OBITUARIES Alfredo Aragon Barraza Alfredo “Scotty” Aragon Barraza, 83, passed on due to natural causes on April 2, 2018 in San Manuel. Alfredo served in the United States Army from Aug. 3, 1955 to May 20, 1957. He was employed at Kennecott Copper Corporation in Hurley, NM and Magma Copper Company in San Manuel. He enjoyed time with his friends in San Manuel. Alfredo is preceded in death by his parents, Margarito and Catalina Barraza; son, Robert Steve “Peewee” Barraza; and his long-time companion, Olivia Rich. He is survived by his brother, Luis Barraza of El Monte,

CA; sister, Gloria (Ernie) Garcia of Phoenix; son, Manuel Fred (Jennifer) of Arenas Valley, NM; daughters, Patricia Barraza of El Paso and Lisa (Matt) Morgan of Santa Ynez, CA; and many grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, nieces and nephews. Services will be held at Fort Bayard National Cemetery, 200 Camino De Paz in Fort Bayard, N.M., on Friday, April 27 at 2 p.m. Burial will take place at Fort Bayard National Cemetery.

Mary Lynn Nebeker Mary Lynn Nebeker, 72, of Kearny passed away after a short illness on April 14, 2018. Her husband and three sons were by her side in Mountain Vista Hospital in Mesa. She was born to the late William and Mary (Forndran) Malo on April 20, 1945 in Rock Springs, Wyoming. She grew up in Rock Springs, attending the Rock Spring Catholic Elementary School, and graduating from Rock Springs High School in 1963. She attended the University of Wyoming, where she met Neil, the Love of her Life. On June 4, 1966, the couple were married at the brand new Sweetwater County Courthouse in Green River, and spent their one day honeymoon in Rawlins, Wyoming. In June 1967, at eight months pregnant with her first son, she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Education, and traveled across the country to Maryland. In 1970, after a short period in Maryland and Utah, Mary Lynn and Neil moved to Kearny with two boys in tow.

In Kearny, Mary Lynn raised three sons, taught school, and was a piano teacher many years. In recent years, Mary Lynn also taught elementary and primary students in Hayden and Mammoth. She enjoyed playing piano, crocheting, doing needlepoint, square dancing, cooking, and playing with her grandchildren. Most of all, she enjoyed living life with her husband of nearly 52 years, Neil. She was a dedicated parishioner at Infant Jesus of Prague Catholic Church in Kearny. Mary Lynn is survived by her husband Neil, their three sons and daughters in law, Brent (Amy), Bill (Elizabeth), and Jay (Christy), and their six grandchildren, Sydney, Jordan, Austin, Ashton, Greyson, and Weston. Viewing will be at the Infant Jesus of Prague Catholic Church at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 19, followed by the Rosary at 9:30 a.m., and Mass at 10 a.m. Graveside services will follow at the Kearny Cemetery with a luncheon gathering at the Kearny LDS Church. Please join us to celebrate Mary Lynn’s life.

#RedforEd movement comes to Oracle, San Manuel: this is what democracy looks like By John Hernandez San Manuel Miner

Chanting slogans including “overworked – underpaid”, “Red for Ed.” “something has got to change”, and “This is what Democracy looks like”, Mountain Vista teachers, staff, parents, students, children and supporters held a short rally and then marched to Mt. Vista School as a show of support for teachers in Arizona. Many of them were wearing red and carrying protest signs. The #RedforEd movement is asking for better pay for teachers and more money for education. The rally and Walk-In began across the street from the General Dollar store at the Mt. Vista School bus depot off of American Avenue. This is off of American Avenue near the entrance to Oracle. Many cars went by and honked and waved to show support. Superintendent Dennis Blauser was seen observing the rally and walk-in and when asked about the movement, he said, “I support the teachers 100 percent.”

Teachers spoke to a good crowd of supporters about their concerns and demands. The demands include: a 20 percent salary increase, competitive pay, restore funding to 2008 levels, and no new tax cuts until per pupil funding reaches national average. Mammoth-San Manuel teachers also staged a walk-in Wednesday. They met at the marquis in front of the district office, all sporting red shirts. They’ve asked parents and community members to show their support for the movement by wearing red on Wednesdays for the next month. The state-wide walk-ins and the #RedforEd movement has caught the attention of Governor Ducey who appears to now be making some concessions in this election year. Whether this is just posturing or he intends to do something to improve the education situation in Arizona remains to be seen. It is clear that education will be a talking point in the upcoming elections and the #RedforEd movement will play a part in them.

Celebrate Week of the Young Child™ April 19 at the San Manuel Library

(SAN MANUEL) Parents and caregivers of young children ages birth to 5 are invited to bring their young children to a celebrate the Week of the Young Child™ at one of four events scheduled in Pinal County. The free events are being hosted by the Pinal County Early Childhood Coalition (PECC). The Week of the Young Child™ events, which are supported by First Things First, are being held in: San Manuel: Thursday, April 19, San Manuel Library, 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. There will be free dental and sensory screenings, fun activities, raffle prizes, music and refreshments. Children will make their way through event tables and build, create, and play. Play stations will actively engage children and help parents understand the role of play in healthy early childhood development. Week of the Young Child™ is an annual celebration sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the world’s largest early childhood education association. The celebration, which is April 16-20, is designed to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families and to

recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs. Today we know more than ever before about the importance of children’s earliest years in shaping their learning and development. About 90 percent of a child’s brain develops before age 5. The Pinal County Early Childhood Coalition (PECC), comprised of local agencies who work with young children and their families, is sponsoring the events and will provide parents and caregivers information about development and health programs available in the area that help children prepare for kindergarten and beyond. The events are also supported by First Things First, a voter-created, statewide organization that funds early education and health programs to help kids be successful once they enter kindergarten. Arizona prepares for worsening wildfire seasons

A record-breaking fire season in 2017, with massive fires across California, Montana, Idaho, Oregon and British Columbia, is likely only the beginning of a trend of worsening wildfire seasons in western North America, according to a

recent study published by a team of university researchers in the journal PLOS ONE in December. According to the study, parts of Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Nevada are likely to see increases of five or more times the current levels of area burned each year by 2038. Other areas studied ranged from greater than two times area burned and small increases, to even small decreases in some parts of the Arctic. “It’s a wake-up call to be ready,” said Don Falk, an associate professor in the University of Arizona’s School of Natural Resources and the Environment and an author of the study. “The fire phenomenon is not going to go away, it’s going to get bigger.” The researchers compared 34 years of data on seasonal temperature, rainfall and snowpack with acreage burned each year in western North America to understand how climate affected the area burned in the past. They then built a statistical model using future climate projections to predict how area burned each year is likely to change between now and 2038. “The first premise we took is that we’re not going to get a single equation that answers the seasonal response to fire,” Falk said. To account for this, the researchers divided the study area into 1,500 grid cells and studied each area separately. “If you look at the projections, we see some areas that are very different.” The huge variation in different areas is a result of the

length and severity of the fire season and the availability and flammability of fuels. These are both affected by many Continued on page 15

The Lobos, who are No. 7 in the 1A rankings, pounded out 10 hits, including two each by Mychal Mariscal, Vincente Gallego and Mario Mariscal. Three of the Lobos’ 10 hits were extra-base hits – a triple by Gallego and doubles by Mario Mariscal and Robert Bohrn. The 33rd Annual Oracle Oaks Festival will be held on Saturday, April 21, 2018. This year’s Grand Marshal is John Harris. John is known for his sense of humor and for helping others in town. John was born in Illinois and is 87 years old. He bragged that he rode his motorcycle until he was 83. John spent four years in the Navy serving in the Aleutian Islands and Korea and is a Veteran of the Korean War. He spent a few years as a policeman in Missouri before becoming a truck driver and hauling goods across the United States and Canada.

He came to Oracle in 1999 and has lived here since then. When asked how he ended up in Oracle, he jokingly replied, “I really don’t know, I ran out of gas, I think.” John was interviewed at one of his favorite “hangouts” the barber shop. He also likes to hang out at Casa Rivera’s Restaurant. John said he does not know why he was picked as Grand Marshal. “I have the dullest history of anybody in the world,” he said. “I haven’t done anything but harass the natives since I been here.” John is a Mason and volunteers at the Community Center and all his pals at the barbershop says he does a lot for others. Congratulations John!

Annual Oracle Spring Run Ca

The Oracle Historical Society’s annual fundraiser, the Spring Run Car Show, will be held Saturday, April 21, 2018. This is the 32nd year of the event, which takes place during the Oracle Oaks Festival. The Spring Run is open to all cars, motorcycles and trucks, and participants must pre-register or come to the registration area on the morning of the event. Generous businesses and individuals donate funds to cover Spring Run t-shirt printing and other expenses. The car parade runs through Oracle at 9:30 a.m. and ends at the Pinal County Court House Park where trophies are awarded at 2:30 p.m. OHS also sponsors a food booth that is open during the entire event, serving green chile, bean or combo burros, BBQ sandwiches and drinks. All proceeds from the Spring Run and food booth beneﬁt the Oracle Historical Society. The parade and awards ceremony are free to the public, so plan to come see the display of classic, exotic and new vehicles on April 22. The 31st Annual Oracle Spring Run Car Show, which took place during the 2017 Oracle Oaks Festival, followed the ever-popular time-honored formula of a car show, parade, swap meet, craft fair and book sale. The car parade ran through Oracle, starting at 9:30

Mammoth Lifeguard Class Sign Up

A Lifeguard Class for new and recertifying lifeguards will be held at the Mammoth Pool April 14 – May 12, 2018. The final registration day is April 18. This is a blended learning class format which requires 7.5 hours of on-line training (which must be completed prior to April 28) and 20 hours of classroom/ pool training. complex and localized seasonal climate factors, Falk said. Seasonal temperatures and rainfall affect plant growth and moisture levels, which influence how likely it is that an area will burn. More rainfall usually means more plant growth, but also that plants are less dry and therefore less flammable. “There’s kind of a balance between the two,” Falk said. As the climate warms and dries, fire seasons are likely to start earlier and end later. “There are a lot of indications that fire season is getting longer everywhere,” Falk said. Falk noted that more area burned doesn’t necessarily mean more severe wildfires in terms of impacts to humans and ecosystems. Falk and the research team chose not to predict beyond 2038 because researchers aren’t confident they can accurately forecast climate in the latter half of this century. “It’s not just going to be climate alone, but climate times fire times insect outbreaks and other things,” Falk said. “There’s a good chance that a lot of the landscape by the end of the century will look very different. It could be a different biome.” Fire prevention in Arizona: a statewide response Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey announced in February that he will double the amount of money he asks the Arizona State Legislature for fire prevention. It will increase from $1 million to $2 million for fiscal year 2019. “After experiencing an unusually dry winter, we need to commit to giving the Department of Forestry and Fire

Management the tools they need to prevent and battle these catastrophic fires,” Ducey said in a press release. Karl Gehrke, a planning specialist with the department, said that focusing on fire-prevention activities, like tree thinning and prescribed burning, will be key as fire conditions worsen across the state in the coming years and decades. According to Gehrke, spending on fire prevention can save huge sums of money in the long run. Fighting fires is much costlier than preventing them. Gehrke said that the 2017 Goodwin fire in Prescott cost about $20 million to fight, but he thinks it could’ve been avoided with $2 million dollars in prevention work. “We need to be doing that work now regardless of the cost,” Gehrke said. “The cost down the road will be 10 to 20 times more.” Ducey’s request for a doubling of fire prevention funds still needs to be passed by the state legislature. The money, if awarded, wouldn’t come in until the beginning of the next fiscal year in July, which is usually after the worst of Arizona’s fire season. The money would be used for fire prevention in the 2019 fire season. As for the 2018 season, Gehrke says that low precipitation this winter, and winds that prevented some planned prescribed burns are “putting us further behind than we would like to be.” He’s optimistic, though, and thinks that the department will be prepared for this fire season because it has agreements with almost all of the fire departments across

the state. Arizona’s fire season usually comes earlier than in other states, also, meaning that fire crews from other states can be called in to help. “When there’s a fire it’s pretty much all hands on deck,” Gehrke said. Falk said that increases in spring and summer temperatures, and decreases in spring precipitation, are likely to have the biggest impact on annual area burned in Arizona. More fire fighting and prevention, or better land-use planning? Although fire fighting and prevention are important, Falk says that climate change could alter landscapes and increase annual area burned so much that traditional methods of fire prevention and suppression might not cut it. He’d like to see more emphasis on land-use planning that avoids building in areas that are likely to burn. “You could do fuel treatments, you could have suppression activities, that’s all great, but climate could override all of those things,” Falk said. “… At a certain point, there needs to be a serious discussion about where we put these people’s lives and infrastructure in relation to this fairly inevitable occurrence.” Michaela Webb is a reporter for Arizona Sonora News, a service from the School of Journalism with the University of Arizona.
