OBITUARIES Emetria Rios ‘Ernie’ Munoz Emetria Rios “Emie” Munoz, age 76 of Miami, Arizona passed away on Wednesday, May 15, 2019 at her

residence.

She was born in Hayden on March 3, 1943. She was the daughter of Angela (Duarte) and Santiago Rios. She was a homemaker.

Ernie was preceded in death by her parents, Angela and Santiago Rios; her husband, Joe Ybanez Munoz; her children, Joseph Munoz and Lorraine Marin; her brothers, Manuel Rios, Santiago Rios and Vince Rios; her sisters, Maria Berdugo, Helen Aguirre, Carmen Rios and Jenny Avery.

Emie is survived by her daughters, Lisa Corona and Aurora Carbasco of Miami; her brothers, Joe Rios of Kearny, Tom Rios of Chandler, AZ and Pete Rios of Dudleyville; her sisters, Ruth Aguirre of Tucson and Angie Huerta of Mammoth; nine grandchildren and 10 greatgrandchildren.

Rosary will be on Friday, May 24, 2019 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Hayden. Funeral Mass will follow at 10 a.m. Interment of ashes will be at Mountain View Cemetery in Hayden.

Joe Mora Moreno of Hayden, Arizona, passed away on Saturday, May 11, 2019 in Tucson, Arizona to go home with our Lord, Jesus Christ, at the age of 84 years.

Joe was born in Hayden, Arizona on Sept. 28, 1934.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Manuel P. Moreno and Guadalupe Moreno, and siblings, Manuel Mora Moreno, Sarah Moreno Cooney and Patsy Moreno.

Joe is survived by his loving wife of 45 wonderfully blessed years, Yolanda Cordova Moreno; their 5 children, Lisbee (Robert) Manriquez, Jose Manuel Moreno, Hector Luis (Nannette) Moreno, Jesus Enrique “Kiki” Moreno,

Services were held on Saturday, May 18, 2019 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Hayden, Arizona. He was Laid to rest at Mountain View Cemetery, Hayden, Arizona.

Your memory is my keepsake with which I’ll never part.

God has you in His keeping. Mi Querido Viejo, I will forever have you in my heart.

Teens and Drunk Driving

t’s officially spring and with spring comes warmer weather, singing birds, sunny days, blooming flowers, backyard BBQ’s and parties, parties, parties! While most people enjoy a good party, springtime brings parties that are especially fun for new high school and college graduates.

In most states when someone becomes 18 years of age, they are legally an adult. But ask any teenager and they will tell you that the move that completes the transition from childhood to adulthood doesn’t happen until the day they graduate high school. Yup! They are 18 years old and an honest to goodness adult! Whatever path a teen sets for their life, going onto college, heading out into the workforce, entering the military or just hanging around the house doing nothing, the choice is theirs!

Speaking of choices, one of the BIGGEST choices a teen will make is whether or not to get behind the wheel of a vehicle and drive, especially after they have been drinking. And make no mistake it is a choice you make! In Arizona, as in most states, the level of blood alcohol that defines you as being drunk is 0.08%. Just because most states say that your blood alcohol level needs to be 0.08% or higher to be considered legally drunk, any percentage of alcohol in your bloodstream will alter your ability to drive safely.

In Arizona, the term “driving under the influence” (DUI) is used not DWI which means “driving while intoxicated”. Oh, and did you know you can be considered DUI from other things like the effects of prescription medication, illegal drugs, etc.? So, DUI doesn’t just mean you are under the influence of alcohol. Are you aware that Arizona also has a “not-a-drop” law that makes it illegal for motorists who are under the age of 21 years to drive with any detectable amount of alcohol in their system. This is commonly referred to as a “baby DUI.” According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control) in 2016, 2,433 teens in the United States ages 16–19 were killed and 292,742 were treated in emergency departments for injuries suffered in motor vehicle crashes. That means that six teens ages 16–19 died every day due to motor vehicle

Many people mistakenly think that drunk driving only applies to them only if they are the driver of a vehicle who is under the influence of alcohol or some sort of drug. No, it doesn’t!

You may be completely sober, driving down the road minding your own business and be involved in a crash with another vehicle that is driven by a drunk driver!

So, what can you, as a teen do to make smart choices regarding drunk driving? Here are a few tips: • Choose to never drink and drive.

• Refuse to ride in a car with a teen driver who has been drinking.

• Follow “rules of the road” in your parent-teen driving agreement.

• ALWAYS wear a seat belt on every trip, no matter how short a trip is.

• Obey speed limits.

• Never use a cell phone or text while driving.

What can parents do to help their teen make smart, educated choices? Here are a few great tips for you: • Understand that most teens who drink do so to get drunk.

• Recognize the dangers of teen drinking and driving and that teen drivers are at much greater risk of crashing after drinking alcohol than adult drivers.

Ray High School seniors rewarded for hard work

This year’s graduating seniors were rewarded for all their hard work with thousands of dollars in scholarships and awards during Ray High School’s 2019 Scholarship Awards Ceremony.

Amee Kenyon received the University of Arizona Wildcat Excellence Award ($5,000 a year for four years); Ruth Reed Cowden Scholarship ($250); NAU Lumberjack Scholarship ($10,650 for four years); Asarco Scholarship ($1,250); and the Kearny Cares Foundation Scholarship ($1,250).

Tara Lorona received the Gateway Community College Athletic Scholarship which includes full tuition, fees and books for two years. She signed a letter of intent to play softball for the college earlier this year. She also received the NAU Lumberjack Scholarship ($10,650 for four years); Asarco Employee Funded Scholarship ($2,000); Carmen Bustamante Memorial Scholarship ($250); Chastain Educational Scholarship ($700); Copper Area Health Volunteers Scholarship ($1,000); Junior Chamber of Commerce Scholarship ($400); SaddleBrooke Community Outreach Scholarship ($1,500 for two years); Art Padilla Memorial Scholarship ($500); and the Native Air Scholarship ($1,000).

Copper Corridor high schools will celebrate commencement this week.

San Manuel High School will host the 64th annual commencement on Thursday, May 23, on Littau Field. The Valedictory address will be delivered by Darien Apuron. Taya Dockum will deliver the Salutatory address.

The San Manuel High School class of 2019 has 51 members.

Hayden High School Commencement will be held Friday, May 24, at Lalo Serrano Memorial Field in Winkelman. The Valedictorians are Angelita Casillas, Robert Casillas and Kayla Islava and the Salutatorian is Ariana Allen. The four will speak during the ceremony.

The Hayden High School Class of 2019 has 15 members.

Ray High School’s Commencement will also be held Friday, May 24, at the Ray School District Auditorium.

Commencement speakers include: Valedictorians Amee Kenyon, Tara Lorona, Jaden Pace and Hailey Rutter and Salutatorian Stone Patterson.

The Ray High School Class of 2019 has 33 members.

Superior High School commencement is set for Friday, May 24, on Memorial Field. The Valedictory address will be delivered by AugustineLou Hing. Marissa Estatico will deliver the Salutatory address.

The Superior High School Class of 2019 has 33 members.

All four ceremonies will begin at 7 p.m.

ADL recognizes Hayden High School as ‘No Place for Hate’ ADL Arizona has designated 31 Arizona schools as No Place For Hate® (NPFH). Among them is Hayden High School (HHS) which is being recognized for creating a safe learning environment, bringing awareness to the issues of bullying and bias, promoting diversity, unity, and respect among students. No Place For Hate® is an ADL initiative offering students, teachers, administrators and family members the opportunity to work together to enhance a

culture of respect in the school community. The program encourages schools to complete various campus activities and projects to promote unity and reduce bullying, namecalling and other expressions of bias.

Carlos Galindo-Elvira, an HHS 1985 graduate and ADL Arizona Regional Director, commented, “I am beaming with pride that Hayden High School joins 30 Arizona schools committed to campuses free of bias,

bullying and bigotry.” Adding, “The work by Hayden High School demonstrates the leadership and direction of students working toward inclusivity and respect for all students.” Hayden High School’s banner was presented to the HHS No Place for Hate Committee at a student assembly on May 15, 2019. 2019 Scholarship Banquet held Tuesday, May 14.

Following a welcome address by the HaydenWinkelman Unified School District Superintendent Jeff Gregorich, the scholarship presentation began.

Gila County Sheriff Deputy Gilbert Olivares presented the Gila County Law Related Education Scholarship to Angelita Casillas; the Gila County School Resource Officer Scholarship to Robert Casillas; the Gila County Posse Search and Rescue Scholarship to Robert Manriquez; and the Ron Nelvin Memorial Scholarship to Kayla Islava. Each scholarship was $500.

Rosemary Garner presented the Aaron David Lagunas Scholarships to Robert Casillas and Angelita Casillas.

Each scholarship was $250.

Maryann Velasco presented the Adriana “Adri” Cruz Scholarship to Robert Manriquez and Angelita Casillas.

The increasing success of the teams in and around the Copper Corrido area has resulted in more recognition for local players.

The Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) released postseasons honors, naming All-Conference and AllRegion teams in each of the six divisions.

A Town of Kearny Memorial Day Hometown Fun event will be held Monday, May 27, from 1 p.m. - 5 p.m., kicking off their 2019 pool season with free swimming. During the day there will be free drawings ever hour for a set of two tickets to the the July 16, 7 p.m. game between AZ Diamondbacks vs Rockies. The schedule for the season is Monday - Saturday, 1 p.m - 5 p.m. Public Swim, and 5 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. Lap Swim. On Wednesday and Friday, 7 p.m. - 9 p.m., Public Swim.

The Ray Bearcats Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) may be dissolved provided prior notice is given to the PTO membership, a vote taken at the next regular PTO meeting, and the request is approved by a majority vote of those present. Upon successful vote of dissolution of the PTO, the remaining funds shall be first used to pay any outstanding debt and then either; a vote shall be taken by the PTO membership to spend the remaining funds on an item that benefit the students; or the remaining funds be held in escrow by the Principal for use by a future school PTO. If a PTO is not formed within 24 months, the funds shall revert to the school and be used toward the benefit of the students under the discretion of the Principal (s). ARTICLE 11 Prohibited Activities No part of the net earnings of the corporation shall inure to the benefit of, or be distributable to its members, trustees, officers, or other private persons, except that the corporation shall be authorized and empowered to pay reasonable compensation for services rendered and to make payments and distributions in furtherance of the purposes set forth in Article 11. No substantial part of the activities of the corporation shall be the carrying on of propaganda, or otherwise attempting to influence legislation, and the corporation shall not participate in, or intervene in (including the publishing or distribution of statements) any political campaign on behalf of or in opposition to any candidate for public office. Youth honored at annual Elks banquet

Kearny Elks Lodge #2478 honored Copper Basin area young people at its annual Youth Banquet last week.

Each academic year the Lodge sponsors a variety of contests and programs involving students from both the Ray and HaydenWinkelman School Districts.

Students receiving recognition included: Americanism Essay Contest – Brooklyn Lechuga, Nicholette Lagunas, Vincent O’Brien and AnnMarie Canisales.

Drug Awareness Contest – Jillian Figueroa, Kyleigh Adkins, Jenna McDaniel and Brycen Ornelas.

Soccer Shoot – Corinne Figueroa and David Figueroa (U-8), Jillian Figueroa (U10), and Alidia Guzman (U-12).

Hoop Shoot – Savannah Magallanez and Ryan Garner (8-9), Ariana Arbizo and Tyler Garner (10-11) and Felicity Boltarez and Ysidro Medina (12-13).
