VFW looking for a few good persons for a Memorial Day cemetery spruce-up

Superior - VFW #3584 has invited all those looking to honor fallen military veterans to their Memorial Day Cemetery Cleanup. The plan is to start at 7 a.m., and end at 11 a.m. with a free luncheon to follow, for all volunteers and any veterans who wish to attend. Quartermaster Mike Montiel, speaking for VFW #3584, stated: “We have a number of veterans interred at the Superior Cemetery who no longer have living families to care for the gravesites, or whose families moved when the mine closed in 1982, and many of their gravesites have fallen into disrepair. We, at VFW #3584, find this to be unacceptable and are going to invest our time and efforts to remedy this problem by picking up our tools, gloves, hats, and sunscreen, and marching down to the cemetery to honor every man and woman buried there by cleaning every gravesite we can and placing an American on each grave in honor of Memorial Day.” He continued, “Any assistance goes a long

way on a project like this, so any help would be sincerely appreciated.” A flag-raising ceremony will be held before work begins. A cool down area will be provided with water, shade, and chairs for rest breaks. If you are unable to attend, but, still want to do your part in helping out the VFW, donations can be dropped off at VFW #3584, 405 W Main St (Across from Porter’s Cafe). For more information, visit the VFW #3584 on Facebook at http://bit.ly/2qQheTy or call the Quartermaster Mike Montiel at 480-2723786. The VFW is also currently seeking Gold Star Families family members of service men and women whom passed away during their time in uniform. They could be from any era or conflict and any branch of service. Quartermaster Montiel stated, “We want to honor those brave men and women with special acknowledgement for their sacrifice, as well as, that of their families. They can contact me directly at the number provided.

It’s time to clean the Fairview Cemetery, Superior’s VFW says. Volunteers are needed. Mike Montiel | Submitted

Memorial Day Tribute: Lest We Forget By John Hernandez Copper Area News During war times, small town America has always answered the call to duty. Many of their young men have been killed in action. One of the most extraordinary sacrifices by a small town in America happened during World War II. In the farming town of Bedford, Virginia, population 3,000, 38 young men had joined Company A in the National Guard. Most had joined during and in the years following the Depression for the $1 a day pay, not anticipating that they would go to war. At the outbreak of the war, they were called to active duty. On D-Day June 6, 1944, 28 of the 38 sons of Bedford participated in the mass invasion of Normandy, France which would mark the beginning of the end of the war in Europe. On that day 22 of those men would die on Omaha Beach. Most of them were killed in the first minutes of the landing. It was the highest per capita D-Day loss in the nation suffered by one community. The survivors and the 10 men who joined the fighting a few days later would continue fighting until the war’s end. They returned home, some of them physically wounded and most of them scarred emotionally and mentally by their war experiences. Their stories and the stories of their mothers, fathers, wives, friends, family, small town life and sacrifice are told in the book The Bedford Boys: One American Town’s Ultimate D-Day Sacrifice by Alex Kershaw. Two sets of brothers, Bedford and Raymond Hoback and Earl and Joseph Parker were among those killed that bloody morning. Their story along with D-Day, the Omaha Beach landing and the Bedford boys is the history that the acclaimed movie Saving Private Ryan is based. Director of the movie Steven Spielberg would donate a large sum to the construction of a National D-Day Memorial located in Bedford, Virginia which opened in 2001. The National D-Day Memorial honors those brave men who participated in the invasion and the 4,413 Allied soldiers who died that day in the vicious fighting to secure the beachhead. On this Memorial Day, we honor those men who once lived in the small mining and ranching communities along the Copper Corridor and made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. May we never forget. The names were gathered from the internet and community memorials. Where more information was available, it was listed. World War II Army dead were the hardest to find. We apologize if we have left anyone out. We would like to learn their names from family, veteran organizations or friends, so they can be honored. If you have names for us to add to these, please email them to editor@minersunbasin.com or johnh@ minersunbasin.com. GLOBE WORLD WAR I Henry H. Berry, Louis S. Boyer, Charles C. Top students talk about life in and beyond high school By Cat Brown Superior Sun Superior High School’s 2017 Valedictorian Allison Martinez and Salutatorian Dominic Perea are two students who have big plans for their future. Allison Martinez, this year’s Superior High School Valedictorian, is an articulate and very bright 18-year-old who is excited about graduating and taking the next steps towards her dreams of one day becoming a Doctor. The daughter of Alfredo and Lorena Martinez, Allison was born and raised in Superior. She has two siblings, an older brother who teaches pilots for a living, and a younger brother, who will be a Junior next year. When asked what she enjoyed most about high school Allison says, “Participating in DECA because we get to travel around the US.” Allison was the President of DECA this year, and during her time in DECA, she traveled with the group to Seattle, California, and Nashville. But it’s not just the traveling she is going to miss. Allison goes on to say, “I’m going to miss being able to compete and being able to meet other people and network and going to workshops.” The Graduation Ceremony is right around the corner and when talk turned to cap and gowns Allison mentioned that many Superior students decorate their caps with words or even bedazzle them. Allison was not sure if she was going to decorate her own cap, but if she did the word Belle would be on it. Belle is the Disney character in Beauty and the Beast. When asked why Belle, Allison explained, “I like Belle because she is not afraid to be herself, she likes to stand out, she likes to read, and she doesn’t want to fit in with the norm that anyone has, and she doesn’t care what people say about her.” It’s obvious that Allison has many of these traits herself, a young woman who is not afraid to speak her mind and has clear goals for her future. When Allison was younger she wanted to be a Veterinarian, but as she grew up she realized she wanted to help people and her dreams turned to medical school. After graduation Allison is heading off to Grand Canyon University for the Fall of 2017 enrollment. She is entering college as a premed student with hopes of one day graduating with a degree in Science and Biology. And after college, her education will not stop as she plans to take the MCATs and continue onto medical school. But the college route is not going to be an easy one for Allison since now a day’s full ride scholarships are hard to come by. Allison has been given the Chancellor Scholarship from

To pay for the rest of her schooling, Allison is currently applying for more scholarships, and she plans to work. This summer you will find her working as a lifeguard at the local Pool. Allison says the advice she wished she had gotten while still in high school, “I wish someone had told me to start applying for scholarships freshman year.” When Allison comes back to Superior after graduating medical school, she hopes to see that the high school has, “A lot more programs and a lot more classes for kids to expand their knowledge, so that way when they go to college or university, they’ll know what they are dealing with, and they won’t struggle. They will be prepared to go to college, and they will have more opportunities.” This year’s Salutatorian, Dominic Perea is

Top student-athlete awards announced at Sports Banquet By Andrew Luberda Superior Sun Superior High School Principal and Athletic Director William Duarte emceed the school’s annual Sports Awards Banquet, which took place on May 10. Duarte, along with Superior’s coaches and teachers, has helped facilitate success in the classroom and on the field for the Panthers’ student-athletes. “It’s a dream I’ve been having for a long time,” Duarte said at last year’s banquet about the dual success of the school’s student-athletes. “It starts at the junior high and we want to build successful programs.” Several of the Panthers’ athletic programs have achieved highest level of success, especially in recent years thanks, in part, to talented classes that have gone through the school. This year no exception. Seniors Joseph Diaz-Gonzalez, Maribel Castro and Austin Navarrette took home the top awards at the event. All three are multi-sport student-athletes. Diaz-Gonzalez, who played football, basketball and baseball, was the winner of the Manny Ruiz Award, which is given each year to the student-athlete who displays good citizenship, excels academically, and performs well on the court or on the field. “It means a lot to me because if you look at the teams I’ve been with, there are lot of players that could’ve won this award as well,” Diaz-Gonzalez said. “I’m very thankful and grateful to be chosen.”

He plans to study at Central Arizona College but is undecided on which area. He’s narrowed it to either Sports Physician or Engineering Robotics. Maribel Castro, a three-sport athlete, was named the Female Athlete of the Year in addition to earning several other honors at the banquet, including MVP of the girls’ tennis team. “I’ve worked really hard in varsity sports and in school,” Castro told the Superior Sun. “I’m very blessed and grateful to win this award.” The owner of a 3.8 GPA, Castro plans to attend Central Arizona College before transferring to the University of

Arizona. She wants to pursue a career as a trauma nurse. Castro believes competing in sports has helped prepare for life after graduation. “Any sport teaches teamwork, strength and communication,” she said. “You have to be able to communicate and understand others to be successful.” Austin Navarrette, a member of the Panthers’ state champion baseball team, was named the Male Athlete of the Year after a four-year, three-sport career at Superior, where he earned a 3.3 GPA. “It feels good to make my family proud,” Navarrette said

Smiling Dog Landscapes

S

miling Dog Landscapes is a full service landscaping and yard maintenance company. The company is owned by Tom McDonald and he operates the business out of Gold Canyon. He has been in business since 2000. Tom received his degree in Biology and Botany and played a key role in the development of the Gold Canyon Golf Resort before he opened Smiling Dog Landscapes. Smiling Dog Landscaping has 16 employees and they offer a variety of services from landscaping design and installation, irrigation system repair, upgrades and installation, low voltage landscaping lighting and general landscape upkeep. For customers in Superior, his focus has been on landscape design and installation as well as irrigation services. They can serve both residential and commercial clients. He has not expanded his routine yard maintenance services into the Superior and Globe/Miami area due to the travel costs. Smiling Dog Landscapes also offers educational services from their offices including classes on irrigation and water systems, healing plants of the desert and they also have a garden walk class. These classes are all held at their Gold Canyon office. Smiling Dog Landscapes joined the Superior Chamber and is involved in many other community projects in the Gold Canyon and Apache Junction areas including the Peralta School Garden and the Silly Mountain Trails restoration project. Tom’s best business advice: “Utilize the services of the Small Business Development Center. They can help you every step of the way.”
