Dry conditions trigger fire restrictions in Southeastern Arizona Effective Tuesday, May 1, the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management, Bureau of Land Management Gila District, all districts of the Coronado National Forest, Saguaro National Park, Casa Grande Ruins National Monument, Coronado National Memorial, Chiricahua National Monument, Fort Bowie National Historic Site, Tumacácori National Historical Park, Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, and San Bernardino, Leslie Canyon and Buenos Aries National Wildlife Refuges will implement campfire and smoking restrictions in southeastern Arizona. Beginning May 1, and until rescinded, the following are prohibited: • Building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire, campfire, charcoal, coal, or wood stove fire, including within a developed recreation site, or improved site. • Using an explosive. • Smoking, except within an enclosed vehicle or building. (Smoking is prohibited in all federal buildings.) • Operating or using any equipment powered by an internal combustion engine, except motor vehicles. • Welding, or operating acetylene or other torch with open flame. • Discharging a firearm, air rifle or gas gun, except while engaged in a lawful hunt pursuant to state, federal, or tribal law, and regulations. • Possessing or operating motor vehicles off National Forest System roads, including but not limited to cars, trucks, SUVs, motorcycles, and ATVs, except for when parking in an area devoid of vegetation within 10 feet of the roadway, and except for parking overnight in Forest Service developed campground and trailheads. as a Class B misdemeanor, which includes a fine of not more than $5,000 for an individual and up to $10,000 for organizations and possible imprisonment for not more than six (6) months or both. Violators may also be held personally responsible for reimbursement of fire suppression costs. Arizona and New Mexico state laws carry similar penalties. Pressurized liquid or gas stoves, lanterns and heaters possessing shut-off devices are allowed. When using a portable stove, make sure the area is clear of grasses and other fine fuels. Prevent stoves from tipping and starting a fire. Cigarettes should never be thrown out the window of
a vehicle. Instead, ashtrays should be used in order to prevent wildfires. Never park a vehicle over dead grass; the catalytic converter can ignite the vegetation. Fire conditions as well as localized closures and restrictions are subject to change. Because tribal, federal, state, and local mandates are different, they may have some differences in their restriction notices. For a more detailed explanation concerning agency restrictions and fire information in general, please contact the nearest land management agency office where you plan to work or play, visit http://wildlandfire.az.gov or call the toll-free Southwest Fire Restrictions Hotline at 1-877-864-6985.

Local districts to announce today if closure eminent due to #RedForEd teacher walk out; several districts to close for sure Protesting Arizona Governor Doug Ducey’s plan to increase pay for teachers that many believe to be unsustainable, Arizona Educators United (a union for teachers) has voted to stage a walk out beginning Thursday, April 26. Copper Corridor school districts are in support of the #RedForEd walk out, but some haven’t yet announced that they will close. Oracle School District Superintendent Dennis Blauser posted a letter to the district website (www.osd2. org) stating: “At this point we do not know how many Oracle School District employees will participate, nor do we know if we will have adequate staffing to keep the school or any school services open. At this time we do not know what the duration of the walkout will be. It is likely that any school days canceled due to the walkout will have to be made up.
“We ask that you consider an alternative plan for your student(s) in the event that our school is forced to close. “In the event that we are unable to hold school,

we will use all of our modes of communication to alert families to the closures including our parent alert system, emails, phone calls, district and school websites, and social media.” The school announced that as of this time, the 8th grade promotion date will not change. Ray School District in Kearny will not announce until Wednesday whether a closure will be needed. The school board met Tuesday night to make a final decision, but the outcome of that meeting was not known at press time. “The safety and education of your children is our number one priority. In the event the district cannot ensure this priority due to a lack of staff members coming to work, the school district would close its schools. A final decision for possible closure will be made by noon Wednesday, April 25, 2018. We ask that you consider an alternative plan for your children in the event of closure,” Ray Superintendent Curt Cook told parents on the district website (www.rayusd.org). The Superior School Board voted Monday night in a special meeting to move to half-days starting Thursday so that classified staff doesn’t lose pay and so parents don’t have to find child care for a full day. Hayden-Winkelman School District will be closed, confirmed Superintendent Jeff Gregorich in a phone call with Copper Area News. Likewise, Mammoth-San Manuel Schools will also be closed starting Thursday. In a letter sent home with students and posted to the district website and Facebook, Superintendent Julie Dale-Scott said, “While the last thing we want to do is close our schools, we cannot appropriately supervise or instruct students and ensure student safety; therefore, all 3 Mammoth-San Manuel schools will be closed Thursday, April 26. At this time, we do not know how long schools will be closed. If a change at the state or local level indicates that we are able to re-open our schools, we will inform you immediately via our REMIND service, Facebook and our website. (www. msmusd.org)” In addition to closing for the school day, all junior and senior high school athletic practices and competitions will be cancelled as will all field trips scheduled for April 26. All school districts have emphasized that for each day that school is closed, a make up day at the end of the school year calendar will be scheduled.

Celebrating Earth Day at Oracle State Park By John Hernandez San Manuel Miner Sunday April 22, 2018 was Earth Day. Earth Day is an annual event where events are held to demonstrate support for the protection of the environment. It was first celebrated in 1970. Many organizations have been formed since
then to help protect the environment and educate people about how they can get involved and help. Everyone can contribute to making this a better world to live in. One of this year’s environmental issues that is being brought up on Earth Day is the challenge to end plastics pollution. Plastic pollution is poisoning our oceans
and land, injuring marine animals and affecting our health. One little thing we can do to reduce plastic pollution is to stop buying and drinking out of plastic bottles, especially water bottles. Educate yourself about plastic pollution and pledge to reduce your use of plastic products. To learn more about plastic pollution and other environmental
issues visit the website: www.earthday. org. On Sunday, Oracle State Park and Center for Environmental Education celebrated Earth Day with Music in the Park. The Cardells performed, providing classic rock and roll music from Elvis to the Rolling Stones as well as some of their own compositions.
The Cardells performed Sunday at the Oracle State Park in celebration of Earth Day. Folks enjoyed listening and dancing to the tunes.

The San Manuel varsity baseball team hosted its second minicamp for local little league players on Thursday, Apr. 19. The Miners welcomed nearly 50 kids, ages 4-12. The younger players participated in hitting and
fielding drills under the tutelage of the Miners’ players. Four lucky participating youngsters won T-shirts from a drawing held at the conclusion of the camp. “The kids had a great time interacting and learning from the varsity players,” San Manuel head coach Freddy Burnham told the Miner.
