Vultures, Casinos and Brush Fires

he turkey vultures have begun their move back to live with us. The poppies didn’t “pop” much this year, but the brittlebush plants have given us a spectacular display. The mornings are cool and the afternoons are great. The Apache Sky Casino is now open. The San Carlos tribe pushed hard to make this early opening, and they deserve our thanks. The casino is already providing jobs and other economic advantages to the whole Copper Basin. They are looking for good support from the north Tucson area, but I suspect that more than a few people from the East Valley will trek this way to enjoy the beauty. It is good that more than a few people from Hayden, Kearny, Winkelman and Dudleyville are employed at the casino now, Have you noticed the number of hikers in Kearny? The number of people on the Arizona Trail has really grown. Many of them make their way into Kearny for rest and a good shower, and a good meal. Some of them have also worshiped in Kearny’s churches. Several people, including our own Gerry Kaufhold, have been helping them make their eight miles into town from the Kelvin Bridge and to assist them to get on their way again. Wouldn’t it be great to have an organized way to plan for their arrival, given them a lift in and back again, and make friends for Kearny on the way? I don’t think many of us yet realize what a great economic benefit the hikers are.

Work has begun on new bridge on Florence-Kelvin Hwy. Jake Jacobson’s “Bridge of Unity” built in 1916 to become part of Arizona Trail The Arizona Department of Transportation began work last week to install a new bridge next to a century-old bridge spanning the Gila

River in Pinal County. Work to install the new bridge upstream from the existing narrow, one-lane bridge on

the Florence-Kelvin Highway will begin with construction of detours to maintain access to the existing bridge. This will allow ADOT

to construct the new bridge parallel to the existing structure. The older bridge, constructed in 1916, will remain in place and will be open for use by pedestrians and bicyclists as a link in the Arizona Trail. “I’m pleased to see this project beginning,” stated Pinal County Board of Supervisors Vice-Chairman Pete Rios. “We’ve been waiting a long time to see this become a reality.” The project will begin with approximately two weeks of clearing vegetation and earthwork, followed by the start of construction of the temporary bridge to provide construction access in mid-April. The Florence-Kelvin Highway connects eastern Pinal County with the central part of the county. The new bridge, which will feature two 12foot travel lanes and four-foot shoulders, is scheduled to open in late 2017 or early 2018. Drivers should proceed through the work zone with caution, slow down and watch for construction personnel and equipment. ADOT works to inform the public about planned highway restrictions and closures, but it’s possible that unscheduled impacts might occur because of weather or other factors. For the most current information about highway conditions statewide, visit ADOT’s Traveler Information site at www.az511.gov, follow ADOT on Twitter (@ArizonaDOT) or call 511, except while driving. For more information about this project, please visit www.azdot.gov/statewide or contact the Project Hotline at 1.855.712.8530, or email at Projects@azdot.gov.

by the Tribal Council on Thursday March 31 along with a flag raising which involved veterans from San Carlos. The ceremony was to showcase everyone who contributed to the creation of the Apache Sky Casino. Tribal dignitaries, local mayors and County Supervisors, San Carlos Apache Enterprise Gaming and Apache Gold management team attended. There was a blessing and dance performance by the Apache Gaan dancers. Tribal Chairman Terry Rambler spoke about the cooperation that was needed and given by

everyone. The new casino has over 300 slot machines, black jack and three card poker games. There is a bar and a gourmet food truck. The nationally recognized food truck is operated by the Whiskey Ranch Grill. They have appeared on the Food Network show, Chopped and on the Travel Channel programs, BBQ Pitmasters and BBQ Crawl. Tommy Duncan, Jr. is the owner. He and his wife Jennifer are the chefs/pit masters. They are the first husband and wife team to compete against each other on Chopped. They compete against each other and other professionals on the national barbecue circuit. Whiskey Ranch is based in Gilbert, Arizona. CEO Matt Olin says in the future the casino will bring in other food trucks, up to four at a time with different types of cuisine. The opening of the casino is a boost to the economy in the area. It has brought jobs and it is believed that it will eventually bring other businesses and growth to this side of Pinal County.

On Monday, March 27, the HaydenWinkelman School District and the University of Arizona began a five-year environmental health education and water harvesting research grant funded by the National Science Foundation. Fifteen environmental science students and staff from the U of A provided an array of hands-on science activities for all K-12 students. The event culminated by U of A researcher Mónica Ramírez-Andreotta conducting the “phases of matter” experiment and making ice cream using liquid nitrogen. The goal of “Project Harvest Grant” is to promote citizen-science in underrepresented communities that will be impacted by climate change. The research will provide resources such as science and environmental health education and water harvesting training. The grant will create a community-engagement partnership to spark student’s interest in environmental STEM learning. Associate Professor Ramírez-Andreotta said, “The University of Arizona will provide many research opportunities and activities over the next five years for both the students and community. Our first visit was focused on getting the students excited about working with us and begin building a positive partnership. We want to encourage students to become engaged in scientific research that positively impacts our state and communities.” Superintendent Jeff Gregorich said, “I am very excited about this opportunity for our school district and students to work with the University of Arizona on this important research. It will provide our student hands-

on, real science research to motivate them to consider careers in science. It is no secret that these are the skills they will need to be successful in the 21st century.” The next event is the U of A Science Night which is scheduled for April 26th, in the evening to include parents and the community. Science night will include hands-on environmental STEM activities. Participants will learn about Project Harvest, current and future efforts at the school, and ways to get involved in the five-year citizen science project. Future plans for Project Harvest at HaydenWinkelman School District includes building and sustaining a garden and rainwater harvesting system to promote citizen-science and environmental health education among this community. A major outcome of this project is the environmental health citizen science program that will be initiated and sustained throughout the selected underserved communities in Arizona and dissemination of research findings. Together with the community, we will co-generate a dataset that will not only inform guidelines and recommendations for safe, harvested rainwater use on gardens, it will support communities to safely and sustainably produce their own foods. For more information on how you can participate is this research, please contact Mónica Ramírez-Andreotta, Assistant Professor, Department of Soil, Water and Environmental Science at 520-621-009 or mdramire@email.arizona.edu.
