Shirley A. Allen Shirley A. Allen of Oracle, AZ passed away peacefully at the age of 88 on May 1, 2017 with her loving husband and children by her side. Shirley was born Dec. 6, 1928 in Hardwick, Vermont to Clayton and Mary Margaret (Durkin) Gray. She is survived by her husband James S. Allen Jr., daughters Lynn and Cynthia, sons James and Clayton, grandchildren Harley, Courtney, Nicolle, and Clayton Daniel; her siblings Winnifred La Vigne and John Gray of Tucson. She is preceded in death by her son John, her parents, and siblings Forrest, Roy, and Joan of Hardwick, Vermont. Shirley grew up in Hardwick, Vermont and Plymouth, Connecticut. She had a love of sports and played on her high school basketball team. While attending nursing school in Burlington, Vermont she met and married James on Jan. 19, 1952. She set aside a career in nursing and became and military wife and raised her children in
Vermont, California, Hawaii, and New Jersey while James served in the U.S. Air Force for 24 years. Afterwards, the Allen’s settled in No. Hollywood, California. Here she resumed her passion for nursing working as nursing assistant in a convalescence hospital until retirement. Upon retiring Shirley and James moved to Oracle in February 1992. Here they spent the following years building their home. Shirley enjoyed attending St. Helen’s Catholic Church in Oracle, collecting rocks and shells, making crafts, and working on word puzzles. Of course, you could always catch her watching sports, especially basketball and hockey. Shirley was as gently spirit and touched many with her kindness and generosity. She was a devoted, patient, sweet wife and the most loving, caring, and forgiving mother. Shirley’s family extends their sincere appreciation to all those friends for their love and support; and to the excellence in caring of Casa de la Luz Hospice. She was dearly loved and will be missed by all. A private family service was held on May 5, 2017.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR An Open Letter to the Mammoth San Manuel Unified School District There is a quote most often attributed to Ralph Waldo Emerson, “enjoy the journey not the destination”. For the past 16 years, I have had the privilege of working for the students, parents, staff and community of the Mammoth San Manuel Unified School District. On June 13, 2017, I will be retiring and this part of my journey is ending. First, foremost and most importantly, I need to thank the thousands of students I have known since 2001. As your Principal, Principal/Superintendent and for the past two years as Superintendent, I have been lucky enough to have received the love and respect from the nicest students in the world. Your hugs, handshakes, high fives, smiles, laughter and kind words have made this journey the best journey I could have imagined. Your accomplishments, while you were at school and most importantly post graduation, make me proud. No matter what, each day I could count on one (or more) of you making me smile or laugh. What makes a school is the kids and I was blessed to have known each one of you. To the many parents I have known all these years. (Some of my students have become the parents!) I thank you for sending me the best kids in the world. I appreciate the fact that you understood that it was just as important to instill life lessons into our children as it was academic lessons. Although, we may not have agreed all of the time, the respect that the parents gave me was an important part of the success we all achieved. Thank you for believing in me. Whether I was right or wrong, I always felt your support. I cannot even begin to describe the dedicated staff. This community has been blessed to have the most dependable, amazing group of dedicated people who share the mission of taking care of the children. They understood the need to exceed was not just meant for teachers but for all. Dedication is an important factor in any organization and our district oozes with this trait. Dedication is in 16 years I have only worked for 3 Board presidents and I have served a Governing Board who unselfishly volunteer their time to focus on education. Special thanks to Board Presidents, Bill Romero, Mark Phelps and Terry Newman, your dedication has guided me as a leader . Thank you to all who have served on the board. Dedication is having only 3 Assistant
Principals in my tenure as principal, thank you, Tim Connelly, Alfred Trejo and Julie Dale Scott. Your dedication kept things running and helped me be better as a principal. Dedication is having a core group of secretaries who stay with you, know your moods and get things done before you ask, thank you Barb Jensen, Yolanda Gonzalez and Mandy Renteria. Your dedication helped me get the job done. Dedication is having a core group of teachers, aides and counselors who understood that good was not good enough and that great is what you can be! Thank you all teachers who are too many to be named and I would not want to do so in fear that I would leave one name out of t he list. Your dedication, knowledge, resourcefulness and love of children is unmatched. Your dedication made me proud to be your leader! Dedication is having principals who share the same common goal. Thank you, Julie Dale Scott, Melissa Joliat and Katy Wilkins. Your dedication helps both the staff and children succeed. Dedication is having the same administrative team that understood a request was actually a demand and that your staff were just as important to the education of our youth. Thank you, David Hogan and the maintenance transportation staff, Mary Adams in finance, Mark Wiseley in special education, Joanna Diaz and the food services staff, Cindy Renteria and the custodial staff, Lisa Armenta and the community schools staff, and thank you to the wonderful staff at district office, Martha, Sylvia, Frances, Rosemary and Judy. Your dedication makes the rest of our jobs easier. Dedication is having community support. From the businesses who give to the schools and to our Foundation who volunteers to find ways to assist our schools, thank you. Your dedication helps us have the extra things we need to make this a great experience for the children. Thank you to my family, my son, Isaac [Class of 2013] and my wife Carmen, who understood and put up with the many hours, days and weekends away from home. Love you guys!! The Mammoth San Manuel Unified District is a special place. I have been able to observe First Avenue Elementary achieve an A+ rating and Title One Distinguished School, the Mammoth STEM
has many times dominated the awards at the Southern AZ Science Fairs, your Junior Senior High was the first Junior/ Senior High in Arizona to receive an A+ designation and 3 times was named on the US News and World Report list as one of the Best High Schools in America. Accomplishments such as this are earned and community driven! Thank you for letting me share in your success.
Sixteen years ago, I was welcomed into this family with open arms and hearts. Change is at the core of life and it has become time for a change. As I leave, I want you to know that my heart is full of your love and great memories and although I am unsure of the destination I have truly enjoyed this journey with all of you. Yours in the service of our youth, /s/ John J. Ryan

Mammoth-San Manuel Superintendent retires By John Hernandez San Manuel Miner
After 35 years of working in the education field, John Ryan, Superintendent of Mammoth - San Manuel School District #8, is retiring. John started out teaching in upstate New York before moving to Arizona. He attended the University of Arizona
SUN LIFE FAMILY HEALTH CENTER
and taught there while getting his Masters degree. He then taught for eight years at Catalina Mountain School and in the Amphitheater School District before coming to San Manuel. He spent 16 years at San Manuel where he was Principal for eight years, Superintendent/Principal for four years and Superintendent the last two years. After working long hours at the school, he will now enjoy spending more time at home. He and his wife, Carmen, will be doing some traveling including a trip to Europe where they will visit with their son, Isaac, who is stationed with the military in Belgium. Long term plans include a trip to Saratoga, New York to see the historic race track. He grew up near Saratoga but never saw the race track. He has always wanted to do a baseball trip and hopes to visit as many Major League ball parks as he can while traveling around the country. John says he also plans on working in some manner, advocating for public education. He will also keep in touch with the staff at San Manuel. John will continue to be involved with the annual fund raising golf tournament for the Education Foundation which he has organized for the past nine years. John was asked what he thought was his biggest accomplishment at the school during his time in the district.“That is for other people to judge,” John said. “Hopefully I did a good job. It’s been a team effort over the years and a blessing to be around these great kids and staff.” Congratulations John! Enjoy your retirement and thank you for your dedication to education.

Injury to Tucson woman by javelina prompts AZGFD warning TUCSON, Ariz. – The Arizona Game and Fish Department is again asking the public to exercise caution after another pet owner in the Tucson area was injured by a javelina while walking a dog. The incident occurred approximately 8:30 p.m. Monday northwest of east Snyder Road and north Sabino Canyon Road, when a woman walking her dog was suddenly charged by a javelina. The woman sustained two, two-inch gashes on her knee from the javelina, was treated for the wounds and possible exposure to rabies at Northwest Hospital, and released. The incident is the second of its kind in less than two months. An Oro Valley woman was bitten on the thigh by a javelina she encountered while walking her dog March 25. She was treated for the wound and possible rabies exposure at Oro Valley Hospital, then released. “We don’t blame the victims, but we do want pet owners to know that if they see javelina while walking they’re dog, they you should go in the opposite direction. Javelina can’t tell the difference between a dog and a coyote, which prey on javelina,
so javelina react instinctively to dogs,” said Regional Supervisor Raul Vega of Game and Fish in Tucson. “The presence of dogs is the second leading cause of injuries to humans by javelina, which are rare but can be serious. The leading cause of such injuries is feeding javelina, which is illegal.” If allowed to interact, dogs and javelina can seriously hurt or kill each other. Defensive javelina behavior may include charging, teeth clacking, or a barking, growling sound. Javelina may also act defensively when cornered, or to protect their young. For tips on living with urban wildlife, visit www.azgfd.gov/urbanwildlife. To report apparent wildlife violations contact Operation Game Thief at 1-800-372-0500, anonymously if need be. The Arizona Game and Fish Department has trust responsibility for managing more than 800 native wildlife species – the most of any inland state – for current and future generations of Arizona citizens. http:// www.azgfd.gov/h_f/northamericanmodel. shtml

Ever wanted to learn the difference between mesquites and acacias - to distinguish Arizona’s native Palo Verdes? An Arboretum by definition is a place for trees – you haven’t truly experienced all that Boyce Thompson Arboretum has to offer until you’ve attended the once-amonth walking tour guided by Certified Arborist Jeff Payne narrating Trees of BTA. Jeff’s tour is offered Sunday, May 21, begins from the visitor center breezeway lobby at 8 a.m., and is included with $12.50 daily admission – or free, if you’re already among annual members at BTA. Jeff leads his group past trees both native to the Sonoran Desert and exotic, sharing insider’s tips on tree care and horticulture. The News caught up with Jeff for a sneak preview ahead of his tour; an excerpt is below: Q: What’s the most common misconception you hear about desert trees? A: “First, roots do not seek out water. Trees are smart, but they do not consciously seek out water. Roots only grow in the soil where there’s adequate soil moisture, oxygen (yes, roots need air to
live and there is oxygen in the upper soil zones) and available nutrients. This brings us to the second biggest misconception: rooting depth. Since roots only grow in soil where there is adequate soil moisture, oxygen and available nutrients, roots are mainly located in the top six-to-36-inches of soil. Some trees do have tap roots that extend down past this level, but they basically only offer anchorage for the tree. Almost all our native legumes here in the desert southwest only have a rooting depth to a few feet. Makes sense considering the total amount of precipitation we receive here annually.” Q: Name a few favorite trees here at BTA? A: (he grins) “My favorite trees are the ones that take care of themselves and don’t need extra work or maintenance! Unfortunately, those are few and far between here at the arboretum. If I had to choose a few favorites, they would include: Cedrus deodara, Condalia globosa, Pinus eldarica and Quercus buckleyi. Just two of those are on the monthly tree tour but be here Sunday for the tour and we’ll see them and I’ll share their common names, explain why they are my favorites.”
