OBITUARIES Joyce Hughey Joyce Hughey, 90, passed away April 9, 2018, at Northwest Medical Center in Tucson due to complications from pulmonary fibrosis.

She was born in Breckenridge, Texas on Nov. 9, 1927 to J.C. and Mary Lou Sims. During her life, she lived in Texas, Nebraska, New Mexico and Arizona.

She married Jimmie Bowra and they had one son, Tommy Burr Bowra. She and Tommy moved to San Manuel after Joyce and Jimmie divorced in 1954. Joyce married Sammie McCabe, the butcher in Creed’s Market, in 1958. They were married until his death in 1974. Later

she married George Hughey and they were married until his death in 1987.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husbands and son, Tommy Bowra.

She is survived by a sister, Mary Jay Humphreys (Bob); daughter-in-law, Patty Bowra; brother-in-law and sisterin-law, Jimmy and Lynda Hughey; and stepdaughter, Charlyn Bantlin and husband Frank; grandchildren, Brian Bowra and Mychel Westra (Jeff). Joyce had four generations surviving her: many grandchildren, greatgrandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind many friends and loved ones.

Joyce attended many different grade schools and then,

in 1948, graduated from high school in Sundown, Texas.

She worked in the offices of Magma Copper Company for 32 years until her retirement on Dec. 31, 1987.

Joyce was a great cook and artist. She crocheted many beautiful items and was an excellent photographer. She was active in Beta Sigma Phi for more than 60 years.

Services were held April 20, 2018, at East Lawn Palms in Tucson and she was inurned at East Lawn Palms Mausoleum of Peace.

Francisco ‘Frank’ R. Esquivel Francisco “Frank” R. Esquivel, 59, was called into eternal rest at his home in Mammoth, Arizona on Tuesday, April 10, 2018.

He was born in San Manuel, Arizona on Feb. 19, 1959 and grew up in Mammoth. He went to school and worked in the area most of his life. Frank was a loving father, tata, son, brother, uncle and friend. He was very friendly and easy going so he had many friends. He especially loved music and enjoyed watching his favorite artists live. He loved to hang out and spend time with friends and family.

Frank will be forever remembered by his daughter, Alicia and son in law Gelacio Zazueta; sons, Francisco Esquivel Jr. and Fabiyan Esquivel; his parents, Francisco M. and Velia Esquivel; brothers, William Esquivel and Angel (Betty) Esquivel; sister, Delores Esquivel;

Services were held Saturday, April 14, 2018, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Mammoth. He was interred at Valley View Cemetery in Mammoth.

Joe Pierson Joe Pierson, 84, passed away at Oro Valley Hospital on April 19, 2018, due to health related complications. He will be missed so much.

Joe is survived by his wife of 40 years, Lee Pierson; three sons, Joey, Michael and Jamie Pierson; daughter, Paula Pierson; three brothers, Frank (Dora) Pierson, Tommie (Sally) Pierson, and Peter (Rhonda) Pierson; and two sisters: Maggie (Carl) Riggs and Annie (Terry) Counts.

State Lands in Southern Arizona, including Pinal, go into Stage II Fire Restrictions On Tuesday, May 1, the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management implemented Stage II Fire Restrictions across all Southern Arizona state-owned and managed lands.

Restrictions will impact Cochise, Greenlee, Graham, Pima, Pinal, and Santa Cruz counties.

On Friday, May 4, DFFM will place Coconino County, south of the Grand Canyon, in Stage II Fire Restrictions also.

Under Stage II restrictions, no campfires will be allowed at all. Fireworks and target shooting are never allowed on Arizona state lands.

“The Department of Forestry and Fire Management has been prepositioning crews across the state, so we have the ability to provide initial attack faster. With that, we must impose stronger fire restrictions as fire activity gains momentum across Arizona,” said State Forester Jeff Whitney.

The Coronado National Forest, Bureau of Land Management, Saguaro National Park, among many other agencies, will also be going into Stage II Fire Restrictions on Tuesday.

The Coconino National Forest will also be implementing Stage II restrictions on Friday as well.

Restrictions apply to the following state-owned and state-managed lands within the above-mentioned counties including: • All State Trust lands outside incorporated municipalities.

• All Game and Fish Commission Wildlife areas and department properties outside incorporated municipalities.

• All State Parks outside incorporated municipalities – State Parks will remain open with campfires allowed in

OBITUARY Janice Fletcher Janice Fletcher, 79, long time resident of San Manuel passed away April 29, 2018.

She was born in Jerome where she grew up and attended school then finished her high school education by graduating from San Manuel High School with the Class of 1957.

She was employed for many years as lab technician by Magna Copper and later their successors.

Janice leaves her husband of over 25 years, Paul C. Fletcher; daughters, Sherri Pearson and her husband R. Z., Christine Dunlap and Mary Fletcher; sons, Kenneth Burk, Jeffery Fletcher and Matthew Fletcher. She was the doting grandmother of two granddaughters. She leaves sisters, Isabel Mathieson and Rosalie Cummins and brother, Frank Gallego.

Local men work with Arizona

pretend they are packrats by building, collecting and climbing in a simulated packrat habitat where they can slide down cholla skeleton ribs and climb through prickly pear pads while playing in a safe indoor environment. Sonoran Desert Museum to create the new ‘Packrat Playhouse’ bigger older kids.

A couple of local men played important parts in the development and building of the Packrat Playhouse. Michael Reddish, owner of Adventure Gear in Oracle and Oracle resident Troy Letwak helped immensely with the project. Michael Reddish handled the contract through his company, Adventure Gear, LLC. He designed the project along with the Desert Museum.

“This type of project had never been done before,” Mike said.

He had to make sure it not only was a true simulation of a packrat nest and environment but had to have the project done within a specific time frame and within budget. The project was financed by a couple of grants. The design and project has been nominated for a couple of awards.

Michael did the netting and rope installation for the project. He was assisted by Sisco Barragan of San Manuel. It took four months of work.

“Troy Letwak did the steel work and did

a great job,” Michael said. The playhouse not only teaches the kids about packrats, but “it gives the kids an internal joy and experience that develops self confidence and self esteem and creates a relationship with the museum. It is not just a playland but a place to grow,” he explained.

Troy Letwak owns the Ore House Hill Top Tavern in Oracle. He was responsible for completing the steel frame work for the Arizona-Sonoran Desert Museum Packrat Playhouse. Troy,

along with Bill Brooks of Tucson, did all the metal fabrication for the frame and structure for the project. Some of the work included a 19 1/2 foot by 16 feet wide cactus and 350 pieces of 20 feet long tubing. Troy also designed and built a 3’ by 5’ model of the project. All the fabrication was done in Oracle and was then delivered and installed at the Desert Museum. The entire metal project took 10 months.

Congratulations on a job well done. The Pack Rat Playhouse is awesome!

Teens Sew Cool awards sewing machine to Cano

There were lots of smiles on this special day, but none happier than that of Joana Cano, a Mountain Vista School student with the Teens Sew Cool after-school sewing program for teen and preteen students.

Joana may have been a little suspicious when her mother and school principal, Ms. Crystle Gallegos, just happened to show up for class, but there was no disguising her excitement when she was awarded with a brand-new Brother Simplicity SB700T sewing machine.

Joana was selected by the Teens Sew Cool Mentors/ Teachers due to her outstanding achievements in the TSC program.

She started in September 2016 with no previous sewing experience. But with hard work and persistence, she has become skilled, independent, and creative in her sewing, finishing many projects each semester. Family members report that Joana is always smiling when she comes home from a TSC session; she loves showing off her newest creation. Joana says that she will start out making decorative pillow cases and “snap” bags this summer on her new machine, but someday, she would love to make her own Quinceanera dress.

She is off to a great start with Jeanne Soling and other TSC mentors providing special instruction on the new machine, which is more sophisticated than the classroom machines and should keep Joana sewing for years to come.

Teens Sew Cool would like to thank the SaddleBrooke Rotary and the SaddleBrooke Community Outreach for their generous grants this year that allowed Teens Sew Cool to purchase the sewing machines for Joana and other students earlier in the school year. Teens Sew Cool would also like to thank Cathey’s Sewing and Vacuum for their continued support of our organization. Cathey’s will be providing Joana with a series of lessons for learning more about how to use the features of her new machine.

Teens Sew Cool is a non-profit organization which provides sewing instruction for teens and preteens with the goal of giving them skills for future use with the family, or even for income production. TSC Mentors often provide one-on-one assistance as students, both boys and girls, gain skills and have fun learning to sew. TSC sessions are offered during the fall and spring at Oracle Mountain Vista and San Manuel Jr/ Sr High schools, at no cost to students. Each session, students complete a variety of projects and participate in a community project, such as making stuffed animals for needy children. Classes usually fill early and many students continue with the program for several years as they develop advanced skills. The TSC mentors are from SaddleBrooke, SaddleBrooke Ranch, Oro Valley, and Oracle.

San Manuel Library celebrates Earth Day

Children and their families learned how to nourish mother earth through conservation during Earth Day celebrations at the San Manuel Public Library. Participants designed ceramic pots by creating their own unique miniature flower pot by painting vibrant colors of the rainbow. They also worked with potting soil and transplanted annuals: golden, copper, and brass marigolds into their new one-of-a-kind flower pot. The children were taught how to care for their flower with the importance of providing the right amount of sunlight, water, deadheading, and transplanting when space becomes too crowded.

Run for the Fallen honors the Heroes of the War on Terror

By Jennifer R. Carnes Copper Area News In 2004, a young soldier from Eastern Pinal County lost his life in Iraq. This was the first casualty of the Iraqi War for the small communities of Winkelman, Dudleyville and Mammoth. His family and the community mourned his loss.

Throughout the month of April that young soldier and other killed in the war against terror will be honored as part of America’s Run for the Fallen, a 6,000 mile trek from Ft. Irwin, CA to Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, DC. The route through Arizona, which started late last month in Parker, took a turn through the Copper Corridor last week.

At each mile of the route, the run team will stop and honor one of the men and women who died in military service to America and the War on Terror.

Carson Ramsay was 22 when a car bomb was detonated outside a market in Baghdad on Oct. 10, 2004. Carson was a gunner and was riding on top of a Humvee in a convoy that was passing the marketplace.

He was the only American casualty, but 10 others, all Iraqi nationals, were also killed.

Carson was born Jan. 4, 1982 and was raised just three miles north of Mammoth. He attended school in Kearny and was a member of the Ray High School MCJROTC. He enlisted in the Army in May 2001 before he graduated. He was a member of the 1st Cavalry Division stationed at Ft. Hood, Texas.

He was a decorated soldier, having been awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart (3rd Award), Army Good Conduct Medal, Army Service Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism

Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and Weapons Qualification Badge M4 (Expert).

He was an avid outdoorsman. He hunted and fished and was planning on purchasing a Harley-Davidson motorcycle when his tour of duty ended in March 2005. In an interview with Copper Area News in 2004, his parents said that Carson’s last message, left on their answering machine the Friday before he was killed, reminded his father, Cecil, to check on the motorcycle a man in Kearny was holding for him in Kearny.

“He had said, ‘Hi, I’m fine. Tell dad to check on the Harley again for me,’” his mother Elaine said.

“I still hadn’t done it on Sunday,” Cecil said.

Carson was injured earlier the same year in another IED bombing and had shrapnel embedded in his cheek. He was only out of the action for three days before he was back on the front lines.

Carson visited his family in June 2004 after his grandmother passed away.

“He was very upbeat,” Cecil told Copper Area News.

“One thing I’ve told everybody, when he got ready to go back I asked him, are you scared?”

Carson told his dad, “It’s my job. I’ve got to go back.”

“Whether he was real patriotic, he never told me,” Cecil said. “He just told me, ‘That’s my job; I’ve got to go back and do it.’ That impressed me.”

“He’s a hero to me,” Cecil added.

Carson’s a hero to all of us.

Runners will reach Carson’s Hero Marker at mile 31 on Day 28, overall mile 1313 in Utah/Colorado.

Math Boot Camp

Central Arizona College will hold a free Summer Math Boot Camp at the Aravaipa Campus May 21-24. By participating in a math camp, students will be better prepared to take the ACCUPLACER Math Placement Test.

The ACCUPLACER Math Boot Camp is a 20-hour class conducted in a lecture and lab format. Students will take an initial test to determine their strengths and areas where additional work may be needed. By mastering topics that were previously confusing, students will boost their ACCUPLACER Math score.

Updated data shows teacher pay increase; moves Arizona up only slightly in national rankings PHOENIX (April 5, 2018) – Median elementary teacher pay in Arizona rose nearly 5 percent from 2016 to 2017, but the increase bumps the state just one position in the national rankings – from 50th to 49th. Arizona moved ahead of Oklahoma, for now, but remains well behind its neighboring states.

The data was analyzed and adjusted for cost of living by researchers at Arizona State University’s Morrison Institute for Public Policy to inform the Arizona Education Progress Meter, which provides a vision for what the community wants education in our state to look like, including teacher pay that is on par with the national median.
