Eighth grade promotion is Thursday, May 25 at 6 p.m., and the class of 2017 will be graduated on the school field on Friday, May 26. This is also when all the town swimming pools come into play. The Town of Mammoth’s pool will open first, on Sunday, May 21. Kearny’s pool is set to open on Monday, May 29 (Memorial Day) for swimming from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The Kearny pool will be open all days but Sundays. ASARCO made a very welcome $8,000 gift for pool operations. The Town of Hayden was aiming for a Memorial Day pool opening, but problems with the water pump may cause a delay for as much as a week. Call Hayden’s town hall for information about the schedule. In Kearny, Lieutenant Garric Berry of the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office is serving as interim Chief of Police. The PCSO is also providing some officers to help provide 24hour coverage. Joseph Turrito will become Chief of Police after background checks and the formal contract are completed. For Hayden, Winkelman, and Mammoth, Tamatha Villar continues as interim Chief of Police until assuming full office on Thursday, June 1. The mayors of most of the towns of the Copper Basin and southern Gila County met together earlier in May for a discussion on blight and redevelopment. All the towns have blight issues, though each town has a distinct pattern. Defunct vehicles are a concern for all. The Town of Kearny has a list of organizations which will gladly accept vehicles and tow them away. Best of all, vehicle donation to a non-profit is tax deductible. Both running and non-running cars and trucks can be donated, your driveway will be clear, and your taxes will be less of a burden. There are many opportunities for our children this summer, including ASARCO’s basketball camps in Kearny on June 5-6 and in Hayden on June 12-13. The ball fields
will be busy with Little League athletes, and the College for Kids will take place at Central Arizona College in Aravaipa. There will be other events, too. All these events are possible only through the work of caring volunteers. Now, here’s a fun (and educational) event. The students in the Ray Schools have been studying buoyancy and structural engineering. On Tuesday, May 23 , the students will test out their work by launching boats which they have made – out of cardboard! The Kearny Town Pool is the test site from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., and viewers are welcome. Yes, the students will ride in their boats… unless something happens, of course. Good fun, good learning, and a great gift to our kids. Hint: Most of the action will begin about 10 a.m.

Bearcats eliminated by narrow loss in state playoffs By Andrew Luberda Copper Basin News The No. 4-seed Ray baseball entered Friday night’s semifinal playoff game in Goodyear versus top-seed and rival Superior knowing it had lost both previous meeting between the teams by a combined score of 35 – 9. The Cats made the third game between the teams a lot closer than most thought, taking the lead twice before the Panthers scored a lone run in the fifth to take a 7 – 6 lead they would not relinquish. It was a disappointing ending to what was an otherwise spectacular season by the Cats. “It definitely was,” Ray head coach Frank Lechuga told the Copper Basin

News. “We knew what we had to do to get the job done. We changed some of our work habits and the boys dedicated some extra time to it.” “It was a good game all around,” he continued. “Superior came out on top and deserved to win.” Perhaps one surprising change was Lechuga tabbing senior Brett Fackiner to take the ball against the Panthers rather than ace Noah Warren, who the led the Cats with 9 wins this season. Fackiner’s first-round performance against Rock Point – he fanned five of the six batters he faced – and the fact that he hadn’t previously started versus the Panthers were the reasons Lechuga gave for his decision. “I decided to try to give them a little bit of twist with Mr. Fackiner,”
Lechuga said. “He did one heck of a job. He was hitting his spots. A couple of calls could’ve gone either way and it could’ve been a whole different ball game.” Ray took a 1 – 0 lead in the second before Superior’s Edgar Galindo homered in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game. The Panthers added three runs in the third before the Cats’ offense came alive, scoring five runs in the fourth to grab a 6 – 4 lead. Anthony Lopez and Fackiner each had two hits in the game, including a double by Fackiner, who also had an RBI. Senior Jordan pace went 1-for3 with a pair of RBI. Jaden Pace, Anthony Acuna, Fabian Valenzuela, and Charlie Romero, who doubled, each had hits in the loss. Bray, Lopez
and Valenzuela had an RBI apiece. Superior tied it with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth before plating the difference maker in the fifth. “I think we did a good job,” Lechuga said. “I think the main thing is we stayed focus, which was a part of the problem in the first two games; when things didn’t go our way we lost focus.” “But the boys really grew from those two games and were able to get done what they needed to. Unfortunately we just came up one run short.”

Sunday Tree Tour May 21 with Certified Arborist Jeff Payne Ever wanted to learn the difference between mesquites and acacias - to distinguish Arizona’s native Palo Verdes? An Arboretum by definition is a place for trees – you haven’t truly experienced all that Boyce Thompson Arboretum has to offer until you’ve attended the once-a-month walking tour guided by Certified Arborist Jeff Payne narrating Trees of BTA. Jeff’s tour is offered Sunday, May 21, begins from the visitor center breezeway lobby at 8 a.m., and is included with $12.50 daily admission – or free, if you’re already among annual members at BTA. Jeff leads his group past trees both native to the Sonoran Desert and exotic, sharing insider’s tips on tree care and horticulture. The News caught up with Jeff for a sneak preview ahead of his tour; an excerpt is below: Q: What’s the most common misconception you hear about desert trees? A: “First, roots do not seek out water. Trees are smart, but they do not consciously seek out water. Roots only grow in the soil where there’s adequate soil moisture, oxygen (yes, roots need

air to live and there is oxygen in the upper soil zones) and available nutrients. This brings us to the second biggest misconception: rooting depth. Since roots only grow in soil where there is adequate soil moisture, oxygen and available nutrients, roots are mainly located in the top six-to-36-inches of soil. Some trees do have tap roots that extend down past this level, but they basically only offer anchorage for the tree. Almost all our native legumes here in the desert southwest only have a rooting depth to a few feet. Makes sense considering the total amount of precipitation we receive here annually.” Q: Name a few favorite trees here at BTA? A: (he grins) “My favorite trees are the ones that take care of themselves and don’t need extra work or maintenance! Unfortunately, those are few and far between here at the arboretum. If I had to choose a few favorites, they would include: Cedrus deodara, Condalia globosa, Pinus eldarica and Quercus buckleyi. Just two of those are on the monthly tree tour but be here Sunday for the tour and we’ll see them and I’ll share their common names, explain why they are my favorites.”
