13 vs. San Tan Foothills, and Apr. 17 vs. Hayden. All games are scheduled for 4 p.m.

old, family recipes, to prepare each menu item. The family actually celebrates the hispanic culture with their roots coming from Mexico and El Salvador. Eric’s uncle was originally a trained Italian chef and Evodio was a trained Greek chef. Their culinary expertise helped them grow their chain of family owned Italian restaurants. Eric and his dad moved to Arizona from Illinois and they have been operating the Globe store for seventeen years. Eric has

been assisting him for the past eight years. Multiple Locations: Eric stressed the importance of maintaining quality products and services at all their locations. The locals want a variety of food, he explained and they they also want personal and friendly service. The menus each offer some local variety, for example Superior has hamburgers and fries on the menu, Globe has soup but each restaurant offers the same delicious homemade bread

for their entrees and sandwiches. Advice for fellow entrepreneur and budding business owners: Eric said that it takes time to grow a brand. “It is important to let the public get to know you, customers want a personal experience and want to be served by a staff that cares,” he said. He stressed the need to be committed to your business, “no one will care for your business more than you do” he said.
